Speed problems with dual band AEBS

I got the new dual band AEBS to replace a belkin b/g router I had and so far it has been a headache. When it started it had 7.4.0 I think and it had speed issues. Certain web sites would take forever to load, even on my imac that was hardwired to the router. My wife's MacBook 1.8 ghz Core Duo (802.11g) had a strong signal but the speed on the web was also really slow, almost like dial up speeds.
I upgraded to 7.4.1 and the speed on the locally attached computer got way better, but my wife's laptop still is acting really slow over wireless.
I wanted to hook up my 2 TB raid to the thing as a AirDisk, but so far I don't trust the router enough to do it. Its a bit dissapointing as I am a real Apple fan in general.
Questions -
1) should I go to 7.3.2? Is this even possible with a dual band device?
2) is it possible that her laptop is trying to get on the wrong network and going slow for that reason?

I'm having the very same problem. Although I've upgraded to the new dual-band ABS (from ABSE), I was getting slower speeds on wireless after the 7.4.1 upgrade. In fact some of the speeds occasionally approach near dial-up while the Mac wired to the ABS is getting near DSL speeds. Very annoying.

  • Reduced transmit rate on new dual band AEBS vs older AEBS 802.11N, gigabit

    Hi,
I recently upgrade my AEBS from the older 802.11N Gigabit version to the dual band version. The new 2.4ghz part works fine for my iphone, however the 5ghz signal has much slower throughput. previously I could routinely get 270Mbps, now I am lucky to get 160Mbps. the new 5ghz signal is on the same frequency (48), the same multicast rate, and has wide channels selected. When I plugged the older model back in and tested it the throughput was the same 270Mbps so it is not some new interference.
Anybody else see anything like this? Do the two radios on the AEBS interfere with each other somewhat?
any ideas? Did I just get a dud unit or is this common (fixable?)?
    Thanks

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply. My situation is a bit different as I have various wifi units from different locations (some US, some European, some Japanese, etc, etc). As such I need to pick a frequency that works for everything, and on my previous non dual band AEBS channel 48 worked fine. I have tried channel 161 just for curriosity and it made no difference. The transmit rate is listed at between 216Mbps and 27Mpbs but as soon as you attempt to transfer anything it drops significantly. I have also tried to time the difference between my new dual band AEBS and the older one and, regardless of what the connection speed is saying, the new one is definitely slower.
It isn't unusable by any means, I just thought it was odd and I have never seen it mentioned on any of the reviews of the new dual band units.

  • Having both 802.11g and 802.11n devices on a new dual-band AEBS

Although I don't own a dual-band AEBS yet, I'm thinking I might be in the market for one. I just moved into a new apartment complex where the 2.4GHz frequency is saturated with over 30 wireless networks in range of my unit. I'm thinking that the 5GHz frequency would be much less crowded, and am thus considering getting a dual-band AEBS.
I have the following equipment on my home network:
1 Power Mac G5 (uses wired ethernet)
    2 MacBooks (use 802.11n)
    1 iPhone (uses 802.11g)
    1 PlayStation 3 (uses 802.11g)
My question is (and I keep finding conflicting information on this topic) will the iPhone and the PS3 slow down the MacBooks from 802.11n speed to 802.11g speed when they are connected to the dual-band AEBS? If so, can this be avoided by running 2 routers with two separate SSIDs (one in 802.11n only mode, and the other in 802.11g only mode)?
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but the fine print on Apple's product page says that the dual-band AEBS will be slowed down when a 802.11g device joins, but I have heard people say otherwise elsewhere.
    Thanks.

So with the new dual-band AEBS, it is possible to create two different SSIDs (one 5GHz 802.11n and one 2.4GHz 802.11g) and have those two networks seamlessly joined for file/printer sharing as well as both run at their maximum speeds.
To the best of my knowledge, being that I just got one a few days ago and haven't "experimented" fully yet, I believe the answer is yes to all counts. I'm sure if others have had the opportunity to check out all of the features that this new model has to offer, they will certainly chime in.

  • Subnet range for new Dual Band AEBS

One thing that's prevented me from using an AEBS as my router is that Apple crippled it's capability by only allowing a class C subnet and I need to use numbers from across the whole Class A address range. Does the new Dual Band AEBS go any firther and allow you to specify your own subnet mask or is it still just as crippled as it ever was?

