Speed of processor is being limited by system firmware after BIOS update

Hello,
I have updated the BIOS of my G510 to the latest version, which is 3.09. But after this update, I have noticed "The speed of processor is being limited by system firmware" entries at the Windows System event log. They are like that:
"The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 5 seconds since the last report."
I'm getting this message for all the cores, from 0 to 3.
Why is this happening? And what can I do, should I downgrade the BIOS to the previous version?
Thanks

Hello pka4916,
You’re having a problem with the speed of your processor.
Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
If the problem is still not fixed Try to roll back you BIOS to a version that was working correctly.
Here is a link that will walk you through the steps.
Let me know how everything goes.
Have a good day.

  • Messages in event log about processor speed limited by system firmware

On my new G50-80 I get the following event log messages: "The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report." and this repeats for all 4 processors, on every startup. What does this mean and how to fix? The BIOS is factory original (version BOCN73WW)I have not tweaked speedstep and so on (yet), the machine is on AC power.and I don't know what's DOS, and is it much worse than DDOS.  Thanks,-- dd

    hi dd,
    Is this item your laptop?
If yes, when the machine is plugged-in and running on High Performance power plan, can you try to open a few graphics intensive applications and observe the CPU frequency if it reaches 2.4Ghz or goes into to 3Ghz (turbo boost).
If you don't have graphics intensive apps, try to:
    1. Download and install Heavyload and run a stress test on the CPU.
    2. Run Coretemp and observe the frequency and the temperature on the cores #0,1,2,3
It'll also help if you can post a screenshot of the results. As for the disk percentage being high, it's likely that there's an app running in the background that's constantly writing to the drive (i.e. Antivirus software running a scan in the background ro a torrent app downloading in the background).

  • Core speed increase after BIOS update

Hi everybody! My notebook is a Compaq Presario V5025EA with Mobile AMD Sempron 3300+ (Albany) and 2x256 DIMM banks. Since I recently updated the BIOS from version F.41 to version F.54, I'm having some troubles. The core-temperature is now about 88°C, the fan became very noisy and often the notebook shuts down automatically (I think cause the too high temperature). Trying to understand the cause of that, I noticed these differences in the CPUID report, before and after the BIOS update: - With BIOS F.41
    Core Speed: 796.0 MHz
    Multiplier x FSB: 4.0 x 199.0 MHz
Stock frequency: 2000 MHz - With BIOS F.54
    Core Speed: 1989.9 MHz
    Multiplier x FSB: 10.0 x 199.0 MHz
    Stock frequency: 2000 MHz
Is this core speed change normal? Is it the cause of the high temperature? What can I do to mantain it in accettable ranges? I tried to downgrade till to BIOS F.41 A (the F.41 isn't available on this site), but nothing changed. In the BIOS there aren't unfortunately any options  to customize the CPU speed.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Your laptop uses the original AMD64 system which was the first to have an integrated memory controller called the hypertransport bus. Strictly speaking there is not a front side bus as such. Nothing has changed in your system, the new BIOS is reporting the situation more accurately. On AMD laptops there are always heat issues. The new BIOS may have changed the way the fan works or it may just be time to go in there and clean out around the heatsink and fan and apply new thermal compound. I see a lot of laptops and older AMD models always run hot. Even new ones run hotter than their Intel cohorts. You do not see as many older AMD laptops; they generally die before they get old (to paraphrase The Who). You need to keep the fan vents elevated and perhaps consider a notebook cooler and also do the clean-out and new thermal compound thing as suggested above. Also be sure AMD Cool 'n Quiet is installed and enabled. Open the system applet (I assume you use Windows XP) and see the noted clock speed. You should be showing about an 800 mhz clock speed most of the time rather than the full 2000 mhz. This will tell you the processor is properly downclocking when it is not under load. Also check the properties of the processor driver in the Device Manager. It should show up as amdk7.sys and not just processor.sys. This will tell you the proper processor driver is installed.

