Speed on 2 computers

Hi, I have a strange problem:
I have a desktop and a laptop and a new internetconnection. When I use the desktop, I get downloads of up to about 3 Mbyte per second. However, if I change the same ethernet cable from the desktop on the laptop, I only get about 90 kbyte per second. I (obviously) want to solve this and get fast downloads on my laptop as well.
The desktop was just updated with pacman. The laptop needs a 545 MB downloads by pacman to get the latest software. As you can imagine, I'd like my network fast before I download that chunk of software...
For some reason, connecting the laptop through eth0 or through ra0 (wireless) does not make any difference; both are slow. The laptop is about 3 years old.
My question is: are there any network settings that I can use to speed up the internet? It seems logic that I should be able to make the network faster...

Not sure on your internet speed questions, but couldn't you just copy the packages over from the desktop to the laptop? They're in /var/cache/pacman/pkg

  • Extremely slow speeds on Windows Computers with 5th Generation AirPort Extreme

I just got a new refurbished AirPort Extreme 5th generation. Everything works great for all of my OS X devices and iOS Devices. I am getting my ISPs speeds when doing tests. The issue is when I am using Windows devices. My roommate has a desktop and a netbook and both are getting extremely slow speeds. Speeds like .07Mbps down. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

You have no large file?? Really.. in the whole computer there is not a windows update file.. a backup file... a movie download file.. nothing.. ??
Anyway that is irrelevant.. the issue is wireless.
Download the latest drivers from the wireless manufacturer.
You will need to find out what wireless card is used and locate the correct download for that model.
On the Airport it is well worth doing the following tests.
    1. Change the name to SMB standard.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric.
So if your wireless name is Fred Blog's Airport Extreme wireless
    Plesae change it to AEwifi
    2. Take off all security for a test.
    3. Set channels.. I am guessing the computers are only using 2.4ghz, so set 11,6, 1 in that order.
No improvement.. just put the security back to WPA2 Personal with pure alphanumeric password..
Try and test new drivers and use no firewalls on the computer.. ensure that the computer is correctly set for home network.
Beyond that it is just incompatible.

  • Very slow transfer speed between 2 computers in the same network

    I recently bought a new laptop (Lenove G510) with win 8.1 pre-installed.
When i download files of the internet, my speed is ok, for wireless, but when tranfering files between computers (The other computer is a win 7), the transfer speed is really slow (2-4 MB/s). The transfers takes forever, and are relly unstable. It bounces from 1 - 4 Mb/s all the time and will not stabilize.
The same applys when streaming to other devices (Media Center). The video being streamd will just go frame by frame, and it is no fun watching...
Why is my transfer speed in local networsk so slow?? How can i fix this?
I use AVG Anitvirus, and I have tried disabeling it before transer, whitout results...
I have also updated BIOS, Chipset and the driver for the wireless network card...
I can also mention that when I turn my computer on, the internet connection is lost to all other devices... I then need to reset the router, and then the connection is fine again. This was never a problem before I got Windows 8.1, and is not a problem while the computer is turned of.
In advanced, thansk for any replys/tips

  • Inconsistency in speed between two computers

Well, today we got fios internet installed in our house. While one computer regularly has download speeds of 17mb, the other computer barely goes up to 5 mb. What could be the problem considering that the computers are just 2 meters away from each other?

They both show the same signal, and they are relatively 15 feet from the router.

  • Diffferent speeds on two computers

I have two identical laptops albeit with some differences in the software installed. Same antivirus installed on each. One gives 40Mb/s download, the other 15Mb/s. Speed tests using the same cable directly into the router.
Anyone any ideas what this may be please?

are all drivers up to date using the manufacturer's web sites not windows updates

  • Very slow DOWNLOAD speeds compared to other household computers?

I am connecting via Wireless. All other computers are connecting via wireless aswell. The same router is used for all computers. On all the other computers in the house, download speeds are up to 3 Mbps. On my computer, download speeds are up to 20-50 Kbps. I don't understand why. My download speed used to be 1 Mbps, and that changed about a month ago. I don't understand why. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

I would have to disagree with ornahp.  Being a computer technician myself, it seems more likely that the computer experiencing the issue is configured differently (as Smith6612 indicated).
There could be several reasons why 1 computer experiences different download speeds compared to another.  Without knowing the specs, programs, and physical location of each computer and what is between the computers and router, there is no real way to give a difinitive answer/solution.
Also, how are you testing/monitoring your download speeds?  Are you downloading items from a website, downloading items through a torrent/magnet, using a speed test site?
Your computer could be infected with malicious software (virus, spyware, etc)
Your computer could have multiple "Auto-Update" programs running (Microsoft Updates, Adobe Updates, etc)
Your computer might be connecting using older technology (not likely, but possible) 802.11b compared to 802.11g
The times that you are download might be during higher traffic times causing more load on verizon's network, decreasing your speed.
Other computers on your network may be using bandwidth shrinking the access that you have.
These are only a few things that can affect download speeds.

