Speeds slowed down to below estimated level

Had Bt infinty installed before christmas 2011. Acheived the max of 38mbps and was happy
Now however, My speeds have dropped to around 20mbps, confirmed by both speedtest.net and http://speedtester.bt.com/
I have found the very un-helpful call centre who suggested I try the usual restart router/home hub which I had already done. The http://speedtester.bt.com/ showed I had an IP profile of 26mbps there abouts, this is still below the 28mbps I was estimated when signing up. Any suggestions what I should do next? I was referred onto here by a friend
Tested on 2 wired computers to rule out wireless

Can you run a test at www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk with your computer connected via Ethernet, not wirelessly?
I've found that site to be the most consistent.
If you're still getting poor speeds and problems, contact the mods on here and see if you can get an engineer out to take a look at the line.

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.

  • Speed slowing down

They said I should get 54/14 and when first installed got 42/9 so I thought OK not a problem I expected it to be less well now every time it decides to reboot its self my speed slows down I'm now on 28/8 and according to there speed test I have I line profile of 31.34 I am not happy does any1 think it will be possible to tell them to stick there infinity where the sun don't shine and get out of the contract as I can only see it getting slower

The problem is with your router, your internet service provider or you have a marginal connection with your router.

  • DSL speed slow down after 10.5 upgrade :(

    Hello all,
I have a question, and need the Apple cyber-community to help me with this one.
I have A.T.& T.'s DSL service. I have a 2WIRE 1701HG router-DSL modem. I HAD 1.2mg download speed 99% of the time with MacOS 10.4.x. Yes I know that it is not very fast, but I live in the country side and am at the VERY VERY end of the line of service.
After I upgraded to MacOS 10.5.x, my down load speeds have slowed down to around 200 to 850bps. I have checked my hardware, and all seems fine. I called A.T.&.T and they ran a speed check and said I was getting 1.5 speed. Any ideas how to fix the issue?
    Thanks,
    Apple //GS

PS: "Get a Windows Vista computer!!" That was what I got from the tech at A.T.&T. "They don't have this problem....................."

  • Dropping Wireless Connection & Speed Slowing Down

    Hi,
Up until a week ago I had two BT lines, I will call them line 1 and line 2.  Line 1 (front room) was used purely for phone calls, and line 2 (middle room) had Broadband activated on it. When it came time to renew the yearly line rental I checked and had it confirmed by BT that the available Broadband speed was faster on line 1, so I decided to cancel line 2, and move my Home Hub 4 into room 1 having arranged to activate Broadband on what in theory should be a line that gives a better speed.
My current problem is two-fold. Firstly I am not yet getting the line speed that I was expecting. I have spoken to the Technical Help Line, and understand that following the activation of Broadband on the line in Room 1 I should wait 10 days for the available speed to stabalise. Currently I am 7 days on from line activation.
A few days ago I was getting download speeds around 2.70 Mbps, with upload speeds around 0.38 Mbps. The IP profile for the download speed at that time was set at 2.77 Mbps. The IP profile for the upload speed was set at 0.45 Mbps. Over the past week I have done numerous speed checks and found that the speed did vary, as might be expected, but was generally always around these figures. Because of the line check speeds I was given by BT's own staff I was expecting the available speed to get better, not slow down! I was originally advised to expect line speeds of between 3.5 Mbps - 5.5 Mbps.
Over the last 24 - 36 hours the speed has slowed down, and a few minutes ago these are the figures I observed:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1.3 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.8 Mbps-2 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 1.33 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.34Mbps
    Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps
Line speed then is one issue, but there is another.
My second, presently very frustrating problem is that even though the Hub 4 is consistently powered, and maintains a steady Blue light showing that Broadband is available, my wireless connection that I receive from the Hub keeps dropping. I should add that the distance from the Hub 4 in Room 1 to where I work with my laptop in Room 2 is only about 15 - 20 feet. I used the old Hub 2 until a few weeks ago, and neither my daughter on her laptop, or myself, had any problems with 'dropping' the wireless signal, whichever room we were in, or even if we used our respective laptops elsewhere in the house. I was convinced enough by the publicity 'blurb' to believe that Hub 4 was more reliable, with fewer drop-outs. So far this has not proven to be the case.
I know that I need to wait a few days more till the 10 days are up, but would really appreciate some kind soul commenting on the above. I have looked at the Logs, but without knowing what segment would be helpful in aiding a diagnosis of my two issues I didn't want to provide unnecessary information. So if any particular element of the Logs would be useful, please let me know.
    Yours in hope,
    Alan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello again,
With your help I was able to locate the place to change the channel manually, which I did, thanks for that. It only resulted in a marginal improvement, but any improvement is good I guess.
HH4 has now been showing a steady connection for three + days, so, as requested, here are the noise stats:
    16:14:16, 26 Nov.    ( 76.170000) DSL noise margin: 22.00 dB upstream, 12.20 dB downstream
    16:14:16, 26 Nov.    ( 76.080000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 3104 Kbps downstream
I have done several speed tests and they all show broadly similar results, namely that my download speed is usually around 2.67, whereas my IP Profile is set at 2.74.
I don't know whether this is worth mentioning but I only have an old style BT socket on my line, not one that has a test socket inside, so I can't do any of the tests using that facility.
Although my broadband connection has been stable and active on the HH4, as far as using wireless to connect my laptop in another room I do still get several dropped connections each day.
Even when I am connected to my HH4 by wireless, and my signal, as now, is only in the four bar bracket, by looking at the other Networks that are active in my street/area I can see, although it is rightly secured, that someone is using a HH3 and the signal on that is powerful enough to register a full five bar (excellent) strength on my laptop. How near or far away from me that user with a HH3 is I do not know, the point is however I can receive a more powerful and consistent signal from their Hub than my own. I must confess to being puzzled by that. What could be the reason?
Is there any further help or guidance that you can give that might assist in raising my IP profile, in the hope that my speed might increase? Or do you have any further suggestions as to how I might reduce the noise on my line to a more acceptable amount, so that my signal might give me a better wireless connection?
Thanks again for any advice or help you are able to give.
    Regards,
    Alan