  • System crash after recent update

    Hi all,
As of yesterday, my laptop has started crashing after a little while open (sometimes right away, sometimes ten minutes in, sometimes right after bios). I believed it was to do with the recent alsa-utils update and I downgraded that package which helped for a little bit. When it updated again and the core dump from the previous update disappeared, I upgraded and the problem starting happening again. Then I downgraded and no change.
So I think it is not to do with alsa anymore...but I can find no information at all in dmesg or journalctl. There seem to be no errors, warnings whatsoever. I have tried chrooting in and looking at all the logs but to no avail.
The update that broke my system installed the following:
    alsa-lib alsa-utils gcc-libs gcc isl kmod libcdio-paranoia pyalpm namcap
I have since downgraded both isl and kmod and it looks my laptop is running okay so far. After this update I also updated the kernel, but running from the fallback initramfs did not change the issue so I don't think it was that either.
I have trawled the forums for recent problems with recent updates .ut did not find anything apart from the alsactl core dump.
Does anyone know if there are any problems with the above packages? Or if there are other important logs other than journactl, dmesg, and pacman.log I can try looking at to troubleshoot this? I apologise for not being able to provide much more information, as I said I can't seem to find anything out of the ordinary in the aforementioned logs.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Crash still occurs...now found this in dmesg

I have looked online about these though, and so far it looks like it doesn't actually make anyone crash

  • System failure after critical updates auto downloaded on HP-DV7 17.3" AMD Quad Core

After critical updates system auto reboot closed programs and went into reboot mode but system will not reboot and cannot run recovery successfully. Windows tries to load files and get to the start windows screen but will not complete. Not sure if it will bring me back to orig. format, was not able to find a restore point and do not have any reboot disks. Still under warranty but no list of available service people in area. Easy to buy hard to get service! UGH! HELP PLEASE. Thanks

    Hi:
Make your own windows 7 repair/reinstallation disk and use the repair option to see if you can get it fixed.
Use the repair with command prompt method and try the fixboot command.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392
    Here's how to make a W7 installation/repair disk.
I just copy and paste my standard instructions for using this disk to reinstall windows.
You don't need to enter the product key to repair windows, only to use this disk as a last resort to reinstall windows.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • E31 - Front FAN at full speed after bios update !!

    Hello,
we have a Thinkstation E31 (2555-22G), and today after the Bios update with the Lenovo system update tool the front Fan (near the SATA connectors) is at full speed constantly. it is just impossible to stay in front of this computer because of the noise, i had to disconnect the fan.
I tried to flash to an older version available on the site but it doesn't change anything.
I tried to reset the BIOS to default, and also removed the battery from the motherboard.
I found in a faq but for another model to remove the power cable and press the start button during 10 seconds.
I didn't find something working, there is no fan control setting in the bios, or it is well hidden...
    What can i do ??
    Thanks for your help.

The beeps you're hearing are part of the CMOS clear process, so they are normal.  Once you hear the beeps, you should be OK to shut it down again.
I'm not necessarily convinced a bad fan is the cause of the issue if you truly only experienced the higher fan speed after a BIOS update.  But I also don't want to work on the same issue from two angles/paths at the same time....so I'm going to say let's wait and see what happens with the service route first and go from there.
If you happen to try it again or see the message again...I'm curious what error codes you're seeing after the system starts and you get the two POST beeps.  A message about corrupted settings sounds like it could be important  A picture might be helpful here if you can capture one.

  • Satellite Pro P100 GPU Fan off or full speed after Bios-update to 4.20

    Hello,
after installing the brandnew Bios-update 4.20 the GPU fan is when the notebook is cool off. While working with it the GPU temperature rises up to 100C (very very hot), then the fan begins to run on medium speed and the GPU cools down. After a restart, eg. next day, the fan always runs on medium or high speed (very noisy!!). With the the bios version before this problem didn't appear.
Has someone the same problem with his notebook?
Did anyone have the Bios-update before 4.20 and can send it to me???
    Greets
    Rommulaner

    Hi all,
I've got a similar problem. After updating the BIOS of my SP P100 (PSPAHE) to 4.2 on of the fans runs constantly. I was very astonished about the WinPhlash Software anyway: I just wanted to see what it looks like, and it started updating BIOS virus-like automatically without any message or confirmation etc.
With the first reboot I got a bluescreen immediately after Vista started booting. With the following reboot, the system started properly - everything seemed to be ok. Since then the system obviously can't control the fan anymore.
The bluescreen-error is reproduceable - it occurs after each trial. I already tried to update BIOS with a freshly installed Vista (Recovery DVD) bfore installing a single problem - same result.
I only see 2 possibilities to perhaps solve the problem: hopefully a re-downgrade to 4.0 can successfully be done. Second possibility would perhaps be to remove Vista and install XP instead hoping that the BIOS update doesn't hang up then.
Unfortunately, the previous BIOS version is not on the support pages. . If anyone gets hold of it pls. post here.

