"speeding up" opening dialogs etc.

When I open many dialogs such as the print dialog in any application it 'rolls' down the window rather than just appearing straight away. Same with opening something like quick look.
OK, this looks great, and as I'm on a Mac Pro then there isn't a problem with it slowing down the Mac.
However, in some applications I have to bring up a lot of dialogs with short cut keys and I'd like the dialogs to just appear rather than roll down - is there any setting which means dialog boxes just appear without rolling down?
I'm on the latest lepoard.

You might want to try getting this application: http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/

  • Open Sharepoint File Launches application to Open Dialog

    We are experiencing the following behavior on one machine in our group. The environment is SharePoint Online 2013, with libraries synchronized to the user PC. User PC is Windows 8.1 with Office 2013.
    When you double-click a SharePoint file to open it, it launches the appropriate Office program, but it launches to the "Open" dialog (open local file, use a template, etc.)
    If you close the program (Word, Excel, Visio, etc.) and double-click the file again to open it, it typically opens properly. On some occasions, it behaves as described above again.
    Once the file is successfully opened, it opens properly from there forward.
    When the file is actually opening, the splash screen indicates it is "downloading" the file, and there is a delay. The file is actually synchronized and has a local copy.
    If you open a true local copy of any MS file format (not in a synchronized folder), the files open properly.
    I suspect this is an issue with the office document cache or something, but I find no fix for this behavior.

  • Resize windows and manage files in save/open dialogs?

    1. How to resize windows by dragging any border or corner?
    2. How to manage files via a Save/SaveAs or Open dialog (rename, delete, copy other files, etc...)?
    My search on these two things only comes up with comparisons and debates about Win vs Mac. Not relevant to the questions! I already run Win XP in Fusion when I have to for work. I don't want to run Windows; I just want to eliminate a couple Mac shortcomings since Apple hasn't. Yet. Maybe it has to do with patents...
    Anyway, does anybody know of a utility or other way to enable these functions in Mac OS 10? (I've tried Pathfinder; it doesn't quite do the trick.)

    I believe you will find a couple of third-party utilities that provide some enhancements for windows. As for file dialogs I can only recommend Default Folder X. You will find these at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Photoshop crashes with open dialog box on Windows 8.1

    I just upgraded from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. I have Photoshop CC, I also have Photoshop Elements installed. On occasion, Photoshop CC hangs when using the open dialog box. It then crashes explorer. The only way to resolve it is to restart the PC.
    Has anyone seen this behavior. I do not have any logs as of now.
    Thanks,
    Bill Byrnes

    I don't know if this is helpful or exactly on topic with this thread... but I have to share somewhere...
    I've been dealing this problem for months and I finally fixed it on my own.
    My Antivirus, AVG, which is great, except for this glitch, was the root cause of the issue.
    History:  If I right-clicked a file in my Save/Open Dialogue Photoshop (CS6 Extended) would crash.. for the last few months, actually...  If I avoided right-clicking I'm ok, but my instincts are to organize, rename, etc. while in the save/open pop-up window ... So I've often crashed Photoshop when all I do is right-click on a file in the list of files...
    Well, I figured out the cause of the glitch:
    "Permanently Shred with AVG” .. this option, added without my knowledge during an AVG update, was added around the same time this problem started (realizing this in hindsight).. THIS was conflicting with my Adobe Photoshop file explorer window in the Save/Open dialogue!!! After months of trying to figure this out, this is definitely the solution.
    Once I turned that AVG Shell Extenstion off.... I am now able to right-click files in Photoshop save/open pop-up window again without it crashing…  finally !!!!
    ...hope this helps folks even if it's just a related clue to other issues....
    Basically ,run command prompt as Administrator, then type:
    For 32-bit :  regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG2014\avgse.dll”
    For 64-bit:   regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG2014\avgse.dll”
    I found this info about turning off  "Permanently Shred with AVG" option at this link:

    hi,
    I have a question about opening dialog.
    I have a main frame window in application, and it opens some dialog windows.
    the problem is, I can pass the frame model to child dialog when I first opening it. however, child dialog cannot pass itself as frame model to second dialog.
    e.g Frame -> dialog 1-> dialog2 -> dialog3
    so I use the follwing from dialog 1 to dialog2 , etc..
    ManagerDLG dlg = new ManagerDLG(null, "Manager", true);its works fine if I don't minimize the applcation, but when I click the application icon from task bar, it show up dialog1 only even I'm using dialog3 in top level... , how can I solve this problem?