The annoying thing is that there's simply no reason for it. Just allow the user to enter some different numbers for the subnet mask and that's it. I can only think they're concerned about someone trying to use an Airport as a router for a well populated Class A or B subnet which would overwhelm it, but to be honest, that's not Apple's lookout. Other small router manufacturers let the user make their own decisions in this regard and it's not the manufacturer's responsibility if the user tries to do something inappropriate.
This is THE big issue for many potential users when it comes to using an AirPort BaseStation as a router (or not, because of this problem). It's about time Apple woke up and fixed this nonsense.

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers
    Take Care,

  • Adding new dual band AEBS-initial setup question--join network or setup new

Upon the initial setup of a new dual band AEBS, do I join my current network or setup a new network?
I bought this just so I can set up a separate 5GHz band to force my newer computers to a faster network. I know that the 5GHz band needs it's own new network name. I am just wondering how to do it at the very beginning after I plug it in. I want the 2.4GHz band to connect on the network I already have, and the 5GHz band to be a new name.
    Thanks!

Looks like Bob has already given you the correct steps. In addition to his comments, I would like to offer the following suggestions:
o Before trying to configure either base station to extend your new DB AEBSn, I would strongly suggest that you perform a "hard" reset on the AEBSn & a "factory default" reset on the AXn.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. To make it even simpler and avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the setup, attach each to the DB AEBSn via Ethernet.
o Remember each base station will only be able to extend one of the DB AEBSn's radios so try to select the appropriate base station for the job.
o I would recommend the following radio mode combination for your DB AEBS: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g/n. This will prevent any 'stray' 802.11a wireless clients from connecting to the 5 GHz network and affecting its overall bandwidth performance.

  • Player compatibility problem with dual layer media

I've created a dual layer DVD and there is a problem with compatibility from player to player.
It plays fine in one of my DVD players but will not load in the other.
The duplicators tested my master on 2 players and it loaded on both, but would lock up if a chapter was selected from the submenu.
It has 4 tracks of content. 3 menus, and a bunch of chapter markers. The original build had stories (replaced with standard chapter markers) but I removed them hoping it would solve the problem.
The imported video tracks were created with Compressor. MPEG-2 2 pass VBR max bit rate 7.5. AC3 audio tracks. 7.7 GB on disc.
I'm already way over my deadline and ahve no idea what to do next other than maybe recompress so the disc is not so close to being maxed out.

Thats just how compatible that media is... +R DL (double layer) & -R DL are not that compatible. Recordable media is less compatible that replicated discs but double and dual layer media can be 50% compatible at best (depending on your target market...)
Good quality media, Verbatim +R DL for example burnt at slow speeds helps improve things,

  • Macbook Wireless Driver Incompatible with Dual Band Access Points & PPTP VPN with MPPE Enabled.

    Configuration:
    Local Client: Macbook Pro 8,1 (Dual boot 10.8.2 & Windows 7 x64)
Local WLAN AP: WiFi dual band access points (I do not have admin access to)
    ISP: TWC Road Runner
External VPN Server: Poptop PPTPD server v1.3.4 (I do have admin access to)
    Problem:
There is a Macbook BCM4331 driver incompatibility that spans across both OS X and Windows 7 when connecting to a PPTP VPN through a local dual band access point.
The same Macbook (booted into either OS X 10.8 or Windows 7) cannot maintain a ping/connection to the PPTP server when connected to a local dual band (2.4GHZ/5GHZ) WiFi access point.
Macbook connects and remains connected to the PPTP server (as shown in connection status,) but no traffic will pass through VPN once the connection has "dropped" internet traffic. Flood ping to the VPN server initially replies with expected <30ms ping time. Once internet traffic is passed across VPN, ping fails and traffic stops completely.
    • Any other wifi client machines & OS using same dual band AP can connect to VPN and maintain flood ping to PPTP server and pass all traffic or even split tunnel. I've tested different computers using Windows XP, Windows 7, Android 4.1, iOS 6.0.1 etc. No problems at all.
    • Macbook can maintain flood ping and pass traffic to PPTP server when connected to a different standard 2.4GHZ access point.
    • Macbook can maintain flood ping and pass traffic to PPTP server when connected via Ethernet on same LAN as dual band AP's.
    • Macbook can maintain connection/ping by disabiling MPPE encryption on the PPTP server. Running an unencrypted VPN is not an option for me however.
    • Macbook can maintain connection/ping whenn booted into Windows 7 natively and disabling 2.4 band through Device Manager > Advanced tab > Disable bands > "Disable 802.11g/b".
To fix this problem, I would propose that Apple allow OS X users to disable 2.4GHZ in OS X. Doing so should allow PPTP + MPPE when connected via dual band routers as it does in Windows 7. I think asking them to rewrite the driver for OS X & Windows 7 is asking too much.

