Speed issue macbook5,1 extremely slow under lion

Often have to "force quit" Aperture, Omnigraffle, Safari, Skype never open at the same time.
The speed is very slow.
MacBook 5,1  OS-X Lion 10.7.3,  Ram 4Go,  HD WD-6400 ScorpioBlue

Run the Apple hardware test from your Snow Leopard disk that came with the system. Insert the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Boot holding the D key down (or hold the alt/option key and choose the AHT when prompted). When prompted, choose the extended test. Does this identify any hardware issues?
Bring up Disk Utliity, choose the internal hard drive, and on the first aid tab do a verify disk. Does this identify any issues? If so, go into Lion recovery mode (boot with command + R) and use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive.
Assume you have plenty of disk space available for application and system usage? Minimum of 5GB, and more is better.

  • Numbers 09 (Rel. 2.1(436)) extremely slow under Lion

    I just gave Numbers a try with a relatively low complex mortgage calculation - 13 columns, 200 rows - simple formulas (if ... then ... else, difference in dates, simple multiplications).
    Numbers is extremely slow - whenever something is changed in the tables, Activity Monitor shows 100% CPU usage and the SBOD appears - it's nearly not possible to work. Restart of my MacBook Pro or Numbers allone has not made anything better. Has anybody made the same observations, i submitted feedback to Apple, but i have the feeling, that nobody is reading it (3 years ago i submitted the wish for goal seek for Numbers or some sort of Automator support)
    The dilemma is:
    Many of my coworkers now have iPad and iPhone and could use Numbers (i know there are some Excel Simulations for iPad and iPhone around, but these are not so nice to use) - therefore i want to provide the previos Excel Sheets as Numbers documents - but with this performance it's impossible to use Numbers.

    "200 rows of formulas in a Numbers document might be considered to be large ..." - that's complete nonsense - in the beginning of my "Apple History" i had a Mac IIsi, on this machine there was a spreadsheet software running, it's name was Ragtime - i did exact the same calculations which i now want to redo with Numbers - the IIsi with 8 MB of RAM was crunching trough these calculations a lot faster than my Macbook Pro - and there were not only 200 rows to calculate - (to be exact it were 300 + (4 x 25) rows - calculation 300 months + 4 quarters per year).
    Apple builds very nice hardware (most of the time), Apple designs very nice software (also most of the time) - but sometimes Apple Software is truly unusable if one decides just to get one step ahead the absolute-zero-level-hobby-user.
    Of course i know the phrase "horses for courses" and everybody will scratch his head "why does this guy absolutely want to use Numbers for this task and not the old Excel?" - i can tell you that: Because Excel has very bad layout options - in Numbers i can produce very nice layouts, free movable tables, integrated pages which sum up more sub-tables ... - yes, thats also possible with Word an Excel but not in this intuitive way Apple has come up.
    BUT - since Numbers is (and keeps) so dramatically slow it's barely unusable - it makes me sad, that i will never see Numbers being used in a business environment.
    PS: please excuse my rough English, i'm from Austria.

  • Is anyone having issues running Rosetta Stone under Lion OS?

    Is anyone having issues running Rosetta Stone under Lion OS?  My wife updated her iMac a month ago and now can't run Rosetta Stone.

    I was lucky. My new iMac, bought about 3 to 4 weeks ago, came with SnowLeopard. I found that SL could run Power PC software. The first time that I tried to do that an on-screen message asked me whether I wanted to download Rosetta (Yes). Since then my old PPC software has run. Eg., Cinema 4D (which would have cost GBP over 1,000, Toast 7 (GBP80) and others.
    Of course, for those whose machines came with Lion installed, you could buy SL and install it (as I did) on an external bootable HD (partitioned according to GUI).
    Unfortunately, for those buying a future new computer (that is, say, next year), I think that SL will not run on it (according to Apple's policy of not allowing a machine to run on an outdated OS first offered before the date of manufacture of the later machine - I think I have got that right.)

  • Why is Address Book so slow under Lion?

