Spell Check Bug Hangs

I try to send a message, but the spell checker hangs on certain words and I get the spinning wheel and can't even quit Mail -- have to do a forced quit. Any ideas what causes spell check to hang? I did notice it hung up on an abreviated word.

I have this same bug on a unibody macbook running 10.6.2. WHen sending with "check spelling on send" enabled, or when checking spelling on a newly-composed email, Mail hangs. The only way out is force quit.
I have gone into System Preferences->Language & Text->Text and selected "U.S. English" for the spelling (dictionary?) from the default of "Automatic by Language."
I tried trashing the prefs for mail (bad idea - restored them later).
I'm calling this a bug.

• Spell checker bug

There is one spell checker bug:
When I end a paragraph with a full stop and then press enter then the red underlined mis-spelled words are "unmarked" as in the red zig-zag line underneath the mis-spelled words disappears and I cant correct them any more or lose track which words are mis-spelled.
The red zig-zag lines underneath the mis-spelled words should never disappear until the word is spelled properly.
Thats a BUG.
To make the red underlines re-appear I have to rightclick....untick "Check Spelling" and then activate it again.
Thats too complicated.

Search to see if a Bug is filed about that "glitch". If isn't one already, use File a Bug about it yourself. <br />

• Apex 3.2 Spell Check Bug?

I have a text area with spell check that holds 4000 characters. The spell check works well until approx 3800 characters are entered into the field. At that point in time the spell check brings up a page can't be displayed popup. Ideas?

blarman,
I was going to ask you to reproduce this on apex.oracle.com, but of course, you cannot. The images directory on apex.oracle.com has been recursively copied into numerous times. The problem you're reporting is only in the context of a new installation.
I've confirmed the bug. It's too late for the forthcoming APEX 3.2.1 patch set, but I do have this now fixed for APEX 4.0.
Thanks for taking the time to report this issue. I appreciate it.

• Bug? Mailto: in combination with Office 2013 Spell Checking.

Dear community,
For one of our sollutions we use the mailto protocol to send a hyperlink which users can use to automatically open a predefined new-email-window.
This works fine with Office Professional Plus 2010 [EN-US] (32bit) in combinatione with Microsoft Office Language Pack 2010 - Dutch/Nederlands (32bit).
However, Office Professional Plus 2013 [EN-US] (32bit), in combination with Microsoft Office Language Pack 2013 - Dutch/Nederlands (32bit), crashes whenever the spellingcheck is started.
The mailto-command we use to reproduce this problem is (enter command in Internet Explorer, open with Outlook):
mailto:[email protected]?subject=%20Actie%20vereist&body=%5b2103162%2f335159076094968874376260057075247208793%5d
During analyses we concluded:
- Office Configuration Analyzer Tool 1.2 (Full Scan) did not find any related issues.
- Spellchecker crashes while checking the text within the body.
- Uninstalling Microsoft Office Language Pack 2013 - Dutch/Nederlands solves the problem, but obviosly, we want to keep the Dutch spelling check functionality.
- Standard Englsh (U.S.) spellchecking functions without problems.
- This problem is reproducable on any computer running Office Professional Plus 2013 [EN-US] in combination with the Dutch (Nederlands) spelling check. Tried multiple hardware configurations (Intel based) and multiple OS's (Windows 7 Enterprise
(64bit), Windows 8.1 Enterprise (64bit), Windows 8.1 Pro (64bit). All with the same result.
Is there way to solve this issue, without loosing Outlook 2013 as client and Dutch Spelling Check capabilities?
Kind regards,
Leon Kandelaars.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reaction.
Q - Do you mean Outlook crashes when we click the Spelling & Grammar button under Review tab?
A - Yeah, if you try to edit the mail and have 'check spelling as you type' activated, it wil crash as well.
Q - If we copy the email body and paste it to a new email message, will this issue continue?
Does this   issue happen with other Office 2013 programs? Please try to use 'spell check' in word and check if the same issue occurs.
A - If you copy the generated body to a new email or Word 2013, the spelling check will in both cases crash the application.
Q - In addition, we can also have a look at the event log to see if we can find anything useful.
A - The crash generates an "Application" "Hang error". I've generated 2 (1 with Outlook, 1 with Word):

How do I report a bug for spell check?  I noticed if a word is spelled incorrectly Captivate 6.0 does not flag it as a misspelled word if the first letter.  I noticed when I had Administrator and Financial misspelled it did not catch the typo.  I noticed it when I exported it to Word.

