Specs For Long Video

Hello -
We have a long video that we have broken down into 4 separate videos. Each video is approximately 17 minutes long.
Can someone tell me what the minimum or fair specs are for a 17 minute video? The person working on this project is playing around with the export settings, but the file size is still huge (37 gb). They are trying to find out what the video and audio settings should be in order to compress the file size down more.
Any guidance is appreciated.

- the video is of our Town Hall meeting and will be in a WMV format played internally only on our Intranet
- the original full video is over 60 minutes long
- the video was cut up into four separate videos to cut down on file size and make it easier for the viewer
- After Affects CS5.5 is being used for editing
- There is sound on the video
- There are also slides being inserted introducing each section (for example - new employees, Q&A, etc.)

I have been battling computers and a "big box store" for 3 months now. All computers are have been under warranty so I am on my third machine:
Now I have my third machine and I was told I needed to purchase all new software so with that I upgraded to PsE & PE 10. PE 10 works just fine - as far as I can tell. On my old machine - PsE lagged - but I knew that when I purchased it.
This machine and the one previous, were replacements and I was told that these would "more than run" my programs.

Basically I have the same issues as I have had before but slightly different. Before I had hours to wait for rendering - now I have no redering issues at all, and with my old machine and programs it lagged quite a bit. PsE10 also tells me if my videos that I am importing need different settings which is nice.
When I edit for long periods of time PsE10 wants to quit on me. Sometimes it decides to give me these white vertical bars or lines then if I just click over to something else, when I come back, they are gone (like in the second photo)
Sometimes I also get what I call "confetti" from previous pages - but this is not just in PsE it is in Office 2010 and even on the internet. I have more than likely been in PsE10 prior to each external incident happening.
So, today, I took the same raw video, edited in Movie Maker (never have an issue there - just limited); saved the files; imported into PsE10 and now I don't seem to have any issues - so far. I don't even have lag time which does not bother me since I have dealt with that issue for years
All of this for this question - and "no" - I will not trade in for a desktop machine (already have one - this one is portable and I take it with me so I can work)
Would adding 2 g RAM to this machine solve some of the "white lines" and "confetti" issues I get? Also, from what I have read here, am I correct in assuming my video camera is out of date?

Just talked with my husband and he made a good point, all of these hand held cameras were probably designed to take video, edit on screen, and then upload to YouTube or blog. Is that a correct assumption?

When you start your Premiere Elements project, do you select the project settings for AVCHD Lite?
If that doesn't work, try the settings for Flip Mino HD.
Unfortunately, the Xacti is not well supported by Premiere Elements, which is probably at the root of your problems. But, if you're sure you've got the latest version of Quicktime and you're using the best possible project settings, you should be okay with that computer.
Just makes sure to go to either the nVidia or ATI site and get the latest drivers for your graphics card. And go to Windows Update and ensure you have even the non-critical updates for Windows. You may also want to swap Microsoft Security Essentials for your current antivirus and remove any Norton software. Security Essentials is very efficient and non-intrusive -- it's also free, of course, and at least as good as any antivirus out there.
And, for good measure, run a Deep Care tune-up with Advanced System Care Free.

The weakest link in the chain seems to be your hard drive. It's only 5400 rpm -- which is rather slow for today's computers. Is this a laptop, by any chance? Laptops are usually built for portability, not speed, so slower hard drives are pretty common with them.

What are the specs for iPod video

i wish to manually convert .mov (video with audio) to vPod format.
anyone know where there is a list of the specs required, movie size, format, audio format?
i'm trying to figure out the following:
i have two movies of like nature. i drop ,them both in iTunes. i tell iTunes to convert for iPod and it says one does not need conversion. i am trying to figure out why the other does. they are both 44.1/h.264.
what is the movie size spec and all the specs for QT to vPod conversion? (i want do to it manually.)
i think i have it, is this correct: 320x180 (16:9). i assume vPod can play both 48.hz audio and that that does not have to be converted to 44.1 (both aac)?

