Speed availability at my location

Hoping someone can give some insight on how to fix this problem.
I currently live less than 2500 feet from the central office and my availability is provisioned at up to 3.0 mbps. When the technician came out to my home to connect the wires, he said he was able to get 10 mbps on my line. As a side note, I used to be located over 9000 feet from this same central office and was receiving 7.0 mbps. I've contacted sales/tech support numerous times to try and get my speed cap increased, but I keep getting punted back and forth. Sales states they can't increase my speed because the cap is set to 3 mbps, and tech states they cannot increase my speed because I'm maxed out at what I am currently provisioned for. When the tech agents test my line, they've reported back speeds on my line of between 7-9 mbps each time. I've had a sales and tech agent on a conference call and still can't get a resolution.
What else can I do to try and get my speed cap increased?

Thanks for your help Smith6612! I got the same run around answer, so any hail mary attempt you can make is very much appreciated.
If it helps, here is some info I pulled from my modem and traceroute. Not sure what to make of the traceroute.

  • Speed and course methods for location object don't work

I am attempting to use the Location API (JSR 179) to extract the course and speed (getCourse() and getSpeed() of Location object) of the user on a Nokia N95. However, no matter what speed I am travelling at or how good the GPS signal is, NaN is returned. Other fields like latitude and longitude work fine. Why is this? Were these methods never implemented? The problem clearly does not lie with the GPS or the device, as the built-in Symbian applications have no trouble returning course or speed information. Why do these methods not work?

    Hello,
Since you provided no code to show what yu are doing, and you don't give any indication of what " i have some troubles" means, I'd Bing "C# playback .vob files".

  • Loss of download speed using airport extreme and express.

I have Wifi using an Airport extreme base station and an airport express extender.  However, the download speed drops from 21 Mbps to 8 Mbps. Any suggestions to boost the express other than an ethernet connection which would be difficult.

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and take speed measurement at that exact location.
Whatever that is.....likely in the 8-10 Mpbs range......is what the Express will try to "extend".
In other words, the Express can only extend the bandwidth or speed that it receives. It cannot make the connection that it receives go any faster. In that regard, the term "repeater" is probably a more accurate description of what the Express is trying to accomplish.
If you want the Express to extend faster speeds, then it must be located closer to the AirPort Extreme. In addition, anything that you can do to reduce any obstructions in the signal path between the AirPorts will help.
Ideally, you want a line-of-sight relationship between the AirPorts to help reduce the amount of speed loss that occurs with any wireless connection.

  • Download speeds limited to 8-9mbps for FIOS 35 service?

I've *NEVER* had a problem with verizon fios download speeds until last night (7/11) and today.  I've always been able to achieve the d/l speeds of whatever my service is.  When I had 50mbps service, I'd get 50mbps download.  Now I only have 35mbps service and I've always got 35mbps service *until yesterday.   Now my download speeds through various services and bandwidth tests seem to be capped at 8-9mbps.  Is anyone else seeing this sudden drop and cap in download speed??  I'm located in Atco in South Jersey.

Ok on the 35 mb/s standard in your location.
I doubt Verizon is deliberately capping you.
Are you using a few different servers at www.speedtest.net to test your speed?
Do you have more than one device (Mac or PC) you run the tests with and get the same results?
If the answer is yes to both of those troubleshooting questions, I'd suggest you call Verizon tech support and ask for help with the problem.  It could be local to your ONT or something else at their end than needs looking into and correcting.
    Good luck.

  • HT4628 Using an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to extend network; will proximity to AEX vs. AE make a real world difference in speed

I have set up an extended network (thanks go to Bob Timmons for his assistance) using an AE as a base station and a second AE and an Airport Express to extend the wireless signal. Comcast provides, so they say, 50 Mbps. The AEX is located in the bedroom where it is used more often and the AE is in the pantry (for  occasional use in the garage.)  Would I get better speed/signal strength if I switched the two devices; i. e., placed the Airport Extreme in the bedroom and the AEX in the pantry?