    I changed to Lion as soon as it came out, & many of the intial problems have been resolved since. But I find that Address Book has become & remains a very clunky thing, extremely slow in terms of its search function. Anybody else notice this or have a solution?
    Am using a MacBookPro running 10.7.3
    thanks, Pierre

    I followed your suggestion on speeding up address book and deleted all contacts and imported them again from the archive however they only appear briefly before dissapearing. I assume that iCloud is deleting them.
    I have also tried restoring from timemachine but get "Address book cant be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OSX"
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

  • 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing

    I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time.  It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
    Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive.  My workload hasn't fundamentally changed.  Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
    One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees.  Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding.  Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal.  There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping.  Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
    CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low.  (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
    What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
    Here are the apps I typically run:
    - NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
    - Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
    - Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
    - kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
    - WindowServer also reports using 280MB
    - various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
    I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard.  But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough.  Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be.  I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes.  (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
    Are other people having similar trouble?  Any suggested remedies?  Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
    I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion.  Actually, quite a few things have broken.  Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs.  But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much.  But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.

    Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
    pig.  The longer you are using it the more memory it
    gobbles up.
    In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
    This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
    As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
    HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine.  May
    help since it is a huge collection of files.  But there have been
    issues reported with Time Machine and Lion.  I don't
    use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
    seperate data backup strategy.  Also, in Spotlight
    preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
    my Windows VM folders, for same reason.  Unless you really
    need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
    don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
    of disk access time.
    For solving airport issues check this article:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
    For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
    can.
    Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up.

  • Pages 4.1 slow under Lion

    My wife has a newish 27" iMac, loads of memory, just updated to Lion and Pages 4.1. She dragged me into her office to show how slow Pages 4.1 is while typing in a document that has graphics, about 1/2 second to render each character. Same behavior with the previous version of Pages under Lion, but never an issue under Snow Leopard. Not a problem with a text-only document.
    Known issue? Any thoughts about a workaround?

    It's not Lion which isn't optimized.
    Pages which was already a snail  just received a quick and dirty update to accomodate the Lion features and of course this kind of addition never enhace performances.

  • Aperture running very slow under Lion

    Lift and stamp adjustments takes forever and Processing of images takes hours under Lion OS.....may have to switch back to Snow Lepard

    My Aperture 3 is medium fast after a reboot (8-core MacPro, 6 GIG), but starts to get really slow after the swap file size gets above 100 meg).  I then need to reboot BEFORE Aperture freezes up on me.
    A3/64 was FAST under Snow Leopard... still got slow once in a while.  It is happening way more often under Lion.

  • Stage/Timeline extremely slow under Mountain Lion

    Hello everyone,
    I'm having this issue with Flash CS6 on OSX Mountain Lion. Almost every action in the program causes it to slow down considerably. Things such as selecting/moving anything something on the stage, selecting something in the liberary panel, clicking buttons on any editor panel, and scrubbing the timeline. Even using the Mac's menu bar in Flash is slow. The slowest thing is playback from the timeline editor, it becomes so slow that it often crashes the application:
    Even though all of this is happening, every other application is running perfectly fine. Flash isn't taking more RAM or CPU that it usually does (except when it's about to crash), and I've only had this problem after upgrading to Mountian Lion, in Lion everything was fine. SWF file publish and playback have no problems whatsoever. The exact same problems are even effecting Flash CS5.5. I am an Adobe Creative Cloud member and all the other apps that I've tried work perfectly. I've also tried Flash CS6 in Windows on the same machine and that works as it should. This problem also consists on not only my existing .fla projects, but also brand new ones with absolutly nothing in the liberary or stage.
    I have an Early 2011 13-inch Macbook Pro with a 2.5 GHz i5 and 8 GB RAM upgrade. I also have the 32-bit version of Flash CS6 and CS5.5, and of course OS 10.8
    I have a Bootcamp of Windows, so I can keep working, but rebooting is a big hit on my workflow, so I plan to use my backup of Lion. But before that, I want to try and solve this problem.
    Thanks to those who read this! I hope I can solve this problem.

    Yep - I know the MacFuse is dead, but aparently it is the only way to run the free NTFS-3G plugin. All other options are commercial. I am trying now Paragon NTFS For Mac - if it works, I will have to buy it. And it's the same 20$ as I pay for the whole OS! So basically I will just consider going back to Snow Leopard - I know that I will have much less compatibility problems there in general... I will be able to also run Extensions Manager 1.8 (CS3) there, cause it also doesn't work on Mountain Lion (it is a known issue). It's just too much isn't working for me on 10.8 and Adobe

  • Chinese typing extremly slow in Lion

    this is a nightmare after i install Lion when typing Chinese. The Chinese character typing has become so slow, it dose NOT pop up promptly as it was in Snow Leopard.

