Speed Inhibited by disk malfunction

Hi - my mac mini has been constantly crashing and difficult to start up. On running disk warrior it has warned of an impending system failure.
I'm now trying to rebuild the directory but it has stuck for several hours on locating the directory data with the advice 'speed inhibited by disk malfunction'.
Should I carry on running this or does it sound like a lost cause and needing an erase and install or possibly a new hard drive?
Thanks in advance!

It sounds to me that your hard drive is either sufficiently 'failed' that the MacOS install can't be read from it and thus isn't bootable, or that the directory damage was such that the MacOS install is no longer usable. Either way, the flashing question mark shows that the system can't find a bootable MacOS on the system.
If SMART status shows as failing, the probability is that the drive is no longer viable. At best you should attempt to rescue what data you can if you have not already backed up your files/documents etc.
If you have the original install disk that came with the system, you could try and boot to that and see if you are able to reinstall MacOS on the internal drive, but it is likely you will have to reformat thew drive to stand much chance of success - which of course will cause all your data to be lost unless you have taken backups of it.
In this situation, I'd obtain a suitable external drive, use the original install disk to partition it to the GUID scheme if the mini is an intel model, and install MacOS on that, then boot the system to that to get it running again. After that, I'd copy all important data off the internal drive (possibly requiring Prosoft Data Rescue II - which is an excellent data recovery tool) and then attempt to reformat the internal and reinstall MacOS. If that operation fails, I'd then replace the internal, but in the meantime the external would still permit the system to be used as normal.

  • Hard disk malfunction, what's the next step?

After I upgraded to Tiger version 10.4.9, my PB would boot more slowly each time, but would eventually make it to the desktop. Thinking it was software related, I ran Applejack, which said the directory was corrupt. In another discussion topic, I was advised to run Disk Warrior with the 'C' key depressed, and this turned up a "disk malfunction" that prevented the disk directory from being rebuilt or replaced. The good thing is the data is still there...at least, last I saw.
I then connected a firewire cable, hooking the sick PB to a healthy PB, put the ill PB into target mode and tried to grab the files I needed. While I was doing that, the sick PB froze. I tried again, froze again.
I was advised then to try Data Rescue, which I did and nothing happens. Never boots the bootable CD and never runs anything.
Now when I try to boot up the ill PB, it takes forever to get to the desktop or never gets there at all. It twice (not in a row) beeped once, then flashed the sleep light, started up but nothing happened. Mostly, it never sounds the startup chime, seems to start up with the bolt running, but never makes it to the desktop. Connecting the firewire gets it into target mode using 'T' but the drive never shows up on the healthy PB.
Judging from what you've heard, can you confirm it's a hardware problem? And if yes, what must I do now since there is no Apple store in Greece and I'm a frustrated American journalist who needs to desperately retrieve the data inside since I believe my last backup was 3 months ago (I know, I know, my bad!).
Anything else I should check? Any suggestions I can try myself? I'm obviously not an expert, so if this involves something like swapping out the hard drive, I'll likely need to call someone since that sounds scary.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer me input.

    Hi Kat,
Almost certain it's a hardware issue (actually sounds like two: based on scrambled directory, first is HD, but then it won't boot/run properly from a utilities disc, which sounds like maybe logic board or RAM). My next move would be to take the HD out and try it in an external enclosure. If at any point, trying anything, you are able to access, don't try getting everything on the HD; start with the most important files and go from there.
Removing the HD really isn't that big of a deal; skilled person maybe 10 minutes, first-timer who can follow step by step instructions and can use a screw driver (actually it's a Torx bit, different shape head than a screwdriver), maybe 30-40 minutes. Directions are right in your manual, or at ifixit.com, or in Apple's support area:

  • Is there any way to speed up "repair disk" over internet recovery on OSX

After receiving a grey screen on startup, I finally have been able to boot into internet recovery on my 13" macbook pro. I'm running "Repair Disk" from the Disk Utility on my "Macintosh HD" drive. The estimated time is listed at "1 day, 23 hours", and has been stuck there for about 8 hours. It was 2 days and then did move to 1 day, 23 hours, but has not moved since.
Is there any way to speed up this disk repair? Would connecting over ethernet rather than WiFi help? Should I go somewhere with a faster internet connection than my home (1.1Mbps Down / 1.6 Up)? It can't possibly take over 2 days to repair the disk under normal conditions, right?

