Speech transcription, metadata, and a massive amount of footage (CS5)

I've been charged with developing a workflow and working environment that will capture, process, preserve and output the content of over 450 BetaSP tapes. The footage was and continues to be shot for a national documentary project that is still rolling along. Since much of the footage is truly irreplaceable (e.g. interviews with persons no longer living), and since it documents a movement of great importance, trying to save this content while simultaneously making it useable is now mission critical.
I'm still trying to decide if Premiere Pro et al. is appropriate for this project, but the one part that is most intriguing to me is our good old friend from CS4: Speech-to-Text transcription. Actually, I'm using this as one of the major selling points to the producer, so I'm hoping that what I want to do can work. Yes, we know that the transcription in CS4 was abyssmal, at best, but I'm optimistic that it's been improved in CS5. It appears that Adobe added the ability to use a reference script when doing the speech analysis and transcription; this is fortunate, as most, if not all of these interviews (over 125 of them, to date) have some sort of text document transcription.
What I want to be able to do is capture the tapes wholesale, perform the speech transcription with the reference transcripts, and then winnow the long clips down to chunks of useable material. From there, these will be used to generate the documentary and other programming, develop DVDs of un-cut interviews (with subtitles), and eventually create an online, keyword-searchable library of the material. Yes, lots to do...
I've looked at a few of the brief tutorials and videos for this feature, and they always seem to focus on narrative filmmaking, which is enough different from what I'm trying to do that I can't be sold on whiz-bang videos alone. Granted, I would never trust this to work with CS4, but CS5 looks a bit more hopeful.
Has anyone played with this feature or employed a similar workflow long enough to comment on the feasability of such a project with CS5? By the way, I'm probably going to be posting over in the hardware forum about building a couple of workstations and external media storage system for this project, so if you're interested, check over there. Frankly, I'm not too optimistic about PPro being reliable enough to handle what I'm attempting, and am seriously considering ditching it for Avid, but if I can leverage the speech transcripts and metadata, I could be convinced to put my faith in PPro.
Your thoughts are welcome...

Speech to text sucess is highly dependant on the source.  So it may be almost perfect for some, terrible for others.   It is generally improved in CS5.  The big improvement which can make it almost 100% accurate is a matching script to compare to.  But if you dont have scripts, that doesnt help you.
This is true. For the most part, the interviews are always in quiet, controlled settings, using professional equipment, so the audio is clean. Whether the person speaks clearly is sometimes another matter Since I have transcripts for everything (or most everything), constituting thousands of pages, the script matching sounds phenomenal, in theory. I guess my biggest fear was how Premiere actually copes with the added metadata; I actually had fairly good results in many instances using speech transcription in CS4, but for some reason, those transcribed clips would then cause PPro to get all wobbly and weird. Given that I'm likely going to be working with uncompressed 8-bit media (this is for long-term archival and retrieval), I don't want any unnecessary flakiness.
Another new feature in CS5 is the text (which as you know is connected temporaly as meta data) is now transfered and usable if you output to Web in Encore.   Meaning the speech to text transcription becomes web searchable by simple encoding to "web dvd" in encore.
This is a fascinating aspect for me, and the brief overviews I've seen look extraordinarily interesting. A big part of this project is democratizing this content and making it accessible to professional media outlets, but also to educational institutions and to the general public. Ideally, this project will be creating a "YouTube" for content that is significantly more important than what you usually find there Having it keyword searchable as well as being accessible to the hearing impaired is a major part of our goal. If I can get at that metadata and speech transcription down the line, all the better.
If this works, I'll later be deploying this on another documentary project, though a slightly larger one; at last count, the tape library falls somewhere around 800 pieces!
Thanks for the reply, Curt.

