SpeedStream 4100 and AEBS

I replaced my conked out SpeedStream 5260 with the AT&T recommended SpeedStream 4100. My hope was just a quick swap, but no such luck. I am able to connect to the Internet when I connect the modem directly to my PowerBook G4, but cannot get the AEBS to connect when I plug the modem into my AEBS WAN connection.
I've done some searching and found some similar and 1 exact issues but no luck. What I understand so far is that the 4100 does the PPPoE at and uses the same IP that the AEBS WAN connect wants by default -- 192.168.0.1. If the 4100 modem is handling the PPoE and has the unchangeable IP of 192.168.0.1. I did change the modem setting for "Let LAN device share Internet address?" to No ((Mode: PPP on the modem (Private IP for LAN device))
The question is: what should I set the Internet settings to in the AirPort Admin Utility? I've only got 3 options: Ethernet/Manual or AutoDHCP, PPPoE, and WDS. I've been trying all sometimes manually putting in 192.168.1.1 as the IP with 255.255.0.0 as the sub. I've seen the Internet Connect utility tell me under the AirPort option that I'm connected to the Internet using Ethernet but I am unable to connect through a browser.
And ... er ... where do the Network settings in the System Pref panel play into all of this? Any advice would be helpful. I think I've tried everything at least twice. I was told by AT&T/SBC that they can not provide support for the AirPort connection.
Thanks

On the Internet tab, choose "Ethernet/AutoDHCP." On the Network tab, enable "Distribute IP addreses."
If this doesn't work, then on the Internet tab, choose "PPPoE" and enter the values provided by your ISP.
where do the Network settings in the System Pref panel play into all of this?
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
- Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
- Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort

- Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
- Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
Proxies tab
- Configure Proxies: Manually
- Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
- Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
- Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
- Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

i have had my speedstream and wrt54g running together before on my pc. however i just got a laptop and i would like to start using the wireless internet, and when i hook up the wrt54g to my speedstream modem, all the lights are green and the wires are connected, but i cannot seem to connect to the internet. i type in my ip and when i try to connect the modem nothing seems to work. im just connected to my speedstream right now and there is no problems at all, however when i try to have it running with the wrt54g, i cannot connect. does anyone have any thoughts? step by steps? or help in general?
    thank you very much.

  • 1811W router unable to get DHCP IP from Speedstream 4100

I have a Yahoo-ATT DSL installation with 1 dynamic IP address. It uses an ISP supplied speedstream 4100 DSL modem. The 4100 appears to take care of all the PPOE duties and DHCP connections from PCs or low-end routers (I'm temporarily using a NetGear unit) work fine.
BUT, when I swap the Netgear out for my new 1811W, the cisco unit is unable to obtain a DHCP address from the modem. I can see the request on the modem lights when I do a "no shutdown fastethernet0"...but I never get an IP address.
The speedstream appears to support 100Mbps and I have tried 100, 10 and Auto on the 1811W. I can look at the log on the modem and it does not show any activity by the modem's dhcp service. However, when I swap back to the netgear unit, I can see appropriate entries in the modem log.
The 1811 is new and I strongly suspect its working ...I tested it on a different DSL line that had static IP. I see a number of similar issues in this forum; but have not seen any resolution that seems to fit my situation.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated...my next step will be log the DHCP packets with a sniffer. I think I know what I"ll see...1811W DHCP broadcast...no response. But, that won't help me resolve the issue.

Hi, this would a config example once you configure the dsl modem for bridging:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk175/tk15/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080126dc0.shtml
look at the 2600 part. you can omit these commands that are for older versions:
    vpdn enable
    no vpdn logging
    vpdn-group 1
    request-dialin
    protocol pppoe

  • Safari and Modem Speedstream 4100

Well, after having a bunch of problems with this modem, an AT&T agent told me that Safari 3.0 is not compatible with Speedstream....and so since i dont want to have any more problems with this modem went ahead and bought a new one, the Motorola DSL Modem Model 2210-02....has anybody been having problems with this modem and safari 3.0??

