Speed up website?

Hi,
We've noticed our google rankings and DA have dropped recently and when we run google tests it looks like a speed issue on our site.
Pingdom says our site is slower than 84% of websites.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the speed of our site or somewhere I can find this info for BC sites?
Would love a point in the right direction.
Thank you

Google's PageSpeed Insights tool provides straightforward advice on how to improve your page's performance.
I gave it your site; it scored 35/100 for mobiles and 48/100 for desktop browsers.
Just implementing two of the high-priority suggestions could cut ~620KiB from the page weight for desktop browsers -- 385KiB from crushing the images, 237KiB from minifying your CSS & JS. (what!)
Not to mention the requests that are render-blocking.
As for actually optimizing your images, there's a quick checklist here, which is part of a thorough guide here.
(Ignore the "Leverage Browser Caching" recommendations, there's naught you can do about that)
TheBCMan - where did you get the figure of 57.9K from? My dev tools report 1.6mb downloaded over 96 requests for that page...

  • Speeding up website loading

I have created a new website with a video gallery in AS3 and am trying to speed up the loading of the page for this as currently it pauses before appearing on the page. I have tried to get all the movies down to as low a size as possible but still it doesn't fly in straight away.
The video gallery is loaded via an external swf so would this have anything to do with it at all?
The web address is as follows and the sections taking time to appear are 'portfolio' and 'websites etc.'
    http://www.khawkinsdesign.com/
Any help would be much appreciated.
    KJoe

You landing page is more than 1MB, portfolio page is 9.5 MB - of course it takes noticeable time for them to load. There is not much you can do as far as progressive flvs are concerned if you want to preload them. Load would be much more streamlined if you used images of the first frames for video thumbnails and started playback only on roll over.

  • How Can I Speed My WebSite Up?

I've been having a go with iWeb '09 and have found it very easy to use and get on with!
I have a website that contains photo galleries of all the places I have visited in England over the last couple of years or so.
    www.ketrin.co.uk
As I'm new to iWeb I was wondering if you could take a quick look at how I have laid it out to see if you can come up with any suggestions on better ways I might be able to layout the website?
As there are lots of photos in the galleries it could just be me but it seems to be quite slow at loading the pages such as Northamptonshire where I have lots of galleries.
My other website www.playedforandgot.co.uk has also been created by iWeb (not quite finished it yet) and is hosted on the same server as the other site and seems to load a bit quicker.
I'm happy with the layout of www.ketrin.co.uk and it looks fine (for my first attempt anyway) but I'm just looking for any ideas/suggestions from people who have more experience of this excellent piece of software.
    Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Some of the things you can do is to limit the use of frames and borders which makes the site "heavier" for rendering. As for Northamptonshire you might break that into 2 or 3 pages to there will be fewer albums per page.
Using an optimizing application on your site can help bus since it's so photo intensive it may not give you the speed increase you are looking for. (For what it's worth it loaded very fast for me but I have a very fast cable connection) IWSM will reduce html files by a great amount but photos not so much. You can set the quality level to 69% which will reduce images fairly well and keep image quality good. It will help with the graphic frames and borders, changing them to jpgs and downsizing.
You can test it out by publishing to a folder and running it on that folder. It will only optimize 50% of the files in the demo mode but might give you an idea of what it can do. Also see Old Toad's Tutorial #12 - Using Web Site Maestro to Publish to MobileMe.
A lot of the things you can to do in iWeb make it faster results in eliminating some of the bells and whistles of iWeb, frames, borders, etc, around images, text boxes and the like. That may not be what you want to do.
To make your site faster and more compatible with Internet Explorer go to the following pages of Roddy;s iWeb for Musicians site: http://www.iwebformusicians.com/WebMusic/iWebandInternetExplorer.html and http://www.iwebformusicians.com/SearchEngines/Optimize.html.

  • Slow Load speed of websites

I am having trouble with the website load speed on My 2010 Mac.  The page load is very slow and 30% of the time the page will not load at all.  Looking for what I can change on the Mac or if it is my ISP.