  • Adobe Clip Notes picking up random words and timecode markers from speech transcription metadata

    I've been experimenting with the speech transcription feature in Premiere CS4 - sometimes my results are good, sometimes not. Regardless, after I'm finished editing my project and export it via Adobe Clip Notes for client review, the clip notes file has hundreds of random words from the speech transcription already time stamped in the PDF. The only way to remove them seems to be going through the PDF document and deleting them one by one. There are no markers visible in the Premiere timeline or anywhere else before I export the file. I would go back and delete the entire transcription from the metadata panel in Premiere, but there doesn't seem to be any way to do a bulk delete.
    Anyone else run into this problem?
    Thanks!
    Ed
    P.S. I'm all up to date as far as software is concerned.

    I have a very similar issue,,, analysis text field is always empty
    I tried with avi files, with mp3... same result...
    I am using c5.5 but also tried a trial CC with the same outcome.
    very strange

  • Firefox exe continues to run after closing all windows, and consumes massive amounts of cpu

    after closing all firefox windows and trying to reopen i get the "firefox is still running but unresponsive" message, and have to go into task manager, processes and end the firefox exe, which is consuming between 96 and 100 cpu.

    Norton IPS is apparently a known issue being mentioned in the KB articles:
    *[[firefox will not start]]
    * [[firefox crashes when you open it]]
    * I also found an earlier post on the Norton site http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-IPS-1-0-Addon-for-FireFox/m-p/25425#M8494 but I am not sure this is still considered a problem.
    What exactly is this IPS extension. I am currently using XPs with Norton's NIS (version 18.6 - it is a paid for subscription). I do have Intrusion Prevention active in NIS but I see no specific extension or program IPS. Is this some optional additional software?
    I did find an explanation but from 2009
    * http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Protection-Blog/Intrusion-Prevention-System-IPS-Your-first-line-of-defense/ba-p/124400
    I am NOT using the Norton Toolbar etc. is it these components that are causing the problem i.e safe search etc.
    I am not having problems with firefox hanging or continuing, despite using NIS.
    There is a bug on this https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=548945 but that does not seem to have got very far in confirming or resolving the issue. I imagine Norton have a very large userbase and it seems unlikely that the basic NIS is itself incompatible with Firefox.

  • Prelude massive lag slow down with many markers (Speech Transcription)

    Hey I noticed when there's many markers (hundreds) (like after speech transcription) visible in the timeline of Prelude, play back grinds to halt. When I show only subclips or comments, performances comes right back up.
    I'm assuming this isn't meant to happen. Any fix for this?
    Thanks!

  • Speech transcription in other languages.. not english

    hello,
    in my speech transcription options.. is enabled only in English but in no other language .. as Spanish, which is what I need. The video interview is in Spanish. I tried reinstalling the program .. but does not work .. what may be happening? option works only in English .. all others are grayed out .. disabled. help please!

    Since it does not even work in English, I would not worry about the lack of other languages. It probably was a very, very bad effort from a former Dragon employee to get it included in CS4. I just hope they leave it out in CS5, because it only bloats the software without any benefit at all.
    Its far from perfect, and I have no use for it myself.  BUt there are are users who like this feature and even in its imperfect state saves them time in their workflow.  Imagine doing a docu with 90 minutes of talking heads and three camera angles.  Searching for a word or phrase by scrubbing would take a long time.  Searching by text is almost instantaneous.  The transcription isnt perfect but it often is close enough to be helpful in this workflow.
    Useless for many perhaps; but useful for some.

    The guy at the Genius Bar has told you absolute and utter rubbish.  It is true that Apple has stopped supporting iWeb, but it definitely DOES NOT mean that your website will stop working any time soon.
    They should know that iWeb is an application on your Mac and as long as it is compatible with your OS - it works in Snow Leopard and Lion and will be compatible with the new Mountain Lion out this Summer, then you can still use it to build and maintain websites.
    As long as your are not publishing your site to MobileMe, then you are okay - if you are publishing to a local folder and then uploading to another host that is fine and your site will not be going anywhere in a hurry.
    You don't need to change software unless you really want to.

  • How to delete massive amounts of email on iPhone

    Hi. I have over 1500 emails in an earthlink.net email account on an iPhone running iOS 8.1 and want to mass-delete all but the last 3 months — say 120 emails. Is there a way to do this other than one-by-one manually?

