Speed Change

Afternoon everyone -
Quick question; I am using the speed change dialogue (command + J) to do some speed changes to HD video in the timeline.  I am slowing the same footage down in two different spots within a sequence.  I slow it down to 50% in one spot and 5% in another.  The speed change is working perfectly for the video but not for the audio.  I would like the audio to play back at the adjusted speeds.  The clip slowed down to 50% is working (both video and audio).  The audio pitch is lower and in sync with the video (this is exactly what I want).  When I play back the video slowed to 5% it is jacked up... real technical term I know.  The video plays back at the right speed but the audio is clicking, skipping, and playing back nonsense.  When I first made the adjustment the audio was playing perfectly in sync with the video and very much pitched down (this again is what I want).  Now all it does is stutter and not even come close to what I think it should be doing.  So... my question is, what am I doing wrong?  Can FCP 7 play back audio slowed down with the speed change dialogue as slow as 5%?  I could just fade the audio out at this point in the timeline but I would rather not.  I am hoping someone might be able to help me figure out what I am doing wrong.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
Matt

Not easy for me to answer, all of my intricate speed changes have been in the olden days of silly ol'DV. But you have a folder called audio renders. You might try locating the file associated with this effect and deleting the audio render. that will force a re-render.
However, 5% may exceed the abilities of FCP's limited rendering engine to resolve the audio waveform. I don't know for sure and I'm not on my FCP machine to check for you and you haven't given us anything to go one except "HD," which does nto help much.
5% audio is unintelligible so this is an effect you can fake with some time and creativity. You'd find a suitably compatible sped range, might be 15% or less, that gives you a workable result. Exprt it, bring it back in as an auio-only movie, and slice it into your sequence.
It is the collective experience of many of the profiessional filmmakers here that the best effects–both visual, aural and emotional–are not always literal; they're implied, they encourage and allow the audience do the work.

  • How to offset speed change in frame rate conforming?

Hi all. I am conforming video from about 25fps to 30 fps in cinema tools, before editing in FCP. Does any one know of a formula, or calculator tool that would tell me the speed change percentage to use, to get the clip to play in normal speed while editing? Is there a setting to do this automatically in FCP?

And you needn't speed change the footage at all. Simply cutting 25fps footage into a 30fps timeline will do. If you really desire a formula, to convert 25 fps to 30, you need to run it slower (less frames) so the speed is 25/30 or 5/6ths or 83% - to do it the other way, 30/25 = 6/5ths or 120%.
But, like I said, if you cut PAL footage into an NTSC timeline, it will adjust the speed appropriately - sizing too...

  • Upgrade and plug ins migration ? speed changes and transitions to motion 3

I have the FCS2 upgrade on its way soon i hope..
will my natress plug ins and others migrate when i go from FCS1 to 2?
I am mid project - have done all my captures but havent got into the nitty gritty of the edit yet - you reckon its a bit risky to upgrade?
I am super keen to get the ability to easily do ramps (in Motion 3 or in FC 6) and 3d logo fly arounds. Looking fwd to being able to throw transitions and speed changes into Motion 3 - i hear that it can deal with that now - is this true?

    Thanks - thats all good

  • Slow motion and speed changes blurry jittery - SOLUTION!

I Have had a few issues with slo mo and sped up stuff going blurry or jittery on me.
This is from HD from a HC3 down converted (camera does this) to SD anamorphic (pal).
I think i have found the solution - and welcome any exra content from more experienced heads than mine.
Of course there are limitations to how far you can slo mo before you get the jitters - anyway- here is my hot tip!
Change your speed (fit to fill , or modify speed) of the clip in the canvas (leaners - watch your sound timing - it can be thrown off if you have locked off ausio tracks) open up your clip from the canvas by double cliking it, tap the motion tab, cross the motion blur box - adjust the sample setting from 4 to 32 (i dont know exactly what this does but this is the key!, drop motion blur down to 0 %.
RENDER! voila! This has quickly resulted in some speed changed clips that hold their form rather nicely (no blurring or strobing , jitters etc - that have plagued me in the past - i'm doing lots of sport stuff where speed changes are common)
Hope this helps other relative newbs out there! And if anyone would care to comment on why this works i would be all ears!