A hard wire connection should be faster than wifi.  If you have been running Disk Utility Repair for 8 hrs, try is again and if after an hour you still see the same result, I suspect that the HDD is faulty.
I would try an external boot HDD and see if the MBP can boot from that.  If it can, than that indicates that your internal HDD has failed and must be replaced.  Transfer as much data as you can.
    Ciao.

  • Transfer speed in Target Disk mode

This may not be a question as I am not even interested in the "why" any more.
My MBP (2.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 7200rpm HD, Week 15) is in target disk mode, and I am copying my Aperture Library (50GB) over to my PowerMac G4 via firewire. Obviously the firewire ports on both sides are Firewire 400, but the file transfer speed appears to be noticeably slow compared to a similar transfer between my external hard drive and the PowerMac G4.
When I copy over the exact same library (50GB, about 40,000 files according to Finder) from the external HD to the PowerMac, it takes less than 40 minutes. Now between my MBP and PowerMac G4, Finder estimates more than 2 hours.
I am curious why this is the case when both the external HD and my MBP have 7200rpm drives. Has anyone noticed this too?

Disks aren't (usually) rated by read/write speed, at
least not by the manufacturers. They sell by
    capacity.
You’re kidding, right? Drive manufacturers specify transfer rates, average, minimum and maximum seek times. Rotational latencies and cache buffer sizes. All these parameters are direct measures of performance, and people who design and build systems pay close attention to them. I know I do. I’ve been putting 10,000 RPM Ultra-160 and now Ultra-320 SCSI drives and dual-channel SCSI adaptors in my Linux desktops for several years, now. These parameters have a large effect on performance, obviously.
It's not a question of 'consider', it's a question of
verifiable fact - data on the inner part of the
spindle cannot be written or read as quick as data on
    the outer part. …
If you cannot tolerate the minimum speeds, then you cannot use that part of the drive. If you’re going to use the full capacity of the drive, you won’t get the speed. You are forced to de-rate the drive one way or the other.
    That’s what I’m saying.
In other words, if you’re going to use the whole drive, then you’re going to get the speeds you get. Avoiding filling it is not really an option, is it?

  • Help! data manipulation for high speed streaming to disk from multiple boards and multiple channels

I am using Labview 7.1 and have been trying to capture data from 12 channels simutaneously sampled at 2MS/s each and streaming to disk for up to a minute or more.  The hardware I am using is 2 x PXI 6133 S series boards with a MXI4 link to a Pentium D 2.8 Ghz machine with 2Gb ram.   I have 2 sata drives set up in a raid 0 configuration which should give me hard disk write speed faster or equal to the MXI-4 transfer speed.
I have first started off by using the example code "multi device sync - analog input- cont acquisition" which has enabled me to sync the two boards and sample at the required speed.
To stream the data to disk, I have first merged the data from each board  together to save it to one file.  I have tried using the storage vi's but I end up with a Daqmx read error (trying to read data that is no longer available).  I have played around with the read data size to the point that I either get a insufficient memory error, or I get the "trying to read data that is no longer available"  error.  I have also tried using the file IO blocks with some success and have found that I have been able to stream to disk only if I configure the daqmx read block to output the data in "raw 1D I16" format and plugging it into the file-write block.  In doing this, I have noticed that using  multiple channels on one daqmx read task, I will get all the channels in one 1D array rather than a 2D array organized by channels.  This makes it messy to read at the end of this, and I also don't want to write another vi to separate the channels, due to the high chance of getting the data mixed or messed up if I happen to change the number of channels on a board
Is there a cleaner way of streaming this data to disk and keeping the channel data separated from each other?, and/or is there a better way to capture and handle the data I need?
I have attached the vi which I have got to consistantly work streaming to disk using the raw 1D I16 format.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    Hi,
    i can suggest following
Refer to an example VI called as "High speed data logger.VI"  in conjunction with "High Speed data logger reader.vi" in Labview examples. Alhrough the logger might be in Tradiditional Daq format, it can be quite easily converted to Daq Mx format to store data in Binary (I32 format) . I have used this for many of my applications and i have found that the data retrieved does not have any "messups".
Why not keep a seperate file for each card? This way, you do not have to load your application with extra process. You only have to acquire and save. After saving in Binbary format, you can retrive it offline, convert it to ascii format and merge the data files of various cards to get one consolidated ascii data file.
    hope this helps
    Regards
    Dev