  • Time-Capsule Network Speed slows down

The TC will work fine for about a week and then inexplicably begins to communicate at a very slow rate over the wireless network. If I cycle power on the TC,, it will resume normal performance for about a week, and then slow down again.
I've taken to monitoring the TC wireless speed using the airport utility. My airport devices will operate normally at about 54 Mbps and my PC clients at about 113 Mbps (I have Netgear N cards in the PCs that operate at about 108 Mbps). When the performance drops, my Mac devices will drop to around 5Mbps and the PCs will drop to 54 Mbps. Performance will continue to degrade until everything is running at 1 to 5 Mbps. I reboot the TC and everything returns to normal for another week.
Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Hi and welcome to the forums.
I'm not a wireless expert, but after having wireless networks at home for more than 5 years with Apple stuffI made some observations.
First, there might be issues with other networks in your neighbourhood. Many posts suggest that there should be at least 5 channels between wireless networks, e.g. 1 - 6 - 11. Set it with AirPort Utility.
Second, something called "noise" from other electronic equipment as microwave ovens and machinery.
Thirdly, having different types of equipment's and networks and speeds mixed together might not make the best network. We have the Time Machine set as working in the 5Ghz area with only the "n" protocol, while another device from the Internet Service Provider broadcasts in the slower bandwidth. In this way the slower wireless computers are running on their own net.
Fourthly, reception of the wireless network can be an issue. One older PC has been provided with an extra antenna, and that helped a lot with an nearly 100% increase in speed for that machine.

  • Connection speed slowing down/degrading

I have been on BT infinity for a 6 monthss now - I had alot of trouble with the home hub but relaced it with an ASUS DSL-AC68U which is great (latest firmware installed).  However over the past month or so I have noticed by connection speeeds slowing - both up and down speeds.  I was getting around 70000kbps down and 20000kbps up but this has dropped to 52/12 ish.
The router auto diagnostics is also reporting an unstable DSL connection.
it seems there is a connection problem or something has changed at the exchange...?

your connection time is only 12 hrs was that a manual reset or router dropping conenction
can you try quiet line test  dial 17070 option 2  should be quiet and best done with corded phone

  • BT Infinity speeds slowing down

I am currently a customer of your BT infinity Option 2 package, originally when signing to the package BT estimated at an almost maximum speed of 35/40Mb download, which I received the estimate accurately, after having the package installed. After a month my speeds dropped a fair amount, to which we now only recieve sync speeds of between 17 - 23Mb download. BT have recently made the up to cap of 76Mb download, and using the estimate tool on BT's website, say we can recieve 73Mb down but haven't seen any gain.
Obvious checks have been made; are cables correctly connected, minimised any potential interferences (wireless phones, microwaves, etc.), restart devices outside of peak hours, Reset the device settings...
I am using the Infinity VDSL Modem that came, however I am not using the BT Homehub, but a WAG320N which I know isn't the problem due to plugging in the Homehub for a couple of days to see if there is an improvement, which proved unsuccessful.
Any ideas on what I can do? the BT tech team are are currently in the process of sending me a new Homehub to apprently fix the issue, they told me the old hub must be broken

