Speech recognition feedback window won't disappear

There is an article on how to get the speech recognition to appear when it wont. But nothing for when turning off speakable items in preferences doest make that annoying little feedback window go away. Any ideas?
OS Lion 10.7.4

I just deleted the .speech.recognition..plist files, and they were automatically recreated by the system. After a restart I turned off then on the speech recognition and everything worked perfectly!

Repaired perms; and dragged the file named “com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist” to the Trash, emptied the Trash, and turned Speakable Items off and on again, and restarted. No luck.
Whats left to do? Repair disk? Reinstall speech? I always forget....

Fixed. I should have known; it was APE (Application Enchancer) still in a beta version.... sigh....

  • Firefox for Mac: Upload/Attachment window won't disappear

    Howdy -
I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10, and Firefox 32.0.3.
Frequently, but without consistency, the upload file or attachment window will not disappear after I have selected a file.
For example, in Wordpress, I will go to import a file to Media. I will select the file and try to add it. It will be added, but the window from which I made my file selection does not go away. It can't be moved, it can't be interacted with, I can't pull any other window on top of it.
Or in an email, to add an attachment, I will select the file, press OK and the upload window will hang.
This happens regularly, but not with any pattern or consistency. It seems to happen more if I press return to select a file versus clicking the OK button, though that is not a failsafe way of doing it.
Would be thrilled to hear if anyone has a solution or a troubleshoot to this.
Thanks for your help and best regards.

First I would recommend updating to Firefox 33. Second since this happens with javascript I wonder if this is happening for an interaction of hardware acceleration or an add on. To test, please see if the issue occurs less often when you start Firefox in Safe Mode: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]

  • The speech feedback window won't open

I tried turning the speakable items off then on in system preferences and restarting, and also deleting the plist file, neither worked. Thanks for any help.

    Hello!
Did you trash this .plist file? com.apple.speechrecognition.plist ??
It's here: Home/Library/Preferences. Reboot. If that doesn't help, trash this one also: com.apple.universalaccess.plist. Reboot. If that doesn't fix the problem you can trash your com.apple.systempreferences.plist but you will have to reset system preferences system wide. Just do one at a time first before you do the latter.
Also, when you post here could you please indicate exactly which Mac OS you are running? If you aren't sure where to locate this information, click the Apple logo top left in your Desktop, then click About This Mac. A pane will open and tell you which version... thanks!

  • Capture window won't disappear

Whenever I'm capturing something, the capture window moves itself in front of everything else, including other programs. I know that it doesn't have to be like this, but how do you change that setting?

Well, using FCP rescue will trash all my settings - right?< </div>
Of course it will. But not before it makes a copy of your prefs file.
You cannot separate the possible prefs problem from a possible prefs cause without trashing the entire prefs file. There just aren't that THAT many settings that you can't recall them and re-establish them.
You certainly do not need FCP REscue to do this, just make a coyp of your prefs file, call it something unique, move it out of the prefs folder to someplace where you can find it and trash the original.

  • 'visitor survey' window won't disappear and Safari won't respond.

Started a google search on Safari and a window saying "I've been selected for a visitor survey..." popped up with a web address of ____?___ accountzcentral.org. I've quit Safari, shut the computer completely down several times and when I start up again the window is still there. I can't close the Safari window, can't use Google, etc.
What do I do? Help! It's a brand new macBook Pro!

Quit Safari (by force if necessary.) Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. That will stop the page from reloading automatically. Select Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove all website data to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • Can't close Speech Feedback window

I just did an erase and install of 10.4 as per an AppleCare rep, in order to try to track down repeated kernel panics (doesn't seem to have helped).
One side effect: the Speech Feedback window won't close.
    So far, I have:
    - toggled Speakable Items on and off in Speech. It is currently Off, but the round Feedback window is still there
    - deleted all speech-related preferences (com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist, com.apple.speech.recognition.AppleSpeechRecognition.prefs.plist, com.apple.speech.recognition.recognizer.prefs.plist)
    - repaired permissions
    - repaired the disk with Disk Warrior
    No other applications are running.
Nothing. I can't get rid of the darned thing. Any ideas?

