Speed and burn problems

I've been experiencing difficulties burning a dvd project today in iDVD4.
The project is about 110 mins. I have never burned over 90 minutes before. All video files are on external drives, as with all DVD projects I have successfully burned over the years.
I usually set up the DVD on another machine on iDVD3, then import and update to the machine with iDVD4. Again this is a tried and tested route. I do this because I like the fact that iDVD3 will encode before you click burn so you can generally burn more successfully more quickly. I then use the easter egg to burn a disk image and burn my disks via disk utility.
This time however iDVD seems to have slowed down massively on my second machine. It takes minutes to shuttle between scene selection screens [these are chapters made in and imported from FCP 4.5]. Again never had this problem in the past.
I repaired disk permissions, made no difference. Tried to burn disk image, computer froze at a different point every time. Is going over 90 minutes a real no-no?

Is going over 90 minutes a real no-no?
It is feasible with best quality but there is a degradation of quality over 70 minutes or so and will undoubtedly take longer and require more free disc space.

What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

The slower the speed, the fewer burn errors (or, in other words, you'll burn fewer "coasters"). I've always tried to burn at a slower speed, i.e. 2x - 4x. I'd rather wait a few minutes more and I've never had any burn errors.

  • Fans run full speed on stand-by and burner problem iMac 24-inch early 2009

In standby sometimes the fans are running at full speed. Also with burning some CD or DVD's the burner makes an awful grunting sound.
For a 2 year old Mac I did not expect to have these kind of problems!
Resetting the iMac does not help. Might this be a Lion problem?
Optical Drive is running at 4800rpm, normal 798rpm
Hard Drive at 5903rpm, normal 1599rpm
    CPU at 3598rpm normal, 1200rpm
The burning problem only happens sometimes, not with all.

What did you do to reset the imac? Problems like these are "sometimes" solved with an SMC reset.

  • Touchpad Speed and Finder problem

Alright, I'm using a Penyrn baseline Macbook Pro that I picked up when it first came out. I'm loving it. It's great. So far, I've had a few big problems with it though.
    1) When I've been playing some graphic intensive games, like World of Warcraft, my Finder and dockbar freezes. Like, nothing would work, I couldn't alt-tab and while my game would work, I'd have to reset the entire computer.
    2) Again, while playing World of Warcraft, sometimes my Touchpad speed would get reset down to a slower setting. When I try and change it, it won't stay and often whenever I alt-tab between programs, it'll go back to the slower setting.
    3) Is there any place, Apple Store and what not that I could get it in for a check up? There's a few smaller things I feel IN the keyboard that's a bit defective and pixel problems.
    thanks!

  • Broadband Speed and Connection Problem

Since the 03/03/11 I have has problems with the speed and stability of my broadband connection.
The IP profile of my connection has now become significantly smaller than my downstream, suggesting that my line had become unstable.
I have checked the internal wiring, the micro-filters and the router, and changing any combination of these does not re-stabilise the line nor offers any speed improvements.
The downstream listed below has gone down over the last couple of days, once again suggesting a line fault somewhere.
I have contacted BT support about this issue via email.
If anyone else has any ideas of what I could try to help sort this out, I would be very thankful
Hopefully I have provided enough information below to allow any sort of diagnosis to be made, but I'm placing my bets on a line fault caused by the bad weather lately.
Speed test (via speedtest.net) gives the following values: (Download: 14.2 kB/s) (Upload: 35.8 kB/s) (Ping: 492ms)

    Hi
    results from the BTlineTest
Download speedachieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :3584 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
No idea why it says "135 kbps" as im obviously getting nothing near that.
One example is "counter-strike" online multiplayer game, when i load it, my Latency is at a normal 40-50.. then it shoots up to 5-600, making it unplayable.
Maybe its the exchange i dunno, might just sort it-self out in the next couple days, but its been 3 days now so im a bit concerned.

  • MSI NX7600GT-T2D256EZ speed and temp problems?

Hi, I'd like to buy a MSI NX7600GT-T2D256EZ but after reading this comparison in Madshrimps i'm confused:
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=12&artpage=1958&articID=460
At the time of this comparison, there was a problem with speed and temperature as you can read in the article. I'd like to know if this problem has been already solved, because i didn't found any new info following this article.
Could someone help me? I really like this card since there is no fan, but wouldn't like to find problems.
    Thanks a lot.