    HI Anny,
Your profile indicates you are running 10.4.10. Updating to 10.4.11 might help. Also, the most recent version for Safari is 3.1.2. To update softare, click the Apple logo top left in your Desktop, then click Software Update ...
Try Repairing Disk Permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities). Select MacintoshHD 10.4.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • HP Laserjet 4100 and Belkin USB Parallel Printer Adapter

I'm a brand new Mac user. I wanted to connect my Mac to my existing HP Laserjet 4100 printer. To do that, I had to purchase a Belkin USB Parallel Printer Adapter. I saw that Mac wasn't supported by this adapter, so I called Belkin and they said it was supported. Tried to set it up and failed. Called Apple for help, was on the phone for quite a long time, and no luck. Went to HP site to load drivers, and no luck. I contacted HP online and was told this product is no longer supported.
So right now when I try to print, I get a message that says the printer is offline...but it's not. Anyone have any ideas for a workaround?
Thanks so much for any thoughts.

I think you should be a little more patient in trying to find a solution. I have an HP Laserjet 4ML from 1992 that I still use every day.
In my case, I purchased an HP Jetdirect external parallel print server and have the printer connected to my router that way.
You may also want to power off the printer, reset Printing System, and then power on the printer and re-Add it in Print & Fax.

Hello wiwmd. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) the older 802.11b/g (domed-shaped) or newer 802.11n (square-ish) model? Regardless of model, which wireless encryption standard: WEP, WPA, or WPA2 are you using? Finally, which Service Pack level is your XP Pro running: SP1, SP2, or SP3?

  • Personal file sharing via a cable modem and AEBS

At home, my Internet access is provided by a Comcast cable modem. It used DHCP; however, the address I get assigned rarely changes. What I want to do is use my G5 and an external disk to back up files from my MBP while I travel.
I have a new AirPort Extreme Base Station which I use as my router. Is there any documentation available to download that tells me how to set up the AirPort base station to allow me to mount my G5's disks on my laptop when I travel? I know I need to enable personal file sharing, but how do I get the router to allow me to access my G5's disks from my hotel? I also want to access the disk drive that's connected to my AEBS remotely.
I can do this when I connect via my MBP to my AEBS wirelessly and it works great, but I don't know what to do on the AEBS to allow it to be done from anywhere.
    Any tips will be appreciated.

Hmmm, don't have the "Extreme" AEBS here... Express or something, so it looks like this one...
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Apple/AirPortExtreme/FTP. htm
And the setup has no "continue" button... just the ADD, OK, and then Update buttons.

  • Using Time machine with an external hard drive and AEBS???have a

I have a 500GB external hard drive that I have connected to my AEBS by USB. Recently upgraded to Leopard but cannot get time machine to see my hard drive.
    The base station is 802.11n.
    Is this possible?
Have read a few other threads and can't seem to get to the bottom of it.
    Thanks,
    T

In addition, when you get Time Machine to be able to see your external drive connected to AEBS, in TM prefs exclude all but one small folder from your hard drive (say, /User/Library) and allow TM to do its initial backup. This will create the sparsebundle (resizable disk image) that TM uses to back up to a network drive.
Then turn off Time Machine, unmount the USB drive and reconnect it directly to your Mac, mount it, set TM prefs to use the sparsebundle that newly-mounted drive, remove previously excluded items from TM's exclusion list, and turn TM back on. TM will then back up everything much more quickly than if connected wirelessly.
After that, you can return the USB drive to the AEBS. Incremental backups take much less time, so the slower connection won't matter as much.

