Speed pegged at 2MB?

We have a new connection (10 days old) with an estimated download speed of 6-8Mb but the most we ever get is 2Mb. The nice lady in Calcutta checked the line and said everything was fine, so what gives?
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the quick replies; here is the test result. Mark

  • Broadband speed pegged to 2Mb/s

Since transferring to BT broadband last week from Be my internet speed has dropped from 8-10Mb/s to 1.94Mb/s.
Several attempts with the chat line and telephone support have failed to achieve any improvement.
The BT speed check shows exchange to router speed of 8.13Mb/s wifi speed 1.94 Mb/s IP Profile of line 2Mb/s
Why am I being limited when I was promised no fall off in service?

Sorry to hear you're having problems with you BT Retail Services.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
    1) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtester.bt.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
    2) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. Should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
    3) please post adsl line statistics

  • Broadband speed stuck at 2mb/s

    Hi,
Hoping I can get this problem sorted, have tried customer services and got no where! Slightly frustrated by the problem now.
    Test results from speedtester.bt.com
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1.84 Mbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps. Additional Information: Your DSL Connection Rate :8.13 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM) IP Profile for your line is - 2 Mbps
my router connects at 8mb but only get around 2mb when downloading
seems obvious to me my ip profile is stuck on 2mb (and has been for months)
Router is plugged straight into main(only) phone socket via adsl filter.
have tried different  phone cables, asdl filter, router, network cables & computer, same results (changed over a month ago).
Customer services told me my ip profile was not 2mb but 7mb and never did anything other than try to tell me it was my equipment at fault.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Speed stuck at 2Mb

I have had an ongoing issue with poor speeds since moving house in November. I have called the tech helpline several times and have jumped through evey hoop under the sun!! Getting very hacked off now to say the least.
I am getting a constant speed of 1.83 mbs down and 0.36 mbs up. After having a look about on the forums it would seem that my IP profile could be stuck at 2.
Any suggestions on what to do to get this fixed? I am sick of calling and getting fobbed off by someone on the other side of the world who tells me that they have tested the line and I should be getting 8mbs.
I'm on the brink of calling the complaints department to tell them I am moving provider.

  • Download and upload speed issues

Hi I am new to the forum and I am having problems with my broadband speed I get approx 6.8mb download speed but what appears to be happening is when I surf the net the speed is 6.8mb but the problem is when I download the speed drops to max 2mb can be as low as 0.6mb does anyone know why this would be happening, I have read on the forum that you should keep your home hub on 24/7 must admit haven't been doing this usually turn it off when no one is in the house. The other issue is my upload speed is poor only get approx 0.3mb when I was with O2 before I changed to bt in the summer I was getting 1mb upload any ideas how to improve this

hi thanks for getting back in touch we have the old type of phone socket does not have a test socket
speed test result: download speed 7.10mb upload 0.33mb ping latency 39.00 ms
these are the speeds when i surf the issue is when i download the speed plummets to 2mb. and why is upload only 0.33mb when o2 on same line was 1mb

  • Ofcom wants to ban misleading broadband speed ads

Ofcom is seeking to stop internet service providers from advertising unrealistic broadband speeds.
Currently most ISPs advertise services as 'up to' a certain speed - for instance, 20Mbps (megabits per second).
But Ofcom's latest research finds that very few consumers actually get these headline speeds.
Ofcom's latest research into broadband speeds found that just 14% of customers on 'up to' 20Mbps services received speeds of over 12Mbps, while 58% averaged speeds of 6Mbps or less.
Cable and fibre services fared better, with 92% of V***** M**** customers on an 'up to' 50Mbps service averaging 45.6Mbps.
BT's Fibre-to-the-Cabinet technology, which is currently available to 15% of UK homes, has an average of 31.8Mbps on the 40Mbps service.
BT is not impressed with Ofcom's idea.
"We have real concerns with their approach. Broadband speeds vary from line to line and so it is meaningless to use one speed for advertising. That is why we use the term 'up to'," said John Petter, managing director of BT Retail.
He said he thought such a policy "would encourage digital exclusion rather than tackle it".
"Enforcing typical speed ranges is also dangerous as it could encourage more ISPs to cherry pick customers who will increase their average, leaving customers in rural and suburban areas under-served," he said.