    But I need to keep them on my computer. Or, are you saying that, once they've been downloaded to the Powerbook G4 and iPhone 4, if I delete them on webmail, they'll disappear from my iPhone?
    I think my experience has been that, if I delete my road runner webmail emails, it has no effect on e mail already downloaded to my MPB or iPhone 5s.
    I read a nifty-sounding 'trick' for deleting piles of email on an iPhone, but the tipper said not to try it on massive amounts or it would freeze up the iPhone. You check the top email (which activates the 'Move' button so it becomes clickable). Then holding the Move button, unclick the top email and wait, holding down 'Move' (while, seemingly, nothing's happening). Once all the email has been moved, you are presented with a screen with the option to move the moved mail to trash. I'll attach a screenshot of that screen, showing what happened just now to all the (16) emails presently on this iPhone 5s...

  • Massive amounts of email missing

    I keep basically all of my email, and I've recently noticed that there are entire years of email missing from the folder I created to archive my email. The biggest is a gap of three years where there is no email at all from that time period. What has happened to it? I have tried rebuilding the folder, no luck, then I tried breaking it up into smaller folders then rebuilding the original folder, no luck. Recent mail is missing also. Spotlight does not find it. Can anyone help?

  • How to delete massive amount of duplicate songs in itunes library

    how do i EASILY delete a massive amount of duplicated dongs in my iTunes library

    Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
    Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
    Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
    (If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
    The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Only receiving massive amounts of spam

    Help! My email is suddenly only receiving massive amounts of 'mail delivery failure' notices.
    I have run SOPHOS scan but nothing comes up. Unfortunately, I probably won't receive a reply.
    But if you have a solution, please try to send.
    Thanks

    Mac Mail, via who?   I think you should talk to your provider.  Your address could have been hacked and as Wzzz suggests you should check the strength of your password.
    But your provider should be able to confirm if there is any suspicious activity or if it is just a case of the settings.

  • Simple Bridge script will not read metadata and triggers Adobe Stock Photos

    I have been trying to learn to write scripts for bridge but can't get past the most basic tasks. When I run the script on an open window in bridge it throws an "Uncaught exception metadata" error. The most bizarre thing is it sometimes causes an Adobe Stock Photo script to launch in the extendscript toolkit and throw and the "Uncaught exception metadata" error in that script. My script is as follows:
    #target "bridge"
    if (BridgeTalk.appName == "bridge")
    var items = app.document.visibleThumbnails
    for (i=0; i< items.length; i++)
    item = items[i]
    md=item.metadata
    md.namespace = "http://ns.adobe.com/photoshop/1.0/";
    Window.alert(md.Title)
    Window.alert(i + " "+ " Files Finished")
    Basically I was asking to extract the title of each thumbnail from the metadata and show it in a window. I figured if I could do something as basic as that then I could move on and tackle the more complicated tasks that I need to do.
    Any ideas of what is going on? Has anyone else accidentally triggered Adobe Stock Photos?

    Another bit of info....   As I looked at this further, it seems to be occuring only on those photos where I previously ran camera raw from CS3. I've upgraded to CS5 but have not rerun camera raw since. I understand the camera raw engine in CS3 was different. Could this be involved? Could Lightroom be changing the metadata because the engine is updating the information and I have to save TO file to get this to synch?
    update about this camera raw engine possibilty..... it would not appear to be the answer. I have some files that synch even tho lightroom develop says they are using the 2003 process version. I have some files that are on the new version that won't synch.

  • Calculation and posting of discount on Payment and on net amount

    Hello,
              My client would like to configure posting of discount on payment. The discount should be calculated on the net amount and should also adjust the VAT input tax amount.  Example:
    PO: 100 EUR, VAT 10 EUR, Gross amt = 110 EUR, Invoice recieved: 110 (-110 on vendor,100 is posted on GR/IR and 10 on input tax). When payment is done, discount amounts to 2.2 EUR ( 110 is posted on vendor account, -107.8 on bank account, -2 on discount account, -0.2 in input tax).
    Have anyone of you ever did this on SAP. Can you pleas explain me the steps if yes? Thank you for your help.

