Speed on Broadband

At home we have a very very poor connection with BT Broadband as we are too far from the exchange - our internet connection has been off more than it has been on for the last 6 months or so - no amount of calling/emailling has got anyone in BT interested all I get is Sales calls telling about BT infinity. Now I would be very happy to subscribe to this but.....as I have been paying for a connection which has been non existent I certainly do not want to pay a higher price for the same non existent service. What can I do to ensure this will work - I cannot to the speed test as this would rely on the internet connection be up and running and sadly it hasnt been on all week........
Any ideas?!!!?!?!?! ANYONE......

infinity is based on distance from your street cabinet (assuming it has been upgraded) whereas adsl is based on distance from the exchange.  so are you near your cabinet and has it been upgraded ( new cabinet beside old one)
you could try and improve your existing connection and in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) bt speedtester and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Remote XUL no longer available in Firefox to set interface speed to broadband by internet provider

We had some problems with thunderbird lately and had to redo some settings. When resetting my email account on the server to 'Interface speed' from Simple (Dialup) to Advanced(Broadband) it comes up with the message: REMOTE XUL - this page uses an unsupported technology that is no longer available by default in Firefox. I have version 7.0.1

Support for remote XUL was dropped a while back because it was a constant source of security concerns. If you find any website or application still using it you should report it as a bug to its developers.
There is a [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/remote-xul-manager/ Remote XUL Manager extension] which can be used to allow it to trusted sites on an individual basis if you really need it, but the only cases where this should legitimately come up are XUL code examples and some enterprise's internal software systems.

  • Dial up speeds at broadband prices!!!

Why is it that I have to put up with dial up speeds on a braodband package? The last few weeks I have had download speeds of under 1mps, last time this happened after a few weeks of complaining I got up to 6mps and gradually the service has degraded again. The question is if 6mps is possible after some adjustments at your end (BT) why can you not provide this service consistantly? Why is the UK in the dark ages when it comes to broadband? Why is BT spending so much time concentrating on upgrading cities who already have a decent level of broadband and not finnishing the job elsewhere and letting everyone have a good level of broadband? When I am told my exchange will be upgraded in the next few years and I will get Up to 6mps I wonder why BT is ignoring this now and speeding up areas that have more than that now?
Why is my broadband so slow? Why do I have to pay full price for an eighth of the service??????

These are my test results..... Pathetic really.

  • Measuring speed, both Broadband and LAN

    Hi,
Can someone please advise me of a reliable method of measuring the speed i'm getting on my broadband.
    I've tried speedtest.net and thinkbroadband
Speedtest.net showed 94Mb/s with one PC connected to the gigabit port on the homehub when the BT man was here. Now the best I get is about 50, but normally about 25 with the same setup, and other computers on the network drop as low as 12.
For the LAN PCs, are there any recommended tools I can use to try and figure out what's causing the slowdown?
For the actual broadband speed, what should I be using to measure this?
    Thanks

  • Slower and slower speeds on broadband.

For the past 4 weeks I've had what I thought was incredibly slow BB speed, 600Kbps at best through a HH2. After several calls to BT India (the usual try the master socket, reset the modem, we'll clear the line, we'll try our end etc, etc) I got an engineer on 22/08/11.
He tested the line at the socket (we have only one) and he was registering 8Mbps (amazing! I only seem to get 4-6Mbps which I thought was good). He thought it may be the modem and replaced the old one with a BT HH3. He then did a speed test at the computer using BT's speed checker and it showed 1.6Mbps. He said this should settle and improve in 48hrs time.
That evening things had improved, although not to pre problem speeds. The next day, horror of horrors my speed was down to 83Kbps  (yes eighty three) and it has been like this since (using BT's speed checker).
Just got off the phone to BT India and they have said that they will sort it out from their end (they say they can see the problem I'm having) and will call back Monday to see if things have improved.
I thought perhaps it is my set up as I hav emy computer hardwired into the router via a 20m ethernet cable so I got a lappy and hardwired it with a 2m ethernet cable. The result is the same  .
Not really sure what is going on if I'm getting 8meg at the phone socket, it's losing nearly all this speed passing through a filter, a phone lead 1.5m, the router and 2m of ethernet. The whole lot from filter to computer is now all new equipment.
I've even tried disconnecting the phone and Sky box phone lead from the filter with no improvement.
    Am I missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I forgot to ask, can you please post your ADSL stats by following this direct link; http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9116 << it only works if you have a Home Hub 3 and remember to type your password in!
Can you also confirm if you're connected at the master socket or an extension? And what your type your master socket is according to this picture
As standard, the bell wire should be taken out of any master or extension socket as this can reduce the amount of interference your broadband can pick up and sometimes fixes the problem, see how to remove it here http://bit.ly/4LEKJg - have you removed it?
The reason your speed is low is because your IP profile is at rock bottom so it can go and slower luckily for you! Although you need to maintain a stable connection for 3-5 days to allow the profile to catch up.  If its still at 135kbps after that then we can get you in contact with people that can fix it, we need your ADSL stats to make sure you've been connected for enough time.
In response to the engineer I wouldn't know because it could be that the BT Home IT engineer has just been authorised to use the new Home Hub 3 which would sound more like the BT engineer rather than an Openreach, on the other hand it could be an Openreach thats just been authorised to use their new Infinity Modem as the old one overheated?