  • G5 Switches to Auto Speed with Installation Disk and Overheats

My G5 overheats when set to "Automatic" mode in the Energy Saver window of System Preferences. I must leave it set on "Reduced" speed. However, when I startup from the installation disk it sets the speed at Automatic and I cannot complete tasks like "repair permissions" and make an image of my boot drive before the fans go turbo and the processor (I presume) overheats.
How can I set energy saver to "reduced" when booting up with the installation disk or, how can I solve the overheat problem ( Cleaning dust out of the inside has no effect on the overheating/driving problem. I keep it very clean.) Could a bad video card cause this?

Can you please provide details on the exact model?
For a start, the PRAM battery is likely dead.  PRAM tells the computer which drive to start with, other basic information.  Still, you can usually get the computer to start, though bad PRAM is unpredictable and could be stopping that.
Some computer models use software to control cooling fans.  If there's no software commands they automatically go into high speed to prevent overheating.  Your software obviously isn't loading, so runaway fans.

  • Transfer speed to Airport Disk?

I have a 300GB LaCie connected to the USB2 port on my Airport Extreme Base Station. So far, this arrangement seems to be working fine in Leopard--but I'm wondering if the data-transfer rate is abnormally slow.
I have the Wireless Radio Mode set to 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) (unfortunately, I can't go 802.11n only, or my TiVo can't connect), and the iMac I'm on is only a few feet away from the Base Station. I'm transfering a 3.5GB iMovieHD file from the iMac to the 300GB LaCie right now, and the total transfer time is about 42 minutes. Does this seem normal?

There's a bit of confusion in this thread about speeds.
Data transfer speeds are sometimes given in MegaBITS per second Mb/s and sometimes given in MegaBYTES per second MB/s. (it's easy to get them confused)
The Airport Extreme's wireless is rated at 270Mb/s.
That number does not reflect real world use (but all manufacturers use the theoretical value) What it means is that this is the maximum number of bits per second going in both directions including all the overhead stuff.
What is the maximum real world speed? In the real world the best speed you'll see copying a file from one place to another is 10MegaBYTES per second. This is very fast wireless very similar to wired ethernet. It can only be achieved when the Airport is set to 5GHz radio mode.
The USB hard drive does not achieve this speed. The CPU in the base station struggles to cope with files systems and the drive. So reading and writing you get between 3 and 6 MegaBYTES per second. The same drive would be 4 or 5 times quicker if it were plugged into your computer.
Using a NAS is faster. But this is plenty fast enough for streaming HD videos.
    Jon,
Your speed is about half the regular speed for copying. Not massively slow but slower than I'd expect.
    Try connecting at 5GHz n-only.
And use the graph device in Airport Utility to see if you have a poor signal strength.

  • TM backuo disk malfunctioning

    Hello,
Time Machine quit backing up a few days ago, and I realized my external backup hard drive icon had disappeared from my desktop. Tried rebooting, etc. but no change. Here's the perplexing part...System Profiler shows "Unknown Device" under FireWire. So, I went to Disk Utility to verify/repair the disk and Disk Utility can't see the disk at all. Part of my operating system can see it and part can't?!? I'm hearing a soft "ticking" sound coming from the power supply cord/box. The external drive is a LaCie d2 and it's max one year old. If the drive is dead, this will be the second LaCie drive to die on me in less that a year. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks

    Hi
LaCie build quality strikes again. Judging by the ticking sound coming from the PSU odds are it's that that's causing the problem. In my experience generally the drive itself is actually OK, although you never know? I regularly deal with LaCie requesting RMAs for their products and PSUs for their external drive products regularly fail - amongst other things. If the drive is still within warranty (2 years) then you should be able to apply for a replacement by visiting their website or by taking it back to where you purchased it from.
In the meantime if you have access to a another similar drive's PSU you should be able to use that. Something you could consider is to purchase another one just in case the first one packs up. They're cheap enough.

