Speed decrease, ping increase!

I know there's more threads containing the same problem, but I feel another thread should be created. More so for the BT team to take note.
Since the weekend, from 6:00 p.m. onwards my speed is dropping dramatically. I am unable to stream any content without it buffering ridiculous amounts, pages are taking forever to load; sometimes not at all.
I have done numerous speed tests. The servers on SpeedTest.net that are in Bristol are giving me stupidly high pings and awful speeds. Sometimes as little as 1Mb! Yet the upload seems not as affected.
The BT Wholesale Speed test gives me slightly better, but has also given me speed as low as 1Mb. When I connect to a server in London on SpeedTest.net I do get a lot better results, albeit not the speed I usually get.
I can't comment on what the speed is like throughout the day as I am at work, but it seems to be fine when I get in, but like I said, from 6:00 p.m. onwards it plays up.
From what I've read, it seems to be only the South West that is getting these problems as I live in Weston-super-Mare and the other people posting are having problems in the surrounding areas.
Let's hope it gets sorted soon! I am not paying for a service which is slower than ADSL at peak times.

  • Speed drop & Ping increase linked to IP change

I recently migrated to Infinity 2 and was pleasantly surprised by the overall performance.
Downloads in the 62+Mb range, Uploads 15.5+ and Ping around 9ms
At this time my IP was in the 86.xxx.xxx.xxx range and it stayed consistantly fast until overnight on the 15-16th when the IP changed to the 109.xxx.xxx.xxx range.
The speed has dropped considerably (by 10-12%) and the ping has virtually doubled going to between 17 & 19 ms.
I have to say that this is very dissapointing and as I was getting very stable results over the first few days when my IP was in the 86.xxx.xxx.xxx range I am at a loss to see why I was moved to an inferior group of IP addresses.
Maybe others have seen this sort of change.
I know that the IP addresses are "dynamic" but I've never has such a series of changes in all my years of being on Broadband internet.
For info neither the modem or the router (a HH3A) have been switched off or reset since the OR engineer left.

How often is the ip address changing?  Daily, hourly, ... ???
IP address will change when the router reconnects.  This can be because (a) you force it (reset etc), (b) because it loses connection due to a HomeHub error, or most likely (c) because the lower level connection between the modem and the cabinet is lost.
The most likely reason for (c) is noise on the line of some sort.  That would also cause DLM to lower your speed, and add interleaving which would increase your ping.  You could try a quiet line test, but most noise is outside the audible range.
I don't know of any difference between the 86.xxx.xxx.xxx range and 109.xxx.xxx.xxx range.  I know sometimes BT routes insanely from the south to London via Sheffield, which could (?) be associated with different ip range.  This causes significant ping increases (around 8-10 extra ms), but doesn't seem to impact most download speeds. (I'm on 81.xx.xx.xx and do have that issue.  ping to bbc around 28.)
It would be worth posting your full statistics.  http://speedtester.bt.com/ and choose the ‘ADSL and Fibre diagnostics’ option.  .... ah I see you have.

  • Why does my ping increase after a few minutes of resetting AirPort?

I connect various phones and my Macbook Air to WIFI using my AirPort Express. I have been plagued with WIFI and ISP problems and recently upgraded my modem to try and fix this issue that persists to this day. I feel like I have narrowed down the problem to my AirPort Express.
After resetting my Airport everything appears to be running smoothly. My download/upload speeds are adequate, I have a very strong WIFI signal, all is well. When I go to play online games I notice an increase in my ping within 10 minutes of resetting my Airport. It happens fairly abruptly - it is not an incremental change. For example I am usually jumping from ~100ms to ~450ms. This happens on multiple servers and can't be tied to one host.
After resetting my AirPort my ping goes back down to normal but jumps up after a few moments. I have my Arris modem set to bridge, and I've tried connecting to the 5GHz channel through the router and there doesn't seem to be any difference.
This problem started a month or so ago. The AirPort has worked absolutely perfectly for a couple of years now. It is really only the ping in online games that seem to be effected – my download/upload speeds are running well which has me stumped.
    AirPort Express
    Version 7.6.4

I really appreciate any help! I am out of warranty with the device to call apple and I've spent more than a lifetime on the phone with TWC.

