Speed of iPhoto 6 on PowerPC chip

I watched the demo Jobs gave at MacWorld with iPhoto and wondered how fast the program runs on the last gen iMac with the PowerPC chip running Tiger.
Has anyone installed this yet on the above setup?
Problems installing?
Problems running?
Bugs?
Speed?
Im trying to decided weather to try and deal with the new iLife on the older machine, or just get a new machine.
Thanks

Just read where if you open the iPhoto Getting Started first it will then start working. Also a reboot helped some other users.

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD

  • Speed with iPhoto 6: Great and very slow.......

Is it just me or does the new version take forever to update titles and keywords? The old one was much faster in this regard, but the opening and overall speed of iPhoto 6 is increadible. Great job Apple. I still don't know how to merge two libraries into one. Any help?? iPhoto Library Manager does not work as of today.

  • Burn speed for iPhoto...?

    Greetings,
A friend of mine had a Mac Pro 2x 2.66 Dual Xeon, 2 GB, running Mac OS X 10.4.11. He encountered a problem burning a DVD-R from iPhoto '08. He got a media error with a Sony DVD-R disc. He says he hasn't had any problems with his dual Pioneer DVR-111D drives (firmware AB09) and this media.
Is there any way to change the write speed for iPhoto '08?
    TIA

Did he try another Sony disk? It might be just one disk.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Speeding up iphoto

Have just imported all pics into iphoto. I am using different libraries already but my main library contains 3,500 images and is 8.5Gb. iphoto is positively crawling and slowing all other apps up at the same time so working as it is will be impractical. Any hints as to how to use what I have and get more speed or suggestions of practical utilities that will enable me to make the current library smaller but allow me to switch readily between libraries would be much appreciated. Will I have similar problems if I upgrade to iphoto 8. Thanks

    Jeremy
I have a library on my iMac with 16k+ images and taking 40gigs of disk space with no speed issue. You need to look to other areas for the cause of the issue:
    1. How big is your HD and how much free space on it?
    2. How much RAM do you have?
    3. Have you tried rebuilding the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Slow restore speed for iPhoto library

After iPhoto '11 destroyed my iPhoto library (known bug--do not open iPhoto '11 until you run software update), I am trying to restore from my Time Capsule. My restore speed seems ridiculously slow. I have gotten about 1gb of the 86gb file in the last hour. I am connected via Cat6 ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to my MB Pro. I can download files off the internet at much greater speeds than this is moving. I have rebooted the Time Capsule and the laptop. The original and subsequent backups go much faster.
Any ideas? I don't really have 32 hours to leave this thing hard wired to the Time Capsule.

As an update, after 30 hours of copying the 86gb file, something happened and the process crapped out with a cryptic message about finding "" (double quotation marks). Could not make sense of the message, and I was 77GB into the copy. I think that means at least most of the pics made it across.
I purchased Back-in-Time to try and copy the file to a different machine. I was able to mount the backup sparse bundle (after I deactivated Time Machine on the original host) and see the file with Back-in-Time on another machine. The copy is proceeding with some serious pace more appropriate to a giagbit ethernet link, and it looks like it will only take a couple of hours.

  • Intel Quad core  speed .vs I5 or I7 chip

Can anyone tell me if there is any appreciable speed increase going from the Standard Intel Qaud core processor up to
the i5 or i7 chip for use with Photoshop CS4?  I am trying to buy a new machine and can't tell whether the higher end chips will give me any speed advantage for the extra money.  I plan on having 8GB memory no matter what I buy  with high end graphics card on a Windows 7 machine.
    Thank you!

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3704&p=8
Decide for yourself but a system based on i5 750 isn't that much more expensive compared to one based on C2Q. Also note that the LGA-775 (the socket for Core 2 Quad and Duo) is basically dead, there won't be a lot more CPU's released for that socket.
I also wouldn't bother with high end video cards unless you're planning on working with 3D a lot

  • Will making more Photo Library's help speed iPhoto?

Ok, so I have about 13,000 photos in iPhoto. they've been collecting for years. I have videos in there as well.
    It's going very slow.
I've tried rebuilding the library and stuff, but i was thinking...
Would creating multiple Libraries help speed it up?
    I could create a Library for like 2003-2005, 2006-2008, 2009-2011...etc
and then i can just keep the most recent one open at all times.
Would this actually speed up iPhoto?
I don't mind having to restart and load a new Library when I want to find old photos, but I do want to keep using iPhoto to organize and manage my photos.