    Hi,
       I have already did a test with base discount on net amount and base vat on net amount check. When those are check, during good receipt the purchase account is debit with the net amount (gross -discount) and during invoice  the difference is then transferred to the purchase account. The tax is calculated on the net amount. This is not what we are looking for. For us we want to know if it is possible that during good receipt and invoice received everything is calculated without taking into consideration the discount received. It is only when we are doing the payment of the invoice that discount is calculated and the VAT amount is adjusted for with the discount received. Thank you for your help.

  • New Mac Pro - Aperture and a massive new project - help me be smart!

    I am receiving a Mac Pro 2.66 Friday and adding in 4 GB RAM and 2 500GB HDS, Aperture and Final Cut Studio and a lot of music software. Moving up from a G4 450 DP.
    I received a very nice fellowship and will officially begin the project on June 1, continuing until August, 2008. I will be filming in all 92 Indiana counties - mainly nature and historic sites for a few DVD programs for schools in my county. I expect to end up with 30,000 + images when it is all said and done.
    Before I begin, do any of you experienced digital photographers have any advice for someone in my position? You know, "what I wish I had known when I started using Aperture" kind of advice.
    I use a Nikon D70, 5 various lenses and will shoot RAW. I am an experienced photographer, so I am not looking for shooting tips, etc.
    Thanks for any tips.
    G4 450DP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    That sounds like a great project.
    People have already emphasized the importance of backing up. I can't pile on with any more emphasis. Backup, backup, and backup some more. I have five copies of every RAW file I've ever made across four different disks and DVD's. The DVD's are located in a remote location. I had an issue with my hard drives about three months ago that caused all my hard drives to loose their data--complete loss. If not for my DVD's, I would've lost 30,000 RAW files let alone all the processed images.
    I'm working an article on my backup strategy that should be published in the next week or so. If you want, send me an e-mail and I'll give you a link to my site when it's done.
    This next article is about file naming. I've been using this same convention for 8 years. It works as well as anything. The other recommendations are also excellent especially the ones about adjusting your convention when sending to clients.

    This final article is about my initial workflow. I am not a "copy the CF card prior to import" kind of guy. Call me gutsy. Metadata and keywords will be your most important friend during a project this size. Being able to quickly get to images for various purposes will be extremely important. To be a high end, high capacity photographer also means being a data manager. It's a fact of life. Secondly, start early and don't get behind keywording. That will only slow you down later. The key to this in Aperture is using the keyboard shortcuts. Learn those. It'll help lost later.

  • I want a stamp to write to the file metadata and be able to display the result in windows explorer.

    I want a stamp to write to the file metadata and be able to display the result in windows explorer. I have read PDF Stamp Secrets and can write to Custom Metadata but don't know how to display that custom field in explorer. Can I have the stamp write to a standard (non-custom) metadata field? Or, how do it get the custom field to display in explorer? Windows is pretty stingy with the file details it displays for PDF files, in fact there are no editable fields provided (like are available for Office files).   I want this to work for multiple users hopefully without having to get the IT group involved to make (or allow) system modifications to make this work. Any ideas? Thank you.

    Metadata for Windows Explorer is tagged with different names than the metadata for PDFs. Acrobat cannot copy the metadata to the tagged items of the file header.
    There are tools like EXIFTool that can manipulate the data as necessary. Phil Harvey also provides the details about the file types and their metadata tags and values so you should be able to map the tags that need to be updated.

  • Muse image metadata and global caption styling

    When will Muse be able to import image metadata and perform global caption styling with accurate positioning for lightboxes and slideshows?

    I've done some testing.
    if images are uploaded to the Facebook Wall, the Comments field that Aperture presents before uploading the image becomes the Description field on Facebook.
    however, if the images are uploaded to a known Facebook Album, the Version Name becomes the Description.
    both of these situations are not logical. in the case of uploading to the Wall, 'Comments' should probably be 'Description'. I'll report them to Apple's bugreport.
    images seem to be scaled down to fit within 2048x2048 pixels.