  • Hard Drive, Printer and AEBS

I have a Canon Pixma printer hooked up to USB port on AEBS which I just bought. Everything works without problems (so far at least). This may seem like a stupid question, but I'd like to also hook up one of my LaCie external hard drives to access wirelessly, but oviously there is only one USB port. Is there any way to do this without disconnecting the printer?
    Thank you

    Hi Gregory
I'm not sure of your exact position, but I can share my experience with a similar configuration and issue today.
Picked up my Airport Extreme today, connected the hard drive and 2 printers through a USB hub and the printers worked fine, but the hard disk couldn't be seen.
The hard disk was visible and worked fine when the USB hub was removed. This USB hub did not have it's own power source, and didn't seem to be picking up its power from the AEBS, so I replaced it with a Belkin 4 port USB hub (there are many available, so it may not be the same as yours) and tried again. This one has an external power supply of its own.
    Success! ... eventually.
At first nothing showed up under the Disk Utility, as with your situation. I had to disconnect the hard disk, disconnect the USB hub, restart the AEBS, and reconnect all the devices.
    Then it became visible.
Now, I have 2 wireless routers in the house... interference means I can't just gave one. To see the hard disk and printers through on to the other router's network I had to go into the settings, using Airport Utility, Base Station - Manual Setup, then on the Printers tab and Disks tab selecting 'Share printers/disks over Ethernet WAN port'.
Happy days... all now working fine.
I didn't get a 'Central Office' message. Where does that appear?
What other settings are you using? Are you using WPA, WPA2 or WEP and is this your primary router and DHCP server or are you connecting across another?

  • Need to set up a dual network with AEBS"n" and AEBS"g"

I've got a new Airport Extreme Base Station 5GHz (n only) wireless network set up for my new Apple TV.
But now my older Macs can't access the wireless network. So I'd like to set up my old AEBS"g" in order to connect.
I tried plugging the ethernet between the two AEBS and configuring them. I got a message saying the WAN wasn't plugged in. I thought I needed to use the LAN.
I'm really confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
    -Mike

IMO, page 41 on the "Designing AirPort Networks" is incorrect. On the TC or AEBS that's set as a bridge, the WAN port should be set as Ethernet (not PPPoE), and the Ethernet uplink cable should go to the WAN port. If not, you will see the "WAN wasn't plugged in" message.

  • Settings allied data Copperjet 1616-2p and AEBS

I am trying to install the Apple Airport Extreme BS in combination with an Allied data Copperjet 1616-2p modem/router. My internet connection should in optimal conditions be able to get to speeds of 2Mb/sec. In my settings, everything works, as long as I put the AEBS in bridge mode. Only problem is that the speed of the internet connection and the network speed is not optimal. Network speed is limited to 500kb/sec. and internet speed is 500kb/sec or slower. Sometimes dropping to 10kb/sec.
Does anyone know the optimal settings fot this combination? Is it possible to forward the modem (Bridge?) to the AEBS, and use the AEBS as a modem? Is it possible to use portforwarding?

Does anyone know the optimal settings fot this combination? Is it possible to forward the modem (Bridge?) to the AEBS, and use the AEBS as a modem? Is it possible to use portforwarding?
It may be possible to reconfigure this Gateway as a bridge. The issue you may come up with is if you are using ADSL Internet service and your ISP requires PPPoA to authenticate you before gaining access to their service, the AEBS does not support this protocol ... only PPPoE.
Also, the AEBSn is not a Gateway or a combination modem & router type of device ... only the router part. You would still need a modem for Internet access.
Depending on which device, the Gateway or AEBS has NAT enabled, it should be possible to configure them for port forwarding/mapping.

  • Westfall 6100 DSL Modem and AEBS

I have searched the forum for a solution and cannot find one so am asking here. Verizon had me install a new DSL modem, the Westfall 6100. It is set up as a bridge. After the initial modem setup and then connection to the AEBS (Note everything worked fine with the old mode before the changes) the AEBS would not give the green light and not connect to the internet. I made the mistake of changing connection sharing to Off(Bridge Mode) and now the internet works but I have other problems such as getting the Slingbox to work and my network printers. So I am trying to change back to Share a Public IP address. When I do that, I get an error that the DHCP Beginning and Ending Address are in conflict with the WAN IP address of the Apple Wireless Device. The AEBS never picks up the IP address sent by Verizon.
Any ideas on how to resolve this would be appreciated. Seems like I am spinning my wheels here and getting nowhere. Thanks