So what would be the benefit of having several Libraries then in iPhoto?
Generally there are no advantages and several disadvantages - it is strictly a personal issue - if you for any reason want multiple libraries do it - but there is generally no reason to do that
Also, are there any other opinions for speeding it up a bit?
Maybe - depends on many things - for some people web syncs are a big issue at start up and turning all of them off helps - sharing can be a speed issue - without specifics of your system and exactly what you mean by "speed issues" everything is just wild guesses

  • Transferring iPhoto albums from old macBook Pro to new - need help!

I am using the firewire to firewire connection to create a disk of my old computer on the desktop of my new computer. It is imperative that I transfer my iPhoto data from my old laptop to my new one with all the labels and albums / folders intact. I have 4 years of photographic microscope data from patient laboratory tests on my old hard drive. These folders are labeled with the patient identifiers and the date of test as well as the diagnosis. I need to have these data on my new computer so I can pull up archived photos to compare new results with past ones. However, when I go to transfer the photos from the old computer the images are only available as "raw" data - that is, I cannot access them as they are arranged in my old computer: folders that have albums by date, subject and lab test. The only images that I can access are what is seen when they are originally imported from the camera (e.g. dsc-0001, etc - not my labels, or my tags, my albums or folders: not "Ms Smith, 12-21-06; positive", etc).
Is there a way that I can import my photos from the old computer into the new one and keep my folders, albums, tags, labels, etc? Or are these data destined to be lost to the archives?
    Any help is gratefully appreciated

You should be able to copy your iPhoto library directly to the new computer. It's /Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library. Drag it to the same location on your new computer. Also copy /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iphoto.plist.

    Migration Assistant tips and tricks
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Iphoto, the App Store, iMessage problems on OSX 10.8.5

I have a couple of problems.
Firstly, my imessage does not work. When I send messages it does not deliver them, and puts this little red exclamation point next to the message. When Imessge is not active i recieve old texts from weeks ago in the top right hand cornor of my computer. When i click on it and want to send an imessage it does not let me.
Second, iphoto. Is there any way to speed up iphoto? It runs espically so compared to other programs. I realize that I do have around 10,000 picutures, but shouldnt it be able to handle it?
Lastly, the App Store. This gives me the most difficulties. I have updates and it will not let me download them. I have to accept purchases but just like the downloads, when i click on the accept button it will not actually do it. It just clicks it. One of the biggest problems is that it will not let me even sign in the my account. I have tried different tactics but everytime i click on a sign in option, it does the same thing as when i click download or accept. How do i fix this? Do I uninstall the app store? but then i dont know how to get it back.
Note: Imove, iphoto, and bascally everything else came with the mac when i bought it. I did not buy these separate from the app store and such.
This is getting very frustrating. Thank you for your help if there is any!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Aperture 3 and MobileMe Galleries created in iPhoto

I wanted to post this to hopefully help someone else should they run into the same thing.
I recently upgraded from point and shoot camera's to a higher quality camera, so I also decided that it was time to upgrade from iPhoto to something better.  I decided on Aperture as I am not quite ready to commit to the expense and time to learn something as complex as Photoshop.
Well, the first time I opened Aperture and told it to import my iPhoto library, it worked without any difficulty.  But, I noticed something was missing.  My MobileMe galleries where not displayed in the inspector window for Aperture.  I could not for the life of me, figure out how to get them to show up in there either.
I went to the Apple store and talked to some Aperture users there and no one could seem to tell me how to fix this.  It was even more frustrating because all of my photo albums from FaceBook came up in Aperture just fine.
Finally in a last ditch, hail mary pass, of an idea, I went to the web UI for my MobileMe galleries.  I figured that maybe if I edited something about those galleries, they would then show up in Aperture.
Well, I went into the properties for one of the galleries that I was not seeing in Aperture, and low and behold, there in the properties was an option to choose what application that gallery would sync to.  The only options are iPhoto or Aperture, so I changed each gallery to show Aperture as the chosen app to sync with.
Finally they now show in Aperture, of course, as you might expect, they no longer show in iPhoto.
I have no idea why the Import process does not warn you about this, and / or offer to change them for you, but it was very frustrating.
If this can help someone else new to Aperture to avoid this frustration, then I am glad.

Thanks Richard, very helpful. I wondered why I couldn't see my old mobileme galleries in Aperture.
I have swapped between iPhoto '09, Aperture 3, iPhoto '11 and now back to Aperture. Whilst I love the ease of use and relative speed of iPhoto, Aperture's adjustments and masters/versions handling has the edge for me now that my masters collection is too big for my MBP. And with a clean install of Lion my machine now seems more responsive than it has been for a while.
Changing the setting of each gallery is a bit dull, is there a global 'manage mobile me galleries with iPhoto/Aperture' setting anywhere?