  • Troubles in dual boot system after BIOS update

    Hello:
    PC: Thinkpad T500
    1. I had for one year Linux Fedora 10 and Vista Ultimate working in dual boot with Grub, no problems at all.
Three days ago Lenovo support recommended I update my BIOS from 2.07 to 3.12, as I had some intermitent Sleep problems in Vista. Then my problems started.
    2. First, after updating the BIOS from Vista (dowloaded the exe, double clicked it, gone through the whole sequence with no errors), upon the first restart, the screen was black and I couldn't get in BIOS with F1 and the same happened during other power-off/power on sequences.
    3. Now, I've discovered that the best I can do is wait for 10 min after restart in order to get a prompt from ThinkVantage, then Grub boots only the Linux system which works OK.
    4. I can't get the dual boot message from Grub, and I can't get any Windows DVD to be taken at boot (I've got full backups from both Control Panel and from ThinkAdvantage backup facility) in order to ru Windows repair.
    5. I can go during the ThinkAdvantage to BIOS, the new version seems there (not sure if completely operational), but whey can't I see it with F1?
Is the presence of ThinkAdvantage something special in dual-boot systems or wrt to the BIOS install? Should I do something special about it? I just don't know.
    Any ideas?

Strange.  I don't have a clue, but I have seen posts here that recoverd from strangeness after a BIOS update by unplugging from the AC mains, removing the battery, and then pressing the power button several times.  The last time, hold the button for 10 seconds or so.
That is really a total WAG, but maybe worth a try.
Out of curiousity, what do you see when grub finally loads.  I take it that it isn't your original boot menu.  Do you have grub installed in the MBR, the boot sector of the Linux partition, or both?  Is the Linux partition (or Linux boot partition if you have boot + root) the 1st one on the drive, or _after_ the vista partition.
[edit] You didn't ask, but IMNSHO multibooting a modern laptop isn't really the easiest way to run multiple OSs.  I run Linux, Solaris, and OS X in VMs under Win 7 on my T400.  They run well, and that approach avoids issues like you are having.  The Lenovo ThinkVantage boot-time stuff and R&R are rather fragile.  Changes in partitioning and MBR configuration can break them.   BIOS and other updates, and Windows repairs can break the multi-boot setup.
There are several ways to set up VMs, but VMWare Player is what I use.  The latest version is free and quite usable.

  • Satellite C850 - Low fan speed after BIOS update

    Hello,
So I have my Satellite C850-PSKCEV bios updated around 6 months ago to version 6.80 (I bought my laptop in 2012), and since then the fan is running at low speeds and will never run full speed as before, and as a consequence the laptop overheats prematurely and very fast, and even when the laptop is not in use but left running it does overheat, also gaming is not even possible as any game that I run (even with the lowest settings) gets a fps drop every 5 seconds and lasts 5-10 seconds which renders even the lightest games unplayable, also I am afraid of the continuous overheat to damage the laptop's internal components.
I did clean the fan and vents from dust and there is not even one particle inside them and yet the fan won't run fast and I can't feel but very slight airflow from the vents as apposed to the strong one before this problem.

I think you were trying to update bios via windows mode.. !
try removing battery from your motherboard and also reset bios via jumper settings..
    or
    Disconnect all external devices first.
    1-remove power cord and battery
2-press power button for 20 seconds
3-reinstall only power cord for first startup.
    4-power on

I upgraded my Satellite A500 PSAM3E model to the newest BIOS 1.50, now the Intel speed step not working!
My CPU is always 2GHz+, I chagned Power Plan to balanced, but no change... with previous the CPU was around 800 MHz.
When I try to change Windows 7 power management and set maximum CPU performance to 50 or 80% the system freezes.

    Hey Szaby59,
Which older BIOS version did you use before update to 1.50?
I also use the maximum CPU performance option for Eco mode (50%) but this does work properly.
Furthermore it would be interesting to know if you use factory settings or your own Windows installation. Normally after using Toshiba recovery disk you dont have to install any Toshiba tools anymore. Everything is preinstalled on your notebook.
