Speed ease in

Hi all - I have a 30 fps clip that I have sent to motion and I want to start the speed off at 50% and then ease it up very quickly to 100%. I know how to key frame this in FCP, but I've always found it sort of rudimentary. Is there a behavior in Motion 3 that allows this kind of manipulation (speed up or slow down a clip at various points...)?
Thanks -

Yes, it's called the Set Speed behavior, in the Retiming category.

  • AE CC 2014 can't find Quicktime Components after latest FCX upgrade

    Hi there,
I am in a pretty big trouble. After installing AE CC 2014 (plus premiere, media encoder and so on) everything was just fine and worked flawlessly. Then I upgraded FCX and its new ProRes codecs and now none of the above mentioned softwares seem to work, reporting that there are no quicktime components installed in my system.
Actually the quicktime components are there since I can play save and export quicktime mov.s with FCX, quicktime, MpegStreamclip and so on as I used to do before the upgrade. Only Adobe CCs 2014 don't work.
I then donwloaded the components straight from Apple support site, reinstalled them but it didn't work; I disinstalled and reinstalled Adobe CC softwares and nope... neither this way it worked.
    Can you guys help me?
It would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers

The recent update to FCP X does, in fact, add a new Pro Res format, called Pro Res 4444 XQ.  It is (apparently) the highest clarity Prores codec released to date, aimed squarely at high end broadcast and cinema professionals.  Arri has announced that their new Alexa cameras will all support the new format.
    The press release says:
ProRes 4444 XQ has a higher target data rate of 500Mbps that makes it the ideal choice for post production that requires visual effects processing or extreme colour grading.
“ProRes 4444 XQ is a fantastic choice for high-end mastering and archiving,” added Henning Rädlein, Arri’s head of Digital Workflow Solutions. “ProRes 4444 XQ offers 12-bit RGB encoding with a low compression ratio of 1:4.5 that maintains the superior tonal range of Log C, while providing the speed, ease of use and familiarity of ProRes.
You can just install the codecs from this update:
    ProApps Codecs v1.0.5
But they are automatically installed with the latest updates to FCPX, Compressor and Motion.  As far as I can see, the new codec is only available in Compressor X - I can't seem to access it through any other software, including After Effects, Media Encoder or legacy Apple software.
That said, I have the updates installed on the machine I'm using and don't seem to have any other Quicktime issues, other than no access to the new ProRes format.  Sorry I can't offer more help.

  • What is the best way to add a blog to a flash site?

I am just about wrapping up the construction of my site and I am left with my last small project--a blog.  I would like the site and the blog to run on the same parent site and to be as uniform as possible.  What would be the best way to do this?  I am also looking for RSS and Facebook "Like" functionality as well.  Some things to consider would be speed, ease of use, etc.
Here is what I was thinking:
    1) I can create the blog in html, but I would like the navigation from within the SWF to be functional as well.  Is there a way to create links in an html doc to navigate to a specific page within a SWF?  I know how to link outside an SWF.  By doing this, I think I could recreate the navigation with XML. If so, I believe I can accomplish my other goals.
    2) The other option I was thinking of would be to create the blog within the SWF itself.  If I were to do this, is there any way to inlcude RSS, within the SWF?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I am still quite new to development so I figured I would get some "best practices" insight prior to starting.
I published the site if it is of any assistance: http://stephenpappasphoto.com/
    Thanks,
    -SP

    1) You can use frame anchors to link to particular labeled frames in a swf.  I've never used them, but it is supposed to work.  You assign the frame label and then designate it to be an Anchor in the Label type drop down in the Properties panel.
    2) RSS is basically just XML by a different name, which Flash can process directly.  Here's a link to a tutorial that might help...

  • Can Final Cut Pro edit MPEG?

    Hello,
I work with HD MPEG files. However, to edit them in FCP is a painstaking task. I must always convert all the video files to .DV to speed up the editing/rendering process. In turn, I am forced to sacrifice video quality. Is there some way that I can set a project's format to .MPEG so that real time playback and rendering are just as quick as .DV files?
    I appreciate any help.
    -David
    Message was edited by: surmise

What format would you suggest for importing and editing videos in FCP to maximize editing speed/ease.
    Anything other than .dv.
There is a long list of compatible formats supported by FCP in the manuals and on the marketing pages at ahttp://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/
You will not find .dv on that list. Which brings up a question you need to answer for yourself (but not for us because the answer is not relevant to this dialog), who told you to use .dv? They were terribly misinformed.