    Well, when typing in MAIL, the letters manifest VERY SLOWLY. I am know ACE typist, and it can't keep up with me. I type even a few characters, and wait for several seconds for my textual desires to appear.
    This was well discussed under Snow Leopard, I see.
    Restarting the App often helps for several minutes, but no more.

  • Macbook EXTREMELY slow after lion

    Dear reader,
    I'm hoping for some good support from Apple, because my recent experience with Apple has been horrid. I purchased the lion update for my macbook pro 2gb 2.26ghz dual core in the Apple store. Right after installing this, my macbook started becoming slower. It's taking quite long to boot up, and running more than 2 programs results in a screen freeze every 10 seconds. It literally takes 10-30 seconds for it to process one mouseclick.
    I was hoping that this would be fixed with the update released just now including iCloud etc. Unfortunately it just got worse. As we speak, I have to wait for my typed sentences to appear in this screen which takes about 15 seconds. Might aswell toss this piece of crap in the garbage bin and switch back to PC. Just installed this update, it has been installing for over 2 hours!
    Any ideas on how to fix this? It's becoming REALLY annoying and I'm bumping into walls wherever I look/go.
    Sort your things Apple, or when Lion doesnt' work on my macbook, instruct your stores to not sell it to owners like me!
    Bah.

    Has Spotlight finished indexing (after a reinstall, it often wants to re-index everything in sight)?  If not, cancel the backup and wait until it is.
    Are you sure it's using Ethernet?  Turn Airport off briefly to be certain.

  • Flash Builder 4 Extremely slow under Windows 7 + Java

    Hello,
    I have the following configuration:
    Sony VAIO SZ
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz (T8100)
    4GB DDR3
    NVidia 8400M GS
    320GB (7200 RPM) HDD
    Windows7 Ultimate (6.1.7600)
    I'm trying to use Adobe Flash Builder 4 (build 272416) in Trial mode.
    I was working for a long time already with the Flex Builder Plug-in 3. Compilation time was always a headache, true, but it still was affordable. But with the Flash Builder 4 production that became so bad that I can't simply use it event to test.
    When started form the "clean" workspace, bundled Eclipse and only one project (Flex) is created - everything looks fine. Even if you add a "hello world" pop-up to your application (that's sarcasm, yeah =)
    The situation changes dramatically when you have any number (greater than zero of course) of Java projects in your workspace.
    Compilation time skyrockets to about 1 - 2 minutes - first (on an empty project created with wizard). Second - it starts crashing with or without reason.
    When I'm trying to create a new Flex project (having several Java projects in the workspace) - the moment the wizard is complete and it's going to show me the contents of the newly created MXML (yes, a few lines with no logic at all) it crashes. When I'm trying to open existing project - well, it opens, but compilation times are greater than 2 minutes (that's a tiny project with a few screens with primitive design, three AS classes and two CSS files and one image included) whenever I just put an empty string to even the main MXML.
    When I'm trying to switch to design view - it crashes 80% of time. The rest 20% it show "gray field" and bugs UI completely.
    When building starts - the only way to avoid it ... well ... go drink a tea. It's impossible to cancel and if I try to cancel it - it hangs forever. Only killing the eclipse process helps.
    And, really, 2 minutes of compilation time? Are you serious? It's like, change the line of code, save, wait 2 minutes with 50% chance of observing never-ending activity?
    Btw, I've tested the Flash Builder Beta - there were no such problems. Everything was really cool and smooth. Compilation time was even faster than Flex Builder 3. And such a surprise with the production version.
    It's all with the JDK 6u14 (yes, I've tested it with the most recent one - 6u18 - the same picture).
    So, is there anyone experiencing the same behavior and any hints on how to fix it? It's really annoying especially knowing and waiting to get hands on all those great SDK 4 features.
    Thanks!