First thing to do is reset the modem and router. If necessary do hard resets, you will need the manuals on both  devices to know how to do that. Because "slow" is a relative term you may need to do more digging. If it was once fast and the resets do not help then download and install iStumbler (Google it) and look to see if you are competing with your neighbors for a Wi-Fi channel. Let iStumbler run about 30 minutes and check to see what channel you and the neighbors are using. If you see you're competing with some neighbors change the router's channel to one not being used.

  • Speed of loading website

Within just a couple of days I have been able to recreate a Windows-made website into a MAC version, and this being a newbie to website design at all ... it says a lot about the intuitiveness of iWeb.
However, I now notice that the MAC version loads much slower than the original PC version, and is a factor bigger in size (5,2 instead of 1 MB). The URL is www.temmermanleuven.be
Can you please help and give tips to speed this website up. I still have the files for the PC version by the way.
    Greetz.

The link you posted is for the Windows creates site right? Your pages range from 8 to 11 files, nothing large or unusual. The largest file is the header jpg at 70 KB. Can you publish your iWeb version somehow, give it a different site name initially, so we can compare the two?
If you put borders around photos or text boxes that adds a lot of image files which will slow loading. You could try using Web Site Maestro to optimize your iWeb site. It has reduced the size of some of my sites by up to 49% or so.

  • Is there a fix for slow wifi speed on U310?

I bought early july a IdeaPad U310 in Texas, and then I moved to Belgium to study. The wifi speed was awefullt slow. So having read the forums, i rang the support in Belgium, and after long discussion, i sent the laptop for repair. Service was fine, but extremely slow, with no information what so ever of where the pc was, if it was received for reparation... anyway, three weeks after, so that today. i received it back and, according to the intervention report, the wireless controler was replaced. The thing is, the problem ofthe U310 is not a defectuous part, it is something more fundamental. I tested the PC in various speed test website.
I have three laptop, a Lenovo W520, a HP Mini 110, and the IdeaPad U310.
    I used speedtest.net and brosdbandspeedchecker.co.uk
    the result are
Lenovo W520: Download: 19.64 Mbps Upload: 1.99 Mbps
HP Mini 110: Download:15.72 Mbps Upload: 1.28 Mbps
    IdeaPad U310: Download 4.75 Mbps Upload:2.1 Mbps.
Now, the speed on U310 is not that catastrophic (not like the 0.3 Mbps I was getting) but still not great and rather much slower than the two other machines, and not fast enough to watch a movie in streaming, it pauses all the time.
So what should i do? Send it again?
But is there a fix to the problem? Because keeping changing the wifi controller as they did did not fix the PC. The MEDION Repair center, which is in charge to repair Lenovo for northern europe (i guess) stated as well that the test "#winstress#" as been done. What is it? Yes the wifi works, but way too slow.
    Thanks for advice.

In fact changing the pwoer setting on the N-2200 doesn'tt change the amount of power it gets.

  • Verizon.net Email Speeds Do Not Match FIOS Line Speeds

In the past months since about September 2012, Verizon email servers are not moving data as fast as the line speeds customers are subscribing to.  Such as, Fios 15/5 mbps line speed package, using a browser and going to a speed test website, the results are equal to or better than 15/5.
Except for when Verizon.net customers use the Verizon.net email accounts which come with the internet package. Those speeds have degraded, especially when moving from the old email servers to the new ones (incoming.verizon.net to pop3.verizon.net).  The overall speed with their email, via browser or software (Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc.) has dropped to as little as 1.0 mbps when obtaining email, especially those which have some payload such as a 6 MB .pdf, .jpg., .tiff, .zip, .rar and so forth.
What's fowl about this is, Verizon.net support folks have no access to the email network so they are unable to communicate to those running the email servers that customers are unhappy with the service.  Mostly, those who are new to Verizon Fios just continue to use their Gmail or Live accounts which just happen to work satisfactorily, speeds in the area of the above example, 15/5 mbps.
What's really bad about this is, upgrade to the Quantum Fios packages and guess what?  Email speeds don’t move an inch faster.  This means, the email network/servers with Verizon.net are speed regulated outside of the customers line speed connection.  Too bad, customers pay extra for more speed yet, email with Verizon remains at the slow pace. I have much issue with this since in the past, this had never been an issue.  Now that Verizon has Fiber, it is? It would be nice if they published this alongside of the many features that come with a Fios ISP account however, it is nowhere to be seen.
This is obviously bait and switch service and features.

