Speedbooster?

i've juz bought a linksys WRT54GS wireless-G broadband router... well... i have a qns abt this product... i was told tat speedbooster is supposed to give me speed up to 125mbps right? well... i connected everything and according to my linksys wireless network monitor, i showing speed ranging from 18mpbs to 36mbps... is this normal? sldnt i be getting speed of 125mbps or at least close to it? is this how speedbooster supposed to work? or did i understood it wrongly? can someone pls clarify? thx...

Linksys advertises the WRT54GS as being "up to 35% faster throughput" than ordinary wireless g speed.  Ordinary wireless g speed is 54 Mbps.
The speed that you get from your router will depend on what wireless adapter you are using.  If you use an ordinary wireless G adapter, your maximum connection speed is 54 Mbps.  If you use a Linksys wireless adapter with Speedbooster, you can the faster throughput.  (I am uncertain if this means 73 Mbps, or simply faster throughput at 54 Mbps.)
These are the maximum possible speeds.  Several factors can degrade your connection speed.  To improve your connection speed, do the following:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, Bluetooth (including Bluetooth game controllers), microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Hope this helps.

  • Wireless WRT54GS speedbooster question

    Hello everyone.
I have a few questions if someone could give me some answers. I'm using Vista Ultimate. I've got to tackle  installing the router again since I have a different computer and then I'll have to set up networks to other computers here (3) actually. But I have had my wireless speedbooster for a year and now got to go through the whole process again. My question is why do they call it wireless when you have to plug in cables? What is the wireless part suppose to consist of? Someone came to my house this past weekend and said something about it and it did make me wonder about that.
And how far can you actually set another computer to your network. Is it only in your household location or can you let someone 10 minutes away to network with you or add them on your network.
I tried to search for the wireless question but I couldn't find it and I did go under general question but for some reason couldn't find a new message so I could ask. It's been very aggravating and I didn't remember it being this aggravating before. Also I've read here that I don't have to install the router through the CD. I have tried to do that on these vista windows which I hate and I'm going to install windows 7 over this when I get the chance but I got to tackle one thing at a time. You'll never know if you don't asking tried to connect the router and computer using the CD it goes through the whole thing but never really configures it but then it was very very slow after that so it must have done something. So  now it's not even plugged  in or connected at all. Ever since I disconnected and connected my DSL back to my computer I have these issues  whenever I cut my computer it telling me these message. When booting up 1-"cannot communicate with DNS 208 104 244 45 network diagnosis pinged the remote host with no response". And this message "windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding at this time this usually means the firewall is running between the two and computers (I have only one connected at all at home for now!) and blocking the domain. Windows have confirmed that the firewall on computer is confirmed correctly to allow this connection but however a firewall is blocking your connection". Can anyone guide me somewhere or give me links to follow because I have a serious cornea infections and hoping that I haven't lost my eyesight in one eye and I'm not suppose to be on the computer to let my eye rest.
Any help would be very much appreciated very much
    Thanks, Harley123

The Router which you have its an 4 Port Ethernet / Wireless Router. Well its not necessary to Hardwired your computer always to the Router. Once your Router is Configured properly, then you don't need to connect your computer, you can use all the computers Wirelessly and they all will be able to go online... Just for an Initial Setup you need to Hardwired your computer to the Router, Once its done then you need to unplug the Ethernet cable from your Computer and your computer should be able to go online wirelessly.
The wireless signals of your Router can go upto 80 to 100fts, Not beyond that. As you have mentioned that you want to share the connection with some who is 10min away from your Place, then its Impossible.
There are 2 different ways to configure your Router, Using the Setup Disk or Configuring all the settings on your Router Manually.
Whenever you connect your Modem to your Computer and if you face that problem just you need to Unplug the power from the Modem wait for 10sec and replug to the power to your Modem and check if you are Online.
Windows Vista has Many issue while connecting to Internet. Sometimes you get all the information on your computer and your computer is properly connected, but the Vista computer doesn't let you go Online.

  • WRT54GS with SpeedBooster MAJOR ISSUES!