H.264 refers to the actual video compression
algorithm. In this case the H.264 video format is
specifically stored in this file container. One the
other hand, the ".mp4" file container is a more

files. And, at the other end of the scale, the ".mov"
file container is the most generic since it can

i did not know that .mp4 also served for h.264. the graphic container of .m4v i had sort of noticed, however i did not or had not for .mov, thanks.

i'm not sure i understand why my data rate was converted where a lesser data rate was not. (536 vs. 262)

How is this for a PC spec for home video editing?

OK - we've decided to get the new PC now, focused around decent performance for video editing at home when we do it. Any feedback on the below would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to put in my "principles", but as you note I've highlighted some questions around these.
Principles
* Decent computer for Home Video Editing - so when we do it want it to be reasonable from a performance point of view (not annoying). Also want assurance for the video data that a single HDD crash won't mean lost data.
* Hard Drive Configuration - Assume RAID 1 for data
C: 500GB - Operating System (1 x 500GB)
D: 500GB - Swap Area for O/S (1 x 500GB)
E: RAID 1 Redundancy for Data ( 2 x 1TB )
* 64 bit Windows 7 Pro
* Questions re Principles
Is it really worth having a separate drive (D: drive) for Swap?
Is there any real need to have a drive F: (another one) for exports? This is non-real time so it shouldn't be an issue should it?
Any major improvement re moving say the C: drive to SSD? (or not worth the $$)
SATA II versus SATA III drives? (I've assumed both are ok when picking)

You're spec. looks like a great start for what you are trying to do. I have a few comments, and also two questions!
Comments:
- Spec. generally looks fine
- I particularly like your case and p/s choices!
- For a home PC, you may consider bumping up your OS choice to Ultimate, which adds some nice multimedia capabilities
- Regarding the D drive for swap (and I assume you mean Premiere Pro media cache and media cache database too) will definitely speed up aspects of Premiere Pro, but likely be unnoticeable for other home PC day to day use. Why not build out the system and decide then if you need the extra speed for Premiere Pro - it is so easy to add something like that later.
- I'd vote no regarding a need for a F output drive for this system
- Regarding your OS drive... Speed and responsiveness versus cost - what do you choose? This really is a personal choice. I will say that a 2x1TB RAID 0 OS boot array would probably be a bigger step up in performance than a similar priced SSD option and a 2xSSD (60 to 80GB) array will perform better than a single larger SSD.
- Sata II vs Sata III - I have some of each now, and I would agree with other posters and articles on the Internet that say the often larger cache size on the Sata III models is more important than the Sata III interface. Keep going like you are going, with the assumption that both are OK.
- finally, your CPU; personnaly, with the new lower cost pricing on the i7-970, I'd suggest you downgrade to a i7-950 and same some money or upgrade to the 32nm 6-core i7-970 CPU and jump to a significantly new level of performance and power per watt
Questions:
- what version of Premier Pro will you be running?
- what will be your workflow (i.e. DV, Sony consumer AVCHD, Canon DSLR, etc.)?

Best Compression for Youtube for long video

I have a 45 minute film I would like to upload to Youtube. I have outputted a file from FCP7 using settings as they are, ProRes422 and it is 1920 x 1080 and 40.4GB. I then used the Youtube presets in Compressor and now have a .mov file 1280 x 720 and 2.83GB. This upload from where I am in Australia will take approx 7 hours.
Can anyone please recommend a better setting that gives me good quality and a size that wont give me a long upload time? The film was shot on a Canon XA10, frame rate 25.

Three ways to make a smaller file (with the assumption you are using H.264 as the codec)
1. Lower the bit rate (image may degrade as there are less bits to carry the subtle image information - do a test to see what's acceptable)
2. reduce the image size (smaller images need less bits to carry the same color subtlety - you will also need to reduce bit rate as well - no use shrinking the image and keeping the same high bit rate - you may see marginal file size reduction)
3. reduce length (less to encode...)
Alternatively, start the upload just before you go to bed. Get a good night's sleep and the file should be at it's destination by the time you wake up.