I encountered your problem myself, when transferring large files via usb.  The desktop GUI would be virtually locked up and frozen, keyboard response was very slow.  I would hit ctr + alt + f1 to swith to a terminal and I would have to wait 60 seconds or more for the keypress to be recognised.  I believe its a bug in the linux kernel somewhere, but I can't recall exactly where I read it.

  • 2 HD disks malfunction on NAS400

i have a NAS400 with 4x2TB disks.  it become bad. I checked the status on Disk Volume setting. it shows one as Normal, one as Abnormal.  and two others are Good.
is there anyway to recover the 2 Normal/Abnormal disks or they are just bad.  WD disks don't seem that all reliable.

    Hello wsun2,
Is your NAS400 a seagate brand?
Like what is displayed on this site: http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/network-storage/business/blackarmor-nas-400/
There is NMH400 from linksys but it is only capable of 2 hard drive.

  • Slowed speed, freezes, high disk usage

After I have been on the computer for about 10-15 minutes, it starts to freeze and slow down. I get a high disk usage message from Norton saying that Windows Explorer Exe. is causing this. I also keep getting the same 5 updates even after I have installed them. I have a Compaq Presario SR5602FH Desktop PC Using windows home basic. Also the Hp updater does not open anymore.

Norton is pretty good but you still could have viruses. I don't think you do and I believe it is your hard drive going bad.  I would try to run check disk and if your laptop has the utility partition, test your memory and hard drive.

