Specifying dot gain curves for custom CMYK profile

I am trying to create a custom CMYK profile that would mimic the FOGRA39 (coated) ICC profile but would provide more control.
When creating a custom ICC profile, I'm trying to specify the dot gain curves manually by entering the Tonal Value Increase data published by the International Color Consortium. But the last data point at far right (100 on the horizontal axis) always remains at 100% high instead of the appropriate 0%. In other words, the point at the top right corner should actually be at the bottom right corner. The point is uneditable, because it doesn't have a corresponding 100: entry field.
This is how the curve should actually look like:
I want to place the last point at the bottom right corner but I cannot figure out how to do that. I'm using Photoshop CC 2014 on Windows 8.1.
Do I misunderstand anything about the dot gain curves? Is this a bug? Does it actually affect the dot gain for dark shadows or is it merely a display problem?
I would appreciate any pointers to information about this problem.

Thank you. I have figured out by experimentation that you are right. I've fixed my dot gain curves to look like this:

  • Custom cmyk profile not in proof setup

Working with Blurb.com Printer Profile CMYK  named Blurb_IC_Profile.ICC
Opened profile  and saved in Rose/AppData/Local/Adobe/Profile
Cannot bring it up in soft proof setup.  Also when I close CS5 and reopen the profile is no longer in that location.
I tried to see if the profile would work with changing the cmyk setting in the color settings under edit.
CS5 menu comes up and states not a good working cmyk profile and does not load it.
From what I have read on the Blurb forums people have downloaded this profile and it works.  No replies
    for 2011, last was 2010.
I wanted to know if there is a special way to load this profile that I'm not aware of as I checked several photoshop sites
to ensure this was the right spot to put the profile in.
I am using Srgb setting for the images and  now want to soft proof them in cmyk before sending up to the Blurb they use
    4 color press Hp printers.
    Thanks
    Rose

If you look closely at the image that states  blurb profile locked – there is a little golden image of a lock next to the blurb profile and it is locked – similar to what
we see when we open a image for the first time and there is a lock (layer background) so you double click it and then background layer becomes “o” .
I followed your image.png and your profile too.  I have watched their video 3 or 4 times.  I watched a color management
color flow for an hour in Blurb. But the one hour video is using a Mac instead of Windows and the profile was already
installed on the mac but they showed the process on the mac on where to place it – not windows.
I am doing everything that is shown for windows and where you told me to input the blurb profile,
However, when I close and reopen photoshop I do not see a blurb profile in proof setup.\
The 1 hour color management video shows that the profile is named Blurb.icc but it is not in my
setup for custom proof.   That video is done with a Mac and different placement  folders.
I can only assume that Blurb.com profile needs to be changed or updated.
I sent emails to them today again and hope to see some answers monday.
There showing a 32 bit profile video instead of 64 bit but you did help me to  get the profile in the right spot.  It is a very short
video for the download process.  two screens to be exact.
They don’t have a phone number or I would call them personally.  I have sent emails with pictures today.
    Thank you

  • ACR 5 - Support for Custom Camera Profiles

ACR 4 allows users to select from a list of four device-independent colour spaces (Adobe RGB 1998, ColorMatch RGB, ProPhoto RGB and sRGB). Unlike other RAW processors, it does not allow selection of a custom camera profile. This capability is very useful when colour accuracy is of considerable importance (e.g. reproduction of art works). Does ACR 5 allow for selection of custom profiles?

When this question had been asked in the past the answer has always been, "No, because these choices are all that you need." This may seem to be a rather close minded answer. But in reality the Prophoto color space encompasses everything else that is available. So the solution has been to do all of your work in ACR in Prophoto and send the image on to Photoshop in that color space. Then convert to the desired color space in Photoshop.

  • Location for custom camera profiles created with X-Rite software for ACR/LR5 CreativeCloud?