I know what you mean, I end up with an extra frame if I set an in and out point then insert/overwrite replace or superimpose.
I find the quickest work flow is to
    0. mark the in point at start of clip
    1. copy the clip, command c
    2. go to the end of the sequence, end
    3. paste clip
    4. change speed, look at duration of clip, change speed %, command j
    5. change duration back to original duration,
    6. cut clip from end of time line,
    7. return to in point and paste clip.
I find this does give me control over the clip, does not affect the timeline and is frame accurate.
I agree you should be able to change the clip speed without affecting the duration.
    The alternative is as Andy described, fit to fill, here is an alternitive way of doing/describing this process;
adjust the out point of the clip to the new point you want,
move the clip out of the space on the timeline where you want the clip with the speed change to go,
place the CTI in the space where you want the new clip to go,
double click on the clip you want to adjust, opening it in the viewer,
drag the clip from the viewer to the canvas and the fit to fill option will appear along with all of the other options,
this will also do what you want, I believe there is no one click solution.
Someone please prove me wrong! I would love to be able to "command j" in to the speed dialog box, click on a check box that says keep duration or in/out points and simply change the duration.

  • Clean up speed changes in a zoom/track

    Hi again,
I am just cleaning up some final issues on my edit and there is one tracking shot that has some slight speed change (bit jumpy) in it. I was wondering if I can smooth the speed with a filter or by using keyframe editor in motion?
I am pretty new to Motion, so please forgive me.
    Many Thanks

Does it have to do with this?
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3686148?tstart=0
If all you want to do is smooth out bad camera work, use the Smooth Behavior in Motion. Make sure you have Optical Flow selected.

  • Speed changes with REVERSE don't transfer over to Motion on Round Trip

I don't even know if there is a solution to this problem. I have a clip in my FCP timeline that is playing at 80% speed and in REVERSE. When I highlight the clip then "SEND TO MOTION PROJECT," it opens in motion but plays the opposite end of the source footage. It is still playing 80% speed and in reverse, but it's looking at the other end of the footage.
In other words, if I had a 1-minute piece of source footage and 00:01-00:10 of that footage marked in FCP and sent to Motion, Motion is actually looking at 00:50-01:00.
Anybody ever had this happen? How do I fix it?

Even if I try to do the speed change natively in Motion, it still yields the same result in terms of what part of the source footage it's looking at.
In this case, if I wanted to do use the optical flow option, I would do it in Shake because the source footage is an hour long, and Motion has to analyze the ENTIRE source file rather than just the part that's being referenced. (Annoying) Shake does only the part you are using.

  • FCP6 BIG PROBLEM - Media Manager Speed change from FCP5.1.4

    Hi!
We have problem using a media manager project from FCP5.1.4 in FCP6. Almost ALL clips with speed change are messed up (all new speed around 1% to 7%). This is really a problem for us, since we always do media manager of everything we do to be able to go back and make changes.
We have 2 MacPro 2 x 2.66Ghz, 8GB RAM, 10.4.9, Quicktime 7.1.6, FCP6, Decklink HD extreme or AJA Kona LH (with the latest driver).
We tryed with different format: HDTV 1080i50, DVCProHD 720p59.94, SD Uncompressed 10bit, .... always the same problem.
Is there a new way to use the MM in FCP6?
    Thank you!

Hi! And thanx for the tip.
But we use Media Manager everyday with speed change WITHOUT any problem (with FCP 5.1.4).
We already try something similar, we copied the good clips (with speed change) from the ORIGINAL timeline to the media manager one, deleted the bad clip (with the wrong speed change) and pasted the good one in there place. Then we reconnected those clips with the MEDIA MANAGED one. We get a warning that the IN and OUT of the media are not the same, CLICKED continue and everything is always (well 95% of the time) OK.
SO yes, we have the solution, but it's really really long and painful, especially with multilayered sequences.
Right now, when I open any Media Manager in FCP 5.1.4 (created with FCP 5.1.4) everything works fine. Doing the same thing with FCP6 = speed change problem.
Thanks again, still looking for another solution.

  • How do You Make Accurate Speed Changes To Clips?

How do you apply a speed change to an audio clip in with frame accuracy? I have 2 audio clips, one from a camera and the other from a cheap solid-state recorder. The latter has audio drift and needs a one-off, constant adjustment to sync it with the camera audio.
However, FCP only wants to execute clip speed changes down to 1/10th of 1%, which is not small enough. Does anyone know what to do here - either within FCP or Sountrack Pro? Thanks.

I just know that often when capturing long segments of DV tape for our shows, we occasionally get a clip that comes in at 47.998 or 48.002, instead of the solid 48kHz.
When I export to aiff, it seems to clear up any sync drifting we experience with the original clips.
    Might give it a go.
STPro is a solid option as others pointed out. I simply suggested a quick fix to a possible sync/drift issue. (quicker than learning a new interface...though that's something that should be done anyway, for the tools STPro offers).

  • Speed changes

can anyone offer the smoothest solution to basic speed changes (other then time re-mapping in the Motion tab.
i was curious if there w as a pre-set effect for doing quick ramp ups (and downs).
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The quickest way for basic ramping is, isolate the part you want to speed up/down on the timeline with a couple of cuts, select it, press command(apple)+J and enter a percentage.

