Specific Printing with Network Logins

I want to be able to have select eMacs running 10.3.9 to be able to only print to a specific printer. I want to have this printer to be hidden/unseen from all other computers on the network.
There are network logins, so randoms users will be on these computers. I am running server 10.3.9, manage with workgroup manager.
I dont care if these select eMacs can print/see other printers I just want theses eMacs in a Lab to be the only computers to print to a HP Color Laser Jet 3500.
I was told this can be done, but am unsure how. I am fairly new to this, so any help or advise would be awesome.
Thanks,
Jeff
  Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Server 10.3.9

We're running 10.4 but I think this can still work in 10.3.9.
In Workgroup Manager create a group of computers for the eMacs you want to have access to the printer. Add the computers to the group. Select the group and edit the preferences>printing. Select the printers you want the managed group to see. Reboot the clients. You should have the printer you desire. You may want to select in the same window that users are not permitted to edit the printer list so that the users cannot add printers.
As far as other machines not being able to print to that printer. Select all other machines or groups of machines and simply make sure that the printer is not part of their managed printers list.
As it is a newer printer you may need to shut off the bonjour broadcasting of the printer as each local subnet mac will be able to see it regardless of printers selected above.
This way of handling the problem requires total commitment to managing all clients printers (if you require only your eMac group to have access).
Others may have better ideas, but this should work.

  • Sudden problems with network logins

    Hello,
I've suddenly started experiencing an issue preventing normal network logins. Logging in on client machines gives "The home folder for user "xxxxxx" is not located in the usual place or cannot be accessed" This occurs on every client machine - all are running Tiger. The server is running Leopard. This occurs with user home accounts located on the OD master, as well as the OD replica. The automount record appears to be correct, "sudo sharing -l" reports correct information, AFP logs show normal logins, as does all open directory logs. I can mount home folders manually (apple + K method), and permissions appear to be correct on home folders.
I've discovered that attempting to change directories to /Network/Servers gives an authentication failure, and, for extra fun, I opened a terminal window on the ODM, su'd to an open directory user (who had a home directory on the ODR)and poked around a bit only to discover that ls -l showed this user as owning everything, and everything had no permissions whatsoever.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you!
    Colin

    Hello,
I just upgraded a complete company from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6, about 25 machines and exactly 2 of them show that behaviour. The network accoutns are all ok, you con use them on other machines. I can confirm that /Network/Servers is not a correct path on both of the bad machines.
Ther is NO issue with time synchronization, access rights or whatever.
Funny, the REAL interesting questions seem to go unanswered all the time...
Can anybody give me a hint (other than "archive and install")?

  • Troubles printing with networked printers

I have a printer connected to a Mac Mini (with Leopard installed) and am trying to send something to print from my G5. The computer sees the printer but it always comes back saying "com.apple.print.recoverable-warning". Apparently it is having trouble communicating with the printer. The computers are connected through a wireless connection using a airport extreme base station. The printer is physically connected to the Mini since the usb has a external drive connected to it. There are no problems printing from the Mini but only when trying to do it from another computer on the network.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    D.J.

I get the same message (com.apple.print.recoverable-warning), but my printer is on, plugged in to a USB hub which is plugged into the TC. I've re-started the printer, plugged it directly into the TC USB port, added it as a new TC printer to my printer list and selected it, but no change. I'm about to give up on shared printing with the TC and just plug the printer back into one of my Macs.
Anyone have any other ideas? (Despite high hopes, the new Airport Utility update did nothing for me.)

