Speed drops using Airport extreme on ADSL2+ Connection

Hi, I figure when I connect through my AEBS (2m distance to G5) I loose a lot of speed compared to the full speed of 18M down and 1M up when I connect my G5 direct with Ethernet Cable to my modem. The Internet provider Company told me that I have to uncheck the "send Echo" option in the PPPoE settings and that works fine without the AEBS.
I just don´t find the option to uncheck this in the Airport Admin Program.
Any Ideas? Thanks a lot for your help in advance!

Hi Macfink. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I tried with your settings but no recognizable speed enhancements showed. Stll using the AEBS I get about 150KB/sec down speed compared to 2MB/sec connecting directly to my modem via Ethernet cable. As it seems the problem is within the PPPoE settings. When I check or uncheck the option "send PPP echo packets" (translated from my german OS) the speed changes dramatically. And this is excactly what my network provider told me to do. The only problem is that in the AEBS configuration I cannot find any option like this. I went through many forums already, maybe I´ll spend the 50$ for a call to Apple one day, possibly to hear that there is no solution to this issue.
Thanks, Robert

No, the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have any type of audio output.
Are you thinking of the AirPort Express which does have an audio output?

  • Drastic speed drop using AirPort

I have an AirPort Extreme that's about 3 weeks old and another from a couple years ago (dome style). Both exhibit the same problem, though the new one shows it much more often. After some period of time of use (or inactivity) of 10 - 20 minutes my internet speed drops from 4 Mb/s to 0.5 Mb/s. The only way to get the speed back is to reboot the AirPort. I check the speed using speedtest.net. Not only is the speed slower, but many web pages simply refuse to load and Mail never finishes fetching headers. Outgoing mail won't send. Also, I always have 4 bars of signal strength even when this happens.
I've talked to my ISP while it's happening and they confirm a 4 Mb/s speed, but said my "router was throwing back a lot of strange data". I could ask for more details if I knew what to ask about. I'm using a wireless internet (not satellite, but line of sight to a tower), but I don't know what that would have to do with this.
Anything else I can check? Any tools that would help expose the problem?

    Oops, wrong forum!

  • HP Deskjet 3550 cannot print using Airport Extreme via USB connection on Windows 7 64 bits

Product Name and Number: HP Deskjet 3550 Inkjet Printer
Operating System installed: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits
    Error message: None
Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred: Setting up HP printer using Airport Utility to add a new printer and installed Bonjour Print Wizard.
Problem: My printer is already set up using Airport Utility. When I print something, the printer doesn't do anything. Is there something I haven't done lately in order to get this printer working using my wifi router?
Suggestion #1: Are the print jobs getting stuck in the print queue? You can check this by clicking on the printer icon in your task tray by the clock.
Error Message #1: Yes, the print job got stuck in the print queue, but the moment, it disappeared from the print queue and the printer doesn't print at all. This is frustrating.
Suggestion #2: Does the printer work as expected if you connect it directly to the PC via USB?
Error Message #2: Yes, the printer works if I connect it directly to my PC via USB, but I don't understand why it wouldn't work with the wifi router, though.
Suggestion #3: This has to do with the way the router handles the connection to the printer. I found another thread, regarding this issue, and it has some information that may help resolve it.

If that does not help, I would recommend posting on the Apple forums, as they may have more expertise with the router's abilities:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
Error Message #3: After clicking on the first link that you posted, it was very helpful, but the printer couldn't print completely and somehow it would stop at the quarter of a paper. It looks incomplete when I took it out from my printer. It does that every time.

    UPDATE!
Problem solved!  So this is just a followup in case someone else ever stumbles into these boards with the same or similar problems as mine, that is, trying to run an HP Deskjet D1500 series printer [mine's a D1520] on an Airport Extreme wifi router's USB port as a network printer [with the Airport Extreme controlled by an ancient G4 PowerMac Quicksilver currently running OS X 10.4.11).
Although it probably SHOULDN'T matter, since this type of printer works fine with just the Tricolor cartridge as shipped when hooked up directly to a computer's USB port, on a hunch I got a black HP cartridge (that's a type 21, not type 22 as I had earlier said), slapped it in, tried a test page, and all's well.  So, we can call off the technoid hounds.  Everything running perfectly.
I hope this message in a bottle may help someone else out there some day soon who may be scratching his or her head with a similar stumper.  And just to recap those important Windows printer settings, they are:
    * [Printer Properties--> Ports--> Add New Port...] "Standard TCP/IP Port"
    * [Configure Port] IP Address "10.0.1.1" and Port "9100"
    Best of luck!