Wireless is extraordinarily complicated. It is more a wonder that it works that doesn't.
Two follow up questions. First, I have taken both the phones in the household off wifi as well as my Roku and that didn't make any noticeable differences.
It is worth a try.. it is wireless after all.. voodoo in another medium.
your answer doesn't really help with two issues. My computer used to connect with no ping increase before this sudden change and why does this change start happening after a few moments of clarity and then skyrocketing pings?
How old is your Express? Anything more than 3 years can suffer due to build quality.. apple is no different to other brands now. A sudden change can indicate poor internals.
7.6.4 is lousy firmware.. test with 7.6.1 if that is possible. (newest ones may not downgrade)
I personally have heaps of Extreme and TC but avoid the express.. it is expensive for what it is.. a very low end wireless AP that can double up as a router at a pinch.
If you have an old Express that you upgraded the firmware.. you may not have noticed the upgrade coincided with the poor pings.. but it can happen.
Also Mavericks.. if you upgrade installed mavericks it can have dire effects on the wireless.. even the latest update to Mavericks has been causing wireless issues. Mavericks and networking is somewhat akin to tin cans and wet string. With the string fraying.
    So reset to factory.
Downgrade the firmware.. then reset to factory a second time..
Test it with short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. NOT apple names.. since mavericks changed to SMB networking from AFP in previous versions.
Downgrade firmware by holding down the option key whilst you select version number. Pick from the list that will appear.
    Test close to the Express..
Test with no wireless security.. remember it is a test.
Run the wireless diagnostics on the computer to see if it shows anything.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
The reason for increase in ping times, can be link speeds dropping, WMM failing.. as it seems to .. or just plain old bad drivers.
I have made huge improvements in things like latency in routers that allow actual settings on the wireless to be changed.. packet size in particular.. one serious issue here is Apple have not given us access to any settings.. in airport particularly but even in the Mac.. this stuff is hidden from end users.

  • Why has my Latency (Ping) increased from 20ms to 3...

Got BT Infinity installed (FINALLY, after over 12 months of them putting it off every 3 months) but this was due to a problem in our village I believe. Anyway, I am right at the end of my line and 5KM or so from my local exchange, I was only getting 2.3 meg max on ADSL and 0.8 meg upload, on BeThere (02) broadband. My pings averaged 18ms to BBC.co.uk (London/Local Servers).
Now, had infinity installed last Tuesday, and expected upload and download speeds according to Infinity of 42.1MB download and 6.5MB upload. Fastest speedtest yet was 48MB on speedtest.net and fastest upload was 6.7MB.
    Now two questions:
    1. A few days ago, I was receiving speeds on average of about 42-44MB in speedtests, now as of yesterday morning, this has dropped to around 38Meg. My Upload is about the same at 6.2meg.
    2. THE MAIN QUESTION - Why has my Latency increased from about 20 (18-23ms on average) to 30?
Every speedtest I do now for the last 2 days, is coming back with a ping of 29-33ms which is a sudden increase of 10ms. I'd like to know what may have caused this, as I game and I know a better ping is crucial for gaming.
Can anyone shed some light here?
    Thanks

    Nick134 wrote:
Well as you can see, I've attached you a screenshot of my tracert command results, what do you think?
Well from that tracert you can see the increase isn't all down to interleaving, the first hop after the router is only 15ms, that's the interleaving, it's after this hop that the ping times increase to near 30, so in your case the ping increase is all down to how bt are routing your connection over their network.
Here's my tracert to the same website, routing is different for me and hence the better pings, also the lower interleaving depth on the second hop is also helping of course

  • Ping Increase

Since i got BT Infinity my ping was around 20ms but it has slowly being going up and today my internet died twice and now it's up to 25ms that may not sound like much but as a gamer i need to lowest ping's especially when connecting to US server's and not to mention when i had bt total broadband they managed to get me 20ms with no problem's.
Anyone shed any light on this or a mod to help sort this out.
On a side note how do i go about getting v3 of the HomeHub cause v2 is causing some problem's, i cant sort out my FTP server and msn disconnect's once an hour every hour, but it worked perfect on v2 when i had BT total Broadband but the day and hour Infinity went on it's messed with the ftp server and msn even with the exact same setting's i ran on the other router and netgear router i had with sky

Residential customers of Infinity have a dynamic IP. This IP address is generally changed when the PPP session drops. If the DLM resynced you in the early hours of the morning (which it has for me on profile changes) then the PPP session will not get dropped as the resync happens in a quick enough timeframe in order to keep it alive. The best way to determine what your line is doing is by either unlocking the firmware on your HG612 (I presume you have a HG612, not an ECI variant that is) or using an alternative VDSL2 modem. If your interleaving depth is greater than 1 on the downstream then that would explain your ping increase.
DLM is automated, it monitors your line errors, any disconnections, and such. You can't switch this off or alter this sadly. I too would love to be on fastpath at the sacrifice of some speed and a higher SNR (for a lower ping), but I have no options to do so.
I forgot to mention above, business customers of Infinity (like myself) are entitled to static IP addresses.