Well the Link works but the described issue would only happen if gpu is overheating (as Aaron said). This is automatic core slow down and happens with any GeForce FX/6/7/8 vga when reaching the critical temp. Of course a passive cooled vga reaches higher temps than a vga of the same kind with active cooling. So good airflow inside the case is crucial to keep the temps down. With just an ordinary airflow (two casefans) the 7600GT-EZ never reaches critical temp.
The article you linked to also describes that the NX7600GT-T2D256EZ wrongly reports too high temps. This issue is unknown, I build a system with this vga sometime ago and it never reported wrong temps.

  • Cisco 837 speed and duplex problem

I have one Cisco 837 connected to Cisco 1900 and Cisco 2924XL. When i set the speed and duplex to 10 full duplex or 100 full duplex i 837 the fastethernet interface is going down. Its working if i set speed and duplex to auto i 837 router. I have 12.4(4)T release on my Cisco 837.

    Hi
AFAIK 1900 doesnt support auto negotiation so better manually hardcode the speed and duplex to 10/half or 10/full on the port which is connecting to 1900 and
100/full to the port which is connecting to 2924 coz it does support 100/full.

  • Airport Security, Speed and WDS Problems

I've been reading the posts here about the new AirPort "n". I also posted my own thread about the curious speed issues I've observed. BTW, my computers are all "" capable. An off-the-cuff summary (please correct me if I'm wrong):
    1. WDS in any practical form is hit or miss. Creating extended networks appears to be a basic non-starter, though AirTunes seems to work in many cases. Manual vs Assistant setup sometimes helps, but as an experienced user, I find this all a bit vexing.
    2. Enabling any kind of security has a predictable and detrimental impact on speed. Personally, I've seen WEP security grind formerly 5.7MB download speeds to less than 500, WPA routinely takes 5.5MB to less than 2MB, and turning off security but implementing Timed Access slows my network to less than 80kb download speed.
    3. Turning off security entirely seems in my case to allow the AirPort to function more or less properly. Of course, no security is unacceptable.
    4. There is a resignation to the idea that a future firmware update will fix what are fundamental problems with a perhaps too-early-released product.
I've been pretty methodical about my observations and tweaks -- resetting the unit to factory, sing the interface setup automation as needed, re-powering between changes. I've read about others ganging multiple AirPorts with success. While the new AirPort is not quite a doorstop, it appears to be not-ready-for-prime-time. Or maybe mine is just a lemon.
In my case, I've rectivated my previous-generation Extreme complete with security, AirTunes, network extension, etc (even used the new Utility to do all the setup). My speeds are happily back at 5.7MB down.
    Thoughts?

I appreciate the response. I'd usually agree that "operator error" is at the root. After over 20 years of using Apple products, this is the first that has me scratching my head. But I'm not new to this -- I built one of the first and largest Xsan installs in the U.S. I'm an early adopter, and most always an early success story.
As I said earlier, I've worked the scenarios very methodically. It could very well be that this is a hardware issue with this particular unit, or a higher percentage of units is failing than the norm. That would not be new - early new hardware in some Apple product line have experienced teething problems. Not a long term worry, though.
My next step is replacing the hardware, carefully observing serial numbers, etc.
The question, btw, is implicit -- is there something altogether simple that escapes me and a number of reasonable users that is causing a problem?

  • VIA KM4M-V motherboard CPU speed and AGP problem

Hello. Please be patient I am not technical I would say I'm intermediate, so please if anyone is kind enough to help, please don't blind me with jargon! I have 2 problems I believe are motherboard related, I shall go thru them both. Any solutions/suggestions will be very gratefully received! Operating system is Win XP Pro SP 2 running 512 MB RAM (64 used at moment for onboard graphics)
I purchased this mother board: VIA KM4M-V. I also purchased an AMD Sempron PR2600+ which should be showing a speed of 1833 Mhz, but is coming up as 1466 MHz. Does anybody have any info please? I have downloaded and installed all the latest deivers and BIOS for the motherboard, and the MSI live monitor says there are no new updates now. Is there something in BIOS I need to change? Or is this a mistake on the manufactuers part? If so, which one? LOL
2nd problem: The onboards graphics weren't good enough for some games I had - it required an AGP card. So I have purchased an ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB AGP card. OK I installed this card. All OK starting up. installed drivers, restarted computer. Was OK then changed to 32 bit colour and change the resolution of screen. When I clicked apply went into energy saving mode. Rebooted. As soon as it went to boot into windows, the monitor went into energy saving mode. Once it didn't straight away and windows started then the screen went distorted then it went into energy saving mode. I went into safe mode uninstalled the graphics hardware booted into windows again and reinstalled looked OK then I rebooted and it did it again grrrrrrrrr I went and disabled onboard graphics (ATI said might be issue on their site) still won't boot. Something I am doing wrong? Is it the motherboard?
I'm thinking that it is both botherboard ::koff:: I mean motherboard It's OK I mean it's better than what I had, but I know it's not what it should be! I am grateful to you guys for your help. Thanks very much