Whats the best file output spec for a file output i.e rather than an AVCHD disc

I have been making travel videos for many years and in all the formats available at the time at the time. I moved from analogue to digital and latterly HD video (1080x1920) via Panasonic HDC-SD600 camcorder. Using software I created AVCHD Discs and played them on my Blu Rayer Player. However I now realise that the discs can degrade? and start to stick on playback. So I moved on to creating Video Files that I can transfer to my flash drive to feed directly to my HD tv. In previous software I took the option MP4 HD and I had no problem. However the software did start giving an unrelated problem and I changed to Adobe Premiere Elements 12. But the MP4 HD option offered in Publish and Share when transferred to Flash Drive will not play on TV (No Movies Found). Could it be that I reformatted the flash drive to NTFS to allow greater tha 4G?. I have scanned various adobe forums and tutorials but not luckly enough to find one that explains the best outputs for this type of use
Can you help. I am slightly knowledgeable about codecs and containers.

Finally solved my problem. It turned out to be the Flash Drive! I realised this was at fault when the TV stopped seeing any files irrespective of format. I re-formatted the drive back to FAT 32. I then used a ten minute video and with PE12 Publish and Share options created 6 files with different formats. 2 of these played back perfectly. I then went and done some homework and read up on Frames and Refresh rates and how PAL and NTSC still matters in this digital age. I finally opted for the AVCHD option of MP4 H264 1920x1080p at 25fps. Which I believe is correct for PAL countries.
My TV has 100hz refresh rate so that means at 25fps each frame is repeated 4 times every 25th of a second. Forgetting all the Tech when I watched the video I found it really good and that decides it for me!
It does leave me with something to live with however, I am apparently stuck with the 4 gigabyte barrier of FAT 32. However this gives about 30 minutes of HD video so I may have to opt for Video part one and Video part two for longer videos. I will re check the spec of my TV just to ensure the USB inputs are definately restricted to FAT 32.
I am now thinking about DNLA as another means of playing a video file from computer to TV. But this new to me so it looks like more homework.
Any tips or help will be welcome

Preset for maintaining video in 640x1336 size for App Store Video

I am trying to create a video for the App Store and it requires that the video is 640x1336. I have raw footage in this format but there is no preset available to keep it as such once I import it into Premiere Elements 13 on Windows (as well as for export). Is there a way to work around this?

I'm not familiar with stagevideo. I'm going to look into it more.
The app was created with Flash CS6. The video (FLV) was embedded in the timeline. Flash actually warns me when doing this that the audio will likely go out of sync for longer videos. Unfortunately they are fairly long. It also tends to make the app act a little strange. For instance, the second video would just stop towards the later part of the video.
I realize embedding these videos isn't the best solution, so finding a different method would be great. But the problem is that the videos have to be included with the app, since the users won't have an internet connnection when using it.
I could get you a copy of the app, but it's pretty large with the embedded videos...
For the time being, I've simply removed the audio from the videos. This is a temporary solution as the app will be used at tradeshows where visitors likely won't be able to hear them anyway.

Need specs for PC to drive 30-inch monitor to full resolution.

Have acquired an HP LP3065 monitor. Now seek to acquire a PC to drive it to full 2560x1600 res. Old Dell Pentium D computer (XP) with integrated video brings it to 1900. Any power supply, memory, MB recommendations would be helpful. Standing by is a Nvidia 8800 GTS video card from BFG Tech that a gamer friend pulled from his system.

To get that resolution it all depends on the specs of your video card. And if you install a new video card with that resolution capability, you'd want to check the specs of the video card to see how much power is required. If the PC you are using doesn't have a strong enough power supply, you'd need to get one that has more power. I'm not familiar with Dell products so I don't know about your power options. Computer specs for nice 3D rendering/ after effects rendering and video rendering in general ?

