Speed of EDGE network

Hey, everybody,
I'm curious...is the EDGE network really that slow on the iPhone? Does its connection speed affect the complete rendering of web pages (i.e., are the pages only partially loaded sometimes), or is it just a matter of how long it takes to render those pages?
Come on...how bad is EDGE, really?

EDGE is not anything to tout, for sure. Very similar to dial-up speeds. In areas with weak signals, it could be even longer as the unit has to request a resend bad data packets (as I experienced on my Nokia 9300). One thing to keep in mind with some of these pages that may never come up and freeze. iPhone does have Flash, but does not have Java capabilities. This may be the issue.
As for the future, the 3G is the network to have, but the battery life will be compromised. I am hoping for the UHF spectrum to be the future solution, as this can be used for the broadcast to the phone and the phone can upload via the current Edge network.
By then, the iPhone will be likely priced at $139 and come with a $300 ringtone credit for downloading all the greatest ringtones from Apples future iRingtones website.
Cheers

  • Speed up Edge Network 5X

I found this on another forum. If you don't mind not having true HTML and using Google as a proxy, on the EDGE network Safari can go at blazing speed. I tried this and using the iphone network test, I got throughput speed of 2250kps. Whether it's really true or not I don't know enough about the subject, but using iphone network test on Safari alone with no proxy, I only got 120kps. Google as a proxy will format the pages for a mobil device, so if that's all you need at any given time, and don't have wifi available, it might be a good temporary solution when you are on the road.

Uh yeah, when you use Google as a proxy, the speed test is measuring the speed from whatever web server it's on to the proxy server, not YOU. Sure, reducing the formatting down to WAP will get you plenty snappier responses but then you're back to the same web you get on those "other devices". No thanks.

  • Edge network is pretty decent, look here

i was googleing dslreports on my iphone and came across an iphone speed test and i did it and my average speed on edge network was 200Kb/sec+!! go to this site www.dslreports.com/stest and touch on iphone speed test and it will tell u how fast the network is in your area.

I'm not positive about this but I don't believe this makes any difference in regards to EDGE access.
Several factors are involved - reception level, if you are moving or stationary and the number of other AT&T subscribers with or without an iPhone that are accessing the same cell tower as you.

  • Edge network running slooooooow

Updated my 1st gen IPhone to 3.0 yesterday. Today the EDGE network is running very slow when using Safari. Im located in western PA.
    Anyone else seeing issues???

After updating to 3.0 last night I found I was unable to access the Edge network. Instead I kept getting a message that I did not have a cellular data subscription. After trying several things I found that removing the sim card and reinstalling it I finally was able to access the Edge network again. It was really slow at first, very sluggish. SInce the, about 2 hours later it has gotten better and is at almost normal Edge speeds. Not sure this will help you, but at least you know you aren't the only one!

  • Do you get charged for using AT&T's EDGE network ?

Or can you only use WI-FI for free?
Also, I'm trying to use wi-fi at college, but I need some kind of number to give to my teacher so then he can give me a password to unlock it. Any ideas? Thx!

You can use EDGE for internet access anywhere that you have cell phone reception.
You can use WiFi access only when within range of an available WiFi network that you have been granted access to - either a free WiFi network (password protected or not) such as the WiFi network at your school or via a paid WiFi network that you have paid the required fee in order to gain access.
WiFi networks have limited range - many within 150 feet or so of the wireless router which I've found to be somewhat less with the iPhone when compared to accessing the same using a laptop with wireless card but WiFi access provides much faster internet access or data transfer speed.
EDGE access is similar to a fast dial-up connection.

  • Sometimes my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I am running a pretty powerful work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network, is it a hard drive issue? do I need to "clean out" the computer?

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

  • Cannot receive calls when using Edge network for data?

    Hi,
This afternoon someone was trying to reach me urgently and all her calls to my iPhone went straight into my voicemail. My phone never rang and never showed missed calls.
I spoke to Aaron at Apple, thinking there might be a problem with my phone, and he told me that when the Edge network is in use, then the phone will not ring and calls will be routed straight to voicemail.
Is this really expected behavior? I was not aware of it.
    iPhone 8GB