Thanks for your response. I set up the wireless network because running Cat-5 was cost prohibitive. My internet connection is very good for general purposes but I ask the question, somewhat academically, because Wi-Fi Explorer shows the Max Rate of the network devices as follows:
Airport Express (located in the bedroom):  144 Mbps @ 2.4 GHz
Airport Extreme (in the pantry):  217 [email protected] GHz
To reiterate, If these two changed locations would I get better speed/signal in the bedroom location? Does it even really matter since Comcast is "only" sending me 50 Mbps? Just a couple of questions to keep my mind active (and confused).

  • Extremely Poor Wi-Fi Speed

I've been experiencing some issues with my Wi-Fi speed recently. I don't use Wi-Fi regularly myself as I prefer wired, but users around the house connect to the network wirelessly due to how far the router is from them. As I was doing some maintenance tasks on the computers downstairs, I realised that the Wi-Fi speed had suddenly become very poor. At first, I assumed it was a PC-specific issue, so I performed some tests on the drivers, ensuring they're up-to-date, even executing the ipconfig /flushdns command in CMD to see if that would correct the issue, but it didn't. So I tried another PC nearby and Speedtest.net reported the same problem (poor speeds). Both PCs had download speeds ranging from 0.17-1mbps, which of course is extremely bad for a fibre package. Signal strength is 2-3 bars. So I went to my own PC (which uses Ethernet primarily) and tested Wi-FI on that. Signal strength is "excellent" yet still the speeds are all over the place, and very poor. Now, I'd expect the speed to be much better on a PC that is pretty much right next to the hub? Note: The speeds reported on my PC (located next to the hub) ranged from 0.25-ish-14mbps. Each test yielded a completely different result. Ping was also extremely high (200ms+, topping 500+ on PCs further away). Things I've tried: Changing wireless channels via the Sky HubResetting wireless adaptersExecuting ipconfig /Flushdns via CMDRebooting the Sky HubTested on a PC with excellent signal strength Wired speeds are pefectly fine. No problems, it's just Wi-FI that is playing up. This seems to be only a recent problem as well. I even tried to download Windows 10 on one of the PCs and it was taking a lifetime; I ended up cancelling it in the end due to the extreme slowness. I've no idea what else to do. If speeds are still bad even on a PC that is right next to the hub, then something is definitely wrong with the hub itself. Right? My Sky Hub is the SR101 model which connects to an Openreach Modem.

Sounds like you have tried the typical diagnosis that I would attempt. Have you tried any other speed testing site?  What are devices like on another wireless network?  I know you may not want to, but perhaps restore the router to its default settings and start fresh. Could be another device causing some sort of interference.  Have you tried all the different wireless channels? You can get software which will scan around and tell you what channels are being used. Failing that, it sounds like your router is at fault and could do with replacing.

  • Can anyone give me a price on upgrading my d/l speed?

    Hello,
Unlike the majority of people that grace these forums I am not here to complain, well, I might have one small complaint. So far I'm generally satisfied with my DSL internet service from Verizon. However, and this is not my small complaint, it's slow for the things I've been trying to do lately. I realize the reason it's slow is because it happens to be .5 - 1mbps download speed. My complaint would be that I can't believe it's 2012 and 1 - 3mbps is not the lowest package offered, that there is something lower, just seems a bit behind the times if you ask me.
Anyhow my question is, how much is it to upgrade to the next speed? An extra $5 a month, an extra $10 a month, perhaps free if Verizon is feeling generous that day? Appreciate any info someone could give me on this.

Check your MyVerizon account. If you log in there should be a place to request an upgrade. Proceed into that section of the account page far enough to where it will show you how much it will cost you and then cancel out of it as if you changed your mind. You could also give Verizon a call as well to see what they will offer you.
Did Verizon exclusively say what the max speed is for your particular location or area? You might be able to go higher than 3Mbps for the same cost as 3Mbps if the speeds are available. That's only if you come out of a CO though instead of a remote DSLAM, and if your area is marked as capable.
Otherwise you can go by the new customer pricing on the Verizon website. The pricing there may be higher or lower than what you'd get for being a current customer. Just be aware if you don't have Phone service with Verizon as well, you will be required to get a landline. Verizon doesn't allow what is known as Dry Loop DSL anymore. You might be able to get Dry Loop through a CLEC such as DSLExtreme or Cavalier though!

