Speed drastically reduced?

For about a year now, I have been running off of Verizon FioS with 15/5mb (download/upload speed).  When I woke up today, I was suprised to see that my browser was running with minimal performance (pages loaded very slowly, videos off youtube took forever to buffer). At first I thought that maybe someone in the house was downloading something, as that usually cuts down my speed by half, but when I checked, nobody was on any computer. Next I thought it was some kind of virus so I let my antivirus scan my computer while I turned on the xbox for some video games. To my disappointment, all of my online games were running terribly slowly, and if I tried to communicate with people, the lag would get to my mic. This was obviously an issue with the internet and not a console.
I let it go for a couple hours, hoping that it would fix itself, and well, it did...for a moment. While I was browsing the web, my pages all of a sudden ran much quicker. I did a quick check on speedtest and found this result: Speedtest normal . So for a moment, I was happy. As I continued to browse through the web, my pages began to load very slowly once again. Not even five minutes later, this was the result of a Speedtest.
Should I be concerned, or do these speed "spikes" happen every so often? If it is unusual, then is there anything that I can do? Thank you for your time.

The spikes can happen every now and again if there is a router having problems or a major circuit went down for whatever reason, but it should never be consistent or happening on a regular basis. If it continues, ask Verizon to take a look at your circuit.

I'm running iOS 5 on my 3GS, and it runs fine, granted it's not as fast as a 4 or 4S, but it will still run fine.

  • Disk size is drastically reducing after the Dense restructure

After Clearing empty blocks the number of blocks are coming down by 10% showing that empty blocks were existing in the database. At this point in time total size of .PAG file remains constant (Before and after clearing empty blocks).
We did a restructure of database the number of blocks remained constant but the .PAG file has drastically reduced to less than 50%.
We are trying to understand why would the 10% block reduction is casuing the disk size reduction by 50%.
    Thanks for your inputs!
    Edited by: user3942062 on Mar 14, 2013 3:31 AM

The .pag file contains free space, not just that left behind by CLEARBLOCK EMPTY but also where blocks have been modified and no longer fit back into their original slot (so Essbase has to expand the .pag file to fit them back somewhere else). For example, if a block is taking up 2K on disk but you then load additional data, the block's footprint on disk may increase to 3K. Essbase can't fit it back into its original 2K location, so it leaves that 2K chunk of the .pag file empty (at least for the time being) and finds 3K elsewhere.
Only restructuring the database physically releases this space.

  • Web page browsing speed drastically slowing down

I purchased a 13 inch mac book pro in December. Since day one, I have had a problem with my web page browsing speed drastically slowing down. These crippling slow down periods are completely random. They can start any time, and last from any amount of time. from minutes to hours.
95% of the time any attempt to load a page end in a time out. The other 5% takes no less then 90 seconds to load the simplest of pages. I have this problem no matter what browser I use (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera). What is driving me nuts is other applications work fine when browsing slows down. Skype, IM clients, multi-player games all work great, but web pages will not load. When I ping a website, my latency returns are perfectly normal. I can use Telnet and SSH with no problem.
This has become such a problem that I can not depend on using OS X day to day. I used boot camp to setup a windows partition and installed win 7. Using my win 7 install everything runs perfectly, I have had zero slow down!
I've done some searching and found numerous posts with similar problems. Ive read and followed the advice that I found, but I've had no success is fixing this.
I have had this problem on 6 different wireless networks. Each time this problem has come into play, my windows install performs flawlessly. This really makes me belive this is a software problem. Not hardware / ISP.
I see alot of post blaming default ISP DNS servers, just to let everyone know I use google's open DNS on my home network.
I also have changed the DNS settings in OS X
All other machines on my home network have zero problems!
Sending files between my laptop and other machines on my network works perfectly.
I have found a few posts / guides for using OnyX, none of them have worked for me
I have to be missing some simple thing here, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the welcome and the quick response Glynn
I rebooted into OS X as soon as I read your response. Web pages would not load.
    I followed your instructions.
    The Airport Light was green.
I went ahead and hit assist me and ran the diag tool. According to the tool my internet connection is working correctly.
Sadly the problem persists and web pages still will not load in all four browsers.
I ran a ping to google.com and responses were well under 45 ms.

