Spectrum Expert - USB or Express Card

The Spectrum Expert is a great tool but the problem is to find a notebook with a PC-Card / PCMCIA slot.
I know that there are adapters available for EC to PC-Card but I think this is not a solution for customers.
I didn't find any information on the Cisco website about an alternative.
Question: When will be a Spectrum Expert Card available with USB or EC connector?

I know the AP SE-Connect feature but we need a portable solution.
Cisco should think about a USB or Express Card solution.
The APs are working with the Spectrum Expert and it will be hard to explain to a customer that he should use a 3rd party solution to get a mobile solution.

None of the cards they list would have difficulty over USB. Each of these cards already have similar counterparts that are available to connect directly to USB (vs. using an express card). This would seem most useful for people that may already have express cards that they use in other notebooks so they could use them in a machine without an express card slot... otherwise I would imagine people would just get the USB versions of these devices. USB hubs can obviously connect directly to a USB port, memory card readers are also available for connecting directly to a USB port. RS232 is pretty dated and USB can easily handle RS 232 throughput. I'm not exactly sure what a printer card is... but printers generally connect via USB (or parallel in older machines)... again... very easy for USB to handle. In order for it to work with firewire, they would have to have a hardware translator built into it. I'm sure they would list firewire if it was an option.

Firewire Solution? USB To Express Card Adapter Cable + Firewire Expresscard

Has anyone tried this as a possible solution for getting firewire on their macbook 13.3 unibody? In theory it would seem that you could use this USB To Express Card Adapter Cable and plug in a firewire expesscard. Anyone tried it?

USB or Express card so

Hi,
I've got a notebook which I use for gaming and I was hoping to get a USB or express card sound card in order to improve my sound quality and take the sound processing load off of the CPU while gaming. If I understand it correctly the x-fi expresscard doesn't actually do any sound processing it's self (it is all still done by the CPU). Does creative have any other USB or express card soundcards which actually have a dedicated processing chip?

Neither the AirPort Express (AX) nor the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) support any type of USB modems, USB networking card, nor USB networking in general.

USB/eSata express card not working on stock kernel

Hello everyone,
I have a weird problem and I don't seem to find any solution by myself. Let me give you some background info on what I plan to do.

The card does work fine only on the Ubuntu machine. I would like to make it run on the two other ones as well. I thought I might get help here getting it to work on machine 3 and then transfer the results to machine 2. What really matters to me is eSata, btw, I do not even have a USB 3.0 device to test with.

I wouldn't know of any attached disks, and neither does it show up. Note that it is only the card I plugged in, no hard drive attached to it.

Apart from the supposedly found block device (can't judge) I am not sure if there is anything that is really eSata specific and not USB 3.0 related.
So far what I think I can tell from the output is that the modules
pciehp pci pcieport
seem to be dealing with the express card as such whereas
xhci_hcd
takes care of USB 3.0. I cannot see any clear reference to the eSata connector, which might not be surprising if the bus is just passed through (again: not sure).

Sticking to my suspicion that this might just be a USB related issue and eSata might still work due to some sort of passthrough, I attached the very eSata drive that I could mount on Ubuntu. It did not work.
I then researched and found this blog post: http://okomestudio.net/biboroku/?p=1360
So I downloaded the pkgbuild for the arch linux core kernel and checked the config. It matched the recommendations.
Another hint I found was to unload acpiphp and force-reload it. However, this tip does not seem to apply to the arch kernel:

rmmod: ERROR: Module acpiphp is builtin.
Anyone any idea on how to make the card work?

USB PCI-Express Card half working???

I just purchased and installed a SYBA PCI-Express USB 2.0 5 Ports Controller Card (Model SD-PEX-NEC5U) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186010&Tpk=SD-PEX-NEC5U
I think it's half-way working. I did some researching prior to my purchase and I was under the impression that the Mac Pro (2006) could accept any PCI-express card. I have my Kensington USB bluetooth adapter plugged in (to the internal port) and it powers the adapter light and both my wireless mouse and wireless keyboard work perfectly. However any of the devices I plugged into the rear 4 ports are not working... (ie my Western Digital 1 TB hard drive that has 2 partitions on - one for Time machine backups and one for regular storage)
According to the Syba website, Mac OSX is not listed as a supported OS. The card came with a drivers disc but doesn't have any Syba drivers on it... tons of other manufacturers.
Can anyone offer advice about installing drivers or "adding hardware" (a la Windows)? Again, it's working with my bluetooth... so whats up with my hard drive?

As for MyBook - they can be iffy; if a drive fails, it is built into the case, so I prefer to buy cases with USB/FW and that you can install a drive yourself, even if comes with one.
USB: when there is FireWire and you can easily add SATA PCIe, yes they cost more but then they can drive multiple drives at full performance too.
When you buy generic cards, see if they use the same chipset as found in Sonnet Allegro and others.

And no, it requires PCIe, but not just any (and even PC with Windows 7, some cards can also be problem).