  • Happy with everything except for the smell!

I'm very happy with my new T430 (speed, ease of set up, wireless, etc.) with one HUGE exception which is the smell.  Like other ThinkPad users have reported, I have noted a plastic, chemical smell that emits from the left side vents. It smells fainly like band aids to me, and is much stronger if you sniff the air coming out of the vents.   I've had the computer for almost a month now and used it several times a week, for several hours at a time, and it doesn't appear to be abating.  To the degree it is, it's also possible that I am just getting used to it.  I sent it to the Lenovo Service Center and they told me that they just didn't note a smell.   The customer service person who contacted me didn't know if someone had opened it or not to see whether a wire or a plastic component was getting overheated.  I'm really pleased with everything else, so I'm bummed at this point to have this problem.  I'm expecting to keep this computer for several years (which is why I purchased a Lenovo,) but when it comes time to replace, I may have to look at other brands!  Again, in all other ways it's terrific, so I'll have to see how it goes.

Put it outside (somewhere safe and away from liquids) and have it run a burnin (full CPU/GPU power) overnight. Should clear out most of the smell.

  • Script needed for creating layers in Indesign.

Ok, this sounds simple and im sure it is.
Im currently getting all WEBSITE designs produced by our creative department in Indesign (speed, ease, lack of training whatever! etc etc)
Im currently layering these elements up manually which is OK, but im sure somebody knows of a script somewhere!!!,
Ive got a SUPERB script that when the indesign file IS LAYERED I can make it a photoshop PSD thats ALL smart objects etc so Its perfect for web psds. Its amazing, if i can find a script that layers the Indesign document as well PRIOR TO RUNNING THE OTHER SCRIPT, I can quite literally do nothing and just watch the machine do the work!!
I look forward to your replies!!
    Paul

    Hi Vamitul
Im sure its very simple but I never seem to be able to find the answer!!, basically if you have 1 page with say 40 text fields and 40 pictures on there, it would through default create it all on 1 layer which is the standard practice and how Indesign has always worked.
Once I have had the design approved thats been created in Indesign I need to get each element on a seperate layer Ie 80 layers. I currently do this manually! (So the next action I do is use a script I have that turns it into a LAYERED.psd).
I simply want to have a script which puts each element on a seperate layer.
Help me Vamitul, I get a good feeling about you!, you could be my saviour!

  • Best way to access Aperture Library?

I have a MacPro [2008, 2.66ghz, 1.33ghzbus; 17G ram] w. 4 bays- a 1T drive in one bay is allocated to Aperture and my startup main drive is 1T and has 600G empty. I want speed & ease of access to my Library & so far have found that because it's on another internal drive, it's not all that speedy.
Would I benefit from moving the Library to the Startup Drive and working with and accessing it from there or keeping it on the other drive and doing something else? What would be a good way to go [the Library is now at 600G but contains lots of dups so I'm working my way thru cleaning it up and expect it'll be closer to 400G when through if not less]

On using referenced masters, Here's what you do -
Instead of trying to copy them and maintain the folder structure in the finder yourself... Use the normal old aperture import window.
Where it says "store files in the aperture library" - change it to a folder that you want to contain all your RAWS, and then use the "subfolder" dropdown to choose a subfolder structure. Aperture will automatically load the raws into a folder structure for you... Thus you will never need to worry about it, and you can use the same workflow as you would if you were storing the RAWs in the library.
I use "project name/" because I shoot weddings and never shoot more than 9999 shots per project.
This way when It is time to archive a project, it is easy for me to move the Masters offline to an archive drive, but keep the previews and the library online for me to look at if needed.
If you wanted to replicate iphoto's folder structure, you could do that too - just set up the subfolder structure to be "year/month/day".
It's very powerful... and seamless as well.