  • Problems with the Fios 20/5 connection speed in my area dropping down to less than 3mbs.

I have written out a flyer that I plan to go door to door with. Since I am under contract with Verizon, I am forced to honor my side of the contract. Even if they are allowed to make me pay for a service that I am not completely getting. I am very displeased and as soon as my contract is up, I will change back to My local cable companies all in one that does not require a contract and has no issue such as the one I am having.
Do you have Verizon Fios Internet?
Are you on the 20/5 connection?
If so, you may not be getting the speed you are paying for. I am on a 20/5 connection and when my computer is on for longer than an hour the internet download speed with Verizon Fios starts to slow down until it is below 3mbs. It takes about 24 hours to get down to 3mbs but only about an hour or two to get down to about 6-7mbs when I am paying for 20mbs…
I have 3 computers in my home that have Windows Vista, Windows XP home edition and Windows Media Edition 2005. All of the computers run into this same exact issue, I have tried every setting I could think of with my 24 years of computer technical experience. I finally took one machine with Windows XP and ran a full format on the hard drive and reinstalled a fresh Windows Xp Operating system onto the hard drive so it is a bare bones OS. This way there is no other software on the machine that could possibly be causing the problem and found that when I connected online through Verizon Fios the machine still ran into the same exact issue. This proves to me that the issue is not on any of my machines.
Now all of this time my buddy that lives 1.2 miles away from my house has been having the same issue with three computers at his home also. He has Windows Vista on two machines and Windows XP Pro on one.
When I concluded that it was a Verizon Fios issue, after a few months of trying to get by, researching, diagnosing and losing much information in order to verify it was on Verizon’s side, I contacted technical support at Verizon’s online website. The agent and I went through the regular procedure that anyone would have to go through and I patiently explained what I had done to try to diagnose the issue. The agent came to the conclusion that he could not figure out the problem so he guessed that the Verizon router/modem may be the issue and told me he would send me a new one by mail.
I received the new Verizon router/modem, installed it and had to call to have it activated. Afterward it still had the same exact issue as the prior router/modem. So now we know it’s not my computers, it’s not the router/modem. My Verizon router/modem is connected right at the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is the box that connects the fiber-optics to your home, usually just inside or outside your garage wall. Mine is just outside…
From here my buddy, who has been having this problem also the entire time, called the local office of Verizon Fios and an installer was setup to come over to his home and trouble shoot the issue. My buddy called me and told me when the installer was headed to his home and I met him at his home to see what the installer found and in hope that my issue would be fixed at the same time. The installer went through the system at his house and was frustrated about not finding the reason for the issue and ready to leave without fixing anything. I simply asked that he stay long enough to see the issue present itself within an hour-hour and a half.
His laptop itself already showed the speed drop from 20mbs to between 16-17mbs, it was on its way down. He basically told us something that online tech support already stated to me, it is extremely difficult to prove it is on Verizon’s side. In other words it is extremely difficult to prove it, in a way that will convince Verizon to check its own servers, routers and software updates to their own systems. The installer, good guy, couldn’t/wouldn’t stay but we did convince him not to simply drop the issue. He called shop and they sent another installer out to take over the issue.
The new installer, great guy, got up to speed on what was already done at my buddies home. The first installer, checked and replaced the Verizon router/modem, checked the wiring and splitters. Basically went through the entire system up to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), the box that connects the fiber-optics to your home. He pulled and replaced the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), thinking that perhaps the unit was compromised. While he was doing this job a tech was called and asked to stop by for assistance with the issue. The tech checked the computers inside and tried to do some settings that the main office informed him to try. I explained to the tech that the same issue was happening at my house, that I went through every setting I could think of and find online to help alleviate the issue. After some shop talk about what I had tried, including the full format and reinstall of the operating system on one of my machines, he just as I came to the conclusion that it couldn’t be with the computers and since everything that had to do with the Verizon Fios system from the street to the end-user computer had been checked, verified and/or replaced, the issue had to be coming from Verizon’s main office.
The installer had already checked the main at the road that has the 3x2 green service cover on it by the side walk. Everything was in good working order. The tech called the main office to see if my buddy and I were on the same hub, basically a big splitter that continues the service from the main office to the homes, we were not. So that was ruled out…
My understanding of the system ends there. The only other components I know of are the Main branch’s routers, servers and software.
Verizon had a new connection speed added to their system, 25/15 about the same time our issue began. So I am guessing that when they updated the system to include this new connection speed they corrupted the software for the 20/5 connection.
We have been waiting to hear from the tech that was at my buddy’s house, to see if the issue will be dealt with. My buddy has called him a couple of times and he has mentioned that he is trying to get it addressed and to call back if we hadn’t heard from him. He remembered who he and I were and what the issue was, so I believe he is taking it seriously. How far he can move the issue is beyond me…
I want to add that my buddy and I have been customers with the all in one package from Verizon Fios since their services have moved into our area, about a year and a half… It has only been since about June that this issue has presented itself, before then we were on 7th heaven with the speeds. We couldn’t have been more than happy with the services.
This issue has caused that to all go afoul, not only do the speeds get down to less than 3mbs but the speed is not smooth at all. Rather the 3mbs speed is stop and go, freezing in between at times, very choppy. Barely usable at times, unless you restart the computers and start over.
We are hoping that anyone with Verizon Fios Internet Services will keep an eye on their speeds by going to http://speedtest.net and doing tests to verify they are getting the speeds they are paying Verizon for.
This is what it will take for Verizon to take this issue seriously is to gather everyone on the system that may be having the same issue. I believe it is everyone that is within the 1.2 miles from my house to my buddy’s and will distribute flyers to each and every house in between.
If you find that your speed is not as fast as it should be please contact me and I will add you to the list, this way we can see exactly how far this problem covers and perhaps it will also help to show a pattern and understanding as to why the issue is present in the first place.
    My contact information,
I have left this out here, you can contact me on these forums...