  • The mother of all iChat AV problems

All the computers listed below can text chat among themselves but almost all of them cannot audio or video iChat AV with each other.
I hope you can follow along, as this will get very complicated. It is a hard story to tell.
I have been working on this for about 3 weeks now. I have read just about every post in the past 3 weeks. A 2nd Level Apple Tech Support person said I should post this for all to read because it encompasses so many problems all at once without any results and I have some interesting situations. I have tried every single suggestion in the forum without any results. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple iChat support, 2nd level Apple support and Linksys support. I’m an experienced iChat AV person and have been video conferencing for 10 years, starting back with CU-SeeMe. Actually did Beta testing for that CODEC. At the end of this, I will tell you what I haven’t tried yet, and it’s only one thing. And Ralph Jones of the UK, I have read every page of your website about ichat AV and tried everything on it. Thanks for the good work along with everyone else.
I’m the tech administrator for a Day Care Center. At the Day Care Center there are 15 Macs; 12 new 14 inch iBooks - 1.3 GHz with 756 MB RAM, one -15inch PowerBook 1 GHZ with 1 Gig RAM., an iMac 1 GHz with 1 Gig RAM, and one – 17inch 1.67 GHz PowerBook with 1 Gig of RAM.
    My office has 2 Macs using iChat AV, a PowerBook 400 Titanium – 500 MB RAM and a G5 – Dual 2GHz – 3500 MB RAM.
All ADSL connections, all Verizon DSL. There are 8 different locations involved in this. 7 locations are using Linksys WRT54G routers, version 2 and 5’s, all updated to the latest firmware. My office is using a Linksys WRT54GS version 1 also updated to the latest firmware. 7 locations are using Westell 2200 DSL modems, and the one residential location that is DHCP is using a Westell 6100 Modem, the 6100 is set to default settings.
7 locations have static IP’s from the ISP and the 8th location is DHCP direct from Verizon (a typical residential set-up). Each location has 2 computers associated with it, all with iSight cameras. All 17 computers are using iChat AV through an AIM account.
All the computers are running OS 10.4.3 and are up to date as of this posting, including the J2SE 5.0 ver. 3 update and the Security Update 2005-009.
At my office and the office of the Day Care Center, all the computers are designated with a static IP. At the other locations the computers are DHCP, set to automatically get an IP from the router.
In all attempts to video iChat with all the computers, whenever an attempt is made, the 2 computers always get a video preview window and they say, “Starting video chat with …”, but then the dreaded responses always follow after trying to accept; “Did not respond”, “Fail to start video chat”, or “Cancelled the connection.”
So first, my office and the Day Care Office (DCO) have been video conferencing for over 1 year with iChat AV, but now we can no longer video chat. The only thing that changed was at both locations the routers went form an older Linksys WAP54G (A, B, & G) router to the WRT54GS ver. 1 at my office and a WRT54G ver.2 at the DCO a while ago. I can no longer video conference to the DCO nor can they video conference to me between any combination of the 4 computers at the 2 locations (a G5, PB 400, PB 1 GHz, iMac 1 GHz.). Not to long ago they all could video iChat with each other.
My office (with both computers) can iChat with the one location that is DHCP (the Verizon residential setup – both routers set to their defaults, no special stuff). But I can only video conference with the iBook not the PowerBook. In reverse, the iBook can call me but the PB can not. I have brought the PowerBook back to my office and it can video iChat back to the iBook at it’s location from the PowerBook that came from that location. The PB can even connect to my 2 computers on my router at my office. We did a 3 way to the iBook with my G5 hosting, the PowerBook at my office and the iBook at it’s location. When I take the PoweBook back to it’s original location (where the iBook is – the residential location) it can’t video conference with my office, no matter who calls whom.
In the remaining 6 locations, none of the computers can iChat with any of the other locations at all. I have only been able to iChat with the one location that is the Verizon DHCP location (residential setup) and only to the iBook not the PowerBook.
Now to get even weirder, as I said each location has at least 2 computers. At each of the 7 locations (but not my office), the 2 computers at that location, on the same router, can iChat between themselves over AIM (not BonJour) but they can not video chat with any of the other 7 locations.
All 17 computers connect correctly to the Apple iChat test sites: appleU3test01 and appleU3test03 at very good speeds. Oh speaking of speeds, when I first thought maybe it was a connection speed problem, I checked each location by downloading a file off the ISP’s server to check actual speeds, no connection is slower than 75 KB/s, most are plus 150 KB/s downloading the file. I tried 5 different DSL speed websites such as DSLReports.com and they are so inaccurate for testing speeds, they’re not worth using. I would get variations of speeds sometimes 400 to 500 Kbps difference between web services from the same computer at basically the same time.
To recap, my office G5 can only chat with one computer of the 17, the iBook at the Verizon residential setup. The PowerBook from the residential setup can chat back to its home connection to the iBook from my office only. None of the other computers can chat with each other from one location to the other. All the computers (except my G5 and the one iBook) can only chat with the other computer that is located on the same router.
I have concentrated on trying to get my office and the DCO connected. I have tried everything. That’s why after talking with Apple about this, the tech said to post this. Not many people will have so many computers simultaneously to work with. He even said I tried everything.
The one thing I haven’t tried is removing the Linksys router from both ends of a connection and just go through the Westell Modem. There is too much involved changing over the 2 offices or the other locations with all the computers at each location. I can’t afford to experiment that way with working business situations. These are not home environments.
I’m still not sure if the problem is an Apple thing with the latest updates or a router problem because the firmware updates have installed a lot of security stuff. I never had to even consider Port Forwarding or anything. iChat AV with the Linksys routers in their default settings just worked.
One odd thing I noticed while I did all this testing, if you have 2 computers at the same location that both have the same apple test site in the buddy list (example: appleU3test01) when one connects to the test site, the other computer lists the buddy as in use, and the second computer can not connect to it. As soon as the first computer disconnects, it becomes available to the second computer. You would think the test site can handle multiple people at the same time. In addition, each computer can connect to a different test site at the same time over the same router. I don’t know what it means, I just found it interesting.
    Thanks for listening,
    Jim