  • Cloning a drive and mirror backup techniques

    Hi all,
I have configured my new Mac Pro and loaded new apps and am at a point now where I want to put together a 'backup plan' for backing up work files and a clone drive of my OS/apps drive. I currently have my OS/apps drive (the orig 320GB) in bay #1.
My 'work files' drive is a seagate 500GB in bay #2. I am not familiar with 'mirror backup' technologies but an ideal backup plan for me would be to have a drive in bay #3 that automatically mirrors anything I do on my 'work' drive in bay #2.
Can anyone help me out with suggestions to accomplish this or have a suggestion on a different backup plan? I also would like to have a clone OS/apps drive in bay #4 in case my main OS/apps drive should go down. Again, an ideal situation in this instance would be that any updates or app adds that I make on drive #1 would automatically be mirrored on clone drive #4. Is there a way to accomplish this without having a RAID array and drives? Also, is there a way to make a clone of my up to date OS/apps drive in bay #1 on a drive in bay #4 without having to load all the software and OS again?
Thanks in advance for any input.
I have found this forum invaluable, especially since upgrading to Mac Pro.
As I was contemplating a while back on the upgrade and asked in this forum
for input on moving to the 24" iMac (which is a great machine) vs. the Mac Pro, someone suggested that the iMac may be more cost effective in the short term but the Mac Pro would ultimately be the most cost effective in terms of expandability. I am so glad I went with the Mac Pro.
    Best,
    Dennis

If you stay on the small side 1 or 2 external FW800 or eSATA drives work rather well. If you start having 5 or 10 1 - 15 TB hard drives then the mentioned sled type external drives are nice. I have really too many external drive cases. I finally purchased a 4 drive Sonnet eSATA, FW800/400 & USB2 interfaces which requires only 1 cable for any of the 4 types of connections & have easy to change hot-swap drive sleds.
Drive makers usually have s Server class hard drive for the best reliability. Seagate's are called their ES2 line of drives. They come in sizes up to 1 TB. Their Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB Hard Drives still have a 5 year warranty, but are not rated for 24/7 use.
FW800 is an easier to use external drive connector scheme. And as others have mentioned, a back-up can be done slowly in the back ground so does speed really matter. I do my backups to both internal & external drives. Internal for speed & ease. Then external for safety. If you really have information that could cost you a lot of lost time, effort &/or many then an off-site back copy is very important. This could be kept at your parent's, kid's, brother's, sister's, relative's, friend's or storage off-site storage unit.
My son uses SuperDuper for his clones. I use CarbonCopyCloner most of the time, but I also have a copy of SuperDuper. This is what I use to copy my working system to a new drive, then I keep up the old drive as my backup system. All you have to do is keep the files up to date, or reclone them when there is enough changes made. I like to do the updating & then use the system to be sure that it works way of doing things.
the beauty of all of this is that there are enough different ways that you can find 1, 2 or more of them to meet your current or future needs. As someone else said what works for him, may not work for you.

  • Java Or Fortran ?

Hello all master...i have one question. I need to build an application and it is about modeling for landslide. So i need some advice from you all. Which one between java or fortran is suitable as programming language for my project. For example software is [CHASM Software|http://chasm.info/] . Is java suitable as my project programming language ? This is because, i never learn about fortran before this and i also has some experience using java. For second question why scientist always use fortran ? Which is power between both of them ?
Thanks. I hope someone will help me.

    carnado,
I guess I'd be thinking FORTRAN for the engineering stuff, and Java for all the "application stuff".
    * Yes, you can produce .dll/.so's in Fortran and call them from Java via RMI. So you get the best of both worlds... speed/ease of calcs; and ease of "app development".
    * Hard core engineers still totally dig fortran, as they should. It's a specialised language which was designed to suit them to a tee. There's a massive existing investment in how to do "heaving lifting" in fortran... much of which doesn't translate. Lots of Holywood's CGI tools are still written in fortran... Hmmm... I wonder why?... Could It Be Because It Works?
    * Java is streets ahead in the "applications" space.... Swing, Servlets, JSP, WebServices... even underlying stuff like JDBC and LDAP/ActiveDirectories... and there's plenty of smart folks out there on the employment lines (more every day ;-( ) with experience in the java space.
    * I hate to admit it but C# is still way out in front for fat graphical clients.
    * The downside is that programmers who are competent in both Fortran, Java and C# are as rare as chickens lips... You'll probably be looking at a tripolar development team (who hate each other with religious passion)... trick is to find a team-leader with a bit of knowledge of all worlds, but not too much... and equip him a BIG stick, and an endless box of jelly donuts ;-)
    Cheers. Keith.

