Speed on wireless

Hi,
I have a macbook pro with band n avaliable on wireless. But the speed is always slow on wireless compared to wired. I am on 100mb internet.
When wired, I did a speed test on speedtest.net and it comes to 90Mpbs, which is what I want, But once I try wireless it never goes over 30Mbps.
Now I know it could be due to a number of things, like change channels on wireless to find the best channel. Is there actually a limit what speed it will get on wireless. The only thing I can do to make faster is to change the band from 2.4ghz to 5ghz, even that sometimes only goes up to 50Mbps, but that also means almost none of my devices in the house can connect via 5ghz.
So im confused, just need some advice on the actual limitations on wireless please, and anything else I can do to improve. Thanks.

The broadband internet speed most ISPs quote is the maximum transfer rate that their connection can achieve under ideal conditions. If their system is heavily loaded, or the site you are connecting to operates at a lower speed, you will not be able to achieve their quoted speed. There is always a choke point somewhere.
Now, with respect to your in-house speed: wired is always fastest. Eithernet can achieve speed up to 1 giga bit per second. No ISP provides that access speed. Wireless over n protocols in the narrow 2.4 GHz band achieving speeds of 30 Mbps are doing well, and 50 Mbps in the double-width 5 GHz band sound good.
I guess bottom-line is, if you are getting speeds as high as 50 Mbps you are actually doing rather well...many ISPs do not offer service at that level.
By all means, see what the activity level is in the frequency band/channel you want to use. If you see a lot of other networks, move half a dozen channels and see what it looks like there. If you can find a clear channel you will get the highest transfer rate your hardware is capable of delivering.
As long as all of your devices have the capability of working in the selected channel you are good to go.

WRTU54G slow speed through wireless.

I recently set up this router above and the speeds through wireless are about 1/3rd of the speed when connected through cable. Signal is strong and set to channel 11. No home phone whatsoever on that frequency. I'm also using the mixed wireless mode. Any ideas before I put it on craigslist? The router is new. Firmware is 1.00.15

Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.0.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
Check the Wireless Connection status, if it gives you 54MB/sec of Speed then it should be fine...

13 download speed at modem and 5-8 speed in wireless network

Can anyone tell me why our iMacs and MacBook Pros that are connected via ethernet have download speeds of about 13, yet our wireless network (new airport extreme+2 expresses) have speeds of anywhere from 5 to 8? This makes our Apple TV work inconsistently!

Anyway to speed up wireless mighty mouse tracking??

i finally made the plunge and added a WMM to my dual G5 2.5MHz. I love the wireless part and will likely add the keyboard later. The biggest problem I'm having is that tracking is slow. Not jumpy like other folks are experiencing, just slow. I've got the older 23" Cinema HD monitor and I prefer a large movement of the pointer to a small input of the mouse. I've got the tracking speed maxed out on the control panel. Any way to make it faster? thanks.

Thank you very much for your help - it is exactly as you describe:
A login / logout is needed for the changes to take effect (and I'm embarrassed I didn't think of that myself!), and then any subsequent changes in the Keyboard/Mouse pref pane overwrite this, so you have to re-edit the plist and logout and back in again.

Gigabit wire speed and wireless speed

I'd like to hardwire the gigabit ethernet ports on my Extreme to my TV and game console. Assuming the TV and game console support gigabit, will speeds on the gigabit wired network be inhibited by connecting older (802.11g) laptops to the 802.11n wireless network? I know that speeds are limited by the slowest device connected to the network, but don't know if that extends to wireless devices as well.

The whole thing is pretty much a moot point if you are connecting your network to the Internet. Even "g" wireless speeds are 54 Mbps. That's probably quite a bit faster than your Internet connection speed with your provider, correct?
The Internet connection is almost always a severe "choke" point on any home network. 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps connections won't matter much if the devices have an Internet connection, as is likely with your TV, Game Console, Computers, etc.