    I think the longer compile times when embedding fonts are sort of to be expected. You're embedding an awful lot of glyphs into your SWF (versus using device fonts or setting an explicit unicode range).
    For example, I tried with the following simple example in Flex 4.0:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
            xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
            xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
            applicationComplete="lbl.text = (loaderInfo.bytesTotal / 1024).toFixed(2) + ' KB';">
        <fx:Style>
            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
            @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx";
            @font-face {
                fontFamily: Calibri;
                fontWeight: normal;
                fontStyle: normal;
                src: url("c:/windows/fonts/calibri.ttf");
            @font-face {
                fontFamily: Calibri;
                fontWeight: bold;
                fontStyle: normal;
                src: url("c:/windows/fonts/calibrib.ttf");
            @font-face {
                fontFamily: Calibri;
                fontWeight: normal;
                fontStyle: italic;
                src: url("c:/windows/fonts/calibrii.ttf");
            @font-face {
                fontFamily: Calibri;
                fontWeight: bold;
                fontStyle: italic;
                src: url("c:/windows/fonts/calibriz.ttf");
            global {
                 fontFamily: Calibri;
                 fontSize: 24;
        </fx:Style>
        <s:controlBarContent>
            <s:Label id="lbl" color="red" fontWeight="bold" />
        </s:controlBarContent>
        <s:VGroup horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0">
            <s:Label text="Calibri regular" />
            <s:Label text="Calibri bold" fontWeight="bold" />
            <s:Label text="Calibri italic" fontStyle="italic" />
            <s:Label text="Calibri bold+italic" fontWeight="bold" fontStyle="italic" />
        </s:VGroup>
    </s:Application>
    Now, the .SWF file in my /bin-debug/ folder was pretty large (~1440 KB -- or about 1.4 MB). When I exported a release version of the .SWF using Builder that number dropped down to ~970 KB (or 0.9 MB). Still rather large.
    Typically when embedding fonts you'll want to specify a unicode range so you only embed the characters you care about (English uppercase/lowercase, punctuation, numbers, etc). Or you could embed Thai ranges or whatever else you want.
    So if I specify the following unicode range for each of the four embed statements, the SWF sizes drop considerably:
    unicode-range
    : U+0020-002F,U+0030-0039,U+003A-0040,U+0041-005A,U+005B-0060,U+0061-007A,U+007B-007E;
    /bin-debug/: ~970 KB (67%)
    /bin-release/: ~520 KB (53%)
    You can find some examples of unicode ranges in the /frameworks/flash-unicode-table.xml file in the Flex SDK. Also, you can specify custom named unicode ranges in your /frameworks/flex-config.xml file:
    <!-- Defines ranges that can be used across multiple font-face declarations. -->
    <!-- See flash-unicode-table.xml for more examples. -->
    <!-- not set -->
    <!--
    <languages>
      <language-range>
        <lang>englishRange</lang>
        <range>U+0020-007E</range>
      </language-range>
    </languages>
    -->
    And this way you could just specify a unicode-range of "englishRange" instead of having to do U+0020-002F, etc.
    Hope that helps,
    Peter

  • Helvetica Neue Bold doesn't render spaces in Photoshop CS4 under Lion

    PS CS4 seems to work great (albeit slightly slower) under Lion. However, I have noticed one glitch that is slightly annoying.
    The Helvetica Neue font on the system renders normally except for the Bold variant, which doesn't seem to render any spaces. Even opening an existing PSD that uses Helvetica Neue will render the font the same way. In fact, there's a flash where it's normal but then all the spaces suddenly disappear.
    Anyone else experienced this or know of a solution?
    Thanks
    AC

    Yes, I'm aware there are always issues - to Adobe's credit, there weren't a whole lot this time around.
    I think I was surprised that you acted, in a one-line (also flippant) response, that we were crazy for upgrading our OS "untested". There are lots of other apps that I use in my daily workflow that had already been upgraded to work with Lion, and I'm not about to partition my computer so I can run Adobe's products which, as I was under the impression (perhaps mistakenly), they had already internally tested to ensure compatibility.
    Perhaps you're over-estimating my urgency. It's one variant of one font, the only issue I've found running CS4 on Lion. It's not a "big roadblock," and my OS + PS is completely functional otherwise. That said, it is a bug with only Adobe products so I felt it was appropriate for me to report here, in the Adobe forums. Coincidentally, I've also reported it at Photoshop.com's Photoshop support forum, where hopefully it may also be seen. Yes, it might take days or weeks... but that's the nature of a bug and fix.
    So basically, I'll wait for the fix. Thanks anyway.