You don't go into the details as to why the account was suspended ... that background might be helpful since you're asking others for their opinion.  In general it sounds like the account was "deleted" at which point all mail is bounced because the address no longer exists -- but Verizon holds the name in reserve for some period of time to prevent someone from re-registering it in case an error was made and for some level of security, I suppose.
Anyhow ... on your commentary about not using an @verizon.net address as your primary address ... I think you will have this with many providers.  Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail all do this if you terminate the account (they do have a suspended account due to inactivity feature which operates differently, but pretty much do the same thing for deletions and such.   I don't use the @verizon.net account as my primary for a different reason however -- my primary address is provider agnostic.   I can move providers (although I'm quite happy with FiOS at the moment) -or- if at some point down the road I have to move out of Verizon territory, my email address will not need to change.  I used this little fact to my advantage when I moved from Comcast to Verizon a few years ago -- no one knew I changed providers because my email address didn't change.   Now .. I don't use one of the free services for email, I own my own domain name (about $10/year from the likes of GoDaddy) and have my domain hosted on the Google Apps tier (but even without that, GoDaddy will do basic forwarding for you of any email address to whatever mail account you're presently using).    Something to think about.

  • Ridiculous Connection Speeds

    Hi All,
Following issues with line noise which have gone since removing the front plate from my OpenReach master socket and plugging directly in there, I now have an issue with really poor latency and speeds. I don't want to have to restart the HH3 as it's been up for over 3 days now (a record) which is strange as the HH3 shows uptime of 2days 4hrs - last IP change was 26/4 15:33.

    Hi klinkenhoff,
Your IP Profile would be about 2mbps as it's 88.2% of your current connection speed which was 2.212 Mbps from your last set of adsl stats.
Your throughput speed is the speed you experience when using the Internet and is also the speed which speed test websites use.
Your throughput speed will be slightly slower than your IP Profile and can be effected by how you connect to your router/home hub such as Wifi or Ethernet and also network traffic and congestion.
    So:
    1) Your connection speed is the speed which your homehub/router and the local exchange is connected at.
    2) Your IP Profile is a speed limit applied to your broadband service by the local exchange. Its purpose is to ensure the exchange doesn't 'overload' your broadband service by sending more data down your phone line than it (or your BT Home Hub, router or modem) can physically handle.
As your on ADSL2+ your IP Profile will always be 88.2% of your connection speed.
    3) Your throughput speed is the speed you experience when using the Internet and is also the speed which speed test websites show, it can be effected by how you connect to your router/home hub such as Wifi or Ethernet and also network traffic and congestion
    Hope that makes sense.
    Cheers

  • Strange download speed / latency problem

    Hi all,
I've lately been having problems with only my download speed and latency when gaming online. Sometimes I'm getting my normal full 10MB connection and other times it randomally drops down to between 0.1 and 4MB, it doesn't matter if it is peak hours or not it is very random. When I am getting my full speed all websites/gaming online work perfectly but when the speed drops even to 4MB or so everything requires constant refreshing and my gaming online becomes impossible.
I've noticed that sometimes when the phone rings the broadband will disconnect, and my upload speed appears to be unaffected.
I have tried a quiet line test and it was clear so I'm not sure what is going on.
I have tried different routers/cables/filters and have also tried restarting the router.
I read about packet loss and thought it was maybe an issue to do with that, and so when doing a pathping to BT.net i've noticed that when the speed is high and everything appears to be working I get no packet loss, but when it is slow and things don't want to load I get some (as shown below). I have no idea if this is related but I will link as much information as i can to see if it is any help.

  • Weird speed issue!

    Hi,
Has anyone else, since about 30 minutes ago, been getting very slow download speeds from websites? I can max out my connection from newsgroups (9.3mb/s) but no matter what site I try, & I truly mean any, I'm getting about 100k/s max download speed!
Am currently trying to download some drivers & software from amd's site, also guru3d and nvidia & all 3 are giving me the same very low d/l speed!. I've also tried a few other sites that have files to download and they all give me the same low speeds. Thought it might pc related but I tested another desktop, also 2 laptops and all show the same low http download speeds.
There appears to be nothing wrong with my ip profile, downloading from newsgroups shows that, just wondering if any others are experiencing very low speeds downloading from websites at the moment.