This has nothing to do with EDGE all other phones will notify you and pause the connection. i posted about this 2 days ago but the thread got deleted.
here is a video that proves this, the noise is from the GSM but the user is clearly on the edge network.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=NMm2AY-_TTY
this is from Tier 2 suport at Apple.
Everyone having this issue should call 1-800-MY iPhon. Ask to speak to Tier II support, the person you get may try to help, and may need to give you a case number. You'll probably have to wait a while on hold.
I just spent an hour on the phone with Tier I & II. The tier I guy started by saying that when you use EDGE it will always go to voicemail. I told him, I was on a user forum & some people said they don't have the issue. He then tested it on his phone & experienced the direct to v-mail issue. We talked about how this was a real problem & how both of our nokia phones didn't have this issue (he actually had the E-61 also). He gave me a case number & transferred my to tier II. The tier II guy told me that this was a software issue. That a pop-up needs to be designed into the software to allow the user the option to disconnect the data connection & accept the voice call, or not. I told him that I'd read on a user forum that some users get voice calls while using EDGE. He said that if they are using you tube the call will automatically interrupt & switch out of you tube. We then tested this on my iPhone & it worked (i.e. the call interupted you tube). He said the software currently decides to disconnect data or send calls to voice mail during EDGE transmissions based on what the user is doing. Phone calls take priority over you tube & widgets (stock & weather)but safari and e-mail take priority over phone calls. He said the thought was, it would be more annoying to users to be in the middle of sending an e-mail and having mail disconnected for a phone call, than having the call go to voicemail. The ideal solution is to have a choice (like other phones allow) but right now the iPhone software does not have a pop-up designed allowing the user to accept the call or keep the data connection. (He seemed to be familiar with this on other phones while being tethered to a macbook to use their data connections & getting voice calls during downloads).
He said he was submitting this to the engineering group & said the more people that call tier II about this & submit it as an issue via online feedback, the higher priority it will get to be addressed in the first software update. So if you want to see this fixed start calling and submitting the issue http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html in as much detail as possible (specifically say that other existing phones Nokia S60s etc. have this function).
and here is a thread that is discussing this serious problem. note it is now many pages long.

  • Is there a way to stop the Edge network from activating?  Overseas Travel

I am travelling in Europe and I do not want the EDGE network to be activated. But I can't find a way to turn off the Edge network. At $1 per KB, this is going to get expensive. I am using WiFi when I can, but the rest of the time, it's on Edge and with Yahoo push email, I end up with 50+ KB per day of traffic.
Does anyone have any ideas? When I leave the wifi area, I turn off my email. But there still seems to be traffic on the edge network (under Settings > Usage). I prefer to do my email only in a wifi zone.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I agree. I am currently in the UK and am contending with this. i turned off my e-mail as well but I will be contacting AT&T for a credit on all of the data transfer I invouluntarily incurred while here.

  • No WIFI OR Edge network after 3.0 update on first generation

I'm working with an original 1st generation iPhone.
I updated which seemed to go well (compared to horror stories I heard from my 3G friends earlier this afternoon). After the update I noticed some major issues:
    1. I can not connect to WIFI networks
    2. I can not even connect to the Edge network (therefore the internet just straight up doesn't work).
    3. I can not access voice mail.
    4. It cleared all of my text message conversations.
    5. It cleared all of my recent calls.
    6. It reset my settings in a few of my apps.
I CAN make calls and send/receive texts.
I can live with having to deal with 4, 5, and 6, but not having 1, 2, and 3, is just ridiculous.
    Can anyone help?

I also have the original iPhone and I am also in Pittsburgh and my EDGE network is down. I did not get the software update though. Maybe the storms last night caused an issue with AT&T's network. Please let me know if you hear anything on this. Thanks!

  • Usage of Edge Network on Weekends...

Is the usage of the Edge network for e-mail and internet free on the weekends since minutes are unlimited on the weekends?

Technically it is not free, each iPhone plan has a unlimited data plan included in the monthly bill
So each month you pay to have unlimited access to the EDGE network, you not not have to pay anything extra for using any of the widgets, the Mail app or Safari

  • 2504 WLC on edge network for guest wifi

I have a 2504 WLC with a 1042 AP and I have it placed on my edge Cisco 3750 switch.
I have the management interface of the WLC set on my WAN IP 71.x.x.x subnet range, and I have the WLC doing DHCP duties with a DHCP scope of 192.168.X.0. I have my DNS servers set on external DNS servers out on the Internet.
I have two Cisco 3845 Routers on my edge network - one for each ISP with BGP protocol.
Since my native VLAN is 71.x.x.x, I added a sub interface on my main core router and gave it a 192.168.x.1 255.255.255.0 address for the gateway. Also, I added ip prefix-list iBGP seq 10 permit 192.168.x.0/24 le 32 to my main core router. On my secondary ISP router I added
ip prefix-list iBGP seq 10 permit 192.168.X.0/24 le 32, and ip prefix-list OUT seq 10 permit 192.168.x.0/24 statements.
I added VLAN 10 to my edge switch and gave it IP 192.168.x.2 255.255.255.0, and the switchports that my core router and my WLC are connected to the edge switch, are in trunk mode with encapsulation dot1q 10. The switchport on my edge switch that the AP is connected to is in switchport access mode.
I can connect to the wifi with a 192.168.x.x IP address on my laptop, but I cannot get any Internet access.
Is it possible to have the DHCP scope be in a different subnet than my WAN IP subnet, and allow guests to get to the external Internet only? Do I need to put the WLC somewhere internal on my network i.e. the DMZ and then tunnel the traffic out to the Internet with no Internal network access?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

right, and how does a 'normal/current' user access the internet?  Somwhere going to your ISP there should be some sort of NAT statement when you send interwebs traffic.
if your ISP is taking care of all of that for you, you probably need to let them know you added the subnet so they can do the NAT.