EZ Jim & Ralph, I appreciate your suggestions.
EZ - I have not had time to view entirely your website on ichat. It looks pretty complete. Too busy. Equipment conflicts I don't believe I have any. There is nothing on any of the computers except the iSight camera. No other external or internal equipment added. Very little software other than Microsoft Office 2004 and a cople of other things. They are not loaded with stuff, pretty basic.
Also each little network location works fine, the only thing I'm having trouble with is Video Chat. They all text chat to each other just fine, including the Windows machines (some locations have windows xp machines only).
Ralph - first - each Day Care location is in a different building around our community and each has a DSL line with it's own static IP from the internet service provider. Each location has one Westell Modem/Router 2200 that has been made into a modem, setting it up as a bridge as my service provider requested. And each location has a Linsys Router with the Static IP to the ISP. Each computer has it's own AIM address.
On the Modem I changed the IP address so it wasn't the same as the Linksys Router.
I want to say, I think like you that it's the modem. I got that feeling from your last post.
I have checked out my G5 and I can Video Chat to a lot of people (settings below). I restored it back to the way it was originally set up when I could video chat with the Day Care Center Office (DCCO). I can chat with my son (he has similar Linksys WRT54G Router, the version I still don't have, and an iSight camera), my parents (they have a cable modem, and an old Linksys A&G Router, iSight), my neighbor (I lent him one of my iSights, he has Verizon Fiber Optic and a Apple Extreme Base Station). All video chatted fine.
My Linksys is now set to defaults. I restored everything back. This is how it was prior to all the testing (port forwarding, etc.)
Security: Firewall protection is enabled. Block Anonymous Internet Requests, Filter Multicast, Filter IDENT (Port 113) are all checked and on. Filter Internet NAT redirection is not checked.
    Administration: UPnP is Enabled.
Applications & Gaming: No Port Forwarding, No Port Triggering, No DMZ, No QoS.
The one thing different in all this is the Modem. I am using a discontinued Westel Wirespeed model; A90-210015-04.
My son is using the same type Router (different version) but a different Westell modem (I don't know which yet) He has Version DSL. The Router is set to defaults like mine is now and we conference fine.
The DCCO who I use to video chat with but can not now, has had the Modem and the Router changed. They had an old Linksys A&G router and an old discontinued Westel Wirespeed model similar to mine (the model I don't know yet). Now they have a Linksys WRT54G ver. 2 and a Westell 2200 Modem/Router (set up as a modem only).
So I'm going to work on the Modem theory first at the DCCO. I'm going to try to put the old modem back and see if it works. I can only do this on Fridays when only one person is in the office. I can't shut them down to test this. So I'll get back to you after Friday.
Thanks again for your good and helpful suggestions.
    Jim
Gee, I wish they would have left the spell checker in this forum.