I created a profile for a specific shoot and have used it in CS6 version of Photoshop on an older MAC - now I want to use it on my new MAC with CreativeCloud installed -- can't figure out where to copy the file so it will show up in the Camera Calibration profile drop down list.
What do I need to do?  Thanks!

Yes, thank you, very helpful! ... I am able to see my custom profile in the DropDown list of Camera Calibration options in Camera Raw now.
One tricky part ... I am also new to the feature of the "hidden folders" in OS X Mavericks ... So, I realized I could installthe X-Rite DNG profile manager from the X-Rite support site and ask that utility to open the DNG Profile folder. That way, I could see the folder path referenced in the above KnoweldgeBase article was actually there on my hard drive. Then I was able to place a copy of my custom profile in the correct spot.
Here is info from Apple Support site about how to see the hidden folder:
"The Library folder contains files used by OS X and your apps, including your personal fonts and preferences. The Library folder is hidden. If you need to open it, make sure you are in the Finder, hold down the Option key, and then choose Go > Library."
    Cheers!

  • Icc profile: dot gain in indesign cs2

    hi
wen i place picture gray scale (profile dot gain 20%) from
pS to iDcs2 - in dialog of "color" i dont have
    the option to choose profile1?
but if the picture in cmyk or rgb the option its ok, i see the profile.
it's possible iD dont have option to see profile gray scale?
    thanks

    Igal,
It is possible to do a grayscale to grayscale conversion in InDesign in a roundabout way, provided that the destination profile is grayscale, i.e., you are printing one-color.
Here, your source and destination grayscale profiles will need to be replaced by CMYK profiles with GCR black generation set to 100%. InDesign can see these profiles, and the conversion will be K-only to K-only.
You can create max black versions of your grayscale profiles in Photoshop: just select Edit / Color Settings / Working Spaces / CMYK / Custom CMYK (this is a pull down menu), set GCR Black Generation to 100%, and fill in the necessary information for dot gain. Then save the profile via Save CMYK in the same pull down menu.
Things get a little more complicated if you don't have a grayscale profile of your destination to start with, but do have a CMYK profile. Here you'll need some way of extracting the K-only dot gain data from the CMYK profile to put in the max black profile that you create in Photoshop.
    Hope this helps,
    Larry

  • Photoshop - Some professionals say dot gain 20%, others gamma 2.2 ??????

Hallo, I print only to my inkjet at home, canon 4 ink epson 8 ink. In the colour management policy for photoshop cs3 within creative suite 3 I have set the Grey dot gain to gamma 2.2 instead of the default 20%. There seems to be about a 50/50 on this issue. the botom dot gain (Spot dot gain) this is not important for me.
Could someone clarify this situation because I have found no definitive explanations on the web about this issue. Even colour management tutorils seem always to avoid these issues.
    Tankyou, Chris.

    Chris,
What you do depends on a number of factors. Dot Gain is usually used when outputting to a press, since it is more likely to reflect press behavior than a gamma curve. If you had the 'average' actual dot gain for a given press, it would probably give you a closer match to a properly calibrated monitor.
If most of your work is either displayed on web, emailed or printed on an inkjet, gamma 2.2 is probably a better overall choice. The web and email are based on sRGB, which also has a gamma of 2.2, so your grascales will display more accurately online if you use gamma 2.2. As long as you use the correct printer profiles for printing (for your paper/ink/printer), your files will be converted so they look correct on your inkjet. The more accurate your profiles, the better the result.
Photoshop will take either your gamma 2.2 or 20% dot gain encoded file and convert the numbers to your printer profile.
Dot gain curves and gamma curves are not quite the same. You can see the effect if you wish as follows: convert a color original to gamma 2.2. Then, ASSIGN a 20% dot gain curve. Your overall image will look lighter than the gamma 2.2 original. Try assigning 25% and 30% dot gain curves, and as the dot gain increases, your file will appear darker. Although not all parts of a dot gain curve mirror a gamma curve precisely, it appears to me that a gamma 2.2 curve is fairly close to a dot gain of approximately 27% or so.
Probably more theory than you wanted. If you aren't going to a press, gamma 2.2 is a good bet and fairly flexible. But you can get good prints both ways.