I feel 'Up to' is acceptable, 'Maximum product speed' (with the usual caveats about line length, quality, etc) would be better when advertised alongside a minimum product speed guarantee, say 2Mb/s.
Far more pernicious are 'Unlimited' claims (which Ofcom/ASA are also investigating) - any service which is advertised as 'Unlimited' and has ARTIFICIAL constraints placed upon it is not unlimited!
Blaming users for actually using the product they have purchased and restricting 'heavy' users is disingenuous!  IF a package is described as unlimited then the available bandwidth should be shared equally between those users contending it rather than the more common 'you've exceeded your permitted bandwidth of this unlimited product... we're restricting you to speed X during peak times.'
Such restrictions are not for the benefit of the other customers... if memory serves, residential bandwidth is contended 50:1 (or thereabouts)... if the ISP has insufficient bandwidth to accomodate a serviceable connection to each of those users simultaneously that is the ISP's problem but which would they prefer to, potentially, lose?  A few 'heavy' users or fifty customers for having the audacity to expect some minimum level of service?

  • MacBook Air 2010 network speed drop sharply after download starts

My MBA 2010 started having network issue a few month ago. The symptom is:
    1. Sometime, the network speed (both in and out) drops to 0B/sec suddenly and all connection died, then comes back after a few sec.
    2. When downloading large files, the initial download speed was great, 2MB/s, but sharply dropped to 20KB/s after a few sec. And never increase.
I have another MacBook Pro on the same home network. Never had such issues with it. I also tried to download the same file from both machines at the same time or one after another. No matter which way, my MBP can consistently have 2MB/s speed, but my MBA only had 20K/s.
I had this issue with MBA when it was running snow leopard. And I thought it may deal with OS. So just upgraded to Mountain Lion (clean install). But still the same issue.
But when speedtesting with www.speedtest.net, MBA still works pretty good, 18mbps download, 4mbps upload. This really confuses me. I begin to suspect if my airport adapter is broken or getting flaky. Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Ok, when I take the MacBook Air into the room with the Airport Express the Internet Connection works well and the Airport Utility shows the Phy Connection as 802.11 a / n as opposed to 802.11 b / g / n
Does this tell me anything about why when connected to the Network via the Airport Express that I am having trouble connecting to almost any URL?  Sometimes it connects but very slowly.  When I do get through to the Speedtest things look Ok but with some serious valleys in the graphic.

  • Speed drops using Airport extreme on ADSL2+ Connection

Hi, I figure when I connect through my AEBS (2m distance to G5) I loose a lot of speed compared to the full speed of 18M down and 1M up when I connect my G5 direct with Ethernet Cable to my modem. The Internet provider Company told me that I have to uncheck the "send Echo" option in the PPPoE settings and that works fine without the AEBS.
I just don´t find the option to uncheck this in the Airport Admin Program.
Any Ideas? Thanks a lot for your help in advance!
    Robert
    POwermac G5 Dual 2,7-4GB ATIX800XT & Powerbook G4 TI   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 x 23" Cinema Display, Airport Express

Hi Macfink. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I tried with your settings but no recognizable speed enhancements showed. Stll using the AEBS I get about 150KB/sec down speed compared to 2MB/sec connecting directly to my modem via Ethernet cable. As it seems the problem is within the PPPoE settings. When I check or uncheck the option "send PPP echo packets" (translated from my german OS) the speed changes dramatically. And this is excactly what my network provider told me to do. The only problem is that in the AEBS configuration I cannot find any option like this. I went through many forums already, maybe I´ll spend the 50$ for a call to Apple one day, possibly to hear that there is no solution to this issue.
    Thanks, Robert