Differing connection speeds dlink wireless router

So my router is set up for G+ speeds and my roomates' Dell inspiron and my macbook pro santa rosa connect at 54mbps while my other roommate connects at 108mbps with his toshiba, what can I do? it's the same for me in windows and mac os, so I know it's not mac os doing it. Is there any way to change the speed I connect at? Atheros wireless was supposed to be top notch but I can't get the speeds yet, I'm about to go out and get a new wireless n router to see if I can connect at N speeds if I can't find a solution for this.
Any help would be great.
p.s. I can't get specific model numbers right now, but all firmware and software is up to date

It's not going to be particularly useful to seek help with a D-Link product here. To be sure, some Mac owners use these routers, but without specific knowledge of that particular model, it would really only be possible to give you broad and general advice on it.
You might, therefore, find a better line of assistance at the D-Link site (http://www.dlink.com/) and from the instructions/user guide for your specific device. If you don't have the instruction/user guide for your device, you should be able to access it there.
That said, having used a D-Link 604 for some time, and not had any issue with setting security, I'd be surprised if your unit were not capable of this. In the security screen when you access the router, there should be a button to save or confirm changes which you need to click once you have set the security type (WPA is more secure than WEP) and the required password.
Likewise, with MAC address filtering, though beware that when setting this, you will need to specify the MAC address of your system (specifically the interface you use to connect it, so if wifi, the MAC of the system's wireless card) at the outset, otherwise once set, you won't be allowed access to change it!
D-Link user guides are not the best written in the world, but are reasonably easy to follow.

Thanks for the info. You can use a utility like www.speedtest.net on her computer to test the Internet connection speed and compare that with the plan that your service provider is furnishing to you.
What download speed do you see here?
Do other sites download slowly as well, or it just this one?
How many walls and/or ceilings are in the signal path between the main wireless router and her computer?
Have you picked up any new cordless phones recently, or moved them around?
It is normal for the wireless speed to be less than a direct wired connection due to some loss in the wired to wireless conversion process and wireless security settings. The connection speed will also fall off with distance and obstructions in the signal path, as well as wireless interference from cordless phones, other wireless networks at the neighbors, and wireless camera/security systems.

Speed and wireless question

If I was to purchase one of these AirPort Extreme Wireless N routers, would I notice a speed difference using wireless G?

That depends on what you'd be comparing the difference to. For example, if your computer client is 802.11g and you've been using an 802.11g Airport Extreme base station, then no, theortically you shouldn't encounter a difference in speed as you wouldn't be taking advantange of the 802.11n protocol. You may also already be capped in network connectivity to the Internet based upon the connection speed provided by your ISP. Other advantages can be had however, and I advise you review the webpage http://www.apple.com/airport for more information.

Wired Speeds v Wireless speeds HELP !

I wonder if anyone technically proficent in these matters would be kind enough share the knowledge with me.
History : I had option 1 = Speeds were 3 up/ 37 down ( very stable)
Upgraded to Option 2
Speeds promised upto 61 down, installed speeds dropped to 27 down max, got onto BT reset all (as I'd done myself many times) and its gone upto 40 down, t always slows back down after a couple of days ???
Also when reset i get 72 down when its a wired connection, and 43 down when wireless connection even if the laptop is right next to router ?
How can a router lose 30 Mb between wired and wireless when laptop is next to router ??
I have also under BT instruction changed from channel 1 to channel 9 ..
My laptop is a relativly new (2010) Dell model and i assume it has all compatable network adaptors ?

Most sub standard routers transmit at maximum 54meg if they are not an N-draft router, which gives increased speeds and range. The only problem with wireless is that it's too unreliable and subject to interference from phones and other electrical equipment, Which in effect would slow down your connection speeds wirelessly.

Q150 download speed via wireless

I really like this form factor of Lenovo Q150 and also its HD playback. BUT Youtube playback is really choppy on this machine. I used Internet Speed Test on the web and found it was 500kbps on this machine with 802.11n, while my other older notebook on the same network has 1.1Mbps with its old 802.11g.
I sort of expect much higher speed from Q150 because my router supports 802.11n. any tip to speed it up?

Upload speed to me is normal, it is same as my wired desktop's upload speed (around 300kbps) My ADSL plan is just a basic one. the signal seems to be fine.
Is that possible WEP encryption affect this box more than my other notebook via wireless or TrendNet ADSL rounter doesn't like Q150. I have mix of 4 PC plus 2 Mac in the same area. download speed issue is only slow on Q150.
When I compared the speed, all computers logged on to the same internet speed test site (http://www.speedtest.net/). I will say it is fair comparison.

I have a main router/firewall with two wireless routers(linksys E2500 and TP link) connected to it.I want to configure them to all be on the same LAN (192.168.19.0) so i experimented with the TP link first by removing the ethernet cable from the WAN port and inserting it in the LAN port then I disabled DHCP and it worked perfectly. The only downside is that i am getting slower speeds on the TP link compared to the linksys which is still on the 192.168.1.0 network.Ethernet also works fine though i've observed that the TPlink name displays on the ethernet NIC. Can the speed be increased one way or the other or i have to change my setup?