  • Export EDL or XML for seq with speed change

    Hi,
I am trying to export an EDL or XML of a 30 sec sequence of 10 clips. 5 of them have speed change. Basic speed change, not variable. They are UC 10bit from a DigiBeta captured with a Kona 2.
The problem is that the exported EDL or XML doesn't get the right clips in and out points for recapture on other systems. Any clue?

As long as there are speedchanges in the sequence, FCP will screw the EDL timecodes for source clip in/out and position in the timeline....and it's way off.
And the problem is not with Flame, if I open the XML or EDL in TextEdit, I see the TC mistakes. We do that all the time with the Avid MC and it works very well. Even if the speed changes wouldn't go through, I would expect clips coordonates and in/out to be ok.

  • Problem with speed change in Twixtor Pro

Using Twixtor 5.0 and After Effects CS6, and I'm struggling with a situation where keyframing the Speed% change causes the slow frames to freeze for several frames at a time.
    What works:
    Drop clip into new comp
Enable Time-remaping, and extend the length of the comp to a good minute or so longer than source clip
Add Twixtor Pro to clip layer (appears to behave the same if you drop this comp into another clip and apply to that)
Set frame rate to match comp's (and clips)
Set speed% to something low, like 5.
Clip plays back nice and smooth and slow, every frame is interpolated.
    What doesn't work:
Repeat above steps... up to 5
    Set a keyframe for speed% to 1000
Advance playhead ahead a second, set another keyframe to maintain speed
Move several frames, set keyframe for speed% to 5
When I playback the clip, after the last speed change, instead of nice smooth motion, I get a still frame, then several identical frames, then it jumps again to the next incremental frame, and so on – with NO smooth interpolated frames. The result, as you can guess, is quite jerky.
If you trash all the keyframes and just leave the speed change to 5, it plays totally smooth. Which is just great, except for the fact I want to actually animate it.
    Has anyone encountered this?
In the meantime as a backup, I'm using Timewarp, but I would love to sort this out.

Hi Rick, I appreciate your persistence to help. That's definitely another way to use the plugin which I've never used in the past, but does eliminate the need to enable time-remapping. Certainly not as common as the majority of the tutorials out there, including Re:Vision's own.
For the sake of argument I tried this approach, but unfortunately the problem persists. Out of curiosity, were there specific problems you avoided by using the solid method vs applying directly to the footage?
If I can dig up my serial numbers I will install the CS6 update as instructed. I'll definitely update this post if I get any positive results.
    UPDATE:
I'm pleased to say upgrading to 5.1.5 fixed the problem!

  • Timeline moving when I make a Speed change!!  Can this change?!?

As I'm sure everyone is aware, when you change the Speed of a clip to either slow it down or speed it up the entire rest of the time changes with it. For example, if I speed up a clip I am editing at the beginning of my sequence every clip after it moves forward on the timeline to affect my speed change. This is VERY annoying because it means that when you go back to adjust the speed of a certain clip and you have cliped placed after it (that need to stay where they are) ALL OF THEM MOVE. Does anybody know of a setting or perference where this can be changed.....? Please, I'm desperate!

This is the way it works, and you need to adjust your workflow around it. If it didn't work this way, if you sped up the shot, you'd have a hole, and if you slowed it down, it'd overwrite your footage after it. It adjusts the section it is in because that is how it is designed. Don't like it, do things differently.
    1) load the clip in the viewer and slow it there first, THEN cut it in the timeline.
    2) drop the clip at the tail of the sequence, double click on it, then adjust it, then move it to where you want.
#1 is the way to go...and is the way FCP was designed to work. It is just something you have to get used to.

  • Magic trackpad tracking speed changes

My Magic trackpads tracking speed changes to slow when I log off. I have to reset it when I log on.
How do I set the tracking speed to stay put?

If you use MagicPrefs, some people believe that causes the Magic Trackpad to default back to slowest tracking speed on restart/relog. Have a look at the Magic Prefs preferences pane for the Trackpad and see if you can change the default tracking speed in that instead of the System Preferences pane.
If you don't use MagicPrefs, there is a fix using Terminal for the same problem with the Magic Mouse, and it may work for the trackpad too. I'm adapting this from Tyler Nicols' post on his blog.
    Open a Terminal Window
Enter the following command to see what your current setting is:
             defaults read -g com.apple.trackpad.scaling
This will return a numeric value. To speed up (or slow down) your mouse tracking, you can simply change this number accordingly by typing the following command, replacing the “your_trackpad_speed” with a new number such as 5.0. Notice that read has been changed to write:
            defaults write -g com.apple.trackpad.scaling your_trackpad_speed
    So, for example:
            defaults write -g com.apple.trackpad.scaling  5.0
You may need to restart your mac to see the changes take effect.
Let me know if it works for you.