  • Very different wifi speeds

    Here's my setup:
ADSL modem/router, wifi turned off, feeding Extreme via ethernet.
Express in the front of house, connected bridge mode to Extreme.
The ADSL modem/router is distributing addresses starting 192.168.xxx to both devices
Place laptop near the Extreme and copy large file from MacPro, I get nice constant speeds of 1.2Mbs
Place laptop near Express, I get speeds varying from 12kbps to 200kbps. But mostly very slow speeds and sometimes nothing at all.
Both Airports come up in the Utility as running in 'n' mode.
Laptop is 2010, so that runs in 'n' mode.
I have a feeling this all started when I had to reconfigure both Airports for some reason.
To reconfigure I followed the latest Apple guidelines, at least to the best of my ability.....
I do recall that before this reconfigure, the Extreme was distributing addresses starting 10.xxx (which is correct) and I don't remember the speeds being so sluggish.
What can be the problem here?

Hmmm. On one hand you say:
The ADSL modem/router is distributing addresses starting 192.168.xxx to both devices
Which would mean that the modem/router is handling DHCP for the network....and....the AirPorts should both be in Bridge Mode for that reason.
But, on the other hand you say:
the Extreme was distributing addresses starting 10.xxx (which is correct)
The Extreme cannot distribute IP addresses if you have it correctly configured in Bridge Mode because DHCP is turned off in this setting.
Please open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Your settings should look like this:
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save any changes and let the AirPort Extreme restart
Then power off everything on the network....modem/router, AirPorts, Macs, printers, etc....order is not important
Wait a moment, then start your modem/rotuer first and allow it to run 2-3 minutes by itself
Then start the AirPort Extreme the exactly the same way
Then start the AirPort Express exactly the same way
Start each other device one at a time about a minute apart

  • Slow Speed Tests through Airport Extreme (7.4.2)

I was experiencing some slow Internet speeds that I was troubleshooting with Comcast and worked with them to fix getting me back to 18Mb/s download speeds (with the computer plugged directly into the Comcast modem). Once that was fixed, I noticed that things were much slower after I put the Airport Extreme back in the mix. To troubleshoot further I plugged an ethernet cable directly from the computer into the Airport Extreme (eliminate wireless) and did not observe any speed gain (1-2Mb/s). If I take the very cable coming into the Airport's WAN port and plug it into my computer, my download speed tests skyrocket back to 18Mb/s. Odd huh?
After poking around on these forums, I tried setting the config back to default factory settings and re-applying the saved config. Same result.
I reapplied the latest 7.4.2 firmware and even tried it with "out-of-the-box" factory default settings. Same result.
I've tried brand new Belkin Cat5e ethernet cables. Same result.
Any idea as to what may be causing this??
I can reproduce this problem on 3 different laptops (Snow Leopard, WinXP, and Win7). Transfer speeds between these laptops appears to be limited to 2Mb/s when plugged into the airport vs significantly faster when plugged into another Belkin switch I have laying around.

I'm not able to provide a solution though I too find that the AE is not as fast as it is supposed to be. At one time I had a Belkin Wireless and an ADSL connection that topped out at 1.5MB/sec. Now I have a 50MB/sec internet connection and honestly, I have seen an increase in my speed over wireless but the Belkin really seemed quite zippy! I play World of Warcraft and I remember someone saying to me that AE or our Macs have Firewalls set-up that we don't know about or "something" that limits the speeds of the connections - which PCs and non-Apple products do not. Constantly see when downloading new patches from WOW, messages that I am behind a firewall - when I do not have firewall set on the AE nor on my Mac...

  • Connection speeds dropped and noisy line

    Hi there,
We will be calling BT tomorrow about this as we have had some crackling noise on our phone line over the past few days and the noise margin has shot up and the speed dropped, broadband connections keeps dropping randomly and sometimes the speed drops to 2mb instead of the usual 18-19mb I get.
When I plug the phone directly into the socket I hear no noise on the line at all, when I plug the phone into the ADSL adapter I still hear no noise, when I plug the router into the ADSL adapter I start to hear noise when the router starts to connect up.
Dont have a replacement adapter tonight to test this theory so thought I would throw it out there for experienced users to comment on.
    Thoughts?
As I said before my noise margin has went up quite a bit since this issue.

The noise margin will normally fluctuate but only very small amounts. You should find that noise margin is higher about lunchtime and as it get dark and more use the phoenline then noise margin starts to reduce and get lowest about 11/12pm and then the cycle starts again

  • External harddisk became extremely slow after reformat using disk utility

hello everyone~ let me try to describe as clear as possible!
to start with, i have 2 external harddisk:
    hd(A)-120G, format in Mac OS Extended (journaled), it's and old harddisk and is nearly full;
hd(B)-200G, format in MS-DOS (ie. FAT32), it's a new harddisk with plenty of space.
what i wanted to do: make both hd(A) & hd(B) read & writable in mac & windows.
so, i tried to move all files in hd(A) to hd(B), hope to reformat the hd(A) to MS-DOS. but then i found out many big files can't be moved to hd(B) at all, and then i found out there's a 4G limit to the FAT32 format.
then, i tried to format hd(B) in NTFS, hoping that it can be read & writable with the help of MacFuse in both mac & windows without file size limit. so i downloaded and installed the MacFuse in my mac and format the hd(B) in a PC with Vista. well i was a bit impatient.. so i chose quick format only. then i plugged it in my mac~ yes it's readable & writable!! but the speed was like... 2mbps.......yes, 2MB per second. i really can't stand this speed! i thought it's becoz of the NTFS format... maybe it makes the transfer speed slow in mac?
so finally... i reformat the hd(B) into Mac OS Extended (journaled) using Disk Utility in OSX. i gave up the idea to make it usable in both mac & window.. i juz want the bigger harddisk to serve as a backup storage harddisk and i'll be happy with that already. so, after the format, i started moving files from hd(A) to hd(B)...and....well... the speed remained at 2MB per second.... which means, it takes like an hour to transfer juz 2G or so... i think the speed is very strange right?? maybe i messed it up making it different formats one time and another... and i dunno what to do with it now!!
    anyone...please help me?? =(

Hi aniDa, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You might try reformatting it but choose the Security Option button to Zero Data once.
    Did you reboot everything?

  • Mail sending is sooo slow

    Hi all
Sending emails seem to be so slow today. I am not sure whats going on. I have tried sending an email with word (test) on it to myself. At the moment it is still trying to send the email the outgoing mail message mail activity bar is going from 33.3kb/s to at least 49kb/s it keeps going up and down the speed. I tried sending 2 word attachments they seem to be taking forever, that i decided to cancel sending them. My internet up load speed is currently: 0.21MB/s download speed is about 2MB. General surfing on the internet is fine. I got an email on my iphone on my mobileme account that does not seem to have been updated on my Mail account on my mac. I really do not know whats going on. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

It's likely not Mail itself but rather the upstream connection to your ISP.
I had a similar problem and have cable internet, and my cable provider found a bad cable in my neighborhood such that the download frequencies were fine but the upload frequencies were so interference prone that upload rates were in the dialup range.
If you're still experiencing the issue, try running the network tests at speedtest.net and check if your upload rate is abnormally low.

  • Which base station do I need please ?

    Hi there
I have an ibook G3, so I assume I have to use an 'Airport' card in it.
If that's the case, what is the best option for a base station to give me the fastest possible speeds on my 2MB Broadband connection in UK.
I will be linking my base station to an ADSL router using ethernet.
Any help would be much appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

Your iBook G3 requires an original Airport card - which is no longer sold by Apple and its dealers. This card is becoming increasing difficult (and expensive) to buy - try EBay.
You can use ANY wireless router to connect your Airport equipped iBook to an ethernet interface DSL modem. I don't recommend you buy one of the old Graphite or Snow Base Stations (topic of this discussion forum). If you want to buy an Apple product, get the Airport Express. If you don't mind buying a non-Apple product, any wireless router sold at your local computer shop will do just fine.
One additional consideration - since you live in the UK, you need to use a so-called "DSL gateway" if you use an Apple Airport Express or Base Station. Most DSL systems in the UK use the PPPoA protocol to establish a connection - which Apple's products can't handle, thus the need for an external "DSL gateway" that does handle this protocol.
