Specs of New Mac Hardware (including Mini)
I'm beginning to think I'm living in a 'LOST' style alternative universe in which Apple has denied the existence of Blu-Ray discs.
I'm fairly sure I had a Flash-Sideways (sorry HTML5-Sideways) that a new Mac had been released with a built-in Blu-Ray player/recorder.
I guess the Man in Black Turtle Necks doesn't want us to get off the iSland of Tunes.
Any thoughts fellow travelers?
Cheers Stu
I wasn't speculating I was attempting in a humorous way to get a discussion going about why almost four years to the day after the commercial launch of the Blu-ray format on to the US market, Apple has failed to produce a single piece of hardware with this component in.
If that is prohibited then so be it.
Cheers Stu

Specs of new Mac Mini worse than the old Mac Mini?
I just looked at the new Mac Mini, released today I think, but it seems that you can no longer select SSDs, and the highest-spec Mac Mini had TWO SSDs available - not available anymore!
Also, I waited for this update with the hope that MORE RAM would be available - I really want a 32GB machine to run as a slave, and I need LOTS of RAM for this machine, but there's no option for that without buying the Trash Can Mac Pro, which has all sorts of features that I DON'T need.
What is the go with Mac Mini specs going BACKWARDS?
Also, any advice would be great. I'm considering having a PC made for my slave computer, but I'd rather not do that, PCs suck. lol.
Thanks! The new Mac mini does support 'flash' storage aka SSD storage. The difference is that the Apple listed options for the new Mac mini for flash aka. SSD storage now use the PCIe interface and not the old SATA interface. PCIe is much faster than SATA.
The new Mac mini does support a 'Fusion' drive, this is Apple's 'hybrid' drive approach which combines a traditional hard disk with a 128GB of Flash storage. Since the new Mac mini does support a Fusion drive and a Fusion drive includes a traditional hard disk we can safely deduce that the new Mac mini does have at least one traditional SATA drive bay.
What is not yet clear is how many PCIe flash storage connectors it has and how many SATA connectors it has. It could be for example that the 1TB flash storage choice is actually made up from 2 x 512GB, however since the new Mac Pro also lists the same PCIe flash storage choices of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB and the new Mac Pro only has a single PCIe SSD connector it is highly likely the new Mac mini also only has a single PCIe connector.
While it would be nice if it still had the option of two SATA drives and also a single PCIe flash drive, I think it is more likely that there is only one SATA connector. This makes internal RAID1 less practical, not only would it now be very hard to get two matching capacity 'drives' but even if you did they would be at vastly different speeds. One can still use external RAID storage. -
Remove iLife Apps from New Mac Hardware with OSX 10.8
I have a new iMac that came preinstalled with OSX 10.8 and the Macintosh iLife apps (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand). I do not want the iLife apps as I do not use them but there no longer seems to be a way to clean install the OS without these applications. I tried trashing the apps but the App Store keeps trying to update them, so clearly something remains.
How do I get rid of these applications completely and have the App Store recognize that they are gone? The reason macjack and tzikowski recommend doing the migration when the computer is booted for the first time is due to how Migration Assistant works. MA doesn't copy Applications & files, it copies Applications & accounts. If you've already logged into your computer, when you use Migration Assistant it will copy your account from your old computer to the new one. Most people have a preferred account name and have already set up their new computer with it so when MA is run and the old account is copied, it has to be renamed. This can be disturbing or disappointing and yes, you can simply delete the first account you made and change the name of the migrated one but the short name isn't changed, just the long name.
But when you boot the computer for the first time you can migrate before any account is created so the old account is copied to the new computer and your account name remains the same. This is the only difference between Migration Assistant and what's called Setup Assistant in the first boot utility. -
I was able to transfer all my library but when I sync the mini to it the unit gets half way and the device gets disconnected from the computer. It tells me that the ipod was improperly removed and it doesn't show as hooked up to the computer any longer. The songs never make it to the ipod. Any suggestions?
It can be one of the following :-
1. Faulty iPod cable
2. Faulty USB hub
3. Hard drive problem of your iPod - you need to do a restore to solve it -
New Mac Mini and iMovie6, & iDVD
Hi
I was wondering if someone can answer these questions for me. I have a 12" powerbook and iMac 800mhz power pc G4 (lampshade kind), and I have been editing movies in iMovie and creating DVD with iDVD. But it's getting a bit slow.
I was thinking about getting the new Mac Duo core mini 1.83 GHZ with 2 gig of Ram to use as editing bay (iMovie) and to create DVD using iDVD.
Is the new Mac Mini good enough for that? Has anyone encounter any problem with previous mac mini using iLife? I don't edit a lot, maybe twice a year, 1 1/2 hour or 2 hour project. I already have external monitor (viewsonic) and apple keyboard and mouse.
or is it entirely better to go with iMac 24 inch.?
Any thoughts?
AlexIn context, the current $799 Mac mini has very similar overall performance to my G5 2.0 dual processor power mac, bought in October 2003, so while the drive is slower (not all that critical in video editing work since 5400rpm is certainly sufficient) a mini will perform notably better in iMovie, and render to iDVD much faster than your present 800MHz PB. Certainly, comparing the performance of my 800MHz TiBook in iMovie and Final Cut Express against even the older 1.5GHz G4 mini with IGb RAM, the mini was far smoother and more responsive to use.
There's no doubt that a 24" iMac would provide a faster, richer, environment in which to work, and if your budget would extent to that system it would seem a poor choice not to opt for that, but as has been said many, many times in these discussions, it's also worth bearing in mind that the mini's performance and capabilities are not defined by it's size. A Mac mini is far more powerful than merely for basic computing needs! -
Will my LED 27 Cinema Display work with the new Mac Pro?
Will my LED 27 Cinema Display work with the new Mac Pro?
Mini DisplayPort (like 27" LED Cinema Display) is a direct subset of ThunderBolt (like Mac pro late 2013). It plugs right in and the display portion "just works", no adapters required.