  • Problem printing with network accounts in Rosetta apps

This is a weird one that I've been trying to fix for weeks with no luck. Any thoughts would be helpful before I dump the AD Plugin and switch to ADmitMac...
    Setup:
We have some (about 50) student iMacs, bound to our Active Directory domain.
On logging in, students are authenticated via an Active Directory server.
The students have Home Folders on another Windows 2003 server.
Force Local Home is off in the AD plugin, so when a student logs in, they get an ordinary account (non-admin) and see the Desktop, etc. that is held on the server, so if they log into any iMac they get the same Home Folder.
    Problem:
The odd problem has just occurred with 4 new iMacs. These are the first Intel Macs on the network using AD logins and network Home Folders. Old PowerPC iMacs work just fine. However, the Intels exhibit this strange behaviour:
If a student prints from any Rosetta application (e.g. Word or Photoshop) the print goes ahead and prints, but the application immediately crashes (quits unexpectedly). Intel Apps (e.g. Preview) however, print fine.
I've just done a print from Word with one of my students' accounts (username bbjarhsy, Home Folder on a server called d4, as you'll see at the end). The crash log for Word tells me:

This seems to indicate some sort of problem with addressing Virtual Memory after/during sending the print job. (??)
I should mention that the prints are going to a (Windows) print server which does its stuff properly - queues and prints the job and deducts pages properly from the quotas set up.
I've tried making a test account an Admin account but these crash too, so it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the local permissions.
Any idea where I can go with this? Anyone doing the same thing with no problem? It definitely seems to be a bug with the Intel version of Tiger as the G5s have exactly the same set up with no such problems.
Thanks for anything anyone can offer!!

  • Photoshop issue with network login

All my editors are having issues with photoshop and creating a new document. The program launches fine, but when they go to create a new document, they get the RWOD and it locks up and needs to be force quit.
If I login to the local account I can launch photoshop and create a new document without any issues. I have checked the system log in Console, but it does not show me anything that would appear to cause issues. I ssh to that machine and watched system log while they attempted to create a new document and nothing showed up at all.
Anybody have any ideas on what would be causing this? I have tried trashing the prefs as well with no luck. Thanks

  • Can not print with networked brother printer on my iMac

I am not sure why but both of my printers on my wired network computers can not communicate with me any longer.
    Any suggestions?

I have a very similar situation. Only the hardware changes.
•Brother fax2820 attachced to the iMacG4 via USB which it wired to Linksys wireless router.
•MacBook built-in airport connected to LAN via Linksys wireless router.
Same symptoms - I can find and install the shared usb printer but it won't print.
Can't, of course, use your solution - Linksys router doesn't have a usb port.
    So, what next?

  • Printing dashboard with network printer

Is there any way to send/print the dashboard page to physical network printer? i am having links to HTML print and PDF print. But i want to print with network printer. please give some suggetion.
    thanks

Currently there is no out of the box solution. But with some amount of work you can make it very robust by using ibots and BI Publisher Java APIs. You need to basically call the delivery manager API from the ibot. You can pass the output of a dashboard to the API which can print to a local printer. I have an example in my blog entry here http://oraclebizint.wordpress.com/2008/02/01/oracle-bi-ee-101332-calling-bi-publisher-java-apis-from-ibots-storing-reports-in-file-system-using-delivers-and-bi-publisher-scheduler/. Though this talks about storing the reports in a file system, the idea is the same. Instead of a file-system destination use printer as the destination.

  • I can't print to a kyocera c3232E with network accounting

I'm working with a Krocera KM-C3232E printer with network accounting. I added the printer using it's IP addr. It indicated the correct driver name, a valid unit and IP. After continuing an problem is indicated and asks if I still want to create a que. I check OK and the printer is added. When the print dialgue box comes up there is no place to input an acct ID, in fact there are nearly no choices at all. The job goes to que but never connects to the printer. Help.

assuming all the connections are good (wires or wifi), make sure that you have updated the printer software to include the printer model
Then install, ensure that the printer is in the list of printers in System Preferences.
    Good luck!

  • Communication problem with network printer

I have a Lexmark X9350 all-in-one printer. It has a built in wireless card and I am trying to print to it from my Powerbook G4. I have an airport extreme network setup in my home, and my PC is able to access the printer just fine. When I installed the printer software on the mac, it recognized the printer on the network and worked at first, but then suddenly couldn't find the printer. When I uninstalled and reinstalled the software it was very strange because when I got to the point where it searches the network for a printer, sometimes the printer shows up, and then if I click to refresh the printer sometimes disappears. It is not an issue with being out of range, because the printer display tells me it has plenty of connection, and as I said the PC can print with no problems. It appears to be something specific with Tiger not being able to consistently detect the printer.