  • Loss of speed to broadband connection..Any advice?

    Hello
Wondering if i could grab some help /advice.
I have just come back from a short break and have noted that my internet connection has slowed from the normal 3.8mb connection down to around 0.5mb.
now having read a few posts in the forum i have noticed that my noise margin which is usually around 6db/6db down/up, is now reporting 28.3db/6db down/up.
i am assuming that this is the cause of my slower internet connection. When i first logged into my modem eariler today i noticed that the connection time was only 2.5 days., so i am assuming it has reset while i have been away.
I have since tried to reset my modem and it is still reporting the the same speeds.
Is there anything i can do to reset the margin or is it something that need to be carried out by some other BT type genius.
When i have had issues last year i did get some success from the call centres but this took ageeeeeess to resolve.
I have posted below details from my moden. Notice the connectiopn time is due to the reset i carried out.
Iam currently running a home hub 2 which is directly into my test socket. (and has been since i had issues last year)
Thanks in advance for any response.

  • Broadband Speeds

Until recently i have been achieving broadband speeds of between 6.0MB and 7.1MB over the last 12 months
See copy of speed test done on 17th May 2011
We have had work done recently at our exchange Knock Belfast and the broadband checker results have shown I should now be able to get 15MB to 17MB broadband speed
I have been on the phone a couple of times regarding this and have noticed far from increasing speed my broadband speed has substantially reduced. Speed reading today 04/06/2011 3.4MB

The range is an indication of the speed that other similar lines across the UK have achieved for their broadband service; this is generally within 1-2 Mb higher or lower than your single estimated speed quoted.
The actual speed is dependent on several factors such as the product option you choose, the processing power of your computer, how many people are using your broadband connection at the same time, whether you use a wireless or cable connection, the speed of the websites that you visit and how we're managing the network. Speeds can be lower at peak times - peak times are evenings and weekends.

if you get upgraded your modulation will change from current 992.1 to either 992.3 or 992.5

The BT speedchecker says 600-7150 kps is acceptable but I'm not getting anything like that now.  The latest test page said there were no problems! I am reluctant to speak to the Overseas Technical Dept as it took me 5 months to get connected to broadband with much stress and an eventual complaint to Ofcom as there was a problem with the wiring at the exchange, which I kept telling them.  My router is new and working fine. I suspect the wiring may need tweaking again.  I don't want to start taking my PC apart!
All I want is for an engineer to check the wiring at the exchange round the corner but how and who do I get to organise that?
Any help would be gratefully received!

  • Loss of connection/slow broadband speed/crackling ...

Hi Guys, new to this but hope someone can help. Had our broadband with another internet provider for years til last June then noticed low speeds and internet dropping. Changed to our telephone provider for both telephone and internet, lasted a monthe as the problems were worse. Last November changed to BT on neighbours advice, they are on same exchange and same telegraph pole and they get between 11-13 mbs. Same issues with BT, made several calls to technical help but when broadband speed went to 0.02 mbs have had to make a nuisance of myself. Line engineer came out, changed btbox in home, disconnected any spare extensions not in use, checked wiring and gave clean bill of health  and reset broadband speed. Lasted 1 day then connection loss and major drop in speed. Broadband engineer was next, up the pole, down the exchange, wiring changed, bypassed ethernet cable to make sure not home computer, reset but same problems. In constant touch with technical support. At present, plugged into test socket, telephone line crackling, connection dropping every half hour ish, speed 0.242 mbs. Engineer out Monday. Any advice appreciated.