  • My ebay nightmare - faulty disk upon arrival

Just bought a 15" powerbook from an ebayer and unfortunately my experience has been, so far, less then happy. I have two PB 12" that I love and I bought this machine for a friend after convincing him, for months, of the merits of Macs. Got the machine and I'm having major disk problems. Luckily I don't have a data recovery issue since the machine is brand new.
First off, here are the specs:
    Powerbook G4 15", 1Ghz, 768MB, 60GB HD
    Model#: A1046
Apple Certified Refurbished Seriel: RM5100SLNRY (nowhere in the ebay listing did it mention that is was a refurb)
I live in Belize, Central America and I just received this powerbook from a solid seller off of ebay who claimed in his ad that the computer was in "good working condition". I truly hope this seller did not intentionally sell me something he knew would be DOA, but this remains to be seen. Sending the thing back to the US for repairs represents a HUGE pain in the ***.
Here is what has happened so far:
    1) Opened PB for the first time. Seller claimed he was installing a fresh copy of 10.4.7, so I figured I just start right up instead of bothering with a fresh install myself.
    2) First thing I noticed is that the chime took a full 10 seconds, the gray screen and apple take a full 12 seconds after the chime. Never does boot with regular startup, stuck on gray apple with no spinning wheel, just sits at the apple. This is very different from my two 12" PBs that both boot quickly and smoothly.
    3) Decided to go directly to fresh install (full erasure), worked fine, zero errors or hangups.
    4) Upon reboot, same thing, stuck at gray apple logo.
    5) Reboot attempt into verbose mode - FAILED
    6) Reboot attempt into single-user mode - FAILED
    7) Reboot attempt into safe mode - FAILED (5/6/7 all get stuck on gray apple logo, have never been able to get into these modes)
    8) Back into disk utlity, disk shows up fine
    9) Ran verify/repair, each time it gives me different results
    a) "repairing disk failed - cannot unmount"
    b) "invalid sibling link"
    c) Checking Catalog file -> Invaild Code Structure -> Volume Check failed -> Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    d) or it simply gives a clean bill of health
    10) This is the weird part, the test is different almost every time I run it
    11) dmesg is reporting the following lines at the end:
    disk0s3: I/O error
    12) When I run "sh /etc/rc", I get the following before the machine forces me to reboot.
    registermach_bootstrapservers: bootstrap_register(): 1101 (repeated 10+ times)
    Launching Crash Reporter
Crash Log shows nothing at all
    13) Ran Diskwarrior, identified several errors, apparently "rebuilds" them. While running, gives the following error:
    (Speed inhibited by disk malfunction)
PB will still not boot, nothing has changed.
    14) Messed around with boot partition position/sizes, using disk utility. Created a 10GB "boot" partition and a put the remainder into "data"... reloaded OSX, again with the "FULL ERASE" option... now the machine will actually get into VERBOSE and SINGLE-USER modes, only to tell me "disk0s3: I/O error" once again. Now the spinning wheel comes on with all boot attempts, but still will not boot.
    15) At this point, I ran Diskwarrior again, says "boot" partition is in use and it cannot rebuild...
    16) Ran DW on "data", still giving the "speed inhibited by disk malfunction" error while running, many errors corrected
    17) Ran DW on "boot", still giving the "speed inhibited by disk malfunction" error while running, many errors corrected
And in the end, it still doesn't boot... and I'm actually back to the original state with no diagnostic boot capabilities.
I'm sure I need a new drive, but you can imagine how ****** I am that was sold to me as a machine "in good working order"... I don't "blame" the seller, but this really *****... Because I am in Central America, getting a new drive and replacing it is NOT GOING TO BE FUN.
Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
    Powerbook(s)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You can use a program as Tech Tool Pro 4. It can install a bootable eDrive on your HD or you can read below.
    From the Finder Help Menu:
    Partitioning a hard disk:
Use Disk Utility to partition a disk into sections, or "volumes," each of which works like a separate disk. You might want to partition a disk so that you can have different versions of the Mac OS, or organize your information in a logical manner.
Partitioning a disk erases all the files on the disk. If you have any files on the disk you want to save, be sure to make a copy of them on another disk before you partition the disk.
You cannot partition the disk that you started up from. If you want to partition the startup disk, you must restart your computer using your Mac OS X Install disc, as described below. Because partitioning will erase your hard drive, you should back up your hard disk before proceeding.
To learn more about using Disk Utility, open Disk Utility, in the Applications/Utilities folder, and choose Help > Disk Utility Help.
    To partition your startup disk:
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.
When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
When the Installer appears, choose Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your disk from the list, and click Partition.
Select how you want to partition the disk and any options you want, then click the Partition button at the bottom of the window.
    Quit Disk Utility.
When the Installer opens again, you can install Mac OS X on one of the partitions.
If you want to use another disk as the start-up disk, choose Utilities > Startup Disk and choose it.

  • Should I give up on Disk Utility?

My husband gave me new RAM for my birthday. It's made by IBM, not some generic company, he made sure it's the right type for my eMac, etc. I previously had a 128 stick and a 256 stick; I replaced the 128 with this 512.
That was Tuesday; today, Firefox randomly froze. He tried force quitting, which took forever. We had terminal open, and tried to run top from there, but it was saying command not found - which is odd, b/c I've used top tons of times to check what might be slowing things down. All sorts of things were freezing up at this point.
Eventually we quit out of everything, went to the force quit box, and relaunched finder, which was highlighted red. Finder quit but never relaunched. All I had was a blank desktop, the force quit dialog (empty), and the dock, which didn't seem to do much.
So we rebooted, and it came up a flashing ?. Tried rebooting with option held down, it showed two arrow buttons, neither of which did anything (well, one arrow made it think for a while THEN do nothing). We shut down the computer, and replaced the new RAM with the old RAM. I hadn't had a problem like this since I first bought the computer 3 years ago, and it turned out to be faulty RAM which Apple replaced.
Still wouldn't boot with the old RAM. Reset the PRAM, nothing. Finally put in the install disk and tried Disk Utility.
We've been playing with Disk Utility ever since. It keeps changing between "Invalid Node Structure," "Keys Out of Order," and a couple of times "Invalid Sibling Link," though it hasn't given us that in a while. It's mostly INS, with a few KOoO thrown in. It claims to repair it every time, haven't gotten any errors or anything but also haven't gotten an all clear.
Is there any chance that DU will be able to fix this? I'd really rather not drop $80 on Disk Warrior, but it's certainly better than a new computer. I know that sometimes you have to run fsck many times before it cleans everything up, is DU similar?
Also, is it likely the new RAM causing the problem? Is there any way to know for sure? We might have to prove the RAM is faulty if we want to get it replaced.