I purchased and used a Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster back in January of 2006 for my small apartment in Manhattan. My roommate and I had no problems with the router at the time, and we were happy with its performance. I left Manhattan last April, and moved into a home in Boston. I left my roommate our router, and purchased the same model router for my home in Boston. I use both a desktop PC and windows laptop in my new home. I have had problems with my WRT54GS speedbooster router from the start. Mainly, an inconsistent connection. I find myself unplugging and replugging the router 3 - 4 times a week to reconnect my internet connection regarding my desktop. As if that weren't enough, I have had major headaches with the internet connection on my wifi laptop. My laptop is 2 years old, running on a G network, and often times I will either have no or limited connection in my bedroom where I do work on my laptop (my bedroom is probably 30/40 feet away from where the router sits, on a higher floor). I've read numerous gripes online, whether it be an article or customer reviews, regarding this specific model router and consumer issues with it. Can anybody help? I really am on the verge of purchasing a non-Linksys G router with hopes to have a CONSISTENT internet connection. Thanks.

I downloaded the Easylink Firmware tool. To upgrade the firmware, I was prompted to plug the ethernet cable (from the back of my wired computer) into the laptop itself, with the other end already in "port 1". Well, the router never recognized the ethernet cable in port 1, so when i clicked to proceed forward, the router was not recognized, nothing happened, and I have the same problem. I vaguely remember now when I first got the router, I went through the necessary steps with the router and the PC, did everything fine. Then I just started up my laptop, it recognized the network created on my PC, and I just used the internet on my laptop that way. However I have always received the following message when starting up my laptop: "Duplicate name exists on the network". I usually just X out of it, and proceed forward. So my question is, did the actions listed above create my current problem? Why isn't my router recognizing the ethernet cable plugged into it from the laptop? Also, is there any way to test if the issues stems with my network adapter in my laptop???

  • How do i know about the SpeedBooster?

I was wondering if i had to turn on the speedbooster on my router. The connection on it is only 54mbs and i didnt know if it should be faster with the boster, plus i have the wireless adapter that has speed boost both at 35%, im new to this stuff so i dont really know much about it. Thank you

It's not clear from your note what router you are using now.  Are you using a Linksys router?  Which one?  What have you done so far to try to fix the problem with your current router?  Do you still have any hope of getting your current router to work?  Perhaps all you need to fix your current system is a directional antenna, such as a Cantenna.  Directional antennas focus the radio signals where you need them, thereby improving range.  What kind of adapter do you have in your computer -- wireless b, g, or n?
Since I don't know what is causing your current wireless problems, its hard to say if a new router will fix the problem or not.  Its possible that your new home is constructed in such a way that it is difficult for wireless signals to penetrate it.  Some users have reported that they could not get a wireless signal in the next room (less than 20 feet), while others get over 100 feet range with ordinary wireless g.
You asked about a new router, but I'm not sure if you meant the WTR54GS (Wireless g Travel router with Speedbooster), or the WRT54GS (Wireless g with Speedbooster).  If you wanted to replace your router, I would suggest one of the following routers:
WRT54GS  -  This would accept the HGA7T high gain antennas, if you need them.   If the range is still not enough, you could buy a matching speedbooster adapter for your computer.  Maximum speed increase over ordinary wireless g is probably 10 to 35%.
WRT54GL  -  An overall good router.
WRT100  -  Wireless g router with rangebooster.  If you found that your range was insufficient with the router alone, you could buy a matching rangebooster adapter for your computer.  Maximum speed increase over ordinary wireless g is probably 35 to 100%.
WRT300N - Wireless n router.  If you found that your range was insufficient with the router alone, you could buy a matching wireless n adapter for your computer.  Maximum speed increase over ordinary wireless g is probably 100 to 200%.
To get the maximum speed and range with any of the above routers, you must use the matching adapters in your computer.
If you want to try to get your current Linksys router working better, here are a few tips:
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there any way to disable "Speedboost"circuit in WRT54GS?

I have learned that the "Speedboost" circuit in my WRT54GS creates a large amount of RF interference that is affecting my home cordless phones, which are NOT 2.4Ghz phones....they are 1.9 GHz. Is there a way to disable this circuitry or must I buy a router without it?
    Chris

If you want to reduce it ... change the wireless settings on the router ... change the channel from 6 to 9 or 11 ...click save settings
See if the interference is still there ...

