Speed cahnging of a clip

I am curious to know why when i change speed i.e. slow motion to a clip, the length ofcourse changes of the clip in the timeline, but why does the increase of length push the rest of the clips to the right- and i.e. outsyncing my visuals with the sound.
Is there is any way around this issue?

when you slow down a clip that already exists in the timeline you are (well, FCP is) increasing it's lenght to achieve the slowdown. If it 2 seconds and you want it slow, it has to be a longer clip to have those same 2 minutes of content. FCP then pushed everything in the timeline down instead of overwriting something already there. This is actually a good thing.
You could push everything after the clip (including audio) you want to effect way down the timeline first, make the speed change and then close that gap up. Or use a fit to fill and use less media that what the original clip has.

If you right click on your clip, does it offer to Optimize Video? If so, after you optimize you can change the speed.

  • Problem speeding up a video clip

When I try to change the speed of one video file by pressing command-J or by pressing modify speed, I get a failure message and it says "Unable to complete command. A conflict occurred during a trim operation." This hasn't happened on any other clip, even in this same sequence. I've restarted several times, run diagnostics and got Pro kit update, but this one clip refuses to change. Any ideas? Thanks.

When you change the speed of the clip in the timeline the sequence ripples to accommodate the speed change. If there are overlapping track you may get a clip collision on a different track that prevents the sequence from rippling. In this instance you'll get this error message. You can match frame to a new copy of the clip (Cmd-Opt-F), apply the speed change to that clip and then edit it into the timeline however you want.

  • Speed up/slow down clips

    Hi
I must be missing a trick here. Does anyone know how to speed up/slow down clips in i-movie?

Did apple actually decide not to add these feature on IM08. If so why?
I doubt the Apple made a conscious decision to remove any features. It is more likely the current inability to "thread" the command structure that is causing all of the problems. Basically, the old application allowed third-parties to create code routines that could be selected and called directly/immediately by the user when he or she wished to create a special effect. In essence, the source data is passed to the called routine, modified on the spot, and then inserted into the "timeline" replacing the source content. However, iMovie '08 does not perform any immediate/direct processing. Instead, it lists the source segments to be modified and states what "effect" is to be applied. No real action is taken until the file is actually to be shared or exported. Then, and only then, is a physical movie created. Therefore, the problem is to create an application (iMovie '08) with the capability of extending its own command list, as well as, define these new commands as a process or series of processes which can be called independently at a later time. If your are familiar with FORTH or a similar programming language which has a threaded command structure (i.e., one in which you can define new commands in terms of previously defined commands and formally add them to the command list/structure) then you will likely understand the problems that need to be overcome here by Apple and all third-party companies likely to be involved in creating/re-creating "plug-ins" for iMovie '08.

  • IMovie 08 - Speed up/ slow down clips

anybody know how to speed up / slow down clips in iMovie 08?
    thanks

You can do slow motion with iMovie 08, but it requires the assistance of other programs.
Give the more powerful iMovie 06 a try, you'll find these features and others built in.
Below is a short video showing how slow motion works.

  • Help! Am trying to change the speed of a film clip and am having probs

Hi there all, this is my first foray into Apple Supp Communities, so thanks in advance for your help:)
I have downloaded an 8min HD video from my new Panasonic camera into imovie. All good. Now for some reason when I click on the movie
it is halved in time - showing a much speeded-up visual, although the sound track is at the same old speed.
I have tried to find a way to slow it back down to normal speed to no avail.
I next checked tutorials and came across one showing how to double-click to use inspector to change speeds, reverse etc.
Excellent except when I double click, the film plays only.
I have checked this community site and came across what appeared to be my answer - to change imovie preferences ,
Followed the following instructions (see below) -thank you John, but alas, alak, I find when I go into library preferences, I do not find any file referring to
imovie, the closes I come to is the whole ilife file which doesn't open to any more options (ie does not give me imovie to choose or delete etc).
    How frustrating!!!!
Can anyone please tell me how to locate the com.apple.iMovie8.plist file so that I can delete/update it?
I have purchased the computer without the original disks so don't know if that poses a problem if I delete something!
    Thanks again,
    Danielle
iMovie's preference file is in your user Library>Preferences folder and is named com.apple.iMovie8.plist - delete (trash) this file after closing iMovie. When next opened, iMovie will create a new file with the default settings. You may need to change some settings to suit your own preference.
There should be a Browser tab in iMovie's Preferences once this new file is created. In that tab is an item "Double-click to Edit/Play" - select Edit. Double-clicking a clip should now bring up the Inspector.
By skimming over a clip (not clicking) you should be able to see the gear icon at the beginning of the clip. Clicking this icon will cause a panel to appear, from which you can select various items, some of which will open the Inspector.
It's important that you locate and delete that preference file. As your Browser tab is missing, something is clearly amiss with that file.

    Hi
    In iMovie'11 (version 9.0.x)
    on top menu row - Apple/iMovie/File/Edit/Cut (Can vary dep. on language - in Swedish Apple/iMovie/Arkiv/Redigera/Klipp . . . )
down Cut menu - Slow playback/Raspid Playback/Re-play in Slow Motion and onvards
Here one can select the Pre-Set speeds
Are you familiar with getting 'inspector' to run?
No - but I guess that Double Click on clip/sequense or ctrl-Click on it might open it.