My new mac mini does not see usb drives, but in hardware info the usb is visible
my new mac mini does not see usb drives, but in hardware info the usb is visible
i'tried several usb flash drives even brand new ones, they are visible onder hardware info but they are not on the desktop nor in the finder.
what is wrong and doe anyone has a solution ?It does not show up in disk utility, its only visible through systeminformation.
When you plug in the USB flash drive and then refresh systeminformation it becomes visible.
To remove it I shut down the computer because I cannot eject the USB device anywhere.
After starting up again when I have removed the flash drive it has gone from the systeminfo USB list.
By the way my USB mouse and keyboard are working fine, I also changed ports of these and they still keep on working so I don't think the USB ports are defect.
I guess it some kind software problem, and because I'm new to Apple I do not know much about it how to solve this. -
New Mac Mini thunderbolt to DVI adapter issues
Hi there,
I'm working on a new studio installation. We have a new Mac Mini that we're trying to connect up to a 30-inch Cinema HD display with DVI input. We have a Kanex C30 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter that plugs into the Thunderbolt port and one of the USB ports (for power) on the back of the Mini, but despite our best efforts we aren't getting anything on the display. Going Mac - adapter - display results in about 7/8ths of the screen going white and displaying two green and misshapen Apple logos for about 5 seconds before it goes blank.
Ultimately we want to run it over quite a long DVI cable and currently have an Extron signal booster in place, which works perfectly from the Mac Mini's HDMI output through an HDMI to DVI adapter. However we're already using the HDMI output to feed another monitor.
So two questions really:
1. Can the Mac Mini feed two separate displays of different sizes? The 30-inch over Thunderbolt to DVI and another Apple 24 inch display over HDMI to DVI.
2. Does anybody have any experience with the Kanex or can you recommend an adapter that will work for us?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This whole process has been a very long headache!
Many thanks,
JoshHi Josh,