  • Slow navigation in the Open dialog

    Here at work, we've just updated all of our Macs to OS X 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion), the latest version as of this writing, from Snow Leopard.  This has brought about a very unwanted change in Illustrator CS6's behavior.
    Previously, whenever opening a file in Illustrator, navigating through a folder with hundreds of files by typing the first few letters of the file name we're after, it would take us quickly to that file.  If it was slow to do so, then it was because the dialog was trying to generate a thumbnail preview of each file that we were hitting along the way.  No big deal, since we could easily hit the down-arrow next to "Preview" so that the dialog would not try to generate a preview image for each file that was selected.
    Now, however, the preview window takes up the rest of the Open dialog and it cannot be closed.  For example, as we type the filename "test.ai" in a folder with hundreds of files in it, the selection would stop at the first file with the letter "t" as the first letter, take about five seconds to generate a preview of that file, then move on to the next file, which is the fist one that begins with "te"—stopping at it to generate a preview, of course—then on to "tes", etc.  This means that it can take upwards of a good 15–20 seconds for the dialog to finally reach the file we need before we can finally hit <return> on it to open it up.  Please note that this behavior is not present in InDesign CS6, however.
    Is there any way to turn off this "previewing" of files that are highlighted in Illustrator CS6's Open dialog on Mountain Lion?
    UPDATE:  We have tried using each of the four different view options at the top of the Open dialog—Thumbnail, Details, List, etc.—with the same result.  Even in the Detail view, which doesn't have a Preview pane, still takes several seconds to move from one file to the next as you're typing out the target filename.  Any thoughts on what is causing this, then?

    Hi,
    Is there any error message when you try to map network Drive manually? It would be better to provide more details about error message.
    Generally speaking, this problem can be caused by Network Connection problem, please make sure your Client PC could access to Network Drive PC.
    In addition, please check Network Drive PC security setting, if there is any firewall policy prevent this operation.
    If still no use, please check Event Viewer if it identify this problem.

    There is no error.  There is no connectivity problem.  THe drives map automatically and always have.  I can open up File Explorer and browse these drives all I want.  I can open up Word and browse to these drives just fine.
    However, when I open certain programs, and click File | Open, the mapped network drives just simply aren't there.  I only see C and D and that's it.

  • My Mac will not open any 'save' or 'open' dialog boxes

    My mac will not open any 'save' or 'open' dialog boxes, this includes saving in photoshop and uploading photos to Facebook. The dialog boxes do not appear - please help?

    Since you're running Lion, just try a new system install - it won't affect your data or apps, but you should, anyway, have a backup regardless.
    Boot to your Recovery partition by holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting. At the Recovery window, first repair permissions again, then verify and, if necessary, repair your hard drive. Then quite Disk Utility and elect to reinstall the OS anew - it will only overwrite system files and the like, not touching your data, apps, etc. It may take awhile to complete.
    After completion, reboot and see if the problem still exists. If it does, I'm just at a loss...

  • Open dialog "support" part do not show iTunes/iPhoto

    Hello.
    Impossible to find this anywhere on internet
    I reinstalled Lion on my computer, then I reimported from TimeMachine (within the installation) only a small part of my user folder. Mostly all preferences and settings, but not the datas because it was too long.
    Later then, I entered in TimeMachine and restored all the folders contents, Pictures, Movies, etc... (not the folders themselves but the content of each, one folder at a time).
    Now, inside the Open dialog of applications, inside Images I have PhotoBooth, but no iPhoto, and in Music nothing (missing iTunes), and in Movies, only photobooth too.
    I think it's because I did not restored that at the beginning but now it should fint them, they works fine !
    I tried to create new libraries of iPhoto and iTunes but it's the same
    Any ideas ?
    (10.7.3)

    Kim,
    This may or may not be relevant but when I log into my icloud account online to check the account there is no icon showing for the Photo Stream.
    That should not matter - I do not see my PhotoStream in iCloud either, but it is working fine.
    Some things to check:
    Does your iPhone actually send the photos to the Photo Stream? It will only push the photos to the stream, if it is connected to a WiFi and if it is charged.
    Your Mac will download only the newest photos from iCloud. If your iPhone pushed the last photo to iCloud a month ago, you will not see any photos in Photo Stream.
    Can a firewall be blocking your PhotoStream? If you are using LittleSnitch, it might be blocking the PhotoStreamagent.
    You can check, if actually photos have been downloaded from the PhotoStream to your mac, by looking into your User Library:
         ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/
    The folder above will hold all photos currently downloaded from the PhotoStreams. To browse it, select the line above, ctrl-click it, and select Services > Reveal from the pop-up menu.
    If you are sure, that your iPhone is sending photos to the stream, but they do not appear on your mac, clear the caches of the PhotoStream agent: Trash the the contents of this folder:
         ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.photostream-agent/
    Then reboot.

  • Opening file also opens "File Open" dialog

    I have recently noticed a changed behaviour in my Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Every time I double click a file to open it (Excel Spreadsheet, PDF File, etc.) the application gets launched and opens the file. But it also shows the File Open dialog (Excel, Preview, etc...). This is quite annoying because Excel for example opens a blank spreadsheet when I click Cancel on the File Open dialog. Preview at least does nothing. But I still have to dismiss the extra dialog.
    Any idea how to fix this?

    Try to uncheck the Documents/Data check box in iCloud settings, in the perferences dialog.

  • Open Dialog double-clicking problems.

    Here's a head-scratcher...
    Recently in almost any Open Dialog box, when I double-click a folder on my server it will turn the arrow down and list the contents rather than opening that directory. Then when I save, it doesn't save it in the intended directory. Strange. I can't seem to figure out why.
    The real strange part is that it happens in all my non-Apple applications only (e.g. illustrator, bbedit, Word), but Apple apps behave normally (e.g. Preview, Safari). Also, it ONLY occurs when I try to access folders on my server (Linux using Clark Connect) where my HD and external HD behave perfectly fine.
    The other strange thing is I've tried this on another mac on the network and my PowerBook, but, surprise, it all works fine on those machines -- so it's just my G5. I tried trashing finder pref but no joy.
    I can work around this by doing a lot of command-downarrow's in those dialog boxes, but I'd prefer to have it the way it was
    Can anyone shed some light on this strange phenomenon? I can't find any threads anywhere that has this same problem. Thanks in advance.
    G5 Tower Dual 2.5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Huh.
    I've recently started having the same mysterious annoyance. Except the afflicted folders are on an external (firewire) drive, not a server...
    Similarly, it's not occurring with Apple apps, as far as I know.
    What's perhaps oddest of all, some folders on this volume are functioning normally, while others aren't.
    I had been using Default Folder X, but this happens even when that's disabled, erased, freshly installed, etc. In certain apps, clicking on the current folder name in the open/save dialog initiates a crash (seems related to the interface itself).
    I've repaired the disk, permissions, trashed all related preferences, etc. Everything checked out okay.
    One final clue, perhaps related or not: I've been finding duplicated folder names nested in the 'Volumes' path subordinate to my primary disk. These are probably supposed to be hidden. But I haven't deleted or otherwise tinkered with them. They do not contain the identical items of the 'real' volume (much fewer folders, documents, etc.) but there they are, acting somewhat like imposters.
    Like ookla says, a head-scratcher. I'm gonna upgrade to latest flava of OS and see if it helps; I'll let y'all know.
    Good luck!