Actually what this came down to was an issue between Windows Vista and an Ethernet Card on one of the machines in each of our local networks.
Even though our two machines are 6 years apart, we both have the same ethernet adapter on our main desktops. A RealTek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. It seems that the adapter does not work at the 20mbs download speeds with Vista. For some reason the adapter does not shut down when the computer does? I don't understand why but it doesn't, it keeps the connection alive. I removed the ethernet cable and pulled the power cable and had my two other computers still connected to the network and found that the issue was resolved. The way I found out was that I used the connections on my main computer to hook up one I had laying around and through further testing found the problem no longer existed...
Then I realized that my buddy and I installed Windows Vista at about the same time, a couple of months ago. Funny how you can forget an important detail like that. Then I remembered that he had the same identical ethernet adapter as I did, I had noticed that while trouble shooting his computer at his home but didn't think it was important at the time. Until the issue was narrowed down to the adapter, then it all seemed to all fall into line.
Quite humbling... In the end, anyone who has Windows Vista and this NIC probably will have problems with the 20mbs download speed of the computers on their own networks. I tried the latest Vista driver from RealTek and also tried to roll back the driver, with no success....
Back at the beginning when we first had fios installed in our homes there wasn't an issue when we had the 10/2 speeds and had Vista. Then we decided to change from Vista to XP because we both were having issues as to what programs you could use and which you could not, shortly after having fios installed. Then when verizon upgraded us to 20/5 we were amazed at the speed and still had no issue because we had XP on our main computers with the RealTek adapters...
We reinstalled Vista because it seemed like we were having more issues with XP by getting hit with Antivirus2008 and its variants and thought it time for a change back...
It didn't really hit us that Vista could be the culprit because we both have a laptop in our networks that have had Vista on them from the get go when there were no issues... We also didn't notice just how bad it was right away and over time kind of left the Vista install out of the equation.
Just strange that one computer can effect all the other computers on the network, even when it is shut down...
I allowed the other two computers to run 24hours and the issue did not present itself, when I added the main computer with the RealTek adapter back to the mix it reappeared. The Realtek adapter is the only real common denominator between his machine and mine.
So now we have three choices,
We can go back to Windows XP.
We can buy a new NIC or a wireless card to replace the RealTek...
Hopefully this post will help anyone else who runs into this problem, it has been very frustrating to say the least...
Thanks to everyone for their help and I apologize for complaining about verizon when it was not a verizon issue. I came to the conclusion that the only part verizon really played was upgrading us to a 20/5 tier which I am thankful for...
Would be nice if this card was on a list that Verizon support could use to troubleshoot , diagnose or eliminate for future support issues.