Yesterday I received a new mac mini (actually, a refurbished one that was originally released in July, sold from Apple). It downloaded a bunch of stuff when I did the software update, including an EFI Firmware update for the mac mini.
As far as I can tell everything ran just fine. However, I noticed in my applications folder (possibly under "utilities" though I may be wrong), an item with the circle/slash through it. It was the firmware update. I tried to open it and I received a message that the application could not be opened because of a problem when downloading it.
I deleted the file, hoping the software update would catch it again, no luck.
This is a new system and I'm hesitant to start deleting receipts, library files, etc., on my own.
I did unplug it and re-boot. No change.
I checked for firmware updates and looked at my system info and it looks like I have the current version.
I tried to manually download the latest firmware update for my system and it told me that this software wasn't for my system, although I'm sure I downloaded the right file for my system.
Why would that app have the circle/slash through it but looked like it may have run based on my system info?
Should I do anything else at this point or just leave it alone?
Thanks.I have a Mac Mini (mid-2011) with that same app circled out. I just left it as is in Utilities since I have no idea what it is and it's not hurting anything. Unfortunately, it won't show up in Installed Software.
You said you deleted the app file from Utilities. Is the Mac mini EFI Firmware Update.app still in your Trash? If so, why not just put it back and not worry about it?
As far as I know the firmware is installed. Check your System info by clicking -> About This Mac -> More Info....-> System Report. Check the Hardware Overview and the Boot ROM Version:. It should be the same as my Mac Mini below if the EFI 1.3 firmware was installed.
Here's the link where the download resides. Note that it's for mid-2011 Mac Mini. -
Cannot reinstall 10.8 on new Mac mini
OK, so here's what I did so far:
Bought a new Mac mini (i7)
Moved apps and data from my old Mac mini using the migration assistant
All went smooth up to here. Now what I want to do is do a fresh installation of Mountain Lion
after all. And this is where the problems start.
I still have the downloaded Mountain Lion app on my external hard drive. When I
double click on it it tells me that my Mac is not compatible with Mountain Lion.
OK, may be it's outdated (the installer). So I went over to the App Store trying
to download the installer again. No such luck: The App Store also tells me
that I cannot download this software because my computer is not compatible
with Mac OSX 10.8
Does anyone have an idea what might cause this sudden incompatibility?
Thanks,
ChristianThe OS X 10.8.2 that shipped with the October 23 announcement hardware (including your new mini) is a special hardware build that does not exist in the App Store. Any prior Mountain Lion installer that you may have had laying about, will tell you it cannot install. OS X 10.8.3 when it arrives, should rectify this issue.
You will need to to do a clean install from Apple's Internet Recovery HD.
Make sure you have a wired Ethernet connection. Reboot holding command+option+R. This will fetch the special version of Mountain Lion from Apple specific to your mini as it was shipped. -
Migrate from old G4 to new mac mini
how can i migrate from an old mac without airport to a new mini? i have them connected by a firewire cable.
See the following: Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins Contextual Menu Items Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following: >MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- Migration Tips and Tricks:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

Kernel Panics-Brand New Mac Mini
I am experiencing ongoing Kernel Panics on a new Mac Mini (purchased in July 2012). Running Mountain Lion, 8 gig RAM (Apple Branded). What I've tried to fix it:
Took to Apple Store, hardware test: Passed
Reinstall of Mountain Lion
Uninstalled various 3rd party software including: LogMeIn, PS3 Media Server, Fuse, NTFS+ (don't recall exact name), DVD Fab.
Disconnected all external devices including External Hard Drives, DVD Drives, cameras etc.
They keep coming, pretty much daily (often 2 or 3 a day).
Here is my latest log:

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Big ole' me too here. Tried on 3 different Mac minis. First 2 were originally Mac mini servers that were reformatted and Base OSX 10.8.2 installed, no server. Lots of automatic reboots. Only app added was FM Server. These were installed from scratch, no user migration, no other apps installed. Last Mac mini was a straight non-server, brand new off the shelf, only FMServer installed (and FM Pro - not running). Getting reboots from kernel panic several times a day. All these Mac minis had SSD drives. I have Time Machine running, but its set to ignore the FM Server folder. FMS is set to back-up the DBs to a FW800 connected drive. Apple Display connected via Thunderbolt -not sure any of this matters. (Also repaired permissions, ran fsck, Safe Boot, etc...).
Don't know much about tracing the reason for a kernel panic but saw this near the top:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: java
It's been happening for months, been banging my head aginast the wall thinking it was something I've done... -
I have been surfing the discussions for a while, and can not find a reason why. I have been using mac for about 10 years now, and I can not figure out why my new mac mini with the i7 chip is running deadly slow. I dont download anything that isnt on the iTunes library or the App store. It has loads of storage left.
Here are my specs:
OSx v 10.9.4
Proc: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Mem: 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I have 600GB left of storage
When I boot the computer it boots really slow. Like 4 or 5 minutes from the time i press the power button until I can log in.
After logging in, if I click to open a program I can literally sit 4 or 5 minutes before its open.
It has done this since I opened the box and fired it up for the first time.
Are mac mini's normally this poor of performance? It drives us nuts as our old iMac was WAY faster than this and it was nowhere near as "powerful" of a computer.
If someone out there can explain what I can do I would sure appreciate any help.EtreCheck version: 1.9.15 (52)