I would look at XP's port configuration for the printer and then try and use the same protocol on the Mac. If XP is showing it as RAW Port 9100, then that is shown as HP jet Direct - Socket on the Mac. The only issue then is whether the OS X driver is available in the Lexmark list. Sometimes the provided OS X driver is only for direct USB connections, so you have to look at using an alternate driver, such as those offered by Gutenprint.

  • How do I get connected to a server on my network via an IP address?  When I try to open in a URL and login as a registered user with proper login it errors out saying there was a problem with connecting to the server?

I am new to Mac...How do I get connected to a server on my network via a hyper link IP address path?  When I try to open in a URL and login as a registered user with proper login it errors out saying there was a problem with connecting to the server?

Some of the following is going to use some technical terms — this area is inherently somewhat technical.
If you don't understand some part of the following reply, please ask.
Is this your own OS X Server system on your own network, or is this some other server within some larger organization?
You're posting this in the OS X Server forum, which is a software package that allows OS X systems to provide web-based and many other services; to become servers.
If it's your OS X Server on your network, then the network and DNS configurations are suspect, or the server is somehow malfunctioning or misconfigured.   This is unfortunately fairly common, as some folks do try to avoid setting up DNS services.
If it's a larger organization and somebody else is managing the server and the network, then you'll probably need to contact the IT folks for assistance; to learn the network setup and DNS requirements, and if there's a problem with the server itself.
The basic web URL "hyper link IP address path" — without using DNS — usually looks something the following, where you'll need to replace 10.20.30.40 with the IP address of your server:
    http://10.20.30.40
UptimeJeff has posted a URL that specifies the AFP file system; an OS X file share.  That's used if you're connecting to an Apple storage service somewhere on your network.  You might alternatively need to specify smb://10.20.30.40 or such, if it's a Windows file server.  (There can be additional requirements for connecting to Windows Server systems, too.)
If there's local IT staff available here, please contact them for assistance.  If these are your own local systems and your own local OS X Server system, then some information on the server will be needed.  (If you're on a NAT'd network, you'll also need to get DNS services configured and working on your local OS X Server system and your network — you'll not be able to skip this step and reference ISP DNS servers here — or things can and usually will get weird.)

  • CUPS in the network - possible without specific printer drivers?

    Hello guys,
I am trying to build a small home server from a netbook.
One of things it should do is sharing a printer for Mac OS and Windows. The server has printer drivers and is able to print with CUPS and Foomatic drivers.
Is it possible to set up server in a way that clients would not need any printer specific drivers?
As I understand it should be possible to print there with PostScript which should be universal. Are there any limitations of this (like printing of images) or better solutions for that?
If the PostScript is the way to go, could you point me to article about setting CUPS for that?

Well, if you are using a router, then you should - for your safety - have it require a password. I would not run an open wifi network - anybody on the street and your neighbors could be using your network for free internet access.
I can only think of one possible way for this: have your turned on Printer Sharing in the Sharing Preference? But I believe you will still need a password. I'm not an expert on Sharing, so hopefully someone else will chime in. In the meantime, there is some information (scroll down for printer sharing):

  • Low printer with lomg processing times ; network issues

    Hello,
    We are running ECC6 on HP-UX 11.23/Oracle 10.2
We have configured all our printers ( more than 300) using the host spool access method L : Print Locally using LP/LPR.
Every day, we have the same printers with the sames "low printers" :
    sm21 syslog shows ;
Printer WRAL Temporarily Locked Due to Connection Problem
    Spool Process logs indicates ;
    Fri Feb 17 11:09:37 2012
Warning: lpq on printer WRAL took 16 seconds!
      RSPOSYSLOG:
SYSLOG written: CODE FBL, locat 28, param WRAL&16&
There are several notes that indicate how to deactivate the printer pooling, but still, the best thing to do is to pinpoint the
root cause of the issue, .....which we haven't
I checked the spool distribution times in transaction STAD, I have unusuallyhigh "processing times" values.
    But I can't underdstand it.
Is it a network processing time ?
Our network team tell us that there is nothing abnormal, but is there a way to check from SAP , any netwok issue with the printers ?
    Thanks
Edited by: Raoul Shiro on Feb 17, 2012 5:09 PM