    Hi,
The noise on the line needs to be sorted first before the broadband, as the noise can drastically effect the broadbands performance.
    1) In test socket dial 17070 option 2 from landline.  there should be no noise but slight hum normal on cordless phones.
    2) unplug the broadband from the connected test socket and redo quite line test.  there should be no noise but slight hum normal on cordless phones.
If there is noise it needs to be reported by dialling 151 from landline. DO Not Mention Broadband as it could go to the broadband department and not the phone department. ie not broadband openreach engineer.
After the phone is sorted and the crackling gone, then your broadband should recover. If not then we can help you
    cheers
I'm no expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong

  • Speed capped at 0.5 mbps?

    Hi guys.
I live in a rural area around 4 miles from the nearest exchange. I have been with BT Broadband for several years and have always had a speed of around 0.5 megs and my intenet never looses sync (it may be worth noting i am on bt option 2, up to 16 meg i think). Recently i asked my neighbour (who is connected to the same telephone pole outside our house what speed his broadband was. He is with another isp (not BT) and said he gets a steady 1.5 meg speed and has done for over a year. At first i figured maybe something was wrong with the internal wiring in my house. So after some research i decided to removed the bell wire to all extension sockets and have installed a bt adsl faceplate on the master socket. (Also my router is connected to the master socket). I have also carried out a quiet line test on the line which seems to be perfectly silent.
Here are the stats of my Bt Home Hub 3
These results are identical when i plug the router straight into the test socket.
Obviously i have a rather long line to the exchange (61.7 db att) but i also noticed my Noise margin seems rather high or is that normal? Here is also my speed test result.
Also i have just tried a different router (TP-LINK TD-W8960N) which had no real speed improvement. Here are the statistics it gave me.
I notice this router says i have an attainable sync rate of 1920?
So to sum up, I was wondering is it possible that my speed has been capped at 0.5 megs? And if so can this be reset?
It may be worth noting that about a year ago i had trouble with a dodgy router plug on my home hub 2 which kept turning the router off. Is it possible this is why i was capped?
I am not expecting to get superfast speeds as i am living in a rural area. But it would be nice to atleast get the same speed as my nextdoor neighbour. 0.5 Megs is painfully slow in this modern day world. It seems i am the only person i know who still has to wait 15 minutes to watch a 360p youtube video.
If my speed does not improve i may consider moving to the same isp as my neighbour (although personally i would have liked to stay loyal to bt)
Thankyou for any help you can give me. Gav

Hey guys just thought i'd let you know that the moderators have been in contact with me. Totally surprised at how quick they replied to my request. (Less than a day)
Big thanks to Dean one of the mods. He has uncapped my line and im now receiving a stable 1.75 Sync speed.
Really amazed by how helpful you have all been and what a great job the mods are doing. Hopefully will be getting speeds around 1.5 Meg now which is 3 times faster than what i have been working with for the past several years.
It doesnt seem like much to some of you townies and city peeps. But for a rural area im really pleased with that.
So big thanks to Dean the mod, and to all you guys for your help!

  • New Customer Very Slow BB Speed

    Hi,
Im looking for some help with my broadband speed, the technical help in India don't seem to be very knowledgeable.
When signing to BT I asked what speeds I could hope to achieve, I was told between 5-8 which I was very happy about as iv just moved into a new build house in a small village.
I work from home from my PC so its vital to me to have a good connection to work from. I arranged the whole move around the date they gave me for the engineers visit to install the new physical line. Which was booked over a month in advance, only to be cancelled by text the day before I moved in @ 6pm on a Sat.
A month later I finally have a line installed with a pathetic 0.8 connection, more dial up speed than broadband!
After a lot of phone calls to the tech department im now being told my line should receive 3.5 meg not the 5-8 meg I was told by the sale department.
If I could get 3.5 right now I would be over the moon, never thought I would say that. Iv left the BT hub on now for ten days and my speeds have gone down from 1.2 to 0.8 and im finding it impossible to work with these speeds.
Iv tried to test my speeds with the bt speed tester site but it wont let me, I get an error  (Sorry, we can't run the test for your number at the moment. Please go to the download speed check.) So I have been using speedtest.net
The test are done with a i7 16gb rig, using ethernet cable to the bt hub, the hub is connect to the master socket with the filter supplied by bt. There's no home phone connected and all other wireless devices are disconnected.
Iv asked neighbours and other people in the village what speeds they are receiving and im told between 3-7meg so im hoping something can be done to increase my speed??
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Slow speed since connected

