Speed-up SSD by disabling TRIM?

I read a post in the Corsair forum which says that SSDs can be speed-up considerably by disabling Windows 7 TRIM feature. Did anyone of you try it and does it work?

There is one way to fix this, although you need to have knowledge of registry editing. The detailed steps from Microsoft are as follows:
1.Exit all Windows-based programs.
2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

5.In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6.In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

Is there any way to disable TRIM during installation?

I have a ThinkPad T43, which due to its unorthodox setup for IDE drives (Internal SATA converted to IDE) doesn't work too well with IDE to mSATA adapters. They work fine until you try to use TRIM. Then, you just get a bunch of read errors because of the limitations in converting SATA to IDE to SATA. This means that I can't install without the system giving me read errors. Is there a way to disable TRIM during the installation so that I don't have to install Arch on a hard drive and somehow get it onto the SSD without the SSD freezing up?

SSD 43N3417 Support TRIM?

Using a W510 and want to purchase the SSD 43N3417, but in its current form it does not support TRIM. I spoke to Samsung who indicated a Firmware was released to OEM's enabling this feature.
When will Lenovo release this Firmware Upgrade to end users?

From reading all the forums here, it still remains unclear whether the TRIM support is on for the 43N3417 drives.
The Intel SSD utility on my brand new 19 Feb 2012 maufactured drive says:
Word 169/Bit 0 = 1
Word 69/Bit 14 = 0
           which has been said means the drive does NOT support TRIM.

Those of us buying SSD drives, know TRIM support is required for stability after the early release SSD and the host of problems without it.
FWIW, I've been also using OCZ and Crucial for more than a year without any problems and I know their TRIM is properly ENABLED and it is enabled in Windows 7 too running the latest Intel RST drivers..
Lenovo - we customers need a specific answer to a very simply question. Is TRIM properly enabled on these drives and if so prove it or if not, where's the firmware upgrade to enable it?   After all, we are paying a significantly higher price for this Lenovo branded 256GB drive as a competitive offerings!
Here's a wake up call:   Given the potential KNOWN problems with NOT enabling TRIM as of this date and with Lenovo STILL possibly shipping what are essentially defective SSD without TRIM enabled - we owners are heading for a class-action...

SSD Tunables? TRIM Support?

A few days ago I installed a 128G SSD in my 2008 Macbook Pro (pre-Penryn, last model with "Apple"-Keys). I previously had installed this SSD in my Linux Desktop, where it made a tremendous speed difference compared to the hard drive (which in turn is faster than my MBP HD). The SSD is quick and certainly faster than the HD, but it did not make such a huge difference as on my desktop (might have to do with the fact that I'm using FileVault on my home directory).
About the only thing that's substantially faster is starting Windows or Ubuntu under Parallels, that's really crazy fast now. Two or three times I also had the impression of a few seconds "freeze" (that should not happen with my Indilinx based SSD), but I could not reproduce it.
Now I am asking the knowledgable: Are there any settings that improve speed or lifetime of my SSD? Most importantly: does Leopard have TRIM support (my SSD does)? I recall reading an article quite some time ago that OS X would be "TRIM ready". Are there any other settings? In Linux I disabled the elevator algorithm, since it is useless on SSDs and increases latency and also set "noatime" in order to reduce writes?

MacRumors reported Apple add TRIM support for Apple SSD's in 10.6.8. Am I reading something wrong?

Brand New T410 - Current 128MB SSD Brand and TRIM Support? Also i7-620m vs i5-560m?

I'm thinking of taking advantage of the T410 sales and get a 128MB SSD as part of the configuration.
1) What's the brand of 128MB SSD used in the current T410 builds? (searching found Samsung SSDs are commonly used in the T410 builds -- that still true)?
2) Do the latest SSDs being used support TRIM?
3) With the current sales, you can get a i7-620m with a 128MB SSD for only $100 more than a i5-560m with a 250GB spindle drive. Seems that the i7 and SSD is the obvious choice. Will battery life be the same with the i7 configuration compared to the i5? I know both are dual-cores that run at basically the same clock speeds, and the i7 has more cache.

1.) The brand of 128GB SSD in the current T410 builds is either that of Samsung, Toshiba, or Intel. All of these brands use different controllers (AFAIK). I believe it's also more 'luck-of-the-draw' than anything when you get the T410: an interesting choice since all 3 makes of drive have different speeds due to the different controllers (and they aren't the fastest controllers on the market by any stretch though I believe that all 3 offer similar performance).
2.) Yes, they should (as these controllers do).
3.) Battery life will be exactly the same. The only thing about the i5 vs. the i7 is that the i7 has a bigger turbo boost than the i5 (which doesn't really kick in during normal use)- all other clocks are the same (and the CPU's both kick off at maximum 35 watts of heat- they use the same amount of power).
From what I've heard, though, the new T420 (which should be available sometime this month) has better battery life and supports faster SSDs should you decide to add one later if you go that route.

Does Apple ssd ts128a supports trim?

I just bought a second hand macbook pro (mid - 2012) with an Apple SSD TS128A. After a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.2 system profiler shows that trim disabled. Am I doing something wrong? As far as I know, Apple SSD supports trim out of the box. Any help would be appreciated!

This hack works on my 2010 Macbook Air, and my 2011 Macbook Pro running LION. The 2010 Macbook Air obviously has an Apple SSD in it - I still needed this hack to enable TRIM.
As with anything like this make sure you backup first. I've had it running since LION was released and it's been fine so far.

Before installing "Lion", I did a speed test, with these results
My surprise is that the SSD is very slow in writing... Read results speed It´s Ok...
FW up to update v1.35 (factory default)... And the install "Trim Enabler" because the result It´s the same...

Problems with 17" 2011 MBP optibay sata speeds for SSD.