Tracerts show nothing out of the ordinary, is there anyone out there who could do me a favour & have a go at downloading some of the test files they have over at thinkbroadband & let me know what d/l speeds you obtain, I'm getting about 1.3mb/s which is lower than what I had on my old Be* connection!
Update : Using a download manager has helped alot, have gone from 100 odd k to 5+mb/s download from all the sites I've been testing, multiple threads for downloading certainly help when you have alot of bandwith to play with!

  • Linksys WRVS4400N V1.1.13 slows down Internet speed by 50%

    Hi,
Recently I upgraded my Internet speed at the ISP from 10Mbps to 25Mbps and the problem is that I am measuring only 15Mbps using speedtest.net.
On the day when the tech came out to install the new DSL modem, he noticed the difference and as part of troubleshooting, he bypassed the Linksys router and voila the net speed measured 25Mbps using speedtest.net.
So, why my Linksys WRVS4400N V1.1.13 acts like a bottleneck in this case? I didn't have this problem at the speed of 10Mbps. The upload speed is OK, it is 5Mbs with or without the DSL modem.
Does someone have any idea how to troubleshoot this problem?

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the tipp on disabling the IPS, I did it and the speedtest.net test resulted in 21Mbps.
So, it is already a great improvement.
It is interesting though, that on the IPS page of the router, all four protocols were disabled (http, ftp, telnet and rpc), so I am not sure if it was doing anything useful anyway. Am I right?
Since the tech from my ISP was using speedtest.net for testing and did get 25Mbps, I figured that it should work for me too. I am not sure if our ISP has a website for the same purpose.
In order to eliminate any bugs I was considering upgrading the firmware on my router, but I am not sure which firmware I should use, it seems to me that there are two sets of firmwares available for my router one with VPN version 1.xx the other one is VPN ver. 2.xxx
The model# of my router is WRVS4400N v1.1  but I am not sure whether to upgrade to one or the other VPN version is up to me or the VPN version range is already set in my router and I cannot upgrade to 2 from 1 in case I have VPN v1. (How can I tell which version of VPN I have on my router?)
8 hours later I added this text:
I did another test on speedtest.net and at this time I got 24.35Mbps, so you were right, speedtest.net won't give you a reliable speed value if you just run it once and you want to make a decision based on that. (Btw., I contacted our ISP, they don't have a net speed measuring website within their own network.)
So, I am done with the speed problem thanks to your right on target suggestion, but could you please, answer my other two questions:
    - Was the IPS in my router doing anything usefull to me since all 4 protocolls were disabled - until now?
    - About the firmware dilemma.
    Thanks.

  • Network speed monitoring?

    Hey,
Does anyone know of any software that will monitor AND log my network connection information (throughput in/out, specifically)? I've found plenty of programs that will monitor the connection, but will not save the data over time.
I want to do this because I'm suspicious of my ISP... I have the " up to 18mb/s" service, and various internet speed tests ROUGHLY corroborate this speed, however it seems like almost every website I go to (except for the speed test websites LOL) loads incredibly slow.
Ultimately I'd like to have a printable graph of my network throughput over a specified period of time (days, weeks, months, even years).
    Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Greenwall, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Does anyone know of any software that will monitor AND log my network connection information (throughput in/out, specifically)?
    http://homepage.mac.com/rominar/net.html
I want to do this because I'm suspicious of my ISP... I have the " up to 18mb/s" service, and various internet speed tests ROUGHLY corroborate this speed, however it seems like almost every website I go to (except for the speed test websites LOL) loads incredibly slow.
See if this speeds it up...
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

  • ITunes download speed

Im experiencing severe fluctuations in download speed from iTunes. One minute its fast and then it slows right down. Is anyone else experiencing this? doing it on my iPhone and PC. I have never had this problem before. Not sure if its iTunes or my ISP, but I can download web pages with no problems.

