Speeding up iMovie 08 encoding

Hi,
Does anyone know how to speed up the encoding with iMovie 08. I really, really love working in 08 (does what I need it to do), but it takes a while to spit out results on my MacBook. I'd like to avoid going MacBook Pro. So, I was wondering if there was someway to accelerate encoding a movie.
For example, would the elgato h.264 turbo be usable with iMovie08? If not, is there another path you could take, that's cheaper than getting a MBP?
(Please -- if anyone has answers to these specific questions, I'd be much obliged. I'm not looking for information on iMovie06 or why I should move to a MacBook Pro, just on how to speed up encoding with iMovie08 on a Santa Rosa MacBook).
Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. I went to the Apple store and purchased one, since there's no restocking fee. But playing with it last night, it definitely won't do what I want it to do. So, it's going back.
But, your note on upping processor performance has noticeably helped when I'm scrubbing video on my MB. It's more responsive now. Also, the encoding time improved. I had a sample 720p clip I am have testing against. After upping the processor (choosing "performance" over the default "normal") improved the encoding time from 65 to 48 minutes. That's a nice little boost. Thanks.

  • Speeding up H.264 encoding

    Hello,
I'm looking for your current thoughts on speeding up H.264 encoding. I'm currently using FCE HD 3. Last night I made a 560x315, hour-and-twenty-minute web video for a client--it took over 14 hours to encode. Not the end of the world--usually I do 10-minute videos, but still...
I'm running a new G4 ibook (slow, I know) but am considering a MacBook Pro.
    1) Any system settings or RAM issues that might speed things up?
    2) Any thoughts on the open source x264 (just downloaded and will test this weekend)?
    3) It is really possible to distrubte the work amongst multiple computers (I'm using an Airport network with two other (older) Macs. Worth it?
Also, I've read that H.264 encoding is slower on the MacBook Pro as compared to the G5, apparently due to non-optimized code in Quicktime. Any experiences with this or rumors of when/if the software will be made to run faster? Is there a real hardware solution out there?
    Thanks!

  • How does hard drive speed impact iMovie performance

I'm thinking of getting one of the newly released 15" MacBook pro laptops. For hard drive choices I can get 750GB @ 5400 RPM or 500GB @ 7200 RPM (SSD Drives are too expensive for me). How does hard drive speed impact iMovie performance?

Most of my videos are .mov. Currently I'm using a ContourGPS and it saves the files as .mov H264 and iMovie converts it. It think it's uncompressing the file using Apple Intermediate codec, the extension is still .mov after the iMovie conversion.

  • IMovie-iDVD encoding error

    Hi All,
Same story/different plot involving "there was an error during movie encoding". I made an iDVD from iMovie clips and extra .mp3 music clips. This DVD got burned and worked first time around. Then the DVD got a scratch and won't play from a certain point forward.
So when I resurrected the iDVD project, iMovie files, music, etc. it no longer works. Now it just says "there was an error during movie encoding". I'm not missing pieces of the puzzle because when I preview the project in iDVD, all the music, etc. is in place.
I have gone through the discussions over and over and changed things like clicking on and off "encode in background", changed from NTSC to PAL, deleted encoded assets, etc. The only effect these solutions have had is cycling through the movie longer but still eventually popping up the error message.
Unfortunately because I had already made the DVD, I had put it onto my external harddrive, so now I can't find my original iMovie project to re-export it to iDVD (even though the project is obviously somewhere).
Extra details: buring on a double-layer disc, project size 4.56GB, 21GB available on hard drive, using iDVD 7.1.2, Mac OS 10.6.8, 3GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Any advice would be super helpful, it's almost more frustrating to know it worked before, but not anymore.
    Thanks!

So when I resurrected the iDVD project, iMovie files, music, etc.
Did you make any edits to the project before trying to reburn it?  If so that creates a problem with iDVD preventing a successful encode.  It's best to start over with a new project and add the media, i.e. movies, stills, etc., again.
Then follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Will the DVD disk play on your Mac with DVD Player?  Sometimes the Mac is more forgiving than set top DVD players.  If you can try to create a disk image of the DVD disk with Disk Utiltiy.  If you can then play it with DVD Player to make sure it plays thru completely.  If that's successfull then you can burn a new disk with Disk Utility.