I have a 17" early 2011 MBP. I noticed that the optibay SATA is only 3GB/S. Since I need to set up an internal RAID with SSD (SATA III 6Gb/S), and newer versions are now supporting this (I was under the impression that my earlier one would too), what are my options to get the optibay to work at the proper speed? Do I need to replace the MBP? Are there fixes that can be done by Apple repair?
I need this for a number of on site video editing jobs that I need to complete over the next four months. without the RAID set up, i don't see how I can do this. I am also in process of getting the new thunderbolt RAID for in the office.
Can anyone give me advice on how to address this issue? I can swap the system as long as I can pull the current disk drive (and replace with the one that was delivered with the system), if that is what I need to do.

What little I know about this for sure is that there are at least 2 different optical drive interfaces for the 2011 17" MBP.
I bet you can guess the difference; iirc correctly, the ones that shipped early on have the SATA II interface, while later/current ones have the SATA III. You can check yours in System Profiler, but again, I bet you know already. Again, iirc, the early ones cannot be updated to run at SATA III/6Gbps.
I don't know any of the above with 100% certainty, so I would continue looking/asking, but if it is correct, that means you'd need a new MBP (and need to make sure it's newer stock; what the cutoff is, I have no idea). fwiw

Speed of SSD vs 5400 rpm Serial ATA

On the online Apple store the difference between SSD hard drives and the 5400 rpm Serial ATA drive is said to be in durability. How does the speed of the two kinds of drives compare? I know that 7200 rpm is preferred for video editing because the drive can be read faster. Is there any difference in how fast a 5400 rpm drive and an SSD drive can be read? Apple does not mention this on their website, which I think they would do if the SSD drive was faster (which is why I ask).

SSDs are in their infancy, and there's a huge range of speeds among the many currently available models. All of them will probably be faster for all purposes than a 5400RPM hard drive, but some are slower in some uses than a 7200RPM hard drive. The fastest and most expensive ones are several times faster than any hard drive in most operations, and somewhat faster than hard drives even in the operations that SSDs perform most slowly. If you are thinking of buying a SSD, I recommend waiting a year: prices then will be half what they are now, and speeds will be uniformly higher, expecially among lower-priced SSDs.

Question about AHCI setting for my pavilion DV6T-2000 in order to use SSD driver with TRIM support

My operating system is Window 7 ultimate
1.I have just updated my ssd Corsair P256 firmware to the newest version which enables Trim
2.I typed " fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify " and got the result " 0 " , so it is good.
3.I go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci" and know that the "Start"name has Data value "0".
4. I go to device manager and click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". However, the only thing which i saw was:
"Intel(R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port"
i didn't see the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller"
i tried to go the Bios setting to enable AHCI but HP bios won't let me change any setting except Booting priority. I am using the newest Bios version from HP(I have just updated it two days ago).
So my question is that: am i on set? or what i should do now to make the Trim work
if i am on set, does the Trim run automatically? do i need to do anything to maintain the SSD's performance?

If you right click on "Intel(R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port" and select properties, then go to the Driver Tab and hit the Driver Details button, you will see the iastor,sys driver is installed, so AHCI is enabled.

Apple Branded SSD shows no Trim ??

So I just installed a Toshiba / Apple SSD in my 2011 MBP, installed ML fresh install and it's saying No Trim Support ?? What gives ??

Could it be that I needed to install Snow Leopard 10.6.8 first ?

Please SHOW me where in any version of OS X Disk Utility there is a FORMAT system. Only in the partitioning section is there any reference to formatting and you can't access that without first selecting the Partition Layout options.
So if the OP Formatted the drive he also partitioned it.
A partition is a partition. If I partition and format a drive Mac Extended (Journaled) using SL 10.6.x disk utility it will still be find to install Lion or MT Lion without first Re-Partitioning and formatting using the disk utility from one of those newer version of OS X.
Really if it was enough for it to be Labeled Apple SSD TRIM would be enabled.
Also there is NO mention of the Age of the drive or where the OP got it. So just how do you know it is from 2010.
As I said before a DRIVE CAN NOT BE FORMATTED without first haviing a valid PARTITION ON IT.

Mentioned APPLE SSD TS256B is a drive from 2010 year Macs and it is installed now in 2011 mbp - so it was not new, and as not new it was partitioned at Apple before using it for original BTO Mac.
At a time it was like 10.6.3-10.6.7 OS X, exactly pre-trim system which (and under) it was partitioned.
And I'm NOT suggesting him to re-partition drive. I suggest just run drive repair for Disk Utility 'update boot components as needed'.
Also trim is enabled exactly based on drive internal name, it should begin with "Apple SSD", that alone enough.

Try opening the Intel Rapid Start Technology Manager in Windows and see what it says. The actual bootable 8 gig acceleration cache is still active per the screen you posted. The mSSD is divided into two partitions and you should be able to see what is going on with the other partition on the mSSD through that manager.

In OS X Mavericks, how can you tell if TRIM support is able/disabled?

In 10.7 and 10.8 I was able to go to About this Mac>More Info>System Report>Hardware>Serial-ATA and find all the info pertaining to the HD/SSD including if TRIM abled /disabled. In 10.9 you can't tell.

Yosemite and Trim Enabler for SSD?

I have recently replaced my macbook pro's hard drive with a SSD. Currently I am running mountain lion but would like to upgrade it to Yosemite. Upgrading it is not an issue. However I have learned that enabling Trim Enabler on Yosemite will open up security issues and I read an article on Cindori website that there is no other alternative for this. I am wondering if anyone has found a way to install Yosemite and use Trim Enabler without sacrificing the security features on mac. Also what will happen if I upgrade to Yosemite and not use Trim Enabler at all? How will it affect the SSD?