    Hi, Scott.
You wrote: "I just did an erase and install of 10.4 as per an AppleCare rep, in order to try to track down repeated kernel panics (doesn't seem to have helped)."I'd say the kernel panics are the more pressing problem, and whatever is causing those may also be causing the Speech Feedback window side effect.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
    Good luck!

  • Speech recognition window problem

My speech recognition window (the little circle thing) disappears once in a while for extended periods of time. I have done all the things suggested in the help including:
    1. going to system preferences and turning speech off and on
    2. restarting and turning off and on / turning off, restarting, and then on
    3. deleting the com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist, emptying trash, and turning off/on, turning off doing the same thing and on, off, deleting, restarting, on, etc.
    4. copying all related speech recognition prefs from another admin's library into mine.
I once thought it may be some overheating issue as it once came back after i had shutdown and let it off for a while. however, the most recent issue, it came back without shutting it off.
sometimes it's gone for hours at a time or shortest 30mins. It usually disappears when i turn it off to let my wife login to her setup or when i turn it off when i know i wont be using it for a while or i am going to play a memory intesive game. my wife's login seems to have no problem but she doesn't use it anywhere as much as i do.
i have set up a few of my own commands but nothing critical. things like CNN, Visualizer, etc.
    any ideas?
for the record, it's back now......

    hi,
i removed all preferences stored in <your home>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.speech.*
and switched speech recognition on/off/on and the window magically appeared -use rm carefully-
make sure that you clean the speech processes (kill -9) too before removing these files.
quite happy to find this, this has been a real p..n in the *. Apple guys, please clean this up asap.
btw: i've an intel mc mini single cpu v10.4.6.

  • Speech Feedback Window Doesn't Appear

In the beginning, speech recognition worked with some commands, but simply didn't respond to most others. Then the speech commands window suddenly emptied itself. I got a temporary fix for that problem, but now I find that the speech feedback window doesn't appear at all.
I tried the advice in the help (switching it off and back on again; rebooting; deleting the com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist) but it has not worked. And the plist file hasn't even recreated itself.
    Please help if you can.

Hi. I followed the advice of another related thread and now I'm convinced it works.
There's a bug in Panther that cripples Speech Recognition when the Address Book is activated to respond to speech commands. (Maybe it's b/c Address Book overloads the SR system?)
Go to System Preferences > Speech > Speech Recognition. "Apple Speakable Items" is the only choice in my Recognition System window; so I didn't choose anything there but the default. Then, go down and make sure that Address Book is UNchecked (not On). I have all the other ones checked (On), such as Global Speakable Items and Application Specific Items, etc., and am not experiencing problems.
Hope this works for you. It seems to have worked for many others. I have no other advice! Best,
    Walter

  • Tiger 10.4.6.!! The speech feedback window simply wont come up!

    Hey,
All of the computer geniuses please help!
I have an ibook G4 that runs on OS X TIger 10.4.6. with 1.5 DDR SDRAM and 60 GB of harddisk.
I am quite new to the whole apple os and recently, I found something called speech on my system preferances.
The first time I tried it, it was great and i even played chess on it,
but when i restarted the computer and tried to use it again, the speed feedback window simply didnt come up.
I tried the toggling the buttons on and off. I even tried after trashing the "com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist" but that made no difference.
Please tell me what to do!

I suspect this is yet another manifestation of the Address Book problem!
    Please try the following:
    0) Open Address Book.
    1) Go through each entry shown as a "company" and ensure that there actually is a company name (make up a dummy one if necessary).
    2) Quit Address Book.
    3) Restart.
    4) Try the Speech Commands again.
Please let us know how you get on…

  • Speech Recognition just won't load in WIN 8.1?

Am new to WIN 8.1 - can't get Speech Recognition to load/run... Will not run either from Control Panel, Charms (search for Speech Recognition, click Windows speech recognition or from icon in Task Bar nor from START screen..  BUT.. will run/load when
rebooted (but often won't work/recognise speech correctly (What was that appears??)) as it then automatically appears on bootup; even though it would not run/load in previous session before the reboot.. !!
Am running HP spectre i5, 4 meg 128GB... This failure is very frustrating - lots of other reports of this occurring but can't find any solutions specific to WIN 8.1.. PLEASE HELP - use dictation  lot as typing is abysmal!!