  • How to measure the rotational speed by using rotary encoder and 1 counter?

I want to measure the rotational speed of a shaft, and I have below hardware:
    1, a rotary encoder, with A,B,Z signals output;
    2, PCI-E6363 card.
I do konw how to use such a  encoder to measure the rotational angle by using the function "DAQmxCreateCIAngEncoderChan", but this time I need to measure the speed(rpm), as well as the dirction of the speed, which means a negative speed represent a CCW rotate direction.
    More detail informations:
for the encoder, the A,B signal is 600ppr, and Z signal is 1ppr
the rotatinal speed is in range: -300 ~ 5000 rpm.
some one suggested me that I can use the "DAQmxCreateCIAngEncoderChan" task to measure the angle firstly and then do the differential analysis with the angle. but I have to enable the Z index function, and it's hard to calculate when the shaft speed is fast then 2500rpm.
Anyone can help me on this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

    RobertoBozzolo:
Thansk for your reply. You are right that measure frequency to get the speed is the best way, but it's hard to get the dirction at the same time. You suggest me that "perform two angle measurements to get the sense of rotation", but I'm not sure I catched what you mean about this. I try to understand your opinion like this: distribute the signals to 2 counters, and start 2 tasks, one for frequency, the other for angle which used for deciding the dirction?
And by the way, in my application, the counter is limited:
I'm using PCI-E6363, which have 4 counters totally, and I have to measure 4 different speed sensors at the same time, so that means only 1 counter for me to measure the speed and the dirction.
    RobertoBozzolo 已写:
To measure the speed from the encoder you can simply follow some of the frequency measurement examples that ship with DAQmx, considering that speed (rpm) is given by frequency (Hz) on one encoder output / 600 (ppr) * 60 (s->min)  = frequency / 10.
Difficult is to add a sign to this measurement: frequency measurement gives you no information about sense of rotation, so I suppose you could perform two angle measurements to get the sense of rotation and then get the speed as above.

  • Adjusting speed in iMovie 10.0

I have been importing my Gopro 3 video directly into Imovie 9 without problems, once I optimized the video (which I did as part of the importing process) I could adjust the speed of the film, usually for slow motion shots, etc.  Now that I have upgraded to Imovie 10.0 I cannot change the speed of the video at all; the speed editor function is greyed out as are all the choices for slow motion, instant replays, etc.  What changed?  Did Imovie 10.0 cut out the "optimization" step?  If so how do I "prepare" my raw Gopro footage so that I can add in slow motion etc.?  I really don't want to have to import the video, then run it through some other program and then import it again into Imovie, particularly when the previous version of Imovie was able to handle the process seamlessly.

    Thanks Telemakos1,
I have been trying to figure this out since yesterday. I could not find this in the help documentation either and for a moment I thought there was somthing wrong with my video format from the gopro.
I will hope this is just a bug and not a design choice or technical limitation.

  • Speed button iMovie 10.0.5

The slow motion button does work in this updated version. How do I fix this?

I use a much, much older iMovie so I don't know exactly how the new one works, but until somebody else replies...  It may be re-encoding the whole .mp4 since some formats cannot be edited without doing that, and you would need to check something like format and quality settings to prevent it from saving to a much higher quality which won't actually make the quality any better than the original anyway.

  • Speed up Adobe Media Encoder conversion time?

Hello I started a topic that is now answered about After Effect which can't convert h.264 (MP4) without using Adobe's media encoder. That's fine with me I just want to be able to convert the video's I use the software After Effect gives you. But I started this topic over here to ask if their is a way to speed up conversion time using the media encoder. Thanks and sorry if I don't answer all the time I only reply to answers that help not comments about the same topic .

I don't think you can create such a thing for the general populace. There are just too many variables.
You can take a 1 minute segment and export at various settings on your computer to get such a chart, but that will apply only to you with that material.

  • IMovie stops encoding shortly into a project.