I haven't heard anything back yet. I will update if I do.
Being that Apple takes pride in selling their own computers and writing their own drivers & software to match, the Macbook with OS X 10.8 should be a super polished, finely tuned machine. It's aggravating when I can't do relatively simple things which I can do on any other device & OS:
If you've read the first post, you know it's not possible to pass PPTP + MPPE on the Macbook Pro 8,1 with OS X 10.6+ or Windows 7 when connected to a dual band AP.
OS X also imposes a 130mbps limit on the 2.4Ghz band. I have no problems connecting @ 450mbps on 2.4Ghz with Windows 7. The range is much better than 5Ghz as expected when there aren't any neighboring AP's for interference. I've also never received interference with Bluetooth devices.
There have been a couple times where some things don't plain work right and the flexibility to fix them as an "Apple knows better than the user" policy is restricted. In most cases, perhaps Apple does know better. In this case, there is definitely a problem with the BCM4331 driver. If it "just worked" this topic wouldn't have been created.

  • IPad Air: stumped by streaming problem on dual band router

I have a dual band router at home. My iPad Air will stream very poorly when connected to the 5 GHz band. By streaming, I mean Netflix, Crackle, etc. Everything works fine if I connect to the 2.4 GHz band. The strange part is that my old iPad One streams fine from either band. Even stranger, downloading stuff like apps or magazines works fine with the iPad Air on either band. The problem is only with the iPad Air when streaming on the 5Ghz band. Any one else has this problem?

I am also finding streaming (from YouTube) to be poor both on wifi and 3G. My first gen iPad had a lot of problems, but streaming was never one of them. Signal strength is good and I haven't changed any network hardware or settings.

  • Xbox 360 and new Dual Band AEBS

Has anyone successfully connected their xbox 360 wirelessly to the new dual band Aiport Extreme. I can get a connection but the xbox will not receive an IP. I've tried every possible combination of wireless signals, channels, and no encryption still nothing...

For some reason it causes the xbox to not obtain an IP if I have the Express as Participating only extend seems to work with the new AEBS. Also I have a mac pro with wireless built in and it would not connect the the N/A antenna it would only connect to the b/g. Once I enabled Extend the Pro connects to the N/A.
There must be a bug with the new AEBS and the Express.

  • Problem with dual screen (24" imac 2006 ver)

    hi
    i've got a 24" intel imac (2006 ver) and i've connected it using apple's mini-dvi => vga adapter to my 2nd 22" lcd monitor, a samsung 2232GW, which is set to 1680 x 1050.
however, the samsung lcd displays (when i'm using as dual screen) is quite blur and double imaged. quality is readable but very irritating. i'm also using the same monitor for my ps3 (uses the DVI side) and have no problem with any visual aspect. I've tried playing around with the settings like resolution and calibration and tuning but didn't help at all.
anyone might have any ideas and enlighten me on this issue?

Did you get any resolution to your question? I have the Samsung monitor almost like yours, and I posted two seconds ago. I think I have a similar problem. I had been using my Samsung with my PC, and just switched to Mac. I loved my Samsung, but now ,for the first time using as a second. Hooked up to mini dvi to dvi, and reported a glow, or tinge coming around any window that I may place on the Samsung. Also, when Ilook at the background around the window I can see that the resolution is not perfect and is breaking up a little. Did you try VGA? and did it help? Curious to know

  • Mouse Scroll speed problems with JVM

I could not find Java (Apple’s JVM ) forums, so I might be posting this in the wrong forum. With that disclaimer, here is my issue:
I am running into a problem where the mouse-wheel scrolling speed configurations are not being properly passed to Java applications. I have set my scrolling speed to the maximum, all works well with regula apps, yet when I use my mouse-wheel to scroll and window in a Java application, scrolling it is unbearably slow, the wheel becomes useless.
Also, horizontal scrolling does not work in any java application either.
I believe these are a problem with Apple's JVM implementation. Are there any workarounds?
    Has anyone else experience this?
    JVM v1.5

Does this happen with all Java apps or just a handful? I ask because I found that OpenOffice scrolls so slowly that it's unusable. However, I think this is an issue with OO, not with Java. Other Java apps scroll fine for me.

    Hi ashwani26596,
Let's start by using the HP Support Assistant to check for any updates and drivers to see if that resolves the issue. If that doesn't work then go your Control Panel and then Programs and Features and uninstall the Catalyst Control Center. Then try installing both the Intel High-Definition Audio Driver and the AMD High-Definition Audio Driver.