  • Mouse tracking speed decreased in Mavericks

I've noticed that after upgreading to Mavericks my Mouse tracking speed decreased in comparison to Mountain Lion. (I have tracking speed in preferences set to max)
Do you have any idea how to increase tracking speed? If not, Apple you should leave the range of tracking speed as it was.

I was experiencing the same problem after updating to Mavericks and as a graphic designer it was driving me absolutely CRAZY. After doing some research online I found this: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/34817/mouse-acceleration
It's a quick, free download and it completely solved my problem. Now I actually enjoy Mavericks.
Apple why do you keep changing things that work fine to begin with? This is iTunes 11 all over again.

  • MB990 and SL - Fan speed is not increasing automatically

    Hi Guys,
Two days ago I changed my macbook's hard drive to a bigger one and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
As soon as I installed the SL I noticed my computer was running hotter than the previous installation. Without doing anything, my macbook is reaching 75C (167F).. I have already checked the activity monitor and no process is using the CPU. Now I realized that the fan speed is not increasing automatically, it is always fixed at 2000rpm even if the temperature reaches 72C.. I have already tried a SMC reset but the problem persists..
Does anyone know a solution for this? The problem is the fan speed that is not increasing..
I'm having to use smcFanControl to control de fan speed manually. Before the fresh install I was using Snow Leopard updated from the Leopard and I was not facing this problem.
    Thanks a lot!

Hi there... i have the same problem. my temperature gets up to 75C with just one window open in safari or google chrome. I have downloaded smc Fancontrol but ...its not enough. have u solved this problem yet? i'm going in to the Genius Bar tomorrow to see if they can help.

  • Leopard Speed Decrease?

    Hi,
Have an APn. Haven't changed any settings on AP, but after installing leopard I can't break 11mbps.
I usual get 16-18Mbps via airport but no dice.
This is the weird part: If I plug my computer into the base station via ethernet I get normal speeds, but once I try using wireless it drops back down.
Multicast is set at 11, Channel Auto(but tried a few for measure), Robustness off, What gives? Is this a bug in leopard?

If someone out there can test a similar setup for me I would appreciate it.
    Using a
    1. G5 Dual 2.5 (10.5.1) with an Airport Extreme a/b/g card (using G).(it is the only client on network)
    2. Airport Extreme N Base Station with g compatible band.
    3. Cable Connection of 20Mbps down/2.5 Mbps up
    4. Using: http://ma.speedtest.rcn.net/ to confirm speeds(although you have to be an RCN subscriber) any respectable speed test will do.
    5. Try wireless and record speeds (mine hasn't broken 11Mbps, (although it is ranging from 4-9 on average)
    6. Plug in Computer directly to base station via ethernet and record speeds. (I'm getting my normal 20Mbps) averaging 16-19.
This computer was achieving normal speeds of 20mbps via WIRELESS prior to leopard. Now it only works via ethernet or is slow.
I have tried swaping a few kext files, preference files, etc, but really don't know where to start.
**I'm almost positive it is on the *computer side of things*, not the basestation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know if others are experiencing a speed decrease with leopard via wireless.(**you probably wouldn't know unless your going over 11-12Mbps, because that is where it seems capped.)
My MBP is already been in repair for a week (waiting on a part) and I do not want to jump through hoops for a false hardware issue when it is either a bug in 10.5.1 or a simple fix via terminal or some other firmware, firewall, extension, pref, etc..Thanks

  • CPU heats up on file copy/backup and fan speed does not increase

    Hi Friends,
I have been having issues with fan in my Dell Studio 1555. It has an ATI Radeon card and I had installed the proprietary catalyst driver as the open source driver is too noisy.
Recently, I noticed that on accessing my hard disk and copy files or running backup (luckybackup), the temperature shoots up from around 60 deg C (just using chrome) to 100 deg C when it would shut down itself. However, it seems like the fan speed does not increase with the increase in temperature to help it cool down.
I tried to get the fan speed details with "lm-sensors" but it would not show the fan speed. Here is the output of sensors:
    [user@domain]$ sensors
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +60.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    temp2: +59.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    temp3: +66.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
    Core 1: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Following the Arch wiki, I added acpi_enforce_resources=lax to kernel parameters but it did not help as well.
    Here is the main problem:
    1. CPU temperature shoots on accessing hard drive but fan speed does not increase - Any guide/direction to investigate would be really helpful.
    2. Sensors does not show the fan speed. Read about i8kutils, but couldn't figure out how to get it working with systemd. Any indicators here?

