Speed up backup exec tape backups?

I've tried researching this but my Google-fu is failing me.
Looking for a recommendation on web monitoring software for our workstations (approx. 50 users).
I currently have "TotalSpy" which I'm testing on a few user's workstations, but it's not the greatest solution since a lot of anti-malware and antivirus applications tend to flag it (for obvious reasons), and sometimes it just stops working and needs to be reinstalled. Also it sends its reports in an odd format that need to be renamed to be viewed.
We also have a SonicWall NSA 220 router, which I know has some capabilities to perform web monitoring, but I'm concerned about the complexity of configuring it, and basically... doing anything on the SonicWall is an exercise in frustration... I would pick *any* solution over that just because of it's unnecessary complexity. :(

Trying to Recover Data From Old Backup Exec Tapes

I have been tasked with recovering data from an old Windows XP machine with an HP C1537A DDS3 tape drive. The machine used Backup Exec to create the tapes. In trying to recover the data I constantly get an error that says the data on the tape is inconsistent. I tried to run the HP analysis utility but it said the error log of the drive was full and it would be necessary to do a firmware load to clear it. I therefore loaded the lastest firmware.
I ran the HP analysis utilities using one of the tapes as a scratch tape (to write over):

The tape that was used in the analysis was a maxlell HS-4/125s DDS3 tape -- the same type that was used to create the backup tapes.
Why does the drive think I am using "very old tapes not designed for this drive"? The tapes were witten to by this drive.
What is a "Non-MRS" tape?
The end results appears to be that "no problems were found" but Backup Exec reports that the tapes have inconsistent data.
Any suggestions on how to make the tapes readable by Backup Exec would be appreciated.
I am using Backup Exec 9.1 Rev 4691. Please do not suggest using a later version as this is the latest version that (1) will run on a Windows XP Pro box and (2) that supports the tape drive.

External hard drive speed for backups and archiving

I'm planning to buy a pair of external FireWire hard drives to backup and archive my iBook G4. I've read a couple of product reports that compare read and write speed of hard drives which seems to be a function of each drive's rotational speed.
I then noticed that my iBook's internal hard drive is slower (at 4200 RPM) than either of the external drives I'm now considering (7200 RPM and 5400 RPM). A test report I read showed the 7200 RPM drive duplicating 1GB twice as fast as the 5400 RPM drive when connected via FireWire to a G5.
Will my slower internal hard drive limit the speed of duplication so that there is little or no advantage to the 7200 RPM drive over the 5400 RPM drive for me?

Probably should have been clearer in my initial question. The 7200 RPM drive I'm looking at is a desktop model, and a bit cheaper than the 5400 RPM drive, which is portable. I like the smaller footprint of the portable drive (and the convenience of it being bus powered) but don't want to pay more for those benefits only to be disappointed with its performance.
So, I'm actually trying to decide between a higher speed/lower cost/desktop vs. lower speed/higher cost/portable. If I could determine that the actual performance difference between these was not very significant when used solely to backup and archive my iBook, I'd gladly pay a bit more for the convenience and small size of the portable.
If there indeed is a big performance difference, I'd find space on my desk for the desktop drive and pocket the savings.

Question: DB2 V8.2.2 and speed of backups/restore with TSM

our database is growing and our backups/restore takes longer and longer. We would like to now, if there is an existing IBM tool, with which we could exactly see where our bottleneck is. At the moment we are backing up with four sessions, a 1,7 terabyte database, we are using automatic buffer and parallelism, we have a four CPU (power 5, 1.9GHz) AIX server. The backup takes nine hours. We have identified five components which influense the backup time. CPU-Speed, SAN, Network, TSM and Sessions.

