Speed up BlackBerry Wi-Fi connections a knottyrope tip

These knottyrope tips might help you out. This is not an end all solution but I have come across these issues in the past years. Go slow and document what you do. Worst case is resetting your router to default and starting over.
Router running latest firmware? Update it as many are shipped with and old version as they sometimes sit on a shelf for months.  Also a Wi-Fi router more than 5 years old might not work well with multiple devices.
Using a Hidden SSID? You should never hide SSID - hiding SSID is a violation of the 802.11 spec and this can be a pain with setup. Most new devices can see them anyways.
Using the same SSID as your neighbor? This is not good, you need a unique name or it can try to connect to both. I have seen NetGear 5 times in one neighborhood and after a simple name change you can have fast Wi-Fi
Using 2.4 and 5 ghz on one single SSID? This can be a burden, drop it to 2.4 and it could make a difference. Newer routers support a separate SSID for both frequencies.
Using WiFi B? If not using B then disable it or a rouge device might try to connect and knock your speed down to B speed.
WEP vs WPA? Not all N devices support WEP or WPA, Best to use WPA2 if all devices support it. Don’t try both WPA and WPA2 as some devices get confused. Some Wi-Fi routers do not support WPA2 AES-CCMP just AES, see if yours supports it. Most newer routers do have accelerated AES encryption but not for WEP. Older encryption methods will be slower.
WEP can be hacked in minutes not matter what password you use. If you have no choice but to use WEP, use only one WEP key as some devices will not know what to do with the other ones. Remember thath this encryption method will be slower.
Channel speed settings 20, 40 or both? Try 20 as most will work on it. Some devices will not like 40 only or even set to both. Check this on both 2.4 ghz and 5ghz on dual SSID routers. Using the default channel your router was setup with? Try a different channel other than the common 6 or 11 channel. Use the Auto Channel hopping feature if your router has it, mine didn’t work but it may for you.
Using Multiple Wi-Fi routers? place them on separate Wi-Fi channels so they don’t interfere.
Newer routers do QOS better so don’t be making this change right away on a newer model. older models with QOS for WMM Wi-Fi multimedia and VOIP priority on older models may not work well. if you don’t need or use it, don’t enable it. I turn off all QOS settings with great results since we don’t use the features.
Does your router only support 1 VPN connection? If this is the case then you might not be able to access BIS over Wi-Fi when other devices are using it or VPN. Many newer routers support 4 or more VPN connections.
DNS servers slow? Try OpenDNS.org and see if speed improves.
MTU matched up? Not a common issue but this can be a fun one as not all routers will set it to your ISP setting. 1500 is a standard but you can try 1492 for DSL lines or ones that use PPOE.
Using Extended range? If you don’t have matching card for your brand router it might not work well. Try turning it off.
UPNP turned off? Turn it on as your device may setup some port forwarding rules.
Using ISP modem and your own router/Wi-Fi router? Don’t enable NAT on your own routers as Double NAT can cause connection problems.
All port speeds matched? Check your Router WAN port speed, mine was set to 10Mbit by the ISP before. Also make sure its set to correct duplex mode and match it with other equipment.
Using cordless phones? Replace your 2.4GHz cordless phones with either a 900Mhz or 5.8GHz style so they won’t interfere.
Use Wi-Fi sharing on a PlayBook? It’s important to switch off AP Isolation if your router has it. Mine has it on by default
Custom firewall rules can be fun, try to allow default and slowly make changes and take notes on what you enable or disable.

• Acer Iconia A1-830 and Blackberry z30 Hotspot Connection After OS Upgrade To KitKat 4.4.2

Despite receiving an update for OS KitKat 4.4.2 my Blackberry z30 is still unable to connect to my Acer Iconia A1-830 via HOTSPOT or BLUETOOTH TETHERING. Obviously this is a software issue because the original OS Jellybean 4.2.4 was working fine before the upgrade to KitKat 4.4.2. Acer need to provide a fix so that my Acer Iconia A1-830 and my Blackberry z30 can connect via HOTSPOT or BLUETOOTH TETHERING.