  • Where to store custom camera profiles on a MacBook Pro 17" OS X 10.8.5

I recently created custom camera profiles for a friend's Nikon D700 using the Adobe DNG Profile Editor. • What is the dot gain setting in the US Web Coated Swop v2 profile?

    Hey guys,
This might seem like a bit of a n00b question, but I really can't find this info any which way I Google it.
What is the default dot gain setting in the US Web Coated SWOP v2 profile?
Allow me to explain my dilema:
My printer told me to use the US Web Coated SWOP v2 this profile for a catalog we're printing. 4/4 on 100# gloss book stock. However I've used that profile in the past and the prints came out darker than I expected them to. I don't have a high enough quality printer to be able to test this in-house, but I'm pretty sure my monitor is not overly bright or set to an overly high contrast level. They indicated to me that their standard dot gain is about 10-15%
I assumed the SWOP v2 profile accounted for 20% dot gain as that appears to be the default for many of the other color settings, but I've never known for sure. I'm trying to decide if I need to use a custom profile with a higher dot gain setting.
    Thanks for any help!
    Kenzier

    Hello Kenzier,
the ICC-profile US Web Coated SWOP contains a tone reproduction curve  (TRC)
which cannot be characterized accurately by Dot Gain or Gamma.
For the entry in Color Settings > Gray we can proceed as follows:
Color Settings > Gray > Load gray > (click on) USWebCoatedSWOP.icc > Save gray
This saves a 'Black-ink-profile' with a similar name, which replaces Dot Gain
    or Gamma settings.
This profile can be interpreted by the program ICC Profile Inspector (free):
Here we have kTRC (black ink tone reproduction curve), the red line.
With the auxiliary black diagonal one can read the effective  dot gain 20%,
    the blue line.
The printer should tell you a profile which is representative (a good approximation)
    for his actual process.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann

  • CMYK Profile for Printing

    Hi
I have just migrated from CS3 to CS4 Extended. And now when I convert my image from RGB to CYMK, I am asked to set up a profile. I use photoshop for press printing. Which default CYMK profile I should go for?
    Thanx
    Max

OK. First, Rick McCleary's advice was good, best case scenario is to have a custom ICC profile describing your precise print conditions (your in-house press, the print standard, the inks, stock).
If you don't have such a profile you can use others. The three Rick mentioned describe various print conditions on coated paper. Each has a specified total ink limit which is an important consideration. To check this, make a blank CMYK document. Assign the profile. Hit "D". Click on the foreground black color and add the CMYK numbers
Japan newspaper has a TIL of 240. The profile describes an average newspaper print condition in Japan.
US Web Coated SWOP has TIL of 300, with black ink limit of 90. It describes US Web Press printing to SWOP standard on a coated sheet. The two Web profiles Rick McCleary specified have TIL of 307 and 300, with black ink limits of 97 and 98.
TIL needs to be less for uncoated stock. It can't accept as much ink. As the paper stacks up at the delivery end, if there is too much ink it can offset on the back side of the sheet. This is especially likely to happen with a large image with lots of shadow area.
Since you mentioned US Web Coated SWOP and Japan Newspaper, perhaps you've been using them in CS3. If so, and your press runs have been consistent and reliable, you could also use the same profiles in CS4.

  • CMYK dot gain not previewing in some files

When using color settings to adjust dot gain in some cmyk images, the changes don't preview. Strangely though, they preview in some cmyk images but not in others. FOr the life of me i can't figure out why its happening.
    Any ideas?

If i have a file prepared for newsprint, and it needs to be adjusted for coated stock, what's the best way of previewing and working with it using the changed dot gain?
Going from a smaller Color Space to a bigger one is usally a worse idea than the other way around.
Which continent do you work on?
ECI offers profiles that are largely relevant in Europe.