More on this! I am running win xp pro sp 2 BTW. I have been swapping between the onboard graphics and the ATI radeon 9550 AGP card I just got. I have been disabling onboard graphics, then installing from scratch (all virus and programs off). As to power supply/amperes? I have no idea all I know is it's a 450 watt rating and has ummmm 230 on back (volts?) it's pretty new I got it like 5 months ago
OK I can get it sort of working when I go into the BIOS and set it from 8x to 4x. The graphics advanced setting was showing 4x. The motherboard is SUPPOSED to support 8x but it just won't work at all in that mode. It works for awhile in 4x mode. No specific amount of time I have current drivers on everything! Then the same old thing happens! Monitor goes to energy saving mode or computer restarts. On restart can use it again for a limited time again, and then the mouse pointer kinda goes funny and it freezes. It goes pixalated and if I move it this 'block' goes up and down in a line only. Most of the time has been trying to start AOL (my ISP)  it goes off then. Have tried different rates (went down to 16 bit) and desktop sizes (went down to the one above 800x600) no go. I took the refresh rates to 60, tried everything. I have taken it out again.
I don't know if it a motherboard problem, the graphics card or a combo! I just paid £54.99 for the graphics card, and don't want to waste it! What should I do. It's really frustrating!

  • Speed and printing problems with Tiger

Perhaps it is the number of photos i have stored in Iphoto (4000)? but my computer has become very very slow, especially when iphoto is open. Also, Internet explorer is unresponsive, and i find myself often having to use force quit. Are these problems unique to tiger or are they because i have so much saved on my hard drive?

    Jeffrey,
It appears that you may have several issues occuring and it would help if you included as much info about your Mac as possible, i.e., which iMac, ram, hard drive capacity, amount used, processor speed, etc....

  • Partitioning- and burning problems

    Hey, all!
I've had my iMac 27' (intel-based i7, 8GB RAM) for some time now, and I recently decided to update it to OS X Lion 10.7, and with it - of course, Boot Camp (4.0).
I don't know why, but I suddenly really want to boot camp the living **** out of my Mac and give it a Window-partition so that I can play some games!
First of all, I can't find any installation CD, and honestly, I don't recall getting any when I got my iMac. Should I have gotten any?
Anyways, I heard you could download the support drivers now and that you didnt need the CD anymore, so I figured, why not. And I started Boot Camp up, choose "download" and it starts downloading. Actually, takes several minutes before its done, and when its done, I get two options: I can get all the stuff on a flash drive or I can burn it to a CD or a DVD. So I choose the last mentioned option, I insert a DVD-RW with 4.7GB, and I click Burn. It processes for a while, and then suddenly I get an error message saying something like:
Burning failed, the disc may not be burnt. It may not bee compatible with the optic station. Try again with another disk or try to lower the speed of the burning process.
(This is not the exact error-message, as I got it in Norwegian and I didn't get a print-screen of it)
So I try to lower the speed, but OF COURSE, the area where I can change the speed is marked in grey so I can't touch it. At all. Tried another disk, of the same brand, but still, didnt work.
So, I figured I could try the other option I had all back in the beginning of Boot Camp. So I choose the other option, not the download support files-thingy, but the other one. I get to the partitioning-part, I divide and slide the bars until Im satisfied, and then - pow - guess what happens when I try to execute?
The disk may not be partitioned because there are some files that cannot be moved.
Then they tell me to make a safety copy of the drive, format it to one single volume with the format "Mac OS Extended" with the help of Disk Utility.
At this time, I am too confused, too tired, too angry and too... I don't know.
    Thanks,
    Tobias