  • What is the best way to use a SSD for Photoshop/photo editing?

Computer hardware newbie here: I do a significant amount of photo editing work and for a very long time I've experienced Photoshop, Bridge and Photomatix crashing constantly (usually due to insufficient RAM) or just generally taking forever (Bridge took forever to load the thumbnail/preview extractions in a folder full of images, Photoshop took forever to save images and Photomatix took ages to load/merge a set of bracketed photos).  Here are the typical error messages I'd get: http://pastebin.com/J9byczse
As a professional photographer, constantly running into that sort of thing is quite aggravating, so to hopefully avoid ever having to deal with that again I invested in a new custom built computer.  It's Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 32GB of RAM and a 240GB SSD; I'm using the 240GB SSD as my boot drive/OS, all of my programs are installed there, and the page file.  My photos and data are stored on several HDDs.  I have yet to install any of my photo editing software (Photoshop CS6 Extended, Lightroom, Photomatix etc) to the new computer yet since I'd like some advice first.
My basic question is this: what is the best way to take advantage of the SSD (and the computer in general) when it comes to my photo editing software?
    Specifically...
    1. If I have a folder of photos I'm working on, should I move it to the SSD and then work on them from there in order to take advantage of the speed of the SSD?  Would this make any difference in terms of speed if the photos are located on the SSD vs. an internal/external HDD?
    2. Most of what I've read online seems to recommend two separate SSDs, one for installing/booting the apps and one for cache/scratch.  Does it matter if I use my 240GB SSD for both?
    3. This is a fairly new computer and the SSD is already almost half full (102GB used, 120GB free) *WITHOUT* any of my photo editing software installed yet.  I'm concerned about how fast that remaining 120 GB may fill up.  As it fills up will I lose the speed advantage of the SSD vs. a regular HDD?
    4. Sort of similar to #3, but should I bother moving any of my other non-photo editing programs/caches off of the SSD to a HDD and would there be any major difference in the speed/lifespan of the SSD if I did so?  It's mostly Firefox and Chrome and their caches that I'm concerned may be a problem if they remain on the SSD.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have an SSD you can run the cache and programs on the same drive.  However, many recommend a scratch disk size of 100-200 gigs so that will not work here unless you opt for a larger SSD.  Otherwise an internal spinner is recommended that does not contain the program files, or idealy any other files that may want to get acessed at same time (only one read/write head per drive).
With 32 gig of RAM you may not need the constant use of the scratch drive unless working on large images with lots of layers.  So see no advantage to moving folder to SSD for temp work environment.
From what I read the new crop of SSD do not have the wear problems of the older versions.

  • Some podcasts won't sync to iPhone

Got a iphone 3GS running 4.0 iOS and when i synced my iPhone to the iTunes, some of the podcasts wouldn't sync. ALL the podcasts are the same format! all are mp4. I double checked. I have no idea why they won't sync. Any ideas?

Interesting... I'd be curious to know whether other subscribers to the podcast experience any similar issues. Regarding the situation with playback on the computer, I'd suggest checking to make sure your computer meets iTunes' system requirements, in terms of processor speed and RAM. To locate this information on your machine, right click on My Computer and choose Properties. The details of the requirements can be located by going to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
If you meet the system requirements, I'd attempt a clean reinstall:
Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    Remove these applications:
    1. Apple Software Update
    2. Apple Mobile Device Support
    3. iPod for Windows (may or may not be there, either way is fine)
    4. iTunes
    5. QuickTime
    Restart the computer
Download & Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Launch the Utility: Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up
Select any of the above mentioned applications, and click Remove
    Restart the computer again
Download & install iTunes again from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If this still does not resolve the issue, you could update your video drivers on the computer via your Device Manager, or by consulting the website for your PC's manufacturer.
You might also want to unsubscribe/resubscribe to the podcast, which should afford you the option to re-download the episodes. If and when you do this, temporarily disable your anti-virus and firewall software to avoid any possible interferences that might be causing you issue.
Regarding the episodes that will not sync to the iPod, you could try right clicking on the file and choosing the option to Convert Selection for iPod. This ought to give you two copies of the file in iTunes... then connect the iPod to sync it, and see if the episode syncs to the iPod.