  • I receive Yahoo mail on Edge network but can't reply...

    Hi,
Thanks in advance for your help.
As my subject line states, I get all my Yahoo mail from 2 different Yahoo accounts just fine but cannot reply on the edge network. If I have a WiFi signal I can.
The error I get says "Cannot Send Mail" "The connection to the outgoig server "(null)" failed.
    Any ideas?

    Hello HMoorhouse,
You were correct in attempting to edit the SMTP settings. SMTP is the server that allows outgoing mail. I would recommend deleting the mail account as a whole and restarting.
Once the device has been restarted, got to Settings>Mail, Contacts, and Calandars
When in "Mail, Contacts, and Calandars" hit Add Account.
You will have mutiple options so you want to select "Other".
Now you need your server settings for both the incoming and outgoing mail server.
If you enter this exactly how your provider gives them to you, it should work. Make sure you know if it is pop or imap, the port number, in incoming and outgoing servers, use SSL on/off and use authentication on/off etc.
If you have all the correct settings accoridng to the provider you may want to restore the phone then try again. Restoring the phone will factor out any Apple software issues.
If you ahve questions let me know.
    Best Regards,
    Jordan Park

  • Has anyone had a problem connecting to Edge network?

Got my phone yesterday and it worked flawlessly. I drained the battery and charged it over night.
So I wake up today and try to see what the weather is going to be. It says error updating, so Im like w t f? So I try to open a webpage(using edge) and it doesn't load google and the iPhone says "Safari can't open the page because it an't fid the server."
Has anyone had this issue? Could it be the Edge network or my phone its self? I used the WiFi just now and it worked fine but I need edge to be working.
    Thanks

When it happens to me a have to do a reset of the iphone and it fixes it. Hold down the top button and the round button on the buttom of the screen together for 10 seconds until the iphone powers off. Next hold down the power buttong for a second or 2 untill you get the apple logo on the screen.
    Must be a bug.

  • Edge Network vs. Wi-Fi

I was in an area today that had a free Wi-Fi hotspot. When I launched Safari I was asked if I wanted to join the network, and I of course said yes, since it's faster than Edge.
However, the Edge network stayed on, and Safari continued to use the Edge network. I checked settings, and it indicated that I was logged onto the Wi-Fi.
Is there anyway to make sure that when you are in an area with Wi-Fi, it uses the Wi-Fi and not the Edge network?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Set speed limit to network interface

    Hi
I want build a program to set limit speed  to my network interface
for example max download speed for wlan connection  10Kb
how must edit network interface for this work
i searched but can't found anything
    thanks

Why would you want to do this?
It sounds quite suspicious to me.
Still lost in code, just at a little higher level.
i want save my monthly traffic
That doesn't make much sense. How will limiting the network speed do that?
If you limit the network speed to 20% of what it was then it will just take 5 times longer (more really due to the amount of overhead in data packets) in order to upload or download anything.
If you are on a plan which limits the amount of data via the plans network which can be uploaded and or downloaded during the plans payment time period then perhaps you should monitor the data transceived over the link during that time period.
Then write an app that turns off a NIC and will monitor the NIC so if it is enabled it is turned off again whenever some daily allowance of bandwidth is exceeded. Or perhaps write a service for that. Of course the app or service would need to know the pay
period to monitor, the amount of bandwidth provided for the pay period, constantly store bandwidth used (either sent, received or both) while the NIC is up and be designed to know for each day when to disable the NIC if necessary. And allow the NIC to be re-enabled
or re-enable the NIC when some time occurs following the previous disable of a NIC.
However you don't provide what the requirement would be other than you just want to limit bandwidth via some NIC. Which really means nothing unless multiple PC's are vying for bandwidth and you want on specific PC to be allocated more bandwidth than
    any other PC or something.
Group Policy Editor has a setting that can apparently
limit reserveable bandwidth. I don't know if setting that to %95 would only provide applications %5 of the available bandwidth. I've installed GPE on my Win 7 Home Premium PC which it does not come
with and I had to find an installer from an untrusted source in order to do that.
Recently I had a friend using a Verizon WIFI device which provides local WIFI for PC's via Verizons cell service I suppose. Apparently if the PC was left on and nobody was using it then bandwidth was used. I believe in about one 6 hour time period over %15
of the entire pay periods bandwidth allowance was used when his girlfriend let the PC on unattended. So I could see where some type of monitor app would be nice for a situation like that.
When you use few words to describe anything the result is everybody having to guess. And with regard to what you think you want to do it makes the entire thread a guess.