    1. You iMac should have indeed a set of 2 DVDs come with it. One ist the OSX Snow Leopard Install DVD and the second is the OSX Applications DVD.
If you still have the packaging do a thorough search for them.
If you don't find them you can call Apple and ask for replacement for a relatively small fee.
Have the serial-number of your iMac at hand when calling.
    2. I never used a DVD to burn the downloaded Support Software but rather an ordinary USB-Stick (using MBR as partition scheme and MS-DOS (FAT32) as file system).
    A 1GB Stick is sufficient.
    3. The BootCamp Asistant (BCA) needs a free contigeous diskspace on you hardisk to make the BootCamp partition.
OSX on the other hand tries to keep files in 'one-part' on the harddisk which after some time of usage leads to files being scattered all over your harddisk.
Therefor the BCA can not find the free contigeous space it needs.
The easiest way is to use a cloning app like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internsl OSX to an external harddisk.
Then repartition the internal HD with Disk Utility while booted from the external HD and then clone the OSX back to the internal.
This usually puts the once scattered files back in order at gives the needed free contigeous diskspace for the BCA to work.
    http://s3.amazonaws.com/com.shirtpocket/SuperDuper/Fragmentation.pdf
There are other apps like iPartition or Drive Genius for defragmenting but I am not sure how good they work with OSX Lion.

  • Edit export and burn problems

    I have a macbook pro 2.3 ghz, corei7, 8gb,1600mhz ddr3.
I have a 1hr 13 min hd movie on imovie and I want to burn it to disc but it is to large, how can I make it smaller and still keep the quality.
This computor did not come with idvd and thw mov file is difficult to us on other burn programs.

I'll see if I can work that out. The complication being that I'm at a school. I don't have access to a physical copy of the software, so I'll have to see if someone is still letting people download 1.2.
My home system, which is Vista 64bit, handles things flawlessly the normal way. My class of computers here are XP 64bit,a and none of them "took".
    Thanks for the advice,

  • Slow data speeds and AirTunes problems???

    This is a bit weird.
Lately I've noticed that my wi-fi speeds feel very slow. Downloading files, software updates, etc., are very slow. When I plug in via an ethernet cable, everything is nice and fast.
But here is what is also happening - I have numerous Airport Expresses around my house that are only used for music (some have wireless turned off and are connected via a cable and some have wifi turned on, but only for receiving music - none act as a wifi access point). I only have one wifi access point, and that is my Airport Extreme. All of a sudden, I can't stream music, via iTunes, from a computer connected via wifi to a computer on the wired network. But, if the computer is on wifi and the Airport Express is also on wifi, streaming works fine. Vice-versa also doesn't work (i.e. if the computer is on the wired network it cannot stream iTunes to a wifi Airport Express but it can stream to wired Expresses).
Something is very weird, and I think it has to do with the Airport Express not functioning properly. But, I have all the latest firmware updates on it and I'm getting a green light in the utility.
    Weird - I know.
    Any ideas???

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing your AirPorts from providing a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Disk Utility and burning problems

I'm in the process of trying to back up my new emac (OS 10.4.2). I bought some CDRW disks (4X, 700mb) and I can quick erase them--but I cannot burn to them. I have all the proper authorizations (as I am the administrator) and my computer does burn this type of disk. The burn icon is dimmed when I highlight the CD disk in "disk utility". It also doesn't show up on my harddrive. It is listed as read only. I've tried two.
Is there an authorization I'm missing? Something else?
(This has not been an easy switch, since I can't seem to get my old iMac to talk to the new eMac either. That is next on my list)
    Christina

    Christina Wilson,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Have you tried erasing the CD-RW disks before trying to use them? Insert the disk, open Disk Utility, select the CD-RW device, not the volume name (the device name is the one on top of the volume name), select the Erase tab, and see if the Erase button becomes active. After erasing, you may need to quit Disk Utility before the CD-RW blank will mount on the desktop (that's the case in 10.2.8; it may not hold for 10.4.2).
Have you tried running Disk Utility/ Repair Permissions on you new Mac yet? What about the maintenance scripts? A handy reference for this sort of OS X stuff is Dr. Smoke's The X Lab: The X-FAQs
There are a couple of current threads in the eMac networking forum on connecting to other Macs (including iMacs) using Setup Migration Assitiant to trnsfer files; you can also check out Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ

  • Anyone having speed and bootup problems with their iq506 touchsmart?

After buying and loading recovery disks, I am still experiencing slow, slower than normal, response times from my hp touchsmart iq506 pc. It has always been somewhat slow and there are always too many programs running. Even after disabling many programs the iq506 is still slow. I am running vista and wonder would I get better performance with windows7. If someone has figured this out, PLEASE let me know.

I know you said you had tried changing channels but try downloading inssider2 and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. Then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.
it may help or at least confirm the strength of your wifi signal