  • Home Hub 3 Locks up :-(

I have a BTHomeHub 3 connected to a ADSL phone line. After some indeterminate period it locks up. What I mean by this is that I can no longer see the internet and I can not communicate with it using its IP address. However it is still connected as I can ping its IP Address, which responds correctly.  Also the BT Business broadband desktop help seems to think it can talk to it but thinks the broadband connection is down. It wants me to check the lights, which is currently a bit hard, until I install a web-cam at the far end, however when I last had this the ligts where saying OK ie blue for power and broadand.
This is all a bit of a nuisance as it is physically located several miles away from my normal location, on the far end of a radio up link. This is so I can have something approaching normal slow internet speeds here at our remote location, and hopefully once the ADSL become fibre enable, fast internet speeds.
Other devices on the far end of the radio link are working fine, There is the remote radio kit, a switch, with a pc and the HomeHub on it, I can talk to the PC.  Also if I go to the remote location and plug directly into the HomeHub that doesn't work either :-(
Pressing the reset button doesn't fix it, however a power cycle does.
Only the wired Ethernet is enable
Locally here I have an old BTHomeHub1.5 which I use as a local radio hub, it has everything else switch off, dail-out to ADSL, DHCP, etc. however I don't believe that to be part of the problem, but always say "you don't know!"
    Several questions,
How do I find out why the remote HomeHub3 is locking up and stop it doing so.
Given I can half see it (it pings) from the remote end, is there a magic spell using some back door by which I can reset the hub,
Is there some way I can come into it from the internet and reset it, by connecting via a different internet access point, such as a mobile phone say. What settings do I need to do, to allow this. I know I can do this sort of thing on a Draytek Router.
Should I just throw it away and replace it with my Draytek 2900 but what do I need for when I go Fibre?

  • [SOLVED] Help needed with ACPI accelerometer - Acer Iconia Tab W501

    Hi,
I am trying to get the accelerometer working on my Acer Iconia Tab W501
In windows, it reported as a BMA150 device, so I have that driver loading on boot.
After months of googling and making a mess in /sys, I still have not got the device working. I was working under the assumption that the device hangs off the i2c bus, but a "lucky google" today uncovered that it is showing up through acpi - acpid is present in my daemons array of rc.conf and the kernel module acer_wmi is also loaded.
The device is certainly sending signals to the kernel. Upon boot, dmesg ends up as follows:
    [ 11.689709] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
    [ 12.108374] EXT4-fs (sda2): re-mounted. Opts: commit=0
    [ 12.148026] EXT4-fs (sda3): re-mounted. Opts: commit=0
    [ 17.759006] FS-Cache: Loaded
[ 17.780371] FS-Cache: Netfs 'cifs' registered for caching
[ 17.816097] CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel release 3.3
    [ 22.459133] wlan0: no IPv6 routers present
Now, if I rotate the device, and run dmesg again, I have the following:
    [ 1255.189705] acer_wmi: Unknown function number - 5 - 1
    [ 1257.363688] acer_wmi: Unknown function number - 5 - 1

    [ 1308.784623] acer_wmi: Unknown function number - 5 - 1
acpi -V does not show the device:
    Battery 0: Full, 100%
Battery 0: design capacity 2865 mAh, last full capacity 2678 mAh = 93%
    Adapter 0: on-line

nor is it configured on boot - dmesg | grep ACPI:

Yet, running acpi_listen generates the following when the tablet is rotated:
    PNP0C14:00 000000bc 00000000
    PNP0C14:00 000000bc 00000000
    PNP0C14:00 000000bc 00000000
    PNP0C14:00 000000bc 00000000
So, it would seem the device is working and sending data to the kernel/drivers, it appears some config is needed to get it properly recognised and an entry in /dev generated.
Really hoping there is an acpi expert around who may be able to help me get the device properly recognised and configures, ideally, as a /dev/input/js*
    Cheers.