Anything happening with this? I have 3 Acer B1-750s, Android 4.4.4 Kernel 3.10.20+Acer Image version: Acer_AV0K0_B1-750_RV03RC02_WW_GEN1Build #: Acer_AV0K0_B1-750_1.012.00_WW_GEN1 Steps to reproduce:1. Turn on the blackberry hotspot2. Enable WiFi on the tablet3. Select the Blackberry hotspot from the list of available networks4. Enter the WPA pass phrase5. Watch as the Acer repeatedlt tries (and fails) to connect. An open unsecured hotspot is not an option, and in any event the blackberry has no option to disable security. The Acer does connect to Android and iPhone Hotspots with no trouble, but I use a Blackberry in my business operations so those devices don't count.Really need this to work or the Acer tablets I purchased have to be returned for something that works with Blackberry Hotspot, by way of investigating this problem I now know Nexus works properly, as does Samsung)

• Does anyone know of an excellerator that I can down load to speed up my entire internet connection. I have dial up from windstream,i live in middle of no-where,KY and dont have access to high-speed intewrnet here, PLEASE HELP.

My internet connection is very slow dial up thru windstream and they dont offer high speed where i live and neither does anyone except Hughes Net,but they are way to expensive. Not an option for me at this time. I used to have dial-up thru southeast telephone and they gave me an excellerator that sped up everything.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. No windstream doesnt offer that,i asked and they have no intention to do that in the near future. They plan on offering highspeed to everyone in the future, but as of now they dont offer it in my area and have no plans of replacing the phone lines in my area anytime soon either. so until they replace the lines in my area, its not available . I am glad you told me that i cant add it ...Doug

• No speed increase after 24/7 connection

A couple of weeks ago I replaced my broken HomeHub with a new router on an extension cable (oops), all was fine for a couple of days with the usual connection speed of 1890kbps, it was then that the new router decided it was going to reset several times in one day, dropping the speed down to roughly 900kbs. Router was condemned back to where it came, to be replaced by my old (working) HH 1.5, minus the extension cable.
Having followed a few of the messages posted on here with similar issues I tried to follow the advice given by users.
However even after 7 solid days of connection (reported by HH anyway) I have not seen my speed return.
Line Attenuation does look to be the same as it did when I last saw it, which I think is the max that most routers report, as my name suggests, I am a long way from the exchange, but the current speed is hard to live with..
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Many thanks,
Jason.

• Blackberry link wont connect to my z10

I tried to connect my z10 to blackberry link so I could transfer music and pictures.
It has an error message and wont connect unless I restore my entire device to factory settings...
I spent all day getting the phone running and personalized, I don't want to have to restore it all back...
Is there a way around this?
Thanks.

I have the same problem, here is a screen shot. It makes no sense. I hooked my Z10 up to computer and it appeared a a CD which it is suppose to. I installed link and this is what happened right from the get go. There has to be a way to fix this without restoring.

• Z 10 : BlackBerry Protect Device Connection

My device does not appear in my BlackBerry Protect account, all it says is
And as some of us may know that BlackBerry Protect is initially installed on BlackBerry Z 10, so It's not download-able or available on BlackBerry AppWorld, and my account is confirmed and verified, and on the same wireless network, and yes BlackBerry Protect is activated on my device (Z 10).
I tried rebooting my device, turning off and on BlackBerry Protect, changing my password, nothing seems to work.
My BlackBerry Protect account doesn't seem to recognize my device (Z 10)
If you have encountered this and solved before, please do share.

Hey xSolitary,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Thanks for the question.
What version of BlackBerry 10 software are you running? Go to Settings>About to find this information.
Also are you logged into BlackBerry Protect with the same BlackBerry ID?  Also are you connected via Wi-Fi?
I look forward to your reply.
Cheers.

• How to speed up airport making wifi connection after mac wakes up?