    Hi Bob,
More Info. I had to call Verizon Tech support again. To make a long story short, this is the way Verizon now does things. The modem has to be set up as bridge and routed bridge. In private lan settings, you have to enable DHCP server as well and let the modem assign addresses. This was another problem I had. I wanted to use the AEBS to do the DHCP. I had to turn of IP sharing and have the AEBS set to bridge mode. Then the modem does all of the addressing. I really don't care for this setup but it is the only way to get things working. The support guy told me PPPoE won't work. Since I already have 4 hours on the phone with tech support this week, I did not want to get into it.
Then I called Slingbox and they walked me through setting up things so I could use slingbox when out and about. This meant going into the modem again and enabling port forwarding.
Seems that Verizon has taken control of things with their new modems. At least things are working now.

  • Airport Utility and AEBS DB firmware updates question

I have an AEBS DB2 version set up with a MBP Airport Utility which came from the install cd of the AEBS, which was Airport Utility 5.5 and the AEBS DB2 had firmware 7.5. I did update to 5.5.1 and 7.5.1, respectively and all is fine. However, I have another MBP that is just set up to use the wifi signal. I noticed that it also wanted to pull in the AU 5.5.1 update even thought I never installed the AU from the AEBS cd. I am wondering if 5.5.x, which could only be gotten on the cd, is now just the standard and it doesn't matter. Or, did the other MBP just know it was using a wifi AEBS and thus Apple set it up to find that newer update..after all, It never found a 5.5 before...it was just using whatever upto 10.6.2 had installed.

I noticed that it also wanted to pull in the AU 5.5.1 update even thought I never installed the AU from the AEBS cd. I am wondering if 5.5.x, which could only be gotten on the cd, is now just the standard and it doesn't matter.
Interestingly, when 5.5.1 became available via AU, it also showed up for Macs & PCs via a download from Apple Support - Downloads site as well ... and you're right, v5.5 is only available from the CD.

  • Motorola SB4200E Cable modem and AEBS no Internet connection

    Hello
I've bought the new AEBS from an Apple Store in the U.S. Got back home in France thinking it's gonna be an easy ride setting up my new faster and longer range capable wireless network. After all that's what Apple says: "easy setup ... in most cases ". After ten hours trying different settings, no way to get an Internet connection !
The AEBS distributes IPs to the connected clients but cannot get an Internet address from the cable modem.
    My configuration :
Motorola cable modem (SB4200E) : configured as DHCP server
    Client computers:
iMac Core Duo connected to the AEBS via Ethernet
Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo wirelessly connected to AEBS
    MacPro
    AEBS:
    Wireless Security : WPA2 Personal
Radio mode 802.11n only (5 Ghz)
    Channel : Automatic
    No Access control
I've tried to reboot, reset, ... the cable modem without success.
Oh forgot to say that my old 54g Netgear router is able to reach my MacPro in the bedroom where the AEBS is no show ! (Twice the range ???) and took me 30 seconds to configure.
Up until now AEBS has only been dissapointment and frustration.
    Thanks for any help.

I ended up using my new AEBS in bridge mode and keep my "old" Netgear 54g for Internet connection.
Some pros though: I got a 10 MB/sec transfert rate between my wireless Macbook Pro and my wired iMac both connected to the AEBS.
Some cons: range is far from what I dreamt of (lesser range than the Netgear 54g at the same location in the room)
My HP Laserjet 1020 Printer sometimes shows up in the "Printers pane" and suddenly disappears and even when it's there, printing doesn't work !
Might come from the driver though as this printer has no official driver available for OS X (I use the 1022 driver instead)
    Welcome to Apple world !
Don't misunderstand my words here, I like Apple products very much, I got three Intel Macs at home, but being an Apple product doesn't ALWAYS go with plug and play. A few software upgrades might make this AEBS a very good product though.