Using Airport Express to bring up the speed of wireless to n with a/b/g devices

I have an old computer my wife will not give up for whatever reason. It's slowing the entire household network down with it's a/b/g card. I turned off her wifi and used a cat 5e cable to connect to the Airport Express set to extend a signal. I've found my wireless works MUCH faster. I hope this helps you!

Could you explain 'cause I'm trying very hard to
understand Networks.
An Airport Express can be configured to extend a wireless network wirelessly using WDS (wireless distribution system) which effectively receives the signal from a main base station and broadcasts it again.
You can only use an Airport Express in this way with a main base station which supports Apple's implementation of WDS.
You can do this with
- another Airport Express
- an Airport Extreme Base Station
- a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
- a Belkin Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
- one specific model from SMC (can't find model number right now)
- one specific model from Buffalo
For wireless routers not on this short list - not possible.
In particular, it will not work with any WiFi routers from D-Link or Netgear.
Also, can you suggest an
alternative?
You have two options.
Purchase an Apple main base station (and sell the D-Link)
Connect the Airport Express to the D-Link by cable and extend the network in that way (known as a roaming network).

Poor transfer speeds? wireless network - wrt54g2 v1

Hi all
My Isp uses an ADSL router/modem and since I use P2P Software I configured my router as a switch following instrustions here I disabled DHCP and connected my ADSL to a LAN port on the router. The internet connection works fine.
My network is made up of two computers a laptop and a desktop machine. I have some shares on the desktop that I access from the laptop. I just have one concern: it takes fairly long in my opinion to transfer files a 700MB file can take up to 12 mins to transfer is that a reasonable time?
No interference on network, computers are abou 6 feet from each other separated by a wall with a space to the top.
Just wanted to determine that the wireless is working properly. Windows task manager shows wireless utilization during these transfers as just 25%.

When you use your WRT54G2 in this manner, you are actually using it as a WAP (wireless access point), not just as a switch. In this mode, the WRT54G2 should be given a "Local IP address" that will be recognized by your ADSL router/modem as a fixed LAN IP address.
From your note, it is not clear, but it sounds like your laptop and desktop are both connected wirelessly to your WRT54G2. Although your WRT54G2 will connect at 54 Mbits/sec, the actual data throughput is about 20 to 25 Mbits/sec = 2.0 to 2.5 Megabytes/sec. If both your computers are wireless, they will need to split this bandwidth, making the maximum possible transfer rate about 1.0 to 1.25 Megabytes/sec. So the fastest possible time to transfer 700 Megabytes from one wireless computer to another wireless computer (on wireless g) would be about 560 to 700 seconds = 9+ to 11+ minutes. So your 12 minute transfer time sounds reasonable.

Poor internet speed over wireless

We just signed up for a new ADSL2+ plan, and received a wireless router along with it (an Open Networks iConnect Access 624W), which came pre-configured for our ISP (Internode).
My housemate (who has a 17" iMac G5), had no problems finding the router and is getting around 1.5MB down a second. I, on the other hand am getting anywhere from 130kB a second, down to 0. It's slow, and very very patchy. And it's getting worse. (this morning, I struggled to download a 700kb file).
I tried to re-setup the airport settings multiple times to no avail. I've checked to see I've run all software updates (I have).
It's weird, it's not like it isn't connecting. I can at least bring up something, albiet very slowly, and I can see the other iMac via bonjour. I just can't get the same internet performance.
The router is placed pretty much dead centre between the two iMacs too (just in the hall between the rooms). Can't be more than 3m away from the computer.
Is there anything I can do to narrow down the issue?
Could there be something wrong with my Airport Extreme card?

It certainly is possible that there is a hardware problem, but it is more likely that it is in the settings somewhere. Have you checked to see that the settings in the two Macs match? I would make sure that Airport is listed first in the connections and also be sure to have IPv6 turned off. Those are two things that I have found can make a difference in the performance.

WRT300N, dropping connection speeds, losing wireless all together

I have a WRT300N with updated firmware (v.1.03.3) and have tried the magic beacon interval and RTS/Frag. Threshold tricks and I am still randomly losing wireless all together. Any suggestions please????

Try changing the channels... Set the radioband to standard instead of wide... and set the standard channel to 11...
