Speech icon is funky in System Pref. window

Hi all! Not sure how or why, but a month ago or so, when I openend up my system preferences, the speech icon looks different. Instead of the little microphone, it shows the light switch, with part of the microphone in the bottom left corner. All the other icons look fine. Any idea why this icon is messed up, and/or what I can do to fix it.
Thanks in advance.
Steve

Quit from System Preferences. Trash ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, i.e. in the Caches folder in the Library of your Home.
While you're at it you might as well trash all (yes, ALL) the items in that 'Caches' folder (make sure you are in the Library of your Home, not the Library you see when you doubke-click on your HD icon). All those caches will be re-created as you use the apps concerned.
What has happened is nothing terrible. Cache files have a tendency to easily become corrupted. You don't need to do any troubleshooting – nothing has gone 'wrong'!
=-=-=-=-
You should get yourself an easy means of doing this – and other – 'housekeeping'/maintenance. I would recommend the excellent (and free) AppleJack. It has the bonus that you can use it to Repair Disk without having to boot from elsewhere. Also, it can be a godsend if ever your Mac won't boot.

  • Why doesn't the QuickTime icon appear in my system prefs, even though I have just installed it and restarted?

I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and bought QuickTime Pro from the Apple store, but discovered I couldn't register it as the QuickTime icon wasn't appearing in System Prefs for me to click on and enter the registration details.
I've reinstalled QuickTime from my original start-up disk - but still nothing.
QuickTime Player 7 loads okay, and while I can access Registration from the main menu, it doesn't actually let me do that but simply encourages me to buy QuickTime Pro... which I have already purchased.
Well I know it's not expensive but it does seem a bit daft to buy it twice!
    Any suggestions, anyone?
    Much appreciated, and thanks!

There is no QuickTime System Preference pane in Snow Leopard or Lion.
Look under the QuickTime Player 7 menu and click Registration. Use copy/paste to enter the Name and Number fields from the info you got from Apple via email.

  • System Prefs window freezing when clicking on Login Items

Can anyone help me with this? In System Prefs>Accounts, I click on the button next to "Password" called "Login Items." It turns gray like I clicked on it, but everything in the window freezes and nothing happens. None of the buttons work except "Login Options." I bring up Force Quit, but the application does not show as "not responding," in other words, it appears to be working fine, but even the red, close window button stops working. The only way to get out of it is to hit command-Q to quit System prefs and then reopen it.

This is annoying, but when you are authenticating with a network ID it adopts settings which restrict access to the login items. If you look in your Accounts control panel, you will see under the name something like Admin, Managed, Mobile/Network (depending on if you made the account mobile). That "managed" word is the problem. If you hold down option when you login you have the option of disabling the management. This will give you full control, but only for that login instance. You can check the save this choice box, but it seems to be useless.
On another note, has anyone figured out how to get around this without having an admin account on the AD domain?

  • Icons - changing Finder, Dashboard, System Prefs, etc. How?

Hi, So I know how to change icons:
Select the icon I want to use, copy it, go to Applications, right click the program icon I want to change, Get Info, Edit, Paste. Voila!
Only, it doesn't work with Finder, Dashboard, or the awful new System Prefs icons.
OK, I think, maybe that's because these Apps are built directly into the OS. Well, if that's why I can't change them then why oh why are there so many alternative sets of lovely Finder, Dashboard, System Prefs icons out there? I mean, what are they for?
    So, help please.
    Leopard 10.5.0, MacBook Pro.

    to change for an application
go into the application by right clicking and show package contents.
open the resources folder. the icon is typically a .icns file. to change it you must replace this file with the new file. make a backup in case you want to change back.
finder/dock is more involved. you can read more about it here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5771616#5771616
but while modifying these icons isn't terribly tricky, one should always be very careful about messing around with the system files. hence the benefit of using something like candy bar.

  • Why can't I check the Notes icon in the iCloud system pref?

After upgrading my iMac on 11/19, I'm trying to get the Notes app to sync with iCloud, as I use my iPads' Notes app extensively at work.  When I open the iCloud system preference, the Notes app is checked at first.  It then becomes unchecked and when I try to re-check the box. system preferences quit unexpectedly.  I've also tried adding a note first on the iMac, and then going into iCloud system preferences, but get the same result.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mike

OK, reading others posts about multiple accounts, I went into the Notes on my iPad, and clicked the Accounts button.  Sure enough, all of my notes on the iPad were under the account Yahoo.  Going into Notes on my iMac, and then going into Accounts under the Notes menu item, I only had iCloud and att.net.  When I chose the att.net account AND checked the Notes box, all of my iPad notes synced with the iMac.
I agree with a previous poster in another message, this is not made clear how to set this up.  I guess I lucked out that all 3 of my iPads are set up identically with regards to Notes, Accounts, and iCloud.
    Hope this helps someone else.

Ok just noticed this last night but in the system prefs window my software update icon has changed and looks very wierd, almost like a lightswitch, infact id say ist like its displaying a different area of the prefs window.. its hard to explain but its not the symbol usually used and the text is cut off so it just says 'software'
whats happened? is there a fix?

    Hi, James.
To solve the corrupted preference pane icon problem:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
    • com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    • com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    3. Empty Trash.
    4. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.Good luck!

  • Deleted column from spaces leaves System Prefs in limbo

HELP! This is my work machine. Someone deleted one of my columns of Spaces, now System Prefs is only visible when Spaces is activated. Example:
System Prefs appears in the Upper left, but not the actual window. I activate Spaces and and the windows shrink back to show my 3 spaces and the System Prefs window is floating above full size, but I can't click on it. Clicking on it only activates the Space that is below where I clicked, as if it were invisible. PLEASE HELP! How can I get my lost apps back?

homedirectory means your home directory, the folder that looks like a house named with your short user name. Inside of that is a folder called Library, inside of that is Preferences. That is where the file is located.
Did you go into the wrong Library?

I just got a brand new macbook pro (13inch) i took out the HD and replaced it with my other macbook HD. Do you think that could be the cause of the problem or have something to do with it?
Yes. Run the install discs that came with the new computer. You may need to do an Archive and Install if the system on the discs is older than the one you have installed.

  • Speech Icon in System Preferences

    Hello,
I have a pretty weird appearence of the `Speech` icon in my System Preferences
window: instead of having the usual microphone icon with Speech written below, I get a square with the symbol of a switch and I can hardly read the `Speech` word written below (it is not centered in the square, lying outside it for the 90%).
Anyone knows how to fix this? Is this possibly connected to other troubles hidden around?

Ok I found the solution by myself. Thanks anyway.

  • Where do I download Spanish and Italian voices for the Speech System Pref?

Where do I download the spanish and italian versions of the voices for the speech system pref? How do I install them?

I mean, if I buy an italian mac, does it come with the italian speech stuff?
No. OS X is the same no matter where it is sold, and it does not contain any non-English voices. You need to get them from the sources you have already been given.

  • Sharing folder icon in system prefs changed to light switch????

I just noticed that the sharing icon in my system prefs is an icon of a light switch and part of the surrounding graphics are cut off - what's happened? Thanks in advance. FE

    Hi,
That's usually caused by a bad System Preferences cache file. Have a look under:
Hard drive > Users > YourUsername > Library > Caches
and delete anything referring to System Preferences. (Sorry, not on a Mac at the moment and can't recall the specific name(s).)