    Hello.
I've had this problem for a while now and none of my usual fixes (deleting .plists and repairing disk permissions) have worked.
When I set iMovie HD to encode something (usually to MP4 with Expert settings for a reasonable file size, but this has happened with everything I've tried), it will either seemingly finish encoding or the progress window will disappear part of the way through without any error messages or indications that something is wrong.
When I play back the encoded file the video will suddenly freeze at a random point while the audio carries on. Quicktime Player's currently on version 7.2.0.
When played on VLC Player I get the following error:
main: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap
main: picture 0x2a4be34 refcount is -1
Also, since iMovie HD is nothing but trouble and I haven't found a decent alternative, transitions are rendering in a juddery, jittery fashion which disrupts both sound and video. That and the audio will cut out the end of each clip a second or so before the next one starts. But the problem highlighted above is the main reason for my desk having a forehead-shaped dent in it.
Currently have 104.65 GB left so I'm pretty sure it's not due to lack of disk space.

mm... premiere is 7.0 and media encoder 7.0.1 but the software says up to date. Creative cloud manager said everything is up to date but this morning adobe updater said there was some upgrade to premiere and its currently updating.
At any rate, it may be updating because last night I uninstalled everything and refreshed premiere's settings and was able to export something. When I opened up premiere though, it said that something was missing from the previous project and i just ok'd it. Thinking back to it though, I remember it was something involving mercury so I looked that up and its some sort of playback engine from NVIDIA http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe-cs6.html
I never installed such a thing nor do I know what that could have to do with rendering since its called a playback engine but things seem to be working now. For that matter, I don't see how uninstalling premiere removed an NVIDIA component but w/e. Hope that helps anyone who may run into this problem and hope it doesn't come up again for me.
    Thanks.

  • Change Video Speed in iMovie 08'?

I probably haven't used iMovie since iLife 04' and am now editing a video using iMovie '08. I'd like to to have a portion of the video I'm editing play at a faster speed... kind of like a time lapse video for a small portion of the project. Is there any way I can do that in iMovie 08'? I was able to speed up/slow down and play in reverse parts of a video in the previous version of iMovie. Are those editing methods not available any more?

Is there any way I can do that in iMovie 08'?
    No.
I was able to speed up/slow down and play in reverse parts of a video in the previous version of iMovie.
You still can. iMovie HD download for iLife '08 users.
Are those editing methods not available any more?
Not from within iMovie '08 but you can change speed externally. Here is my favorite method using the free JES Deinterlacer.

  • Capturing video at 3/4 speed in imovie HD.  Can you adjust capture speed?

I shot footage using the JVC HD100 at 24p. Even though FCP now handles it, it keeps aboring the capture. I tried using imovie HD, but it keep capturing at 3/4 speed. The audio plays normal, but the video is sped up. Is there a way I can change the setting in imovie HD to capture at a normal speed. My work around was to conform the video back to 23.98 in cinema tools, but this is too tedious for an entire movie. Can someone help? Is this a glitch in imovie?

iM is a consumer product, 24p is way out of its specs...
iMovie is a consumer video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV/D8 camcorders
so, 25/30fps, and HD via firewire, because HD content gets converted "on the fly" into Apple Intermediate Codec...
Is there a way ... to capture at a normal speed?
    yes, buy some 4GHz-quadcore-überMac.. ;-))

  • Jvc everio playback twice the speed with imovie 11

playback in imovie 11 from jvc everio hard disk camcorder plays twice the speed!
Any help would be much appreciated!

try to connect the camera to Mac and use Import from Camera option to import AVCHD files to iMovie. 1080i and 1080 24/25p are able to work well with iMoive.
however, if AVCHD mts footages are 1080 50/60p, then a converter is needed. iMovie doesn't accpet 50/60p avchd files. It will prompt that it is not supported media. See this guide about how to import avchd files to iMoive.

  • Viewing Speed in Imovie 9

I am trying to figure out how to make the video playback speed like 2x, 5x, and so forth. You use to be able to view the video that you are working with at a high speed which cut down editing time. Does anyone know what the keyboard strokes are for changing the playback speed within a project for 09? Or did they do away with this because of the scroll feature?

OK, found it... probably too late for your project, but here it is anyway for posterity's sake:
If you would like to change the playback speed you must:
    1. Add your clip to a project. You cannot change the clip speed until its in a project
    2. After that, open the clip inspector (Window > Clip Adjustment). The speed slider is about half way down the Inspector window between the turtle and rabbit icons.
Here is a screenshot for reference: http://grab.by/1ZOL
    Hope that works for you!