  • Internet speed suddenly and drastically reduced through TWO different routers (EA6500 & E2500)

I'm definitely experiencing a bizarre problem at the moment with internet speed (both wired and wireless) through my EA6500 which began suddenly two days ago.  The modem directly into the computer continues to yield the normal speeds (about 3.5 Mbps down and 1 up) each time I connect it directly, but putting the router into the equation cuts it to around 0.5 Mbps down and 0.05 up, though the speeds do tend to vary quite a bit.  I just assumed that the router was defective, so I grabbed my older and perfectly operational E2500 to put back in its place, but the results were exactly the same.  I went through all of the troubleshooting with the cable company up through the modem, and again, the modem continues to deliver the normal speeds directly to the PC.  I also swapped all of the network cables around to verify that they're all good, so that's not an issue either, and the firmware on both routers is current.  While certainly possible, I have a hard time believing that both routers just happen to be bad at the same time, and I haven't made any changes in the last few days to the network configuration, settings or even the software and setings on my PC.  This truly is a baffling problem, and I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on the matter.  Thanks.

That interesting the MTU being 1280. That is the typical MTU of an IPv6 tunnel. Is IPv6 enabled on the router? Maybe your ISP has implemented IPv6.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Boot Camp Internet Speed Drastically Different From OSX Speeds

I'm running windows 7 in BootCamp on a Mac Air (Early 2014); in BootCamp I am averaging 5M/10M. That's right for some reason my download is slower than my upload on the windows side.
On the OSX side I average 80M/15M.
    These are both wireless numbers.
As you can see this is a drastic difference.
How can I take full advantage of my internet speeds on the windows side?
I have installed the BootCamp 5.1.5640 Drivers 3 or 4 times now per Apple's website however this has not changed my results. I have also disabled auto updates in windows as I know that can sometimes overwrite the drivers from Apple.
Any assistance or suggestions would be great!

This could be all sorts of things but i am inclined to have the same suspicion of others here which is that your ISP is messing with your bandwidth.
In the UK pretty much every ISP shapes traffic, i've ended up buying a VPN internet service to get around this permanently (this appears as encrypted traffic over the shttp port to your ISP) this is the only way i've managed to get consistent speed with everything.
The only thing this doesn't protect against is if you're ISP is throttling your entire connection - they usually only do this if you start to break your monthly bandwidth limits.
Anyway like i said this might not be the case at all... however you can get free VPN trials to test this, this one provides trials on request (they are manually initiated so be patient): http://www.yourprivatevpn.com/

  • 3gs iPod loudness level drastically reduced

Updated my phone to 4.1...guess what!!! I've got no problems with passcode, calendar or hanging problem.
.....But iPod volume has reduced a lot.....I scroll down the volume half way and music is almost MUTE, put it to MAX,and I can barely listen to the music...I am pretty furious about this one
I did everything possible ...checked the music aac format...restored the phone to factory settings...even reduced the data stored on the phone. Bought the iPhone few months back, updated all the way upto 4.0.2..and faced no problems ...the music loudness level was a lot and sound clear ...after updating to 4.1 in one short morning , loudness level reduced...a lot...even at 100% charge.... Please ....Help me out...I don't care even if at the end of the day I can't call or surf....but I love my iPod ..it's one of the main reasons why I bought the phone in the first place...hope to get your reply soon....yes..and my headphones are perfectly fine...I tried listening with it through my Sony Walkman ...I am pretty sure it is a firmware problem ...because the remember listening to iPod morning before updating and the volume level was off the roof and clear. Hope to get your suggestions soon APPLE...

  • Internet Speed drastically slower...Why???

Hello all. I have an iBook G4 with OS X 10.4.11 and over the last couple months, while using the internet on Safari, I am noticing distinct slow down in internet performance. Whether surfing the net, checking email, watching a video, etc. the speed of the computer or internet seem to be much slower than it used to be. In fact, a lot of the time, I'll click on the link for a page, and Safari just freezes and nothing loads. About 30-60 secs later it will come up empty with a failed to open page that says, Safari can't find the server!? This happens about half the time I try to open a page. This has virtually never happened in the entire 4 years prior until recently, and overall speed while on the internet seems to be about 20-40% slower than it has been the entire time I've owned my laptop!
There is nothing wrong otherwise, I have not switched internet providers, haven't had anything wrong with the cpu otherwise, haven't installed any new software or hardware, etc., and all the other cpu's in my place work just fine. I have ATT 6mbps internet which is supposed to be their faster service and it works just fine on my two other pc desktops, but for some reason, my G4 laptop has just been acting weird over the last 6months to a year. I have NO idea how or why this could be happening and was wondering if anyone had some ideas or suggestions for me on how to solve this or get my speed back up to par. I feel like I'm using dial-up half the time when I'm paying for fast DSL. And the fact that none of the other cpu's are acting this way or going slower makes me wonder if something is wrong with my trusty G4. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried resetting Safari? Go to Safari menu items from the drop down and click 'Reset Safari'. Alternately you could go to Safari preferences and empty the cache and delete all cookies. Those temporary internet files build up and can really slow down your browsing.
I would also make sure that you have the latest updates for your OS. Open system preferences and click on 'Software Update' and install the updates.
You should also repair Disk Permissions once a week. Open Disk Utility in the utilities folder located in Applications on your hard drive. Select your hard drive from the list of volumes on the left, then click 'repair permissions'.
Those are are good first steps and easy items to check.
    Good Luck!