just to give you my five cents.
I would recommend too (like Markus Döhr): Test the whole infrastructure for optimizing backup performance.
You have to keep in mind performance of SAN, Server (HBAs, bandwidth of system busses) and network. I would recommend for the network testing, a tool like netperf (originally from HP, but available for all SAP OSs - compiler necessary) to measure your network environment. You should figure out how much bandwidth one session could achieve. May be you should find out first which network buffer sizes TSM uses, to use the same buffers in the tests. For our environment it showed that we need 4 network sessions to utilize a 1GBit LAN completely. You should also keep in mind, that the system should have enough resources to handle the additional I/Os due to the backup without influencing the production to much.
Instead of using big buffers like Eric recommends, I recommend to use the auto tuning of DB2 backup, which comes with one of the V8 Fixpaks (I think with V8.2 (FP7)). In our test it speeds up the backup a lot. Just run the backup with the command:
db2 backup db SID online use tsm open 4 sessions
DB2 will automatically tune the backup to achieve best possible performance.
In our environment we run a 2.8TB Backup with a backup rate of around 600GB/h which consumes only 12,5% of the possible I/O bandwidth. We assume that this should be no problem even when few of our HBAs have problems (this happens not only in theory - already two times this year). We're using Legato Networker and running a 10GB ethernet exclusively for backup. We already saved the database within 2 hours 16 minutes; if necessary we could do even faster. I think the limit is at the moment is somewhere around 1.8TB/h, But this is neither necessary nor it makes sense (because this would have an impact on our production).

How to speed up backup

My Touch takes about an hour to back up. I syncd yesterday and then today and it's still taking an hour. I have about 60 apps but use only a few on a regular basis and only 3 since yesterday. Is there any way to speed this process up?

Speed up restore from tape

The restore from the tape runs always slow and use only one channel everytime. Is there any way we can speed up the restore using parallellism. Please suggest.

Poor speeds to LTO-5 Tape Drive

I have a new server connected with 8gb Fibre to a Dell TL2000 with an Lto5 drive(IBM LTO-5 Drive). For testing I am pulling directly from an ISCSI device that is using 3 NIC's in MPIO. I can successfully pull 230-250MBps from this Array.
However, The tape is only writing at between 50-60MBps. I can monitor the speed with the Fibre Channel utility. The queue length never exceeds 1. Also the Nic's never exceed 25% utilization and When I create a large copy form the array I can easily
exceed 80% on all of them(when I am going at 250MBps)
CPU does not exceed 5% with 8 cores remaining parked and I still have 8gb of memory free.
So why can DPM not utilize the full bandwidth to feed the LTO5 drive? I need to feed the drive at over 200 so I can get into streaming mode and avoid shoeshinning the tape.

We have tools that mimick the way that DPMRA reads from disks and writes to tapes to try to narrow down where the problem is.
DPMRA reads from a disk shadow copy and we have a tool that mimicks disk reads from a folder and shows disk read speeds in real time.

So, obviously, the bottleneck in the above test shows we have slow local disks, so we would never achieve greater throughput than the disk reads.
If you open a support case with us we can run the tools on the DPM server to get disk read and tape write speeds to see what is happening.

Speed up system exec vi

Hello Guys
I am using a System Exec VI to call and run a .exe program.
When i run the VI it uses a huge amount of CPU resources causung another running program to crash.
Is there any way i can reduce the amount of CPU resources the LabVIEW VI uses to execute .exe program?

Software can often appear as a smooth rock wall with not a crack in sight and no passwords appear obvious (see the Mines of Moria). In which case I approach the challenge in a similar manner to see if there is a back-door I can sneak in through.

When we performing database backup on OSB, Its taking 16 mins for 5MB Database.

Just feel the TC.. if it is dead cold (ie same termperature as ambient) after a few hours.. then the power supply has actually failed.. normally they don't come back on again but the delta brand supply has strange symptoms cf the standard flextronics which are far more common.
If the TC still feels a little warm.. definitely above ambient.. then the board has shut down.
What model is yours?
There is a logic fault in gen 3 boards. I am working at tracing the problem.. but as time goes on the problem becomes more serious until the board power cycles every couple of minutes.
Let me suggest if it is still under warranty or you have AppleCare, get it replaced. The issue will only get worse. If there is anything you want, recover it now whilst it still works and get a replacement. But keep powering the old one to diagnose the problem.
If you can come up with any more info.. logs etc it could help me figure out the issue.

Backup through DB13 take long time

I am using Oracle 9.0 DB in SAP ECC 6.0 (windows 2003) & Size of DB is around 118 GB.For last one week i m facing a problem of slow processing speed of backup in Tape.Its take 2 Hrs for complete backup(previously it was take only 30 mins).

