Speed getting lower every day since adsl2+ upgrade

Background : My router has always from day 1 been switched off at 11pm at night and turned back on at 7am in the morning. With adsl max I consistently had a download speed of 850Kb/s
2 weeks ago my line was upgraded after a phone call to BT, initially everything was great, speeds were not much better for the first coupld of days (950Kb/s) but then shot up to 1250Kb/s for a few days. Since then however my line has been getting slower every day. Today is the worst and I am now getting 690Kb/s.
I know I'm going to get the usual "leave router connected for 3 day" answer of someone, but what does this achieve ? If my line says connected at 6.5Mbps and I leave it on for 3 days solid does that mean 3 days of being stuck at that speed or does the line recalculate connection speed at certain intervals ?

Thats my line stats as it stands , down from 11Mbps connection a week ago . Cannot connect to the main socket as where the line comes in the house is just a blank faceplate with a cable coming out the bottom into a smaller box then out and accross the room to the only phone socket in the property.
At this rate I would have been better staying on my old package instead of being made to take out a new contract at less favourable terms.

Nothing but a phone connected to the line. The sky box has never been connected to the line as last year when we got a Sky HD box slowed the connection right down.
As for the router being on for the 10 days, no one ever said that to me. The only reason I know that turning it off daily could be a negative was through this forum.
As for my original question. If I now leave the router on permanately does it reconfigure the connection istelf or does it have to be reset every now and then. Very frustrating going from 850Kb/s on adslmax to 1200+ then down to sub 700.
I am unable to run a speed test at the moment , but with only the homehub connected to the master socket the results look like much the same , The hub seems to be connecting at bang on 6.5Mbs every time so I assume the line has been set to this by the DLM ? How long on ADSL 2 does it take to work its way back up ? I ran a speed test earlier today and I belive my IP profile was 5.85 or some such , why would it be set so low when the line was happy at 10+ last week ?

  • Since downloading firefox my computer has been getting infected every day

Have had this laptop since December 2010. Never had any problem with infiltrations. Everyone said Firefox was better than Internet Explorer. Don't know if it is a coincidence but since I started using Firefox, my computer has been getting infected every day. Have ESET Smart Security 4 and it will clean some of the files but shows error when cleaning others. Is there something I can do?

  • Firefox 4 (& 4.0.1) has consistently crashed every day since I installed it ONLY when I am visiting The Guardian's website. Any ideas please?

Firefox 4 (and 4.0.1) has crashed every day since installation ONLY when I am visiting The Guardian's website. I usually have 15+ tabs open but the browser remains steady with every other web page... thoughts please.

I checked the crash reports but could not establish the cause of the crashes. The number of tabs open is unlikely to have an impact upon this.
One of the associated bug reports indicates that it may be related to extensions. Try the procedure in the following link to start Firefox in safe mode and see if it still crashes. If it does not crash in safe mode it indicates that an extension may be causing this.

  • An old report gets reprinted every day

    Hello all,
We have an application that based on Oracle Reports and Forms.
Now, one of the old reports, originally printed 6 months ago, gets reprinted every day.
We don't have any ideas why. No one on purpose does it
I was wondering if any of you have experienced the same issue.
    Thank you, Sonya

By report you very likely mean report output, or report result?
If so, looks like the report has been scheduled to run every day, and the start date was set 6 month ahead. Someone's error, or something. See your application manual on how to schedule / unschedule / view scheduled reports.

    Hi
Try to clean the cooling ventilators using a compressed air spray.
Dust and debris inside the fans might prevent the air from circulation which leads to higher temperature.
You should also use the Toshiba graphic card drivers instead of any other drivers from any 3rd party pages. The drivers from Toshiba page contains an GPU overheating protection which other drivers dont.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro Retina freezing almost every day since I have installed Mavericks?

I bought my Macbook Pro Retina in March and only use it lightly for school. I don't do anything crazy on it, and I have used barely any space on it. I have never had any problems in terms of freezing, but ever since I installed Mavericks, it's been freezing almost every day. Is there any way to stop this? It's very frustrating because I will be in the middle of something and it will just stop working. The only way to stop the freezing is to hold down the power button until it shuts down. By the time I restart it, I've lost my work. I wouldn't mind reverting back to Mountain Lion, if it's possible, because I never had any problems with it. But if I can fix it without reverting to Mountain Lion, that would be preferable. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Lots of people have this problem too but no one has a reply, any suggestions??