The fan was bad. I had to replace the fan. However, I have not been able to figure out how to see fan speed in sensors.

"How do I find that IP address because I put in the 192.168.1.8.."
That's not the router's IP address. Most likely it will be 192.168.1.1
    System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP should show it.

Hi Shaun...by default the second Firewall is the titled ipfw, this wall can be configured through the Terminal, there are some sites the give you the complete manual on how to set it up, but basically it showed its zany head during the Panther 10.3 install where upon users where not able to configure the System preferences' own firewall (everything was grayed or locked out and was unable to be opened) except for the terminal command, There was a big hooplah about it, but basically OS X contains two, the ipfw is a FreeBSD app. that is complex and its for concise configuration of ports. Im sure there is an old thread about here or in macrumors.
    http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/firewalls-ipfw.html
    http://seaotter.berkeley.edu/cab/mac-firewalls/
basically it could conflict with the main firewall, in my logs it showed that it denied the router's ip address, upon flushing of the rules it allowed it, while still maintaining the security of the main Firewall, Also in Leopard full bars mean Data rate to the router, unlike in Tiger it meant signal strength, so you can be connected to the router but not be connecting to the internet (been there),
in the Terminal command you may find the ipfw manual pages, to set precise port settings etc. the System prefs firewall is more UI friendly, but its like buying wholesale, instead of a precise item being purchased. So in your case its not blocking anything, because your main Fw is functioning already, but it is something good to know. like I posted before migrated accounts may carry over these configurations from the ipfw that worked in Tiger but not in Leopard because of the new sets of rules etc.

Recently I've noticed a decrease in speed, both in actual downloading of pages and as reported by the various speed testers. There is now a definate delay.
Yes, I know I'm a fair way from the exchange but originally when I was connected most, if not all, speed tests came in around the 1.9mb/s leve. Now most report 1.4 (even BT's own has dropped to around that level).

And that is when it gets a little bit suspect! I was connected to a new line so when did this other unidentified service get connected? Is it responsible for the slow down?
I'm trying to get a WiMax service connected so it might all become irrelevent (the phone line will go) but can BT just merrily piggy back other services onto a line with the resultant drop in performance.

Your connection speed is slower than before probably because your noise margin is at 9.2db whereas normal is about 6db. If you get noise margin down then speed will increase.
Are you connected to the master or test socket? Do you have other sockets in other rooms?
As your stats show a stable connection for the last 12 days i would if it was mine try 1 reset to se if noise margin would go back to 6db and if not then I would contact the mods and ask them to reset noise margin back to 6db. https://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951

  • Voice speed decreases when using ventrilo, LOTRO and so on.

    Hi,
I have been using vent for about 6 months on a bootcamp blackbook from 2006 with realtek audio drivers without any hazzle at all.
Now I bought a new macbook pro which have Cirrus Logic HD audio drivers. If I pull up normal XP sound recorder program I hear my voice in normal speed when testing microphone. IF I start ventrilo and enable outgoing voice communications and do a test recording on XP sound recorder program my voice speed is decreased. Luckily that program has an increaser of 100% in effects settings and that turns my speech recorded back to normal.
This also happens when I play Lord of the Rings Online without ventrilo on - My theory is that when there is two applications wanting to use the mic it decreases like it splits up as in Vent + (normal windows use) or LOTRO + (normal windows use).
This is very annoying as it makes voice chat impossible since its in ultra slow.
Please if anyone have any suggestions as to how to turn something off to make it only register 1 use of mic or any info u need let me know.
Tested with a headset with microphone and same deal (non-usb headset)

    Hello every1,
i have the same Issue in ventrilo. My voice is so slow when i talk. but when i installed Skype my voice sounds normal and i think its better than Ventrilo.
am using Skype instead of vent when i play Arena in wow. when i have Raids i get into Vent just to listen to my guild buddys.