Install usb 3 express card

I installed a Rocketfish usb express card today. The instructions say to connect a 4 pin floppy power plug onto it. My computer has this plug, but the wires don't reach to the usb card. The card still works without this plug connected anyway. ( I'm a little disappointed though, it's only about twice as fast as the usb 2) Will this be OK without the power plug connected?

I got myself USB3 expresscard on my laptops. You really notice the performance change on quad core compared to my dual core..

I checked OWC and they are saying Aaxeon for any PCIe Mac (dual core, quad, and Mac Pro). SIIG is probably, as usual, just reselling and putting their name on someone else's (and probably someone else's firmware, too).
I don't like the "20MB/sec writes based on manuf's tests" part though. But I probably will pick one up nonetheless.

Belkin firewire express card help

I need installing the belkin usb/firewire express card. Everytime I plug it in, the mbp tries to install it, then it locks up my entire computer.
I'm trying to import video from a camcorder that uses a firewiere 400 cable. I thought I could use this express card to import the video via firewire 400 but it doesn't look like it's working.

You shouldn't need the express card - FW 800 is backwards compatible with FW 400 and should work as long as you have the physical connections correct. I say should because some folks have had problems with FW 400 devices on FW 800, so it's not necessarily a sure thing...

I did a little searching for that card. The more I looked at it the more I felt that, yes, it needs a driver, and no, one doesn't exist for the Mac. So it looks like that is a card only supported for PC's. But to be sure, if I were in your place at this point, I would contact MSI directly.

Does any company make a Express Card 34 that can be used in the 17 for USB 3.0

Theoretical and acual speeds for all types data connections can differ due to several variables. I cannot tell you if my eSata connection has ever achieved the theoretical maximum speed because I have never measured it. However I have compared transfer times against Firewire with large files and it is noticeably faster (at least by 50%+). Therefore I highly recommend having it if you need to transfer large files from one HDD to another.
If you have a recent MBP, you already have a Thunderbolt connection. I do not believe that there will be a Thunderbolt Express Card for older MBPs because they are not configured to accept that technology.

R61i USB 3.0, 54mm EXPRESS CARD adapter

Hi there again.
After doing all the possible upgrades on my laptop ThinkPad R61i TYPE 7650-D7G 15.4in,
I have this problem with the Express Card slot.
I've bought this 54mm USB 3.0 express card but when I stick it into the slot it doesn't seem to fit. It just gets into the slot without "locking" anywhere.
So my question is this. Is there something wrong with my card (new buy) or doesn't my laptop accept such a card?
Is it just a CardBus slot? And if so, is there a way (adapter, hardware) to use my USB 3.0 Express Card?
Here's a photo of the card I bought. This cable came with the Express Card. Don't really know what it's for... It seems that one end goes into the slot between the Card's 2 usb slots.

To answer the question in your first post, the USB cable that came with the ExpressCard was for power. The other end would have connected to one of your laptop's existing USB ports. You would've used that for certain devices which required more power, in which case you would've only gained 1 USB 3.0 port, not 2
The picture of your laptop (with the "O" on the eject button) means you definitely have a CardBus PC Card slot, not an ExpressCard slot. You won't be able to use that ExpressCard. PC Card, also referred to as PCMCIA card, is an older, slower technology. As you now realize, a 68-pin Cardbus PC card will fit that slot. If your objective is to gain extra USB ports, your best bet is to return that ExpressCard and search for "usb pc card" online. There are PC Cards which provide 2 USB ports or even 4 USB ports. However, you will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds. Yes, you could use a CardBus-to-ExpressCard Adapter but, once again, you will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds. (Also note the one you link to in your first post converts PC Card to ExpressCard/34 only). An even more inexpensive solution may be a "USB port hub."

Just bought a blazing fast new PC to run Premiere and realized that although I now have lots of USB 3.0 ports on it I don’t have a Express card that supports USB 3.0
Looking for a faster way to unload an SXS card into my PC – Searched but can’t seem to find anything. Ideas?

I feel your pain. My USB 2 Sony SXS card reader/writer tranfers XDCAM EX files at 31MB/s, which means you can copy 31 GB ( about 2 hours) in about 17 minutes.
With my Dell Precision M6600 and its Express/card slot, the same operation only takes 3 minutes and 17 seconds at 160 MB/s.
Expect transfer speeds of 80-90 MB/s with a USB 3.0 reader/writer but Sony has yet to come up with one.

Att express card, novatel usb adapter, macbook

I'm trying to set up an ATT express card (GT3.6 express card) to use with Novatel USB express card adapter for a Macbook. I can get the card to work in the express card slot of my Macbook Pro, but the Macbook (doesn't has an express card slot) is not recognizing the usb adapter. Any suggestions?

It appears that the Novatel Express Card Adapter is meant to be used with the Novetel Express Card. I'm not sure that the AT&T Express Card will work with it.
As an alternative, several of the providers now have a USB Modem that needs no adapter. You might look into those.