Have been unable to download telegraph subscription for last 4  days since they up graded the ap. can you tell me how to restore it please?

You're the second person in two days having trouble with the Telegraph update. Step one is a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons for 10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait 15-20 seconds till your iPad starts on it's own.

So, a while ago I decided to get a SSD and upgrade to 4GB of RAM when I was still using Snow Leopard. Great investment, totally worth it. Well, for a while. Boot times were good at first. But they got sluggish. So of course I decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion because that would speed up my mac, right? Wrong. It takes my computer ten seconds from the time I push the power button to respond and begin booting. It takes anywhere from one to two and a half minutes to get to the login screen. On the login screen it won't respond to any input from keyboard, trackpad, or mouse for ten seconds more. When I type in my password, it's another thirty seconds to a minute before the spinning beach ball of death disappears and what should be my desktop appears. Instead I'm greeted by my desktop picture and nothing else. One to one and a half minutes later, my desktop, dock, and menu bar are all there in front of me. But we're not out of the woods yet. It takes about two or three more minutes before my computer becomes even remotely usable- if I just start clicking I'll get the beach ball of death and have to wait longer, watching my once-swift Google Chrome browser bounce endlessly up and down, never opening.
TL;DR: It takes way too long for my computer to start up given its specifications.
You might be poised at your keyboard right now, telling me to repair disk permissions, clear caches, reset PRAM and SMC, etc... but I've already done that. I have about 75GB free space on my solid state drive, so that's not an issue. I've used Onyx and CleanMyMac2 to clean up anything that could be causing the problem, and it hasn't fixed slow boot times and general sluggishness.
I've scoured the forums far and wide to find the answer that will transform my computer into the speed-demon it once was. That is why I have turned to you, dear internet, to aid me in my quest.
I'm not a digital dummy- I can follow just about any advice you give me if you're clear enough in explaining steps required. The OP in almost every thread I've visited thus far was clueless and simply needed routine maintenace or a hardware upgrade to fix the problem, and I know that can't be the issue... so what can?
(PS I did select the SSD as my startup disk after installing it)

Just seeking some advice on the following please:
I have had a good stable broadband connection for over a year (around 3.5Mbps downstream). My local exchange (Bishop's Stortford) was upgraded Monday 29th November.  Homehub (2A) reset.  Currently I have the following:

It's been connected over 3 days and the downstream and upstream figures have been constant throughout.  However the IP profile (from BT speedtester checks) has been 350kbps since the exchange upgrade.  My questions are would the IP profile be expected to start so low and should it have risen by now?  Do I leave it longer?  Note: nothing in my setup has changed.  This is directly related to the exchange upgrade.  Any help much appreciated.  Thanks.

OK thanks - but would the ip profile be expected to start so low compared with the ADSL synch?
Email BT sent regarding upgrade said:
Your line needs time to settle down
For the next ten days or so, your broadband might slow down or even stop now and again. That’s normal and your speed will soon settle down. You can help it along by leaving your BT Home Hub or router on all the time and using your broadband as much as you can for this period.
but no mention that it might be virtually unusable for up to 10 days.

adsl2/2+ is a lot more unforgiving on line noise compared to adslmax and looking at your stats the line noise onadsl2 is far higher than on adslmax.  have you tried connecting your router to the test socket and see if that gives a better speed but more important reduces the errors
try quiet line test  dial 17070 option 2  should be quiet no hiss/crackle and best with corded phone  if cordless then dull hum normal
with your current attenuation I would expect about 9.5/10mb on a good line with no noise.
the other line you describe that is a very large increase for the upgrade and suggests the line was not running at potential before the upgrade

  • My Mid 2007 24" iMac has been a bit laggy on Yosemite and getting worse every day, so I went to the Apple Support pages on Apples website looking for help and thought I'd found some. This is what I did and it made everything 100 times worse :(

So here is what I found and what I did to try to alleviate the RAM eating upgrade named Yosemite. This guy has helped quite a few people, you can read all the comments and I gave it several tries this morning.

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.
Guide of how to access Safe Mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again. You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.
More info about PRAM: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Voila, reconnect your external displays and enjoy your system.

I hope to hear from anyone even to knock me in the head, lol. Thanks in advance and I'll be around trying to figure this out.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