  • Using airport extreme card to connect iPhone to internet of mac ?

Is it possible to use a mac as wireless"base-station" for a iPhone by using an airport extreme card , if the mac is connected only by wire?
I created a network on my mac and my iPhone is connected to it, but it says the network is not connected to internet.
So can I connect the airport extreme card on my mac to the ethernet of my mac by changing the network settings on my mac?

  • Using Airport Extreme wireless to connect wired devices

    Hello,
I am renting an apartment which includes wireless internet access.  The only problem is I have several devices which I do not have wireless adapters for (tv, xbox).  I have an airport extreme (A 1408) which I would like to use to connect to my landlord's wireless and provide wired internet access to the non-wireless devices.  Is this possible?  My landlord has a belkin router, so extending the network is not possible.
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, the Ethernet ports are only active when the Extreme "extends" a wireless network.....but it is not compatible with a Belkin product for this purpose.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express can be configured to "join" a wireless network and provide an Ethernet signal to the AirPort Extreme.
Frankly, this is an "iffy" type of setup that will require that you know exactly what type of wireless security setttings the Belkin router is using, so the Express will join the network correctly.
To further complicate things, the newer versions of AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion and Lion do not lend themselves well to this type of setup. You will need to use an older 5.x version of AirPort Utility for this type of configuration.
If you decide to try an AirPort Express, it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance in case things do not work out as hoped.

  • Connection speed problem with airport extreme

Hi, I´m using airport extreme and two airport express elements for best possible WLAN. It worked for a while, but from one day to another the connection speed from my apple device I wanted to connect became unrealisticcally slow. I have a 100 mb connection and the device, which are very close to the airports get below1 mb connection which make my work nearly impossible.
What is your idea, can you please help me ?
    regards, jky

    Hi-
    On the slow machine...
Go into SystemPreferences>Network...look in on the settings.
If there are IP addresses listed under "DNS Server", remove them.
    Apply, Save...
    Test again.
    Things better? Good.
    No better?
Put the IP address of your ExtremeAirport (usually 10.1.0.1, but check it).
If in doubt? Restart (power cycle) all your network devices, including the computers.

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....
    1) Connect the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Download and install Bonjour Print Services for Windows on the PC

  • Re : Apple TV doesn't connect to a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service using Airport Extreme

Hi, using Airport Extreme (Airport Utility version 6.3.2, Internet :DHCP, Router mode : Off (Bridge)) with a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet service. My Desktop (iMac), Macbook,iPhone,iPad join the Airport Extreme Wirelessi network (WPA/WPA2 Personal) easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. However, in case of Apple TV (2nd Generation Software : 6.0.2 (6646.81.1)), it connects the Airport Extreme W-Fi network easily but no Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. Even using the Ethernet connection of the said Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service directly to the Apple TV, no internet network connects. Please help.

There is no way you can handle login details with the ATV and there is probably no way you can do it with extreme in router mode either.. If you need to use a login name and password via a html screen then that is impossible in a device without html.
But your newest addition confuses me.
A slight correction in the question : the Broadband Internet Service isn't Wireless, but having Ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme.
So how do your iphones pop up a login page.
easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options.
The alternative method is to use a computer .. login to your service and use ICS through the computer to the ATV..

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • My airport extreme will not connect to the Internet

My airport extreme will not connect to my toshiba router. I connected it to my office internet this morning but when I hooked it up at home it simply will not connect. I have tried resetting all the settings and have had no luck. It did work once upon a time. I currently have my airport express hooked up so I know there is connectivity.

I could never figure it out after trying everything I could and going to the genius bar I ended up just purchasing another extreme.  The really funny thing is that I can set up a network between the two and it works fine.  I am using it at work now with out any problems so I guess there is really no loss :-?

  • How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal?

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:
Controlling access to your wireless network
A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

  • How to share files using airport extreme?

how can i share files between 2 computers connected to a wifi using airport extreme?

Suggest that you enable File Sharing on both computers. Assuming that you have Macs....
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Sharing
Enter a check mark next to File Sharing
Do this on both Macs. Then you will be able to access files one one Mac from the other Mac
If you have an AirPort Extreme 802.11n, it is also possible to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the Extreme. Computers will be able to access files on this "shared" drive.

  • Can you use airport extreme as a bridge to netgear wdnr4500 wireless router

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.
This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.