  • I have a wireless router (speedbooster) I am trying to co...

I have a wireless router (speedbooster) I am trying to connect a xbox 360 on to the network. The xbox requires the routers WPA number. I cannot find info as to how I find out what the WPA number is (or how to set this number if required) anywhere in instuctions or webpages.
Can any one please help me  obtain this number from the Linksys router.
I have tried to configure the router, although there is no indication in the instructions as to whether this will allow me to obtain a WPA number. I get to the part where I have to type http:/192.168.1.1 in the address bar of my web browser. A box appears that asks for a username and password. According to the Linksys instructions I enter 'admin' in the password box. When I do this The box simply reappears asking me for username and password again.
Can you please help me resolve this problem, I cant find anywhere to email tech support directly.

You may have changed the password when you first set it up. Try your passwords.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

Will a speedbooster router increase network performance even if all my (built-in) client cards are not speedbooster enhanced?

Not really .your inbuilt adapters will still run at a stock 11/54 Mbps .

  • QoS on WRT54GS w/ Speedbooster

I'm using a WRT54GS ver. 6 w/ Speedbooster and the latest firmware, and am experiencing lag when I try to play online XBOX 360 games. Browsing the internet, downloading files, etc. all work fine, and despite the fact that my console is wired directly to the router, I still experience lag. I have no problems with this when it is wired directly to the cable modem.
I'd like to know if I can use the QoS feature to fix this problem. I have already tried, but I didn't know what to set the "upstream bandwidth" to. If anyone has any information on QoS that can help me solve this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
Sorry for the inarticulate post, if you need any clarification just ask.

I have the exact same set-up. I have actually quit playing on-line because the lag is so bad. I have just tried the QoS and will try again. I used to have Verizon DSL. The connection was fine. I never lagged. I recently moved and now have Mediacom Cable. I thought with the cable connection I would be better off. I'm really missing DSL at this point. I recently bought Saints Row. Never played it with the DSL so I just assumed their server was horrible. Let's hope this helps. And is there anyway to boost the cable connection. I bought the Speedbooster under the wrong impression of what it does. It only makes your own network faster, but my network is only my pc and 360.

  • Wrt54gs v.6 speedboost?

  • Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SpeedBooster

Anyone get the Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SpeedBooster WPC54GS to work with their Mac?
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iLife 6

Yes. I have Linksys WPC54GS version 1.1 (with the Broadcom chipset) running OS 10.3.9. I believe version 2.0 also uses the Broadcom chipset, but I do not know if that is the same for version 2.1.
BTW: I originally used a Linksys wireless router but a year ago changed to the Belkin Pre-N Router F5D8230-4.

  • Problems with 3 Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster

I bought 3 Wireless-G  Broadband Routers with speedboost.
They all had problems.  After buying a second one,  I figured the first one had a defect.  Then I had more problems.   Is this just more bad luck? Then I bought the third one, and still had problems, especially with the program it had me install on the pcs I had at home.  It just wouldn't keep a connection.  Then, most of the time I had to restart the router..  Shame, I thought to myself... I wondered if linksys knew about this router and its problems..   I even tried to upgrade the firmware, and it only had problems after that on one of the routers.  I just got a complaint from one of my friends about the router.  I had a feeling I knew what it was once she told me the problem it had.  Then I asked her the type a router it was. "Linksys" she told me and I told her my story with 3 bad routers. . It was weird..
Oh, well, hopefully linksys will look it up and see what is up with the product.  Buying the 3 same routers and them not working was a little weird.  At least it wasn't working the way it should have.
That is all from me..  I know this is a serious post, so reply all that want to.

What you want to do is set up your wireless security.  The routers setup page
(192.168.1.1) can only be accessed IF someone can get on your wireless network first.  Of course, you want to change this password to something other than 'admin' anyway.  This you can do by accessing the administration tab in the setup pages of the router by going here to see how it is done.
Now, you want to secure your wireless network by going here.