In the last month or two iTunes Store in the UK has become so slow that it's virtually useless at times, and I think it's probably ISP throttling to blame, but Apple may also have a hand in it.
Virgin Media in the UK openly throttles traffic according to a complex and ever-changing customer disservice policy http://www.virginmedia.com/traffic
However, I've studied the current Virgin throttling policy and it doesn't account for the abysmal iTunes Store download speeds we're experiencing. Specifically:
    - It is not unusual for my 100Mbps down Virgin service to actually run at close to rated speed, and it almost always tests (ookla speed test website, or FTP to a server with a gigabit internet connection at my company's UK data centre) at least 40Mbps down.
    - Virgin claims that "fair use" of my 100Mbps service is 10GB during the period 4-9pm, and that once I've used that they will throttle my download speeds by 50% for 5 hours.
    - It's not that unusual for me to exceed the 10 GB limit.
    - If Virgin's policy is to throttle me 50% from 100 to 50 I should be seeing something like 50 down. But actually I NEVER see that (even if I'm on a gigabit fibre connection at the office, so I think Apple DOES have some sort of throttling), but I do frequently see iTunes running at 18-20 down. So being throttled by Virgin from 100 to 50 should make no real difference.
    - HOWEVER, on my Virgin connection, evenings in the last 2 months I'm FREQUENTLY getting 2 Mbps OR SLOWER itunes downloads.
    - Now here's the rub: at the same time I'm being effectively prevented from using iTunes or Apple TV, I can run a speed test (or download a file from my data centre OR pull streaming video from a server at my data centre) at 20-60 Mbps.
SO... It appears that Virgin may be SELECTIVELY throttling iTunes and/or Apple is throttling us.
Anyone have any further input on this? Or corroboration?

Here are my speed test results via http://www.speedtest.net/
    35.44Mbps Download & 18.63Mbps Upload with a ping of 27ms
Have already phoned BT about the issue the first time, when they told me to reset the modem, this was despite the service not having been active for 10 days & I was under the impression that you are supposed to leave it to acheive best speed. I have saw the connection wirelessly get about 63Mbps down & 18/19Mbps up for several days at a time.
The problem seems to be, its running at a speed where browsing is generally always fast enough. I am only catching that the connection speed is essentially half of what it should be when I run speed checks via several speed checking websites including BT's own.
I have read the problem of Christmas lights, & at least in my home for now, I can eliminate that as the cause. I don't have any Christmas decorations/lights up just now. Just wondering if there is anything that could explain why I am getting such low download speeds, but the upload remains on Infinity 2 levels, when previously I know the connection can run a lot lot faster.
Any help advice would of course be greatly appreciated.

Just restarted my Home Hub 5 & this is the result from the internal Hub manager.

Not quite the dizzy heights of 70Mbps I've seen before, a little improvement which I've also saw before upon a restart/reset. Just wondering what the issue is with the speed dropping. When I have BT Broadband with the Home Hub 3, I never had any issues with speed, it connected & was rock solid. Already regretting upgrading to BT Infinity 2 as when you don't seem to check the speed you are getting, it seems to drop. Only noticable when you actually run a speed check to see if you are actually getting what you are paying for.
Surely I shouldn't need to keep resetting/restarting my Home Hub 5? I know its bad for the connection & to be honest I think its an issue with BT's new installation of FTTC cabinets in my area. The engineer changed my telephone socket face plate over, so its a filtered socket at the main line. No other phones in the house have filters on them as they are no longer needed, so I'm just looking for answers as to why I'm seemingly not getting anywhere near the speed I am paying for (I know with the internet speeds can vary, but its been twice now in about a month I've caught this connection running at just over 30Mbps, when its happily ran before at nearer 70Mbps).
Hopefully the further tests/results can shed some light on this for someone more knowledgable.
Thanks again for the replies so far & of course for any further help/advice with regards this issue.

  • Macbook air Internet Speed?

Im thinking of making the upgrade from Toshiba Satellite C655d-S5300 to the 2011 11 inch baseline macbook air.Do you guys think I will see a significant improvement in internet loading speed. Will websites load alot faster?

To expand on Meg's comment if I may, your access speed is dependent upon the speed of your wireless, whether the router supports IEEE 802.11a,b,g, or n, and the speed of the service from your internet service provider.  You cannot go any faster than those pieces of the puzzle.
Only way you can see an increase over the Toshiba is if the Toshiba does not support the n-protocol, which the MBA does, and your router is n-protocol capable.