    72.1Mb download
    20.0Mb upload

    Hello David,
Yes I recieved the Hub Thursday and set it up that night, initial start up the download speed jumped up to 36Mb which was nice to have again, however did not last, since then, just like before it is slowly dropping again and as of today (Sunday) I have a download speed of 27Mb, decreasing day by day
I am certain I'm not doing anything wrong (being an IT Technician). I have, just incase, had a friend and colleague over to double check my settings, cabling and see if there are any obvious causes. We moved the items around abit, discontected the wireless phones in the house etc. but gave no considerable improvement to the 27Mb download.
BT told me they would phone me Saturday (Yesturday) to check if the issue is solved or if it still needs trouble shooting, however I didn't recieve a call back :/
Any advice or ideas on what to do?
    Kind regards
    Tom

  • Browsing speeds slowing down with my AE.  Is it Leopard or the AE? Opinions

I noticed after the 10.5.4 update that my browsing began to slow when connected to the AE. I've tried various browsers and they all began to function the same way--slow.
I thought maybe it had something to do with my AE so I connected my cable modem directly to my iMac and behold, I was browsing the net at lightning speeds again.
I've had my AE for a few months (it's not the new AE with "N" speeds), I'm wondering if it's the AE or Leopard. Also, I'm wondering if I can return it to the Apple store and get a new one?
My mac indicated that my AE signal is at full strength and the light is green on my AE, but the browsing can get slow.
Opinions? Should I try to return the AE to the store? What will hitting the reset accomplish?

Just for starters, did you save your network preferences to remember all Airport/wireless networks and have you stored the passwords in your keychain so they automatically connect?
You can even choose which network to join first and in which order. Such as your home network first, then school, then public wi-fi. Put them in the order of which you're at most. Then Airport will automatically find the ones stored in your computer.
Of course, if you've already done this, then it's either a Leopard "quirk" or your Airport card. (Which you probably already figured out).

  • DVD Writer Speed Slow Down

YesterDay I was write a DualLayer DVD(8.5GB) of non-branded Empty Disk using Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010. It provide me only 2.4x speed for this write. The write was successfull. But after this write I try to write another dvd of 4.7GB then it give me only 4x for non-branded empty disk and 8x for branded like SONY Empty Disk, and it is the maximum speed.
Is this maximum speed or my laptop Dvd Writer has any problem. PlZ help me.
My Laptop is: Compaq Presario CQ42-273TU
It is a newly purchased laptop.

    I have some similar issues:
Recording dual layer dvd's i set the speed to 2.4x, but the burner does the process at 0.6x ~ 0.7x...............
This happens when using growisofs............... and i tryied both by command line and via K3b... getting the very same results allways: A dual layer dvd takes 3 hours to be recorded at this speed.......

  • Infinty 2 Speed Slowing Down

    Hi
Hopefully someone can help me with my slowly dropping connection speeds.
I've had Inifinity 2 since March 2014 and have been reasonably pleased with the service up until recently.
My connection isn't the most stable usually disconnecting roughly every 2 days or so and the speed range normally varies between 65-55Mbps.
On Apil 1st 2015 I was connected at a download speed of 65.35Mbps & 19.53Mbps upload (HH5 DSL Line Status Figures)
Today I come home to find my speed has dropped to an all time low of 45.8Mbps. I realise this speed is within the suppossed acceptable limits but I am concerned it has dropped almost 20Mbps in less than 2 months.
The only thing I have noticed from the router stats is that my noise margin on the downstream has risen slowly from around 6 earlier in the year to over 10 as of today. I have tried a quiet line test be it appeared silent.
Hopefully someone can offer some advice or suggestions.
I have screenshots of the router stats but can't work out how to post them in a readable size!