Moving TM disk from Network to USB: cannot see previous backups

Hi,
I have decided to move my external USB disk from the Airport Extreme USB port to my computer USB port to speed up backups and restores.
Unfortunately it seems that I cannot see anymore previous backups in the disk using TM.
The disk was accessed through the network and it was setup to have user level access to it: each user have his folder on the disk.
So, what I have done is to move back the disk to my computer, I have run disk utility to check and fix the disk since when the drive is attached to the AE with user privileges, it will report errors once you connect back to the computer. Once that permission errors were addressed, I have moved the time machine backup to the disk root and I have told TM to use this new disk as backup location.
Then I have made a new backup to the disk and it seems that TM was able to detect the previous backups because it has added only few GB to the backup.
Then I have moved to a random folder were I have made changes, and I have started TM: when I do that, TM window will switch me back to "MyComputer" where I can see all drives.
I can move around but I am unable to move back in time, like there are no other backups.
TM backup file is about 140 GB and I can fully access it by using finder: I see that all previous data is there, but TM cannot see it.
I have not changed computer name,
I have tried to use the TM option to "open other TM disks" but It doesn't show any other disk in the select window.
Does anybody know what is happening and how I can try to fix?

I would like to move from a wired network TM backup to a local firewire/USB backup.
So the first error I have made is to have deleted the user directory in the Airport Extreme external USB disk: I have moved the TM sparse bundle file to the new location but I didn't noticed that other hidden files were there.
Second, I was unable to browse the older TM backups using TM and it seems that I cannot "browse other TM backups" using such TM option because the window were not showing me any drive.
I have then realized that I have to mount the sparse bundle to see it in such TM option: then it seems to work perfectly.
So there is no need for me to find a solution to use again the same backup with the local disk: if I need something in future I will use the TM option to browse other backups and I think I will be able to recover any file from there. May be I cannot recover mails in this way.
I think it is also possible to fix by using the procedure listed in the previous link: I didn't try just because I don't want to spend more time on this issue and because I have not enough free space on other drives... but...
...it should be enought to:
1- connect a new drive to the computer;
2- mount the old TM sparse bundle image;
3- use SuperDuper to copy all contents of mounted sparse bundle image into the new attached drive;
contents of the sparse bundle image seems to be equal to the structure and names used by a new fresh backup on a local USB disk, so I suppose that it could work... if someone wants to try a tell if it is so... thanks!

Deleting In Progress Backups

Hi people, here's the story,
I bought a new HD and wanted to use my old external as my Time Machine back up disk. I backed up my important data and did a fresh install of the OS. With my TM disc plugged in, it tried to do a backup of the new system but ran out of space on the TM disc. I am now stuck with a .inProgress file which i cant seem to delete or move.
What I wanted to do was delete this new backup (the inprogress one) whilst keeping my old backed up data, so wiping the TM Disc is not an option...
The disc also has other 90GB from another backup, unrelated to TM.
How can i delete this file? I think i have heard elsewhere that these backups are 'millions of 8MB files that can freeze up your computer,' is this correct?

Whats the Model number of your Router?
Whats the OS installed on your both the Computers? Are you facing these problem only from your 1 computer or on both the computers you are facing the same problem.

Backups no longer accessible

I've been backing up onto my timecapsule since August - I've accessed it a few times without any problems - but today I can't access any of my backups......
I think the data is still there because the system tells me that I only have 300GB of space left.
This is hugely annoying as something like this needs to be 100% reliable....
Can anyone suggest what might have happened and how I can access the data..

Sorry, does not have a clue what to do, as the situation here is exactly the same.
I can start Time Machine, get the first window with the starry night. But are not able to select prior dates/backups. Has to quit Time Machine with CTRLCMDESC key to get out. Then screen becomes blank for some time, but then back to normal.
I really needed to restore that file yesterday, but Time Machine could not help. Fortunately I'm also running the Synchronize Pro application for my backups to a portable HD, and Synchronize saves deleted files in a special folder (if asked to do so). I could restore it form there.
But this really leaves me with the big (and expensive) question: Why do one actually run Time Machine? (if it's not able to bring back anything from the past, other than frustration...)
I have tried to disable the antivirus application (Filedefense) as others has elsewhere reported about issues with other antivirus software. Also disabled "sleep HD whenever possible" to speed up backup processes.

45 minutes to backup iPod Touch??!

It seems a bit absurd to have to wait 45 minutes for my iPod Touch to backup. Is this an issue with USB 2.0? I miss the FireWire backups of old...

I also have this issue. I use a MBP and all my software (iTunes and Touch) is fully uptodate. The backups were fast to start but now it takes a very long time. My 16GB Touch is only half full to boot.
Most of the times I just cancel the backup.
Anyone else have this issue. I thought the 2.1 upgrade was supposed to speed up backups??