I would like to know what the perfect specs for a laptop/workstation/computer are, so that I could do my creative work from home..my old laptop (Macbook Pro, 8Gb Ram, V 2010) is not good enough for 3D rendering, not even Video rendering or After Effects... I need to know what graphics card for eg or how much Ram or what I need to look for in a computer so that I won't get any error messages after rendering for half a day anymore...;) (--> very annoying) Money is not a first priority...i would first like to know, what the best option would be that one could have and then down size from there;)
I would appreciate every help:) my laptop is dying...i need something new and better;)

Regardless of workflow, you want a workstation, not a laptop. You will get much more bang for your buck.
Also, as others have said, Windows machines tend to be better choices than Macs right now. And that's coming from two people who used to use/love Macs...
In general, you want the fastest clock speed on your processor that you can afford. You want as many cores as you can get with that nice, high clock speed.
Ideally, you want 4GB of RAM per core of your processor - MINIMUM 16 GB of RAM, (but get as much as you can afford).
You want an SSD for your cache and a good-sized regular hard drive to hold footage, renders, etc.
GPU matters for Premiere and any third-party plugins that use it (like Red Giant Universe, Element 3d, Mettle's ShapeShifter, etc.), but not for AE and not for Cinema 4D (which comes free with AE these days).
Again, this is just some generalization. For more specific info, we'll need to know more about what you're doing.

Check the Advanced ➙ Project Information menu option to make sure the playing time of the entire project, movie plus menu is below the 120 minute limit.

Please help me with this urgent viewing and editing question for a long video clip.

Hi, I have never used this software before and when I imported a 2 hours and 12 minute video clip of my sister's wedding into the system and added it as one sequence into the program it would only allow me to watch and edit the first 2 minutes.
Why is that and how can I rectify this so that I can watch and edit the whole clip?
Also, can such a long video clip be edited by trimming it and creating transitions where I see fit?

I'm using Dropbox on my iPhone 4 and tried downloading a long video. It just stopped and has been "stuck" there for over a month.

I tried downloading a rather long video from my iPhone 4 to Dropbox. It started to download, but then stopped. It has been "stuck" for over a month. The video shows up in my Dropbox folder as still downloading, but it is grayed out so I can't even delete it or access it all. My phone shows a notification on the Dropbox app and when I open it, the indicator on my phone shows it's trying to download something but it doesn't complete it.
I've tried turning my phone off and on, but it's still in the "stuck" mode in my Dropbox folder. The video doesn't show up in any of my other Dropbox locations.
Anyone have any ideas?

Delete and re-download the Dropbox app. You will have to sign in again and adjust app settings.

How to chop a long video to fit for a song

Hi, I have a 50 min long video that I want to chop into approx 40 short pieces to fit for a 4 minute song and place those short clips on beat markers. Is there someone I can advice with?
I would like to make 40 short clips first and then just drag them all into the project onto beat markers.

I found a way to do it. One question though-when I change a length in a short clip, how to ensure that subsequent clip will not move forward, but only get shorter for the amount I prolonged previous clip?

Thumbnails no longer appear for .dv video files - Please help!

I have about 10,000 .dv files on my hard drive and every since installing Mavericks, the thumbnails have disappeared. I see that if I try to open them, QT automatically converts them to a .mov file. This isn't really a solution since I import them into my video editing software and I just need to be able to see the thumbnails to tell which video file is which.
I guess either of the two solutions would work, but I don't know where to go about looking for the anwer:
I either need to be able to:
1. Get the video thumbnails to show up again for .dv files in Mavericks
or
2. Find a way to batch convert about 10,000 .dv files to .mov so the thumbnails will again appear.
Any ideas?

I've exhausted all the searching I can online and I've come up with nothing. Looks like my only solution is to use a program like Wondershare Video Converter and convert all the .dv files into .mov one directory at a time.
I did one test and it took a couple of hours for the first directory, and I've got about 200 directories of files to convert.
Usually, I'm not one to be upset by things Apple changes in their OS, but this is one of those things where I simply cannot figure out why they would have removed the thumbnails for a video type. One that has existed for many years.
Strange.
If anyone thinks of any other solution, please let me know. I'm probably not going to do the conversion for a couple of weeks in hopes that another solution does come up.
