"Speckles" appearing in B&W photos

Hello.
I have scanned several black & white photos into Photoshop.
When I display these in Photoshop, in full screen, the presence of white speckles spoils the photo.
If I open the same photo outside of Photoshop, using windows viewer, again at full screen, there are no speckles.
These photos are to be incorporated in a DVD in Adobe premiere so I would like to remove the speckles. Can anyone help please?
Thanks.
Jim

Hello everyone thanks for your comments.
I resolved the problem by scanning the photos in at 300 or 600 dpi then applying "despeckle" and "salt and pepper" filters and finally resizing the images to a size that Premiere would accept.
I had initially made the DVD incorporating these photos and it was in the "finished" DVD that I saw how bad the images were.
The photos are 50 years old and are on a slightly matt paper. I suppose the paper would appear "dimpled" under magnification. I wonder if this contributed to the problem.
The fact is that in full-screen the "raw" scanned photos looked fine in the Windows viewer, considerably speckled in Photoshop and awful in the premiere DVD!
Unfortunately I have deleted all the sub-standard photos after, at last, completing the DVD.
Thanks again for your most helpful comments.

  • How can I set a 'default' watermark to appear on all my photos?

I've started processing photos on my husband's computer, using his LR.  He passed away recently.  I've created a number of new catalogs, with probably 1000 photos.
I just emailed some to family, and discovered that his watermark/copyright is on my pictures, which is not a good thing since he passed away.
What I would like to do is:
    1.  Change the watermark on those 1000 or so of my photos that are contained within 8 catalogs
    2.  Set up a default so that my watermark appears on all future photos.
I've gone through the Watermark Editor and made my own custom setting, which shows in the list of custom settings.  My watermark then appears on the photo in the preview within the Watermark Editor window.  I hit 'done' and export the photo to my desktop, but my husband's watermark still appears on it.
I've fiddled with this for a couple of hours and then looked for help online.  That's how I found your forum.
    Thank you for any assistance.

    G'day 5508,
Some thoughts. Try System settings first (this may not be the culprit).
System Preferences > Language and Region > Advanced > Currency > Australian Dollar
I can only adjust the currency cell by cell, column by column page by page.
Forgive my stupidity, but if the currency is a cell format in the template, can you select all currency cells at once, then change the currency? You will have to do this separately for each Table, but within a Table, you can select a range of cells. Quicker than cell by cell.
Once you have reformatted the document that emerged from that template, save the document as a template with the same name to overwrite the old template.
    Hope this helps, mate.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • How can I fix iPhone 4 to have instagram appear in settings - privacy - photos?

Instagram does not appear in settings -> privacy -> photos for me to turn "on".  How can I fix this?  I have an iphone 4 with IOS 7.1.1.
Instagram is uploaded on my iphone and I can access my account. I just can't upload photo's because I can not turn the photo feature on in settings for instagram.  It does not appear as a selection under photos.

I read other posts in the community and reset my location and privacy in settings -> general.  I then logged out of my instagram account and shut down my phone.  After I turned my phone back on, I logged onto instagram and tried to upload a photo.  The program then asked me several questions related to uploading pictures, after that I was able to access my pictures to upload on instagram!

I believe you will find you can again sync Photos if you delete the "iPod Photo Cache", but predict that any subsequent attempt will fail.  In my case, the enxt sync removes all the photos again - I've seen other reports of error messages upon sync.  Mine just fails silently. :-)

  • Question mark appearing in place of photo

Question mark appearing in place of photo. Happened after upgrading to iPhoto '11.

Question mark suggests a permissions issue. Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.

  • The picture ID on my outgoing Mac mail  is not mine -- it's the photo of boyfriend of my mother in law is appearing as my ID photo.  I have no link or connection with anybody  or other accounts whatsoever, and I don't have ANY third-party networks myself.

The picture ID on my outgoing Mac mail  is not mine -- it's the photo of boyfriend of my mother in law is appearing as my ID photo.  I have no link or connection with anybody  or other accounts whatsoever, and I don't have ANY third-party networks myself.    HELP!!!

Nobody but you sees that photo, it does not appear on outgoing emails.
To remove the picture rather than change it, open Address Book and select your personal card, then from the menubar select Card > Clear Custom Image. Now the system will use Apple’s generic user picture in the login window and System Preferences’ Accounts pane. Mail and Address Book will remain blank until you designate a new picture in Address Book or System Preferences > Accounts.

  • HT201077 i went to apple store because my iphone wasnt working. The guy there said he had to restore settings but i wouldnt loose my pictures in photo stream. my pictures havent appeared yet in my photo stream.Did i loose them

I went in ti the apple store my phone wasn't working correctly. the guy said he had to reset and update phone. I asked about my pictures and he said if they were in photo stream i wouldnt loose them. they still havent appeared to my phone im worried are the pictures going to appear again.