  • Wireless Network, 2 Mac Laptops, (Air and Pro) 2 different download speeds

I have a (Frontier) 24 mbs DSL broadband plan, wired to my desktop, wireless for everything else in the house.  I get 24 mbs DL, 2 UL) over ethernet and (wirelessly) in every location in the house except for one room (or so I thought).  At first, I thought it was an interference, modem/router location issue, until I checked speeds on both computers, simultaneously, side-by side..  (A mid-2011 MBA and 2010-2011 MBP.  These LTs are not heavily loaded with content or applications, and tend to be used mostly for surfing, streaming, minor work tasks.).  In the room in question, the MBP gets almost 24 mbs steadily.  The MPA, on the other hand, never gets higher that 15 mbs, and fluctuates wildly, sometimes between tests held back to back. Drops as low as 1 mbs, bounces around 3 to 6 to 2 etc.  All over the place without regard to time of day, likely high traffic times.
Signal comes into a zyxel router/modem combo (Frontier says "bonded pair" last mile wiring requires this hardware for which it doesn't charge.)
    Any ideas:?
    Thanks.

Please check the speed of your connection on this site.
Then start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Check again. Then restart as usual and post the results.

  • Tips for optimizing for speed?

It may be awhile before I can afford a new computer, so I was wondering of any tips for optimizing my current computer for speed.
*Of particular interest is the CPU usage graph of the Activity Monitor: why isn't the graph pegged* when an application is running an intensive process? In other words, when I am doing something with the computer, I expect it to be giving 200% effort (because I have two CPUs in my computer). So why isn't it?
And what can I do to fix it? How can I get the CPUs to work at full power? I've already maxed out the memory, using quality (Kingston) RAM.
I fully realize that the bottleneck in speed in most computers is the hard drive. I do what I can in that regard (keep them optimized, repair permissions, and so on).
+*I just want the CPUs to be giving their all when required.*+ Is there a third party app that would help? Any tips, advice or suggestions will be appreciated!
And, on a related note, why was it, when Macs used PowerPCs, were we told that "RISC always beats CISC"? That is, PowerPCs were faster and more efficient than Intel chips? But now, with Macs using Intel exclusively, we are told as to how wonderful Intel chips are? Any thoughts on that?

Software applications and OS don't, and it is a myth of sorts that 100% per core is being efficient, sometimes it is, usually it is not.
There isn't much bandwidth to begin with, and some have tried 10K VelociRaptor in their G5 1.8s only to find the WD Black 640GB was just as good or better, but you don't want drives older than a year ago in there.
Mac Pro used - and there are some 2009's 2.66GHz 4-core $1800, or from Apple, or look at $900 iMac even.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_pro
A lot of applications are not optimized or can't or are still stuck in pre-multi-threaded era, especially under PPC code.
And what pray tell instead of generalities are you running, so people can provide more specifics?

  • Help with internet speed on WRT54GL.

Just got my WRT54GL v1.1 firmware 4.30.13 a week ago.  My AT&T (bellsouth) DSL is much slower when connected to the router.  I have a Westell 6100 modem which is in bridged mode and DHCP is off.  Connected direct to the modem, I get 700-800Kb/s(down).  When I am connected through the router, I only get around 300-400Kb/s(down).  I get the same results both wireless and wired.  I have tried turning the firewall on the router off, enabling QoS on a specified port,  and disabling wireless.  Any other ideas that I can try would be greatly appreciated.    I was trying to fix this with the stock firmware, but would going with tomato be the best fix?
My setup is a desktop, laptop, and ps3 (all wired connections).  PPPoE setup with always on enabled.  DHCP setup for 3 ip's.  Need more info, let me know if I am forgeting something.  THanks again.

Basically when you update the firmware of your Router, it solves all the problem...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
While you Re-configure all the settings on you Router... On the Router setup page, you need to change the MTU size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings...
On the Wireless Tab.... You need to change the Wireless Channel to : 11-2.462GHz to avaoid Interference.... And your Computers will work perfecly fine...
Set the security on your Router to WPA....
Click on Advance Wireless Settings... and Change the Becon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold : 2306 and RTS Threshold : 2307 and save settings...
Now you can test the Internet Speed on your Computers...