There is no need to patch the kernel anymore as current kernels have the acer wmi accelerometer patch merged.
Ensure you have the kernel module acer_wmi loading and then the events should be propogated. acpi_listen should show the events.
Using the code from here: http://www.jezra.net/blog/Python_Joysti … ng_Gobject i have written a little daemon that monitors the accelerometer and automatically rotates the screen based on it's position.
    Cheers.
[EDIT] Being a laptop, I am guessing the accelerometer is possibly on the hard drive?? used for shock protection?? So if that is the case, I am not sure you will be able to utilise it in the same way as a tablet's accelerometer. There are articles on the web for setting up hard drive accelerometers in linux. The other consideration you need is that the accelerometer may not be on acpi. It could be on the i2c bus (commonly where sensors such as fan speed, core temps etc are located), in which case you will need the i2c driver to get the accelerometer events recognised in the kernel (ensure i2c kernel modules are loaded). So check exactly how the kernel detects the accelerometer, is it on acpi or the i2c bus?[/EDIT]

  • Gap_y setting ignored, conky placed incorrectly

I have a weird problem with my Conky in Openbox. It seems to be drawn in the correct place initially, but then it snaps to the top of the screen, dragging bits of the wallpaper with it. Here is my .conkyrc:

    And the screenshot is here
Turning off xcompmgr and getting rid of the wallpaper didn't help. The strange thing is that it gets drawn correctly initially (you can see that from the wallpaper weirdness, and also when it's loading it shows a black rectangle where conky would be). The strangest thing is that once in a blue moon it does actually place conky correctly (i.e. if I kill and restart it enough times).
    Help appreciated!

When conky refreshes, I can see the footprint the screen is going to take up before it lays out the text and it's staying at the same size. None of the options above seem to make it increase.
    Any suggestions?
    maybe try:
    max_specials 1024
Could supply a "sample" agenda-export.txt for me to try here?

  • Serious trouble to update / upload my iWeb-Site to MobileMe

I have created a website with iWeb 11 and frequently updated this website from several locations while beeing on the road. Now while it became too many photo albums I restructured the site with a "my albums" site which organizes these photo albums. Now I attempted several times to update / upload the site. But first I became an error message that some file in one photo album would be missing. So I deleted that album and recreated it from scratch. Then I got the error message that the mobileme server wouldn't be avialble. And finally I only got the message that the website could't be published.
I start to get upset. What can I do?
Anything that helps is highly appreciated!

Roxpat ~ Glad that worked out for you (and thanks for your appreciative words.) I'd heard good things about +Media Temple+ a year ago and had prompt responses to my email enquiries about speeds between their center in California and Spain. (In the end, though, I didn't need their services.)
    Roxpat wrote:
I will say that they seem accustomed to users who know what they are doing (that would not be me), and I find it difficult to understand what they are telling me to do.
I agree; this was part of their reply to me:
Well since you are in Spain you would not have the ability to take advantage of our “short path bandwidth”. Although our servers are all enterprise-grade, our data center is Tier 4 certified, and we use redundant fiber backbones to the Internet, there are many other factors involved that dictate the final speed you experience. Therefore, it is really difficult to say what your transfer speeds will be like with our service. We recommend conducting trace routes and ping tests to s1555.gridserver.com for insight into the network speed and routes between your location and (mt) Media Temple's (gs) Grid-Service.
...Yes, I thought, ...let me get onto those +"trace routes and ping tests"+ right away! (Presumably via +Network Utility+ in the Utilities folder.)

  • Can dictation be improved?

I have read somewhere that the dictation will adapt to your voice and you can train it. Is there a way to expedite this? For example reading a passage and on the fly correcting the words it interprets from you so that it starts to recognize your speech anomalies?

They made significant improvements to the EDGE network prior to the iPhone launch (users of EDGE modems noticed an increase in their download speed), so improvements CAN be made BUT nothing can be done from the phone side. You may have even noticed that your speed varies depending on your location and time of day (related to how much capacity is in the area and how many users are using it).
I'd imagine that this is currently as good as it can be in some areas, with other areas still requiring additional hardware to reach it's potential, but the best is still going to be slower than 3G.