  • Where is the "Express" in FC Express?

I've used a PC for 15 years now, and was a Pinnacle Studio user for the last several years. Recently they added a Green Screen effect to STUDIO and it was "impossibly easy" <g> to do green screen in that product.
I've recently (5 months) started using FC Express to edit my video do to a number of reliability issues with STUDIO.
I also have used Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements.
What I find ironic is that FC Express is seemingly ignoring the ease-of-use features in other Express or express-like product.
Take green screen for example--in FC Express I read several articles on-line on how to do a chroma key effect/green screen effect. 99 clicks and adjustments and several hours later, I had a somewhat poor result.
I went back to STUDIO and in 15 minutes I had the entire sequence finished and much better quality that in FC Express.
My question and point is, when is Apple going to realize that Express users may be people who want more than iMovie offers, and yet also want to do a semi-profressional job of editing. When is Apple going to add ease-of-use functions to Express? I mean, I want to use Express and then perhaps jump into FC Pro for more complicated or profressional stuff--but Express should have at least 5 or 6 ease-of-user features built-into it.
    Green Screen
    Picture-in-picture
    Scene Detection (improved)
    Ken Burns Effect
    I'm sure there's a couple more I'm forgetting--but you get my point.
There are some of us that want more than iMovie can produce, but don't want the high-end controls. In otherwords, we want Cessna not a Space Shuttle navigation system.

    Hi Bob,
Sorry to hear of your problems.
I am quite new to FCE HD and have not done any Green Screen but I have done Blue Screen using a large bedsheet costing £3 at the local market!
The results were excellent and took little more than seconds to set up in FCE. (I did use the Green/Blue Screen filter rather than the Chromakey one).
The speed, ease of use and finished product were all superior to previous attempts in Premiere 6.5.
Picture in picture and the workaround for auto scene detection are also a doddle.
For PiP just use the Scale Setting in Motion (having put the small picture in Video Track 2) to set to the required size in the Canvas and drag the resultant small image to the desired position. I have just done a test one and it literally only took a few seconds and played back instantly without rendering.
If you want to do Ken Burns Effects try this simple tutorial from Tom Wolsky's book - "Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop".

  • Coming back to Arch

I stopped using Arch about a year ago, not due to any problem I had with Arch. Been running Ubuntu ever since does what I need.
Then I installed Virtualbox, thought I would load up Arch as a virtual machine and suddenly remembered all the good things about Arch.. its speed, ease of use, and flexibility, not too mention it looked damn good.
After reading Whitson Gordon's article about Arch on lifehacker I knew I had to reinstall it.
Installed and was up and running in not time.
Now for some reason which is beyond me my monitor is not running at the resolution I have on my virtual machine and frankly I am stumped.
Still love Arch but maybe my system is getting old, or maybe I am!
Could you send Cactus over to fix it for me?

I'm running a small IT company based 100% on GNU/Linux and FOSS: http://www.microlinux.fr. The company provides solutions for small town halls, public libraries, schools, small companies and the likes, and my job mainly consists of replacing crappy Windows networks by crispy Linux networks. Sometimes, I also do mixed setups, though I only integrate existing Windows machines into a network (that is, I never do fresh Windows installs). Besides that, I also do some training on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Oracle, and I published two printed books about Linux (search "kiki novak" on amazon.fr if you're curious).
My first contact with Linux was back in 2001, when I installed Slackware 7.1. Over the years, I've been using nearly every distro under the sun. From time to time, I gave Arch a spin, and looking back, my forum inscription here dates back to 2005. Until now, I'd say I really liked Arch's KISS approach, which is probably due to my Slackware beginnings. There was only the odd little problem here or there that prevented me from using it in a production environment. But I've always got the feeling that Arch "almost" did the job, and I promised myself to come back from time to time just to check it out again. Right now, my company works mainly with CentOS (a Red Hat Enterprise Linux clone).
I'm also running a few production servers on CentOS, and I recently saw that my dedicated server provider (OVH France) now also offers Arch as an "expert" distro. I even remember sending them a mail a few years back and asking them if they could include Arch in their distribution list. At the time, they didn't seem to like the idea. This has been some sort of showstopper for me, since I like the idea of using one single distribution on servers as well as on the desktop. (Some basic laziness maybe )
Arch seems very mature now, and a glance on the wiki leaves me impressed by the sheer wealth and quality of the documentation. I even bought the printed Arch Linux Handbook, which is only slightly outdated. Right now, I'm wading through the documentation and fiddling with Arch on a few sandbox machines. I have a 60+ items checklist, and if things go well (which I have a vague feeling they'll do), 2011 will see Arch on many servers and desktops around here.
Cheers from the freezing South of France...