Photos remain in icloud's stream servers for a max of 30 days.  If they are older than that, then they are gone.
    IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream.  If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.

  • Why do all of my iPhoto photo stream photos no appear on my iPhone photo stream?

I have a MAC that I use to store my images on in iphoto.   I have manually put several photos (jpg) into iCloud in iPhoto in order to access them from my iphone but some of them will not appear on my photo stream on my iphone.  I have an iphone 5 with the latest software update.   My Photo stream is on as well as photo sharing.  One of my problems may be that we store our photos on my account but I sync my itunes with my husband's account.   Not sure how to rectify all of this...

    Hello Airwrecka,

  • Why does a black triangle appear instead of landscape photos from a shared library

We have an iMac using OSX10.7.5 and running iPhoto 11 v9.4.1.
There are 2 users of the iMac with separate logins.  We have an iPhoto library that is user 1 administers and imports photos to, edits photos etc.  User 1 can access and see all photos without any problems in thumbnail or large scale/full screen under their login.
When user 2 accesses the photos on the user 2 login, all photos can be seen in thumbnail, but when double clicked to show photos at larger to full screen size, all portrait pictures show ok, but after a first landscape photo sometimes showing, the rest of the landscope photos produce (sometimes) a flash of the picture but then the area of the photo goes black with a warning sign, that is a triangle with an explanation mark appears in the centre of the screen.
If user 2 runs a slideshow, the portrait pictures show up, the screen is black/blank whilst landcsape photos would be shown
A very few landscape photos can be seen and they all appear to be files of less than 1.5mb, but this does not apply to all photos of less than 1.5mb.
The photo library has photos from 2 iPhone 4s, 2 Leica and 2 Nikon cameras of varying sizes. The problem does not seem to be associated with any particular camera.
User 2 (my wife) is very unhappy!
    Any help and insights welcome.
    Many thanks
    Wally

Where is this library located? If it's in the Shared folder then that's probably why you're having problems. But it's usually with permissions, not broken links/file path to the original photo that the exclamation mark is an indication of.
Your best and most trouble free solution is to put the library on an external hard drive that's been formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with owner ship set to be ignored:
You can try the following to fix the problem but be warned that the problme may manifest itself again after some use: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • When I tap a photo in my iPhone photo gallery, the photo appears but there is always a "this movie format not supported" alert and then the alert goes away and the photo appears. These are photos I've taken with the iPhone and aren't even movies.

It's very odd. I take photos with my iPhone and then later go to view the photos in the Photo Gallery on my iPhone. The photos to appear, but I keep getting "this movie format not supported" alerts, even though I am looking at photos taken by my iPhone. The alert appears briefly just after the photo appears and then the alert goes away and I can see the photo. They are just still photos and not movies. Why wouldn't the iPhone recognize the format of photos it is taking?

That thread helped for a time.  But now it seems as though my computer is back to slow again.  But, some of the jargon is over my head as well.  Not sure I knew quoite everything they were talking about.  But thanks a lot for that, it helped I probably just need to reread it and follow the instructions again.  Thanks so much.

  • On ebay, auction photos appear then disappear. Photos display fine in Safari.

When I display an ebay page, the photo for that auction appears for a second or less, then the image disappears and is replaced by a message that says "please wait". Beneath this message is a circle of dots which change from light to dark, giving the impression that they are going in a circle. I presume this circle is implying it is loading the image.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Not sure. Has been a problem for months.

    Ok, found the fix!
If images such as google maps don't load (or won't zoom in and out): In Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey, go to your advanced JavaScript settings and make sure "Change Images" is enabled. This option was removed in Firefox 1.5 [4] so you'll need to type about:config in the address bar and check the list to verify that the related preference dom.disable_image_src_set is set to "false". If it isn't, context-click (right-click) the preference name and select "reset", or double-click to toggle.

  • Different photo appears when clicking on photo in album

I imported some photos into an album, original source was camera and photo stream.  On many, but not all of the photos in the album, when I click on it (say Photo A) a DIFFERENT photo (photo B) appears.  If a make the smallest edit to photo B then it appears correctly in the album.  This is mystifying !!

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window rebuild thumbnails - it might take a few times

  • Thumbnails appear in iPhoto, but photos cannot be opened on its own

    Hello-
I had an older camera that I have since replaced. When I uploaded the photos to iPhoto initially, they were uploaded fine. However, now when I go to open them in iPhoto, I can see them only as a small thumbnail. When I double click on the image, the photo does not appear- rather a circle with an exclamation point in it. Is there any way to save these photos? Thank you!

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