    Hi,
For log "Printer WRAL Temporarily Locked Due to Connection Problem", it means
that for a period of xxx seconds (parameter rspo/lpq/temp_disable_time) no query or printing from sap for this printer are done anymore.
This has no influence on the printout from any other application. The only effect is that the printer is 'disabled' within sap.
The idea behind this concept is to prevent that a slow query can slow down the overall print performance of one server. During the query the spool wp cannot do anything else. In this time no printout to any printer from this server can be done.
It would seem that the problem is outside of the R/3 system and is at UNIX or printer level. Perhaps you had a temporary Network or printer problem. You can test by executing the lpstat query to this printer at OS level.
You can find out the exact lpstat query that your system uses, by looking at the system parameters 'rspo/host_spool/query'.
The parameter &P in the command will be substituted by the host device name.
If everything is correct in your unix spooler then it is very likely that the printer is not working correctly, so the unix spooler can't send print jobs to this printer, Therefore SAP blocks this printer for a certain time trying not to overload the unix spool queue.
You might want to temporarily turn off the query but if there is a problem with a specific printer or OS problem, this
will not be reported back to R/3.
    Some SAP notes:
385794 - Connection problems with network access methods
20924  - Parameter settings for remote printing

  • Problem with HP printer and Network

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and HP 8600 wireless printer.  I'm using an airport extreme base station.
I'm having trouble with network connectivity and wondered if the printer is the culprit--many times after printing, I lose my network connection completely.
I've tried updating base station software, computer software updates, re-booting the base station, etc., but nothing seems to permanently solve the problem.
    Would appreciate any insights.
    Thanks

Sounds like this could be an issue with the software. To start I want to be sure that we remove the software fully and correcty before we continue. Follow the instructions below and see what happens after.
First if you use a USB cord, make sure to remove it (this is important). Do not plug it back in until the software directs you to. Then go through the Devices and Printers, Programs and Features and Device Manager folders and insure that all copies, files, and programs related to the printer are removed. Then as directed, restart the computer.
In the START menu type "%temp%" and press ENTER. Here I want you to press Ctrl+A and hit DELETE. Some of the files will not allow you to delete them, skip those files and delete the majority that allows it.
find and install the FULL FEATURE SOFTWARE if it is available :
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3692888
Install that and let me know the result!

  • Unable to print with my Canon PIXMA IP 4700 and JetDirect network appliance

After many tries I decided to post my question.
I have a Canon PIXMA IP 4700 connected to the network with a Jetdirect 175X box. So I tried to add a new printer with a "HP Jetdirect Socket" port. I have previously installed the driver from the official website. The test page is staying on the spooler.
I also tried with LPD port (supported by the Jetdirect box) and IPP but nothing is working.
When the printer is directly connected with USB, it's working fine. Printing from my others Windows computers is working fine too since many months.
    Thank your for your help.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your problem is being caused by the Canon driver. It cannot be used when the printer is connected to the USB port of a 3rd party print server, or if shared by Windows.
The solution is to use a driver like Gutenprint or PrintFab. Gutenprint is preferred because it is free (it ships with OS X) however the iP4700 is not listed as a supported model. The iP4600 is listed so you could try selecting this model in the Print Using menu (shown as Canon PIXMA iP4600 - Gutenprint v5.2.3). If the iP4600 Gutenprint driver does not work that well then you could look at using [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net] which does support the iP4700. It costs €49 but there is a 30 day trial so at least you can try it before committing to buying.
Another option would be to use a Airport device, like the Express, instead of the Jetdirect print server. With the printer connected to its USB port you can then use the Canon iP4700 driver on the Mac.