  • Cannot Upload Resources to P6 v7 - System out of Memory

    Hello,
When I import resource assignments to P6 v7, I get an the following error message:
"Your system is out of memory. Please close other running applications and try this operation again."
I also noticed that the PM.exe file in Task Manager was consuming a huge amount of system memory, over 1 GB.
After this error message, when I go back to my P6 schedule, I find that several activity durations have been zeroed out. I've never experienced this with earlier versions of P6. Has anyone encountered any of this before?
Here's some more info about the schedule - It has 8600 activities, and 7000+ resource assignments.
    Thanks for your help!

    Jason,
Thanks for your reply. I would have thought that 2GB of memory would me more than sufficient. Would increasing the memory to say 3GB or 4GB help? Incidentally, I did break down the spreadsheet into 7 "chunks" of about 1000 entries, and was able to successfully import the spreadsheet that way.
Also what do you mean by API?
Thanks again! It certainly won't hurt, but I doubt that 3/4gb even is going to allow you to import that many assignments in one shot with the method you are using; since P6 is a 32bit application, it cannot address that much memory.
The api is the programmers interface. It would require knowledge of Java programming, however, if you are going to be doing this sort of thing a lot, it would pay for itself many times over in speed, ease of use, and avoiding any potential issues.

  • Stabilizing Options: Motion4 vs. Steady vs. Boris vs. L&L vs. ?

With the stipulation that NO stabilizing software is a substitute for properly shot footage...
Am about to test out demos for some of the major players in this field, which appear to be:
    - Magic Bullet Steady from Red Giant
    - Boris Optical Stabilization
    - Lock & Load X from CoreMelt
    - and of course Motion4, which I've already played with a little bit.
(Am deliberately not including FCP's built-in SmoothCam option because of some built-in limitations, partly discussed in this related thread:

But would be interested to hear from anyone in this forum who's tried out one or more of the above, and has any insights as to their relative strengths and weaknesses (especially as regards speed, ease of use, versatility, and of course, ultimate image quality).

I'm just needing to smooth out occasional bumps in some doc footage. It's all hand-held, and I'm definitely NOT trying to disguise that fact. But every so often there's a shot -- or even just one moment within a particular shot -- where the camera wobble, while still not extreme, is just enough to seem inconsistent with the rest of the footage, and so becomes momentarily distracting.
It's those moments which I'm looking not to eliminate, but just to dial back a bit.

  • What is ESB real value add?

    Hi,
While reviewing the new ESB functionality, as I suspected all along, I don't see anything new in ESB. There seems to be lot of overlap with BPEL in terms functionality.
Why can't we use BPEL to do the routing/filtering/transformation provided by ESB? Conceptually ESB Systems and BPEL Processes are analogous to me. I undersand Business Process Orchestration is different from messaging middleware.
My question why can't we orchestrate p2p/pub-sub integration interactions using BPEL? Any ideas/suggestions?
The immediate drawback I see with ESB is you have to deal with lot of dependent artifacts to model a interaction. For example, you need at least one .esb file and .esbsvc for each routing service you have.
    Regards,
    Rajesh

Agreed, many have been using BPEL for ESB use cases for a while and that is great. I'd say speed, ease of use and enabling a more distributed topology are some good reasons why someone might want to use ESB for stateless data integrations. The console has some additional flexibiliy and enables manage of endpoints and back out changes so that could be another factor. By all means, don't feel compelled to migrate all applicable BPEL processes to ESB, take advantage of ESB when required.
    Hope this helps