Okay, so I ran to CompUSA and got DiskWarrior. (I didn't want to wait a week for it to get here from a website, I need my computer back.)
It's hanging on Step 5: Locating directory data...
It says "(Speed inhibited by disk malfunction)". It seems to still be doing something - the striped bar moved every now and then (every 30 seconds or so).
I cancelled it after letting it run for a couple hours, and used the hardware check on DW - it said my disk was fine. It's unclear whether the top bar moved in that time. This time, I've marked where the top bar was when it hit the slowdown so that in a few hours I can see if it's made any progress at all...
It doesn't say it can't do anything, just that the speed is "inhibited"... Has anyone else seen this? Should I just let it run, maybe overnight? Is it likely to ever finish? What are my options now?
Thanks for your help so far.
I'm starting to worry that, in the process of flipping it over to install the new RAM, I somehow hurt the hard drive... Though this computer has never been that delicate before!

  • Can't repair disk with Disk Warrior

    Earlier I posted this message:
I have used the Tiger installation disc to attempt to repair disk permissions and repair disk. When I run verify disk, it indictes "keys out of order" and gives me a "repair disk" message. When I run the repair disk from the installation DVD, the blue bar moves about 1/2 way. Then everything freezes.
The reply advised me to get Disk Warrior, which I did. I am attempting to rebuild the directory and I get a parenthetic message (Speed inhibited by disk malfunction). The wheel spins for hours and ultimately the arrow reappears and is frozen. Any idea where to go next?

    Hi, Lucy -
If the damage to the directory is substantial, it can take DiskWarrior a while to fix it. Suggest you let it sit there and run - it may not appear that anything is happening, but it probably is.

  • My iMac G5's Hard Drive Has Most Likely Failed

So my hard drive has been having problems since November 2005, but the computer has been barely holding out, until now. The computers just dead. I got this message from
It happened at the most random time. Yesterday morning, I turned on my computer and opened Safari. Everything went just fine, and about 3/4 way through loading the apple startpage, the entire computer froze up.
I tried disk utility but it froze while verifying and repairing disk permissions (about 1/8 started and it froze) and when I did verify disk, it came up with a popup window stating:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
And then in the Disk Utility information window where it says the status that its at (Checking....) it said this:
    Checking HFS Plus Volume
    Checking Extents Overflow File
    Checking Catalog File
    Invalid Sibling Link
    Volume Check Failed
The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I ran fsck in single-user mode, and i got this:
    #fsck -fy
    disk0s3: I/O timeout
    (4, 7808)
I'm not sure what the coordinates mean. I'm thinking they might be the coordinates to a bad sector that may be screwing EVERYTHING up because the computer failed to recognize the bad sector, and close it off of any further use.
After that I ran diskutility in single-user mode thinking maybe the GUI version was corrupted... but I let the diskutil verifyPermissions /dev/disk0s3 run for an hour and nothing showed up on the screen so i just decided to stop, shut down, and go to bed.
So now i've figured, my iMac has given me enough trouble as it is. ive had so many problems with it... ever since november 2005 (5 months into owning it) it has had the following hard drive error code show up in extended test for the Apple Hardware Test ever since... and about 1 hour ago, i retested it, and sure enough this came up:
    **ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
    2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus O-Master
    **ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
I'm really not happy with mac right now. I think their 1 year warranty is useless and they pretty much leave you screwed if you dont buy their applecare protection plan.
I have a windows 98 (upgraded from 95) that i bought way back in 1997, and its still functional... with the same hard drive... same everything... and it works just fine... except for the memory is small because back then 128 GB was the biggest it got) :P
so a 5 GB hard drive going on its 10th working years, and this 150 GB hard drive failed after 14 months... all i've gotta say is: Apple, thats pretty pathetic... especially after you mock PC in their commercials for "breaking down". Ive actually had less problems with all of my 3 PCs combined then I've had with this **** iMac.
So now heres what i'm trying to figure out. i'm wondering, what kind of hard drive i shuold buy to replace it... i tried the DIY hardware replacement ordering page but it says that the apple website couldnt find it (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g5/diy/).
I wasnt planning on buying from the apple DIY anyway, but I wanted to see if it would specify a type of hard drive. Where is the popular website to go to buy these things, and how expensive will it be for me to replace it with a hard drive about as big as my current one).
Or should I not throw my hard drive away yet, and invest hope in it somehow. I heard DiskWarrior could do the trick, but I dont want to have to spend $80 on a piece of software that might not even work out right. And all the free ones you have to download to your mac... but too bad for me, my mac wont even start up... (well it does but when it gets to the desktop, its pretty much unfunctional... just a moving mouse that wont do anything).
Is there some renouned website (as crucial.com is for memory) among these forums that you might suggest?
I'm open and desperate for any input i can get. The sooner the better
    Thanks in advance
    -Mark