  • Open dialog defaults to local hard disk and eventually crashes

    Hello everyone. I am working with a client who is running PowerMac G5, Tiger 10.4.8. Here is the issue:
    Every time he opens a file in any app (Adobe CS2, Macromedia suite, MS Office, etc) he has to navigate to the file server. In other words, none of the applications remember the last open path, it will default back to Computer > Volumes > SERVERNAME. The same thing doesn't happen if he drills down into a folder on his local hard disk. For example, if he were to open a Word document from /Users/MarkS/Documents/Folder1, close Word, and go to Open (File > Open, Command+O, etc) it goes back to /Users/MarkS/Documents/Folder1.
    The other issue is if he tries to navigate back using the recently accessed folders (the dropdown menu in the Open Dialog sheet) then the application crashes (again, this is with any app).
    He is connecting to the fileserver via AFP (Windows Server 2003 with ExtremeZ-IP 5), gigabit (on a dedicated switch to his department), and according to him, this issue began some time ago.
    The only thing I've tried was to remove his Finder preference file, logged out, logged in, and after recreateding the Finder preference file he had the same results. Just to be sure it wasn't just his account on this PowerMac, I logged in with a different domain account and the same issues came up (i.e. with another user account on that same G5). So it makes me wonder if its a system wide issue.
    Any thoughts?
    MacBook Pro 1.83, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard disk, Super Drive (nothing special!)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Turned out to be a simple fix. There were old names in the /Volumes directory, which simply had to be unmounted. If they were not unmounted, the GUI would recognize the Apple share, but the underlying system would create a new directory with a "-1" appended to the end, thus confusing the OS and causing the applications to crash.

  • Have an Open Dialog in C++ project

    Hello! So I'm going to need a Open Dialog in my C++ project, where you can select a file and it gets the URL (/Users/Name/Applications... etc..). I've seen a lot of posts on many different sites, saying that you use NSOpenPanel in Cacao, but I haven't been able to get it to work. I tried it in a Objective-C project and Swift project, but it just doesn't work. Is there anyone who can help me have an Open Dialog in my C++ project? I'm thinking maybe i need to mix C++ and Objective-C or Swift, but I'm not sure how. Thanks!

    Okay. But I'm still having some problems. If the openPanel.mm looks like this:
    #import "openPanel.h"
    @implementation openPanel
    @end
    - (IBAction)viewDialog:(id)sender {
        NSArray *URLs;
        NSOpenPanel * panel = [NSOpenPanel openPanel];
        [panel setAllowsMultipleSelection:NO];
        [panel setResolvesAliases:YES];
        [panel setTreatsFilePackagesAsDirectories:YES];
        [panel setMessage:@"Please choose an image file."];
        [panel runModal];
        URLs = [panel URLs];
        NSLog(@"%@",URLs);
    I'm getting "Missing context for method declaration" on the IBAction line. The openPanel.h looks like this
    #ifndef CustomLoL_openPanel_h
    #define CustomLoL_openPanel_h
    #import <Foundation/Foundation.h>
    @interface openPanel : NSObject{
    @end
    #endif
    Now again, I don't know Objective-C so i don't know how it's supposed to look like. But I'm guessing it should look like this in the .h:
    @interface openPanel : NSObject{
    - (IBAction)viewDialog:(id)sender;
    @end
    If the last thing i said is true, shouldn't the whole
    - (IBAction)viewDialog:(id)sender {
        NSArray *URLs;
        NSOpenPanel * panel = [NSOpenPanel openPanel];
        [panel setAllowsMultipleSelection:NO];
        [panel setResolvesAliases:YES];
        [panel setTreatsFilePackagesAsDirectories:YES];
        [panel setMessage:@"Please choose an image file."];
        [panel runModal];
        URLs = [panel URLs];
        NSLog(@"%@",URLs);
    be inside of
    @implementation openPanel
    @end
    in the .mm?
    But if i put the method in there, i get these errors: http://gyazo.com/0d7432afe4d7916aa3fdf076479ae872

  • Illustrator cc2014 open dialog box won't work yosemite

    I have a Macbook Pro Retina 2014 with a fresh install of Yosemite and Creative Cloud, after a while, when I used the open dialog box for 4 or 5 times to open documents, that dialog box won't work anymore, I have to quit and reopen the Illustrator application, the shortcut won't work either. Is anybody got that problem before?
    When I was on Mountain Lion, I never got this problem, I presume it's related to Yosemite.

    Gelouis,
    I believe it is a bug in CC2014, appearing when you have the Illustrator open/place dialogue set to column view and sort by date or sort by kind. You may change it to view by name or list view.

    Or you may get it right by changing the sort to something else.