I was with sky and getting 28mbps fibre, I decided to get bt infinity 2 and was told I would get these speeds
    Your broadband speed
We estimate your download speed will be between 46.9Mb and 63.8Mb.
We estimate your upload speed will be between 12Mb and 18.6Mb. It's been in 2 weeks and I'm still only getting 27mbps. I have ran speed tests at speedtester.btwholesale.com and it says ip profile for my line is 27.7mbps I've reported it and now being monitored and they will be phoning me tomorrow, but I had an engineer out for my phone line last Saturday as advised by bt broadband help no phone fault but he told me he has found a fault with the fibre at the cabinet the ports are faulty and to get an engineer out to sort this well I've told bt broadband help this a few times since Saturday and they won't listen to me all they keep doing is making me do the same tests over and over and last night after they said they have rest my line ( still ip profile of 27.7) has refered it to some service team or something who will decide what to do. This is really annoying after all I've been told there is a fault and I'm paying for a service I'm not getting I should of stayed with sky. Sorry for the rant but nobody will listen I'm only telling them what one of bt engineers told me to tell them.

ive tried that it does not upload the images so ill type it out.  availability checker results    fttcA  63.8  46.9 down  18.6  12 down available
fttcB   53  29.5 down    18.6 8.4 up available.      btw performance results  Download speedachieved during the test was - 26.84 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12 Mbps-27.82 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 27.82 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 5.6Mbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

  • Broadband Performance on Different Routers

    Hi all,
The homehub 3 has just decided to resync again after 18days of a very good stable connection, so I thought I would try out the other 2 routers. The routers I tried are BT HomeHub3 Type A, Belkin F5D8631-4 N1 ADSL2+ Modem Router and a BT Voyager 2091.
    1. BT Voyager 2091
This router was one of the ones given to us when we ordered BT Broadband about 6/7 years ago (We were also given a BT Voyager 205) These routers were very good but didn't support the Best wireless for the old stone house.

    A) You will notice the downstream Line Attenuation changes abit. Is this a problem or is it just because the chipsets within the router are different?
    B) Even though the Belkin router gave the best sync rate, it was also the Least stable out of them all. Is there a reason for this?
    C) The best speed the Broadband Openreach Engineer could get on his handheld device was 1.5mb sync rate, so is there a reason the Belkin decided to sync at 1.8mb?
    Cheers

So the System.currentTimeMillis() is in the JSP code, and the OS of the server isn't changing correct? Just the client side?
Since the JSP is run on the server, the System call should be the same for all cases. Likely difference would be if the Mac browser has caching turned off so as to for the JSP to re-compile the request, or something along those lines...
Of course, I am no pro, so I am not sure. But I do know the JVM that is used is on the server side, and is un-touched by the client.

  • My Broadband is so slow

Since the start of the New Year my Internet speed has been so slow, that even though I’ll be fined by BT for ending my contract early, I’m seriously thinking of switching to another provider.
Several times I’ve phoned BT regarding this problem; each time I’ve been asked a serious of questions, each suggesting the problem is with my equipment and not BT’s.  So far I’ve not had much luck increasing my speed.
I’ve just run a test via ‘speedtest.BT.com’ and found the following info:
My max achievable speed was 7150 kbps, however at the time of the test, my download speed was only 183 kbps.  Apparently the acceptable range of speed should have been between 600 – 7150 kbps.
Additional information received from the test was:
My DSL connection rate was 6464 kbps (down-stream) and 448 kbps (up-stream).
The IP profile for my line was 5500 kbps.
I’d be grateful for any suggestions on how I go about improving the speed of my broadband or who in BT I should speak to regarding this problem, as I'm not having much luck with the call centres.

Hi John, thanks for the suggestion. I'll do a couple more tests later today and post the results.
Don't know if it helps or not, the test I ran yesterday was around 9:00pm.  I know the time of day can affect the speed of broadband, however it seems my broadband speed is slow no matter what time of day I'm on, that is except the early hours of course.
Speaking to one of the IT guys at my place of work about my problem, he suggested it sounded like my speed may have been dialed back by BT.  Not sure who I'd need to speak to check this out.