  • Customized User Profiles not loading for Network Users

I manage Macs in public computer labs and classrooms at a university. My general set up is as follows:
Clients are running 10.8.5, OD Masters are running 10.7.5. Open Directory Master to manage client preferences for Login window and screen saver. Clients bind to Active Directory for authentication purposes only. Networked users home directories are stored locally then deleted at log out. Using Deploy Studio to image and restore clients.
My customized user profiles are stored in /User Templates/Non_Localized.lproj.(I also update English.lproj for any local users that may need to be created for various reasons).
Recently I have come across a situation where, randomly, my customized user profile does not load at Login, and I am given the out-of-the-box default Apple profile. This is happening in 11 of my 14 labs. I have three labs that seem to not be affected by this.
On some labs I manage the DHCP, some labs I do not, and rely on our Networking group to supply DHCP and DNS. Because of this setup I have six different DNS server that may be in the mix. Two are Unix boxes, the other four are the Active Directory Domain Control servers. I did create a spreadsheet of all the AD/OD settings for each lab to see if I could find some kind of pattern, but don't see a way to upload it.
The one thing I do notice is that when I do a mass login using a shell script via Apple Remote Desktop, when the profile fails to build correctly, the user login is quick, much quicker than when the correct profile loads. Almost as if a packet is sent the the OD server, it's rejected, and bam, Apple's default profile loads.
I have flushed the DNS cache of the local clients using killall --HUP mDNSResponder
I've got one week to figure this out before classes start, so if you have a clue as to what's going on, I sure would be grateful.
Here are logs from both the admin's account and the user's account when the default profile fails to build:

  • E-Recruiting : Creation of Search Profile for custom infotypes

    Dear experts,
Can anyone let me know if you have created search profiles for custom infotypes in eRecruiting?
The requirement is for the TREX to be able to search for Candidates based on the fields which are defined in this custom infotype. This infotype (9999) is completely custom defined mapped to object NA.
    In the IMG,
I don't have to change the search profile type
    I created a new Z Information category.
Here, i have to specify an extraction class for this Z Information Category.
Can anyone please tell me what this should be? Can i give it as "CL_HRRCF_CEC_INFOTYPE" ?
Also, can anyone please mention the significance of the table "T77RCF_SPT_INFTY " and how we should be handling the entries here for our custom infotype ? Should we create a custom class to specify here? How should we do this ?
Any inputs & thoughts regarding this will be invaluable.
Needless to say, i created the Z information category with the class CL_HRRCF_CEC_INFOTYPE but when i run the report RCF_RECREATE_SEARCH_PROFILE,It is giving me a lot errors.
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Sowmya

    Sowmya,
To answer your question, Yes, automatic generation of NA for newly hired/created PERNR (P) is because of the integration you have activated between PA and eRecruit via BADI implementations. Look at OSS note 997181 for details on how integration works.
If you dont need integration between PA and eRecruit on PA40 then you may have to tweak the BADI's.

  • Make a custom layout in IH01 transaction for all users profile..

    hi guys,
    i have a problem..
today my co-worked asked me to find a way to make a layout in T IH01 which is the same for all the users who log in the system..
    i explain:
    i choose functional location
press F8 and see my functional location selected..
now  i want to see other fields going to settings --> field selection.. and choose all the field i want..
now i have my custom layout for this standard transaction..
but i want to keep in that way also for the other profiles.. ( ex: i use prophile DEVELOP, i want to make the same for DEVELOP1, DEVELOP2 and so on...)
    could you help?
    thanks all.
    Maurizio

    Hi
Select the fields and Create /DEVELOP layout.
Save it by giving Standard namespace /DEVELOP.
Next save layout with  /DEVELOP1,  /DEVELOP2....
Repeat the above steps for the required times.
    To Save the layout
Settings -> Layout -> Save As Variant.