  • Internet speeds keep slowing down to a crawl

I'm having a problem that has only developed in the past week which was during a time when I haven't changed any configurations in that period of time since my son was born a week ago yesterday and I obviously had more important things to do than mess with my network configurations. However, about 2 weeks prior to his birth, in the process of configuring a baby monitoring system with icam source, 3 weeks or so ago, I read that I might be able to improve my internet performance, I ran googles namebench a couple of times and added and re-ordered the DNS servers that had been listed prior to any problems developing based on its' reports. My internet speeds improved as a result of changing those DNS settings and stayed good until the past week. But of course, we now need to use the computer as part of our baby monitoring system and it's not working worth a **** and I'm getting frustrated since I can't put my finger on the problem and I don't really have time to spin around in circles right now. I'm sure it's probably something simple and I can't put my finger on it though. Sleep deprivation is new to me.......
I've kept running log of notes so this is a little deshoveled but I figured the more information I provide the better the chance someone might help me get this solved quickly.
In the last week, since my sons birth, my internet speeds would be okay after restarts and resetting everything, 2.5 Mbps or so but after a 10-15 minutes it starts to slow down to .2-.3 Mbps. I went thru all my network settings, restarted everything, repaired permissions, I've changed ethernet cables reset PRAM, firewall is running, stealth mode enabled, allow signed software incoming connections and my various other programs such as netsessionmac4f3c6b, skype, java, itunes, etc.
All sharing services off and pretty basic login items at startup including growl.
I had AT&T come out and check my DSL line and everything checked out on their end up to and out of the DSL modem based in their equipment tests.
The problem seems to start when I connect my imac (a fairly loaded 27" imac I got in Dec.) First off, as soon as the imac is connected to the modem via ethernet, the old ethernet modem flashes and continues to flash, even right after startup. So the tech thought something was running in the background and I can't figure out what. I looked through login items but don't see anything that would be a problem and am afraid to eliminate everything.
So I created a guest account to eliminate any login items (I think) and in I got 5.69 Mbps right off the bat. But after a minute or two, without changing anything my download speed slows down and I get for example .77 Mbps. The same thing happens with my administrator account on the imac. Fast speeds at startup and more importantly if I change the configuration by switching between ethernet and airport, I get fast speeds right after changing the configuration but after a minute or two I am well below 1.0 Mbps. I've got several network configurations with automatic, airport and ethernet set up in different ways including a clean ethernet connection with the original DNS settings.
I haven't set up an airport only account but that really isn't the way I want to hook up the computer that sits right next to the modem and runs my network. Restarting the old modem and direct connecting the computer to the modem results in the same thing happening.
I connected my ethernet from the (old?) modem directly to my ancient powerbook G4 and I got +5.6 Mbps download but it also slowed down to 300 kbps after 5 minutes or so the first time (old modem?)
Now to explain why I have "old?" listed above. I was then able to get a new DSL modem from AT&T, hook it up just fine, get enormously faster internet service in the 5,000 kbps only to have it slow back down to around 300 kpbs after connected for several minutes.
    directly connected to imac-bypassing router
    3,500 kbps
    after 15 minutes-250 kbps
connected to imac thru router/time capsule with airport extreme
    2500 kbps
    after 15 minutes=166 kbps
directly connected to an older powerbook G4 with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.65 Mbps on speedtest
    after 15 minutes=5.67 Mbps
    after 30 minutes= 5.59 Mbps
    1 hour-5.66 Mbps
Very solid, stable readings for what I am used to. This would seem to isolate the problem to the imac.
directly connected to imac with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.8 Mbps on speedtest
    after 30 minutes= .60 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
    1 hour= .46 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
Now a problem that only started last night after I hooked up the new modem and started up my old Time capsule/airport configuration, I got a message that said something to effect of "another device on this network is using computer IP address 192.168.1.64. So I tried manually changing last digit of the IP address on the computer to one number higher and it kept saying the start and end range were incorrect so I shut the airport station down since when it was connected, it would not allow the computer to connect thru the router via ethernet. I did a hard reset on the airport and I got it back up and running just fine but the internet speeds on the imacs' ethernet connections are so slow it's practically worthless. I also checked to see what was connected to my airport on any given occasion, 2 iphones, 2 pads, another imac running upstairs and a newer powerbook running icam source that is supposed to be the baby monitor. Except for the laptop everything can use "802.11n" but the powerbook only connects via 802.11g so I have set the airport to that limiting setting.
Any suggestions? Is there a way for me to log what is happening so I can report in more detail?

First thing is to check if the wireless is on a sensible channel: HomeHub doesn't always make sensible choices.  Install inSSIDer on your laptop and see what other devices there are around and if there is any clash.  Also, try moving the HomeHub around a little, even quite small differences can make a big difference to wireless signals.
You could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.  Easy to do, but can be a bit unsightly.  If most of your devices are upstairs, you could use this cable to connect the modem to the HomeHub.  If you have devices both up and down, you may want to keep the HomeHub downstairs and add a switch upstairs.
HomePlug may be suitable for you.  If you search Amazon for HomePlug you will see a couple of kits for just over £30.  Don't go for an 85Mbps one.  A 200Mbps such as the TP-link or D-Link should be much better than wireless, but not as good as a cable.
Depending excatly how many devices you want to connect and where, you can pay more and have a builtin wireless at one end: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1408-Wireless-N-HomePlug-Adapter/dp/B00472MMCQ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qi...  Or it may be best for you to use the basic devices and add an old wireless router in switch mode.

  • What is making my mac slow down? I put some music on and now it's slow.

    Mac os 10.5.8
I recently aquired this used mac computer.  After installing several music cd's i noticed the computer speed slowing down.  Could this be the cause? Or could it be something else?  Should I uninstall the music?  I know very little about the mac computer.

Getting the sequence of the operating system naming is important.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac.  That will tell you your Mac OS X version.  iOS is for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch.     Knowing if you have an Intel or PowerPC is important as that will tell you what your machine has the capability of running.
Double clicking Macintosh HD, and View menu -> Show Status bar will show you how much space you have left, and how much is available.  That will tell you if you have overfilled your Mac with data.  There are many reasons for speed slowdown, which my subscription only FAQ explain*:
