Speeding up the 3g under IOS4

When my 3g bogs down, I've found that opening then force quitting Mail improves performance considerably, and increases the amount of free ram from around 5mb to almost 20mb.
To force quit an application, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the power off slider appears, then release the Sleep/Wake button and press the Home button until the application quits.
Notes: (1) still running IOS 4.0; (2) quitting Safari in the same manner may also help.

Your other solution is to get a simultaneous dual band router and force the ATV or ATV2 to the 5ghz band and only allow that band to accept N connections. Everything else can share the 2.4ghz band and not slow down your fast stuff on the 5ghz band. Airport Extreme works great for this but there is also simultaneous dual band units from Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, etc. Your mileage may vary and 5ghz is shorter range than 2.4ghz (but faster) and is working perfectly for me. Cheers!
P.S. I should clarify that I had a Netgear WNDR3700 dual band that was giving me trouble with my Apple stuff and my Asus netbook... recently replaced with an Airport Extreme and no issues now. Nada. Not saying it will work for everybody but of over a half dozen wireless routers I've owned over the years, this one just works and it's a keeper.

  • Is it possible to speed up the network between a host and a guest-vm?

I need to copy some template PVM files about 1GB-4GB size from my hosts into a guest VM under Oracle VM. I did a scp -p <sourcefile> [email protected]:/  (Destination of the guest-vm IP).
The copying took about 2.0Mb/s. It took 8mins+ for a 1GB file. I checked on my adapter. There's eth0 and bond0. I am using adapter1: bridge and adapter2: host-adapter. I noticed the copy is using the host adapter "bond0" which is much slower. Is there anyway to speed up the copy?

    Hi Budachst,
I just recalled. I downloaded some Oracle media installer. These are zip files. I would like to get them installed into a guest-vm. These installer are currently residing in the Host OS. I need to copy them into the guest-vm.
My current OVM Server sits on top of Virtualbox in laptopA. In Laptop B, I have Virtualbox running and installed OVM Manager. OVM Mgr is able to discover OVM server and managed to get a guest-vm created as well. Two HOST computers are connected via bridge.
OVM Server is currently configured with bond0 and eth0. Yes, bond0 should be fast. I am getting 3Mbps while copying from Host OS in laptop A to guest-vm.

How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking,  and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple)  under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful.

  • I have a dual 1.8 ghz pwer pc g5 and sometimes i put it in sleep mode and come home on my lunch break and the fan is running at full speed and the computer has frozen up...what is going on here?

and sometimes i put it in sleep mode and come home on my lunch break and the fan is running at full speed and the computer has frozen up...what is going on here? is it a virus or has my computer been hijacked? it cant be good for the computer...anyone ever had this problem..?

Your problem has been reported many times, but causes are as varied as individuals.
Can we assume that a hard shutdown allows a normal restart?
Can I assume that you have used Disk Utility from your OS X install disc to repair the hard drive directory? The freezes and hard shutdowns require that the drive be repaired (not permissions) or soon the machine won't boot at all.
If the root issue is software related, in Console (the application) under Logs, there should be loggings around the time of sleep and logs that tell you what process went wild and froze the machine.
Network activity is also a common casue.
    Other info:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776
If hardware related, such as an external drive, other USB device (Wacom tablet) or USB PCI card, ejecting, disconnecting, removing, or in the case of the Wacom, updating drivers, are all potential remedies.

  • How can I give more speed to the Imac working with yosemite

    Hello!
I just upgraded my software to yosemite and everything works fine except that the system has become much slower in general. as you can give more speed work to Imac in Yosemite?
    Thnks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mac mini Intel Core Duo fan very loud and runs at high speed all the time.

I purchased an "Open box" Mac mini Intel Core Duo, 1.66Ghz, 2G ram, 80G HD and SD a few days ago from Fry's.
It runs beautifully except the fan is very loud compared to any Mac my family has ever had. It is so loud that we were thinking of putting it under the desk.
The fan runs constantly, and I mean all the time, at a high speed. You can really feel the air coming out the exhaust vents. The case is always cool to the touch as is the exhaust air.
My aunt bought a similar Mac mini (But only 512Mb ram) the same day. Her's is very quiet. The case feels just slightly warm, not unlike other Mac mini's I've seen.
Should my Mac mini's fan be running this way?
    Thanks,
    llulua
BTW: The "open box" was sealed with a Fry's label and it said that this had a new warranty. Yet, checking the serial number, it said that it had about 260 days left. I guess Fry's is backing it?
Also, someone told me that perhaps the main wire from the fan to the logic board is disconnected.