  • How do I change the speed of a video clip after making it a Smart Object?

In order to apply the same Camera Raw filter to every segment of a clip I was going to split multiple times, I converted the whole clip to a Smart Object, applied my Camera Raw filter settings, and then split the clip and deleted some portions.  Now I want to make certain portions of those clips slow-motion, but even if I right-click on the right side of the layer and select "Clear Smart Filters", all I see when I right-click on the clip in the timeline are the motion options; I can no longer change the speed or the audio.  Is there a way to do this without having to make all the cuts in the beginning, changing the speed and the audio, and then having to go back and convert each individual segment into a smart object and then apply the same ACR filter to each one?

    Brett,
Thanks for addressing this question.  I tried it and see that the embedded file is the entire clip that I started with, not the trimmed version that I turned into a SO, but at least I could go back and make a change that way in a pinch.
If you wouldn't mind looking at this video between :50 and 1:40, and tell me if you think that AE or PP would give me significantly better results in the jumping segments where I slowed it down to 25%:  2014-06-26 And the last thing I expected to see jump out of the box was Albert Einstein! on Vimeo.  I am trying to keep my expenses down by only using PS CC for video editing, and love the Camera Raw filter capabilities.  By using PS CC it also lets me lay down my audio and edit to the audio w/o, as Mylenium suggested, outputting my file from PS CC into either AE or PP to do the slow-mo part.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Can Motion alter the speed of a video clip?

Or must this be done in FCP?
I want to speed up a clip.

You can alter the FPS in the media pane, or play with the scrub filter - see: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=635543 for Scot Walker's tip. Or you can use compressor or FCP, but you must send the self contained export/import of FCP to Motion. Timeline speedchanges are ignored.

  • How can I change the speed of a video clip?

hi, I'm a new user of iMovie 08.
I fail to find the function button that can make a video clip slow down or faster, such as change the speed to 60% of the normal speed, etc.
    I know iMovie 06 has this function,it's in video FX,duration,speed...but I can't find the menu in iMovie08.
Is there anyone knows where it is?
    many thanks!

    Upgrade to iMovie 06.

  • How to apply same speed rate to several clips?

    Hi,
Say I have 10 clips on a timeline, how I can change their speed to 70% or 43% or whatever, but all together?
    Thank you
    -T

Ok, the solution is to use Compound clip.
    1. Choose group of clips,
    2. Press Option+G (or right click Compound clip),
then all the compund clip will consist of grouped clips, but will behave as one.
    3. Apply the effect you want.
    Profit.

  • Speeding up imported .mov clips

Apple has given me a great tool to use for creating tutorials, not only to share but also to burn as a pretty solid DVD.
That said I will describe what I am doing and what I would like to do.
    1) I am using SnapzPro with iMovie '08 to make tutorial videos that I am sharing from .mac,
and later aspire to make full on DVD's from.
    2) I have sucessfully imported, edited, voiced over, and shared this clips with only one minor detail.
What i wish to do is speed up some of the clips when playing back. Does anyone know how to do this? Because, it seems like apple while simplifying the app, they've taken out even more edit controls from iMovie, where I might actually have to purchase FC express to achieve what I want to do.
-One thing I tried, and failed at, was taking the movies into QT pro, and speeding up the playback time, but when imported into iMovie, it strips that setting and plays back at normal speed.
Because of the length of the capture, I want to speed up playback, and then transition to highlight points of the film, is there a way to do this in '08?

    Thanks for the tip,
I guess what i am going to try is, importing the clips into FCP 5 and see if I can speed them up and add my transitions there. FCP is one app I have to learn all over again every time I use it, but one I edit there I guess try and reintroduce the clips into imovie and see how that goes..

  • Speed change messing up clip when sending to Motion from FCP

Im trying to send a clip to Motion from Final Cut Pro. In final Cut Pro I had part of the clip at regular speed and the other part of the clip I had at 75% speed. When it gets sent to Motion, the clip the is supposed to be the 75% speed one is a different clip. How do I get the clip to get sent to Motion and also have the 75% speed effect on it when it gets sent to Motion? Or, can I slow it down in Motion? Thanks!

You can just send your clip to Motion then make the speed change in Motion, that is the common workflow.
FCS 3 now fixes this issue when sending a speed clip from FCP to Motion, so with FCP 7 / Motion 4, sending your 75% clip to Motion will retain that speed change in Motion.

  • How do I adjust the speed of an audio clip only in Preimer Pro CC?

Need to adjust the speed of a short audio clip so that it begins at zero, and slowly comes up to normal speed. Anyone know how I can do this?

    I don't think you can.

  • Speed adjustment (not entire clip)

I am already well aware that in order to adjust the speed of a clip in your movie you have to "convert" the clip. My question is that if you select a clip in the actual project and convert it, will it just convert the that selected clip or will it convert the ENTIRE clip (the source clip). Currently I have an 11 second clip I want to convert and it's taking FOREVER cause the source clip is kind of 2 hours or so. Haha! Can anyone help me out?