Hi.. yep, have seen the video thank you.. the problem is NOT knowing how to use it.. (Have been in computers and using speech recognition, mainly Nuance DS Professional for
    ages..)
The problem I have is in LOADING the application… sometimes it will load on the click of the mouse (or touch of the screen on this HP SPECTRE) – be it loaded from the task
bar icon that I set up, from the Windows Speech Recognition command vis the CHARMS or even from the START tiles.. other times it will not!!  Must frustrating (will have to buy a new Nuance DNS professional as windows 8.1 is not a platform for DNS Version
10 that I have used for ages – needs !!  or maybe go back to WIN&7??)
Couple of things I have noticed that may help others is that the programme may not load if one clicks the icon too quickly.. I find that hovering the mouse over the icon and
waiting until “Windows speech recognition” appears, THEN clicking the icon works at times.. after the small win Speech Recognition mode (grey) icon is closed by pressing the red “close” button then it is hard to get the programme to load again.. then one must
go to Task manager and stop the Speech Recognition programme by clicking on the end task button..
So.. it’s the initial loading and running of the programme that concerns me..  perhaps the bods at MS could look at how memory is allocated to this programme and why when
closing the Speech Recognition programme from the “grey” speech recognition mode button it is  subsequently “hard” to reload it again and the programme seemingly seems to still run in Task Manager after this close button has been pressed…??  (But,
    I won’t hold my breath)…
    Cheers

  • Speech Recognition Not Working. Why?

I have a 6-month old Macbook (OSX 10.5.5), and I want to try out the built in speech recognition software. For some reason, it won't accept any input, no matter the configuration I put it in. When I click calibrate, it's slow to open, and no matter what I do with the slider, it won't recognize my commands. I've tried it in a new account, but without success. It appears to be system-wide. Also, there are no items in the speakable items folder, and a feedback box does not appear on the desktop. Any ideas?

Im assuming you've used the Sound pane to check that the built-in mic is working, and that you've remembered to click on the "Speakable Items" radio button.
There are a couple of fixes that normally work when changing user helps, but it is possible that two user accounts have the same problems!
    1)
Have you got any items in Address Book that are marked as "Company" but have no company name in them? This is an old problem that was supposed to have been fixed with Leopard, but I've heard people complaining about it occasionally since. If there are, try going through them and putting in the company names, then log out and back in again.
    2)
    Try deleting the preference files
    com.apple.speech.recognition.recognizer.prefs.plist
    com.apple.speech.recognition.AppleSpeechRecognition.prefs.plist
    com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist
    all in ~/Library/Preferences/
Failing those, and the missing Speakable Items suggests that's not the fault, try downloading and reapplying the latest Combo updater.
If that doesn't do the trick, you may have to reinstall the OS.
    Sorry!

    Hi,
You can try to add new words to open bat file in Speech dictionary:
Say "start listening," or tap or click the microphone button to start the listening mode.
Say "open Speech Dictionary" and do any of the following:
-To add a word to the dictionary, say "Add a new word," and then follow the instructions.

  • Windows Speech Recognition Macros - Wait for Second Command

Hello all. 'm terribly sorry if this was posted in the wrong forum. Let me know where to put it and I'll move it accordingly.
I'm working with Windows Speech Recognition Macros, and I've got a question. Is there ANY way to write a macro that is triggered when the user says something (<listenFor></listenFor>), has the computer say something back to the user (<speak></speak>)
and then waits a number of seconds for a specific command from the user? An example of what I'm saying would be something like....
    (I named my computer Aurora)
    ME: Aurora, close all windows.
AURORA: Command received. Confirming close all windows.
    *WAIT*
    ME: Confirm.
AURORA: Command confirmed. Closing all windows.
or something along those lines to create some sort of dialogue between the computer and I. Is this acheiveable through the use of Speech Recognition Macros, or would I need to design a program that integrates Windows Speech Recognition to do this (if so,
point me in the right direction)? Or worse, am I asking too much from a simple Speech Recognition program?

If you are asking if you can add wait commands to WSRMacros I do not see why you need a separate program. The Toolkit developed for WSR allows easy creation of WSRMacros and nesting of multiple macros using the Pause Execution command which inserts
your choice of the length of the Wait state.
For writing your own Wait state command, see the MSDN article on the Wait state command. I tried inserting the link but it won't activate because my account has not yet been approved.