Since you have 2 gigs of memory, my thoughts are that when the party (Fry's or the origianl purchaser) upgraded the memory, they neglected to reattach the wire at the front of the Mini under the IR receptor at the right front corner that regulates the fan speed. This wire must be unattached in order to upgrade the memory, and is probably why the original person brought it back, because of the fan noise resulting from failing to reattach the wire. If that wire is left unattached, the fan runs continually at high speed to protect the CPU and system in general. If you do not want to use a putty knife to open the Mini, take it back to Fry's and ask someone who is Mac savvy to open it and reattach the small plastic receptacle at the end of the wire into its socket at the right front of the machine. When I go to Fry's, I am always concerned because the employees allow people to pry keys off of the Apple notebooks, so don't expect that their employees to know or care about anything Mac.

  • Measuring the area under a torque waveform produced by a rotating shaft.

I am measuring a torque waveform that a shaft produces as it spins up to speed. I am using the waveform vi's in Labview to calculate the total time of the waveform. Is there an easy way to calculate the area under the waveform? The hope is that we wil be able to figure out the amount of work done.

Here is a VI that should do the trick. It is a basic integral of your waveform.

  • Speed of the FW 800 HD

    Hi !
How big is the difference between external HD (FW800) if RPM is 5400 or 7200.
If the machine is PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz, does it make any difference if the RPM of the HD is 5400 or 7200?
If it is portable HD which takes the power for the device from the firewire port, does it make difference if RPM is lower or higher?

    <syriana voice> It's complicated</syriana voice>
From a practical standpoint, how a drive will work for you depends on the codec of the material you are editing and the number of streams you need to run simultaneously.
For example, DV runs at ~3.6MB/s, an absurdly low data rate. I used to capture DV material on my old Powerbook G4's internal 5400rpm drive when I had a Canon camera that wouldn't work with any other device on the same bus. I could go ahead and do a simple cuts only 1 stream edit with just the system drive. If I hooked up my 5400 rpm G-tech fw 400 mini, I could run a couple of streams while editing on the go. All very neat and no 7200 rpm drives in sight.
There are really five things you need to weigh when purchasing drives -
    A. the connection protocol. A drive connected through FW400 will have a considerably lower throughput than the same drive connected through the system bus. If you are looking for the best bang for the buck, internal drives are the best way to go. In descending order of connection speed, I rank connection speed this way: Internal, esata, fw800, fw400. Note, I don't include usb2 as a viable protocol as they are not isochronous - that is they can not control the bus and send an uninterrupted data stream.
    B. the drive cache. Drives with larger caches can load data in such a way that the pipeline never goes empty. This sometimes is more meaningful when you read/write lots of smaller files.
    C. the rotational speed. The faster the disk rotation, the more rapidly the sectors come back under the read head. This doesn't necessarily translate into more throughput unless the drive sector system and read heads have been optimized for each other.
    D. data distribution optimization. Most drives slow as they fill. External drives that are designed for A/V work slow less dramatically than drives designed as general backup devices.
    E. RAID devices. Given you are distributing the Read/Write efforts over 2 or more drives, the speed of the individual drive becomes somewhat less important.
    Have fun.

If the icon exists on your screen, just do a long press on that icon and when the small X appears on top of the app, press it and it will delete it.  As long as this is not an Apple app, since those cannot be deleted.

  • Speed on the Airport Extreme

Hi I have a Macbook running Leopard. Everything runs well. Ever since I bought the Airport extreme WIFI N router my connection speed to the connected external hard drive is rather slow.....
    Here is what i do....
I have a 250gig Mybook connected to the Airport extreme. On the airport utility settings, if I set it to only N wifi the speed is very slow. So i have to keep it on the multiple settings (b/g/n). According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
is there a fix for this?

Leopard Ron, Welcome to the discussion area!
According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
I'm confused by your question. Your first statement says that it is faster (300 Mbps) in 802.11n only. Your question seems to indicate the opposite.

  • How to speed up the performance in Oracle APEX - Classical Report loading

    Hi,
    I am using APEX 4.2, DB 11.2.
I have created 2 reports in the page and the time that is taken to load this page is very huge.
To speed up the performance materialized views were used on queries, but still the performance is the same.
checked the app in DEBUG mode, the following event takes a lot of time to execute:
0.08415 4.76698 rows loop: 15 row(s) the query onky takes very less time to execute
    0.08184 0.00181

Check query performance very carefully. If you execute the SQL more than once in a short amount of time the data will be in memory and accessed more quickly. It is possible that your fast response time was against cached data and therefore faster. If this is the case further tuning the SQL (the MV query) may help.
It is also possible the slowness is due to other factors - network, firewall, antivirus software, etc. I am running Apex on my laptop using the embedded pl/sql gateway and due to antivirus and security software it can take pages 30 seconds or more to load.