Hi,
I have the latest 27" iMac (2011) with the highest spec. I could buy from the Apple Store. (except that I don't have SSD).
When I wake the Mac from sleep mode, it takes 5 - 10 seconds for airport to find my home WiFi signal. I'm now in a house where I have to use WiFi, but even when I was connected to the internet via an ethernet cable in my previous house, it took the same amount of time.
This is hardly the biggest Mac problem in the world, but if there is a way to speed things up, that would be great (when I turn my iPhone or iPad on, for example, I don't have to wait for a connection - it's pretty much already connected).
By the way, my internet network is digital and super fast. Also, I consider myself a computer novice so if any suggestions could be simple and clear, I'd appreciate that.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Kelly:
Glad a re-install solved your issue. However, it is not the only, nor is necessarily the best solution to some issues.
In terms of the re-install one should always backup the Users Folder, if you have any data on it, and any third party apps you want to save.
Again, I am glad your issue was resolved to your satisfaction.
Good luck.

• Good speeds but takes forever to connect

I have a Mini directly connected to a wireless router and a Powerbook wirelessly connected. My ISP is Telus in Vancouver. My speeds are excellent but connecting itself takes forever it seems. When I click a link on a web page the staus bar reports "looking up hostname". It can take anywhere from 20 seconds to two minutes to load the page.
I thought the problem was with Telus but when a friend brought over his PC laptop it made connections with great speed. So now I assume it's a Mac issue. It affects both my Macs.
Telus can't help me. Their support suggested resetting the browsers but as I knew in advance it didn't make any difference. It affects all browsers on both machines.
Apple support didn't even seem to understand what I was talking about.
I posted a query at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14879923 and got this reply:
Well, I have some bad news and some worse news.
The bad news is, this is a MacOS problem. And yes, it is DNS.
The worse news is that getting a local DNS server will likely not fix the problem.
I had a G3 iBook for a while and I noticed this problem (I think I had OS X 10.0.3.) I don't have it anymore cause it was too frustrating. Literally, my P2-266 notebook with 64M RAM browsed the web a **** of a lot faster than the G3-500 with 384M RAM.
I got so frustrated and installed linux on the iBook and all those problems went away.
One of the problems may have been IPv6, but you mentioned that you disabled it.
The other issue was DNS lookup. It wasn't the DNS lookup that was the problem, but it was the reverse DNS lookup. When you connect to your ISP the ISP assigns you a hostname. It seems that OS X isn't setting this hostname to your computer. When you connect to a site, the site may have to look up the DNS for the hostname your ISP assigned to you, and because OS X doesn't seem to set it, it's them timing out trying to get your IP.
Seriously, if you google something like 'ibook slow dns' you'll get a TON of hits.
Is there something in the DHCP that you can enable that will let the ISP set your hostname?
Of course, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone else will point it out, but slow web browsing and DNS are a common complaint on the Macs.
Edit: I used Mac OS for about 4 days before giving up on it, so I won't be much help beyond this, but at least it gives you another path to look at.
Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I thought the problem was with Telus but when a
friend brought over his PC laptop it made connections
with great speed. So now I assume it's a Mac issue.
It affects both my Macs.
Try manually entering your DNS servers in sys prefs->network-> configure -> tcp/ip
There seems to be quite a few posts where OS X is not getting or setting name servers properly via DHCP.
Personally, I have never had a problem like this, so I don't know what's causing this. There are a few possibilities.
If your ISP's DHCP server and the OS X dhcp client are not communicating properly, that could lead to problems like this. Now, where is the fault in that scenario ? Could be the ISP using a crappy DHCP server, or it could be OS X dhcp client being to strict in what it will accept from the dhcp server, or it could be the fault of the dhcp client entirely. But it's probably not going to be resolved until someone who knows how to debug it is having this issue and takes the time to debug it.
I posted a query at
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14879923 and
got this reply:
Well, I have some bad news and
<snip>
The other issue was DNS lookup. It wasn't the DNS
lookup that was the problem, but it was the reverse
DNS lookup. When you connect to your ISP the ISP
assigns you a hostname. It seems that OS X isn't
setting this hostname to your computer. When you
connect to a site, the site may have to look up the
DNS for the hostname your ISP assigned to you, and
because OS X doesn't seem to set it, it's them timing
out trying to get your IP.
This explanation is just plain wrong, and, as was also pointed out, applying to a much older OS.