Hey look, its my friend Charlie from my Disk Permissions Error -36 post.
Here's our thread from last time. Alot of the stuff there still pertains: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=620422&tstart=0
It turns out the reformat I did only worked for a little while. Then last friday, my kernel was corrupted, and so i did "Erase All" but skipped the "Zero All Data" figuring that it wouldnt be necessary since I wasnt discarding my drive, so there wasnt anything to secure from anyone recovering private data. It worked for 4 days after that, and now I'm here again. With problems.
Do you remember getting disk I/O errors on disk0s3?
If you remember way back then, I had gotten this error when I did diskutil list in Terminal:
    Aug 30 21:42:08 mark-imac-g5 kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier
    0: Applepartitionscheme *149.1 GB disk0
    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 148.9 GB disk0s3
I'm running DiskWarrior right now (borrowed it from a friend... didnt feel up to paying the $80 & have it potentially not work) and its stuck at this message:
    Rebuilding Directory Data
    [ |||||||||||Solid Progress Bar||||||||||| ]
    Step 5: Locating Directory Data
    [\\\\\\\Barbershop-like Progress Bar\\\\\\\]
Speed inhibited by disk malfunction (Skip) (Cancel)
Its been stuck there for about an hour, and I'm assuming its not going to work as you suggested it wouldn't
It's too late to do any good now, but if you ever run the
hardware test and get an error code, you should have Apple
look at it. If you were getting that error code 5 months
after the computer was new, a replacement drive would have
    been covered under your warranty.
I wish I had actually done so. I was a mac-noob back then so I had no idea what anything was, and I was still getting used to the actual working-with-a-mac thing (ive been a Windows user for most of my life except for working/helping teachers with their macs at school... i was always the computer-person in school... it was pretty awesome :P)
I have to disagree with the other posters. I don't think >DiskWarrior is going to help you. Data Rescue II might help >you to get some files off your hard drive if you have files >on there that aren't backed up. But my experience was that >when I got the error in the hardware test, DiskWarrior >didn't work.
Right now I have everything backed up that I need, so it's not like i'm using DiskWarrior to get my data back. I just want a program to be able to tell the hard drive that these certain sectors that are acting up and causing the hard drive to fail are ruined and to not use them anymore. If its not just 1 sector, but the entire hard drive that is failed, I'm not even gonna bother salvaging it (even though i'm sure if it was completely failed there would be no way of getting it back that deep into failure).
I read at this website about someone else who had a similar problem to mine (http://www.desktoppublishingforum.com/bb/archive/index.php/t-901.htmldiskwarrior+speed+inhibited+by+diskmalfunction&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2):

And now the latest reply from Marc the support tech:
There have been a handful who have seen success after four
or five days with the "speed inhibited by disk
malfunction" message. There have also been a few
up to a week. From there, admittedly, the state
of the drive has to be pretty damaged for DiskWarrior to
run so long, although the speed DiskWarrior can work is
also related to the speed of the processor, so four days
for a G3 is different than four days for a G5.
    She later posted this:
,..for a variety of reasons I ended up letting DW chug away on my drive for a few days shy of an entire month.
    *UPDATE MID WRITING THE POST*
Disk warrior finally unfroze! It's now Comparing Directories (recording any file or folder differences).
I'll post more when it's all done
Or if i have trouble mid-way