  • Poor drive copy speed on 27" IMac??

I am a long time Mac user. My first was a 128. So I am not inexperienced with Macs. Rather than carry a computer back and forth to work, I have a computer at both at work and at home and carry my working files on an Aegis Apricorn mini Firewire 400 drive. I keep a backup of this drive at both locations. Recently I started using a 27" IMac at work. I have to use an adapter with the drive due to Apple switching to FW800. On older Macs with FW400 ports, I could backup 35 Gigs in about 25 minutes. Now this same backup takes 15 hours!
I have tried everything. I bought an Apricorn USB mini drive and tried using that. The backup requires 9 hours! The USB requires a similar amount of time on my older 24" IMac at home. From past experience, I would expect USB to be slower. My concern here is that I am guessing the fact that there is no longer a true FW400 port is the root of my problem. I suspected it could be the adpater. So I bought a different brand. Same result.
I spent an hour and a half on the phone with Apple the other day. No help. They pushed me up to an engineer. We went through everything and he agreed that the copy times were ridiculous. He took my email address and said he wanted to check this out further and would send me an email with a phone number to reach him. He never sent the email. I am getting VERY frustrated. We bought four 27" IMacs and all are having issues with slow internet speeds (one third the speed of Windows computers)and slow copy speeds to external drives. All are running 10.6.3.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Better yet... Is there a solution? We intended to expand the use of Macs in our office. Now unless we fix these problems... Nobody will want them.

Resolved this one myself with the help of a previous post. These Apricorn drives are formatted as FAT32. As soon as I formatted it to Mac OS Extended, everything was fine.

  • Iphone Wifi speeds are less than 3G speeds after setting up Airport Extreme

Hello everyone. I've been searching long and hard for an answer with no success. I'm hoping someone here can help me out. A few weeks ago I upgraded my speed on my ISP from 30Mbps down and 4Mbps Up to 50Mbps down and 8Mbps up. I used to have a WRT54G Linskys router which gave me great speeds on my ipads, iphone, Apple TV and both windows based computers. The other day I switched the Linskys out for an new AirPort Extreme. I Set it up and the speeds on all my devices were constant around 35 down and 8 up. I left the default settings on the AirPort Extreme. Then a few days ago I set up the security for my router, WPA2- Personal. Checked the speeds and my computers, ipads are running great but now my iphones are doing constantly for the last 3 days 1Mbps down and 8Mpbs up. So last night I tuned off my security and than the iphone was back to normal speeds. I'm pretty much confused now. Any ideas? Seems like the security setting are doing something here.

  • Internet speed question

My speed tests results show a result of 55000 kbps when connected directly. But when i connect using through a router i get a speed of 15000 kbps. I have 2 connected through LAN and 1 wirelessly.
So even if the other two machines are on, but idle should i expect my speed to be slow? And if so is there anything i can do to achieve maximum speeds on all computers, such at adding a switch/hub?
Any advice, thx in advance. BTW my router is a WRT54G v3.

Speed is not easy to get a hold on, issues /circumstances are constantly changing.
There are many reasons for a poor wireless connection, and many ways to solve this issue.
    1.      Give your network a unique SSID and do not use Linksys and set your SSID Broadcast to enable.
    2.      You can also try A different channel. There are 11 channels and  1, 6 or 11 is better
    3.      You can try raising your router approximately 4-6 feet above the floor and make sure the antennas are vertical.
    4.      access your wireless software by going to your Profile or preferred networks, if any are named Linksys or ones that you do not know please delete them. Go to the settings or properties and check the information to make sure it is correct.
    5.      See if there are any updated drivers to download.
    6.      Try to use WPA encryption if you can
*** As always upgrade to the latest firmware

Anyone know about the problem with Ghost Recon with nforce boards? It send the clock speed through the roof and the game is unplayable as its so fast - you can run the length of the map in Anyone any experience of this problem? The problem is with the nForce chipset, which was not available when GR was being tested. We have notified nVidia about the problem, and a fix should be out shortly.
    Read the Ghost Recon FAQ!
I am not aware of a fix yet and am surprised no one here heard of this problem.
I checked the FAQ but the link is dead so thought ask you guys for advice.
I used Live Driver to d/l latest VGA driver (29.19 I think) but it still goes wappy. After shutting down GR it still runs at break neck speed like my computers on crack!