• Blackberry Desktop not connecting to PC

I'm trying to copy one music file from my PC to my blackberry playbook.  I use my playbook to read books while travelling, check email, and check flight details.  I followed the instructions on the file sharing between a PC and Playbook and My PC recognizes the playbook is connected to the USB port. I have installed the blackberry desktop (Desktop Software v7.1.0 B42 (Multilanguage) and I have restarted my computer.  I have tried launching the Desktop software with the WIFI turned on and off. While my computer sees the Playbook is plugged into the port, I don't see a device drive for the playbook.  When I open the BB Desktop and to connect to my playbook, I get the error message :Blackberry Desktop Software cannot communicate with the connected device. What could be preventing the Desktop software from connecting with the Playbook?  My OS is 2.1.0.197 which is the latest software according to the message on my playbook.  Thanks in advance.

• Blackberry Desktop SW connection issues

I cannot get my PLAYBOOK to communicate with PC :
For 5 days now i've tried every possible permutation of power on / power off / with & without desktop software (PC)started, re-installed : playbook working, charged, under sharing set to WINDOWS and wifi sharing off etc.. as per all the other suggetsions on tihs forum. I've spent about 6 hours on this - how can such a basic problem exist for so many at launch ?
Desktop SW can see the playbook , recognise its PIN, but cannot communicate - it hangs there with the green communicating logo in the bottom right corner :  so I annot share media or files or bacup etc...  Sometimes i get invited to 'update' through a pop-up but this just hangs indefinitely also....
Desktop SW works fine for blackberry bold 9700.... so i dont beleve its a problem with my PC.
Desktop SW is the latest version from the blackberry www.
(I can connect with my MAC however , but i dont travel with my MAC so its not viable solution).
This is very disapointing : such a basic fundamental requirement, and nowhere near out of the box..
Q: is this a known issue ? is there a fix coming soon ? what else can i try, given that the desktop SW can see the playbook , but just hangs ' connecting indefinitely.

Hey JEVANS,
Welcome to the forums.
You may want to try going through the following clean uninstall of the BlackBerry Desktop Software, then reinstall.

• Blackberry Tour Non-connectivity

I just recently received a blackberry tour on Wednesday of last week (Sept 9) and from ever since I have not been able to connect to the internet because my xev are all lower case and I was informed that they should be upper case for it to work. I tried contacting my service provider on numerous occasions and they were not able to help me out even though they said everything seemed fine on their end. I even went to a sprint store in my area of Greensboro, NC and I got a new one on Sept 14 and still experienced the same problem. They even made sure to check my plan and they said it was fine for the blackberry. So now I have to turn you guys and plead for you to help me. I have tried hard as well a soft reset. Registering host routing table, provisioning the phone and so on and so forth on numerous occasions but nothing worked. So please, show me a way to go and let me know as soon as you can.
Regards

Quite honestly, until your device registers upper case, there's nothing we can do...those indicators are between your device and your carriers network...if they can't get the device to function on their network, there's truthfully nothing here we can do to help...I suggest going back to them again and not leaving the store until they get it right.

• Difficulties with internet speed (nothing to do with connection)

The internet on my macbook has been running extremely slowly in comparison to when I first bought it. I know its not relevant to internet connection itself because all other lap tops in my house and at university run normally. I've tried restarting it several times and I have cleaned the hard drive several times so I don't think its an issue with memory or anything like that.
I have also emptied the cache and I've checked the console log (though to be honest I have no idea what I'm looking at there)
Any ideas?

If your router is supplying full protocol speed, you don't say what your router protocol is, 802.11a/b/g/n?, but if your other systems are running at the full speed and you have done good housekeeping chores, perhaps something is wrong with the AirPort circuitry in the MacBook...can you get to an Apple genius bar and have the techs run some diagnostics to test the AirPort circuit?  They can tell if something is amiss.

I've received the same error. It's a known issue with a batch of new readers.  I called RIM and they said an updated software package should be made available online in the next day or so which will address/resolve the problem.