  • Images pasted into mail from photoshop are drastically reduced in size.

At work, I am constantly sending previews of artwork through email. I CmdShiftC in Photoshop to copy merged (this essentially takes a screen shot of your current selection in a Photoshop document, then I Cmd+V to paste it into mail.
I have been doing this exact process for over a year now, it works every time, the images are pasted at actual size and are not modified in any way regardless of how huge they were.
This morning they suddenly started showing up as dinky, useless thumbnails.
There is no option in mail I can find to control this, and the multitude of other posts in this forum about the same complaint mention a little popup in the bottom right when you have an attached image. I do not have this popup, there is nothing in the bottom right of my window.
Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?

it's not a popup, it's a little scroll button. and you should be getting it when you attach images. however, in my experience, sometimes this button doesn't show up for whatever reason. the following method works for me when I run into this problem (which happens with some regularity btw). start a new blank outgoing message and attach an image to it. don't do it from photoshop. just drag some large image from finder to the message composition window. hopefully, the scroll button will show up. adjust it to "actual size" and close that message composition window. next time you attach an image to a measge it will use the same setting to display the image, i.e. 'actual size".

  • Battery drastically reduced after hd substitution with a ssd

Recently i substituited my hd with a ssd Samsug 840 series 250GB. I have a MacBook Pro 13" mid2010. I notice a time reduction of my battery. can it be due to the ssd?
    ps
    i enabled trim

I replaced my HDD with S840 Pro last week and having the same issue (MBP mid09). I've tried to reset PRAM and SMC but nothing helped. It might be SSD firmware issue as several people solve the same kind of issue by downgrading or upgrading SSD firmware (Crucial, ... but not Samsung)
Have you resolved the issue meanwhile?

  • Download speed (broadband) reduced this week

I am 1mb broadband user. I have not had any problems downloading tunes or playing previews, until recently.
I am now finding that downloading is taking as long as dial-up. Also, when playing previews, it keeps getting interrupted, with the message 'Network stalled - rebuffering stream' and this happens about 4 times with the preview.
Could this be a firewall probelm, or any other tips on what settings I should be checking?

Seeing a similar thing here.  I used to get over 50Mbps download but now I'm getting 40 while being on Infinity 2:
    1. Product name:
    BT Home Hub
    2. Serial number:
    +06xxxx+NQ3335xxxx
    3. Firmware version:
Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.173.1.6 (Type A) Last updated 29/04/14
    4. Board version:
    BT Hub 5A
    5. VDSL uptime:
    6 days, 13:22:51
    6. Data rate:
    7025 / 43430
    7. Maximum data rate:
    7183 / 54397
    8. Noise margin:
    6.1 / 5.8
    9. Line attenuation:
    0.0 / 18.0
    10. Signal attenuation:
    0.0 / 17.6
    11. Data sent/received:
    148.9 MB / 3.9 GB
    12. Broadband username:
    [email protected]
    13. BT Wi-fi:
    Yes
Having read other posts I'm guesiing it may be due to uptake of Infinity by other users sharing the same cabinet as me.  I keep holding out for things to get better but it may be time to flag it up as a problem

  • Slow motion clips drastically reduce editing performance

I wondered why one project was slower than a similar sized other project (20 min). I moved the project cursor from the end of the project systemmatically towards the start. As I moved it, response got slower and slower. This was the clue. I started to set 50% clips back to 100% as I went backwards through the project and performace rapidly increased. I had both sound and video tracks in the project. Therefore, the more slow motion clips you use the slower editing will become as you progress towards the start of your project.

Did they import as a single long clip?
I would recommend dragging the long DV clip into MPEG Streamclip (a free app from Squared 5).
You can drag the long clip into MPEG Streamclip and divide the long clip into multiple shorter clips. You might divide it into logical events (all clips shot on the same day) or you could make a new clip every time record/pause button is pressed.
Move the playhead to the in point and press I, move the playhead to the Out point and press O. Then File/Export to DV. Repeat until you have all the clips.
Hint: If you know the date and time the clips were shot, give the files a name in the form clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext where hh is hours in 24 hour time and ext is the current file extension (in your case DV).
Then use FILE/IMPORT/Movies... to import into iMovie as separate events.
That should give you good performance.