• Firefox 14.0.1 has a spell checking error./ bug in the code

I just had all my machines update to 14.0.1 (WIN XP SP3)
I had a clean boot right before the update occurred.
This is the first time I had used this version on this machine.
When the program came up, I had no access to the spell checker at all. Nothing I did could change this (checking and un-checking the feature in the right click menu.
So, I selected the option of restarting the browser in "SAFE MODE" with no add-ons. There was no change at all (still no spell checking)
So, I went to this site, made an account, activated the count (this entire time FIREFOX had no spell checking) and I created a report.
I was most of the way done writing the report when suddenly the spell checking started to work. I made no changes to the settings, when suddenly I had spell checking working.
This means there is an intermittent error;p often the hardest to find from my 20+ years of programming experience (Senior IT contractor)..
So, have find finding this one. Intermittent bugs are the hardest to track, and tend to come from issues like scope issues, settings stored in files/registry, overly convoluted code (like a rush job that isn't fully understood & was just hammered on until it seemed to work). From my experience it often happens in the last steps of finishing a release - accidentally introducing a bug into what was a working section of code (unexpected ramification are a suspect) into a previously working program piece of a program.

Hi BarleySinger and thanks for reporting us this issue.
Yes. Intermitent bugs are really difficult to track and solve, so please try to do this things:
* Try to reset Firefox so all settings that may be creating this problems will be removed.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
* Try to perform a antivirus scan on your computer so you check you have no malware.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:
* MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
* TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
* Microsoft Security Essentials (A good permanent anti-virus if you don't already have one)
Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
* Send us troubleshooting information.
In order to be able to find the correct solution to your problem, we require some more non-personal information from you. Please do the following:
*Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting information from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting information from the menu.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
*At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy all to clipboard. Click it.
*Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.
If you need further information about the Troubleshooting information page, please read the article Using the Troubleshooting Information page.
Thanks in advance for your help!
* Check the issue is still reproducing intermitently, and it was not an isolated problem (Maybe Firefox was still preparing the spell checker).

• Mail spell check hangs on last misspelled word

Hi everybody,
I have a bit of a dilemma that is quite annoying, and I would love it not to be. My spell checker in Mail (OSX 10.4.10) hangs on the last word when spell checking a message. I am able to check my spelling and choose Ignore/Guess/Correct etc. but when it reaches the end of my email it stops. Spell check will identify the misspelled word, but will not allow me to make corrections or ignore the word like it used to. The familiar tone and empty spell check box is no longer to be found.
But this does work in textedit! No problems what so ever. I have tried to scour these forums and tried a few things, but still nothing. I have also noticed this problem occurs in another user account.
I have checked the Ownership and Permissions of the spell checker file, deleted preference files, re-installed Mail by itself, performed an archive and install, completely reinstalled OSX and still nothing.
So now if any of you have an idea please let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Sebastian

You're welcome.
I do not have that checked
Well, you should. Leaving messages on the server indefinitely may end up clogging up your mail account there and cause this kind of problems. Just specify After one week or After one month if you don't want messages to be removed from the server immediately.

• Spell check is bugging me..

Hi
Just added more RAM to my 07 mini and updated it to SL everything seems fine but 'spell check' sticks, what I mean is the spell suggestions stay at the old word even though spell check has moved on to a new word.. if you get what I mean..
so how can I re build spell check so it works like it should..
thanks for your answers..
p.e tried a 'permissions repair' with out success..

no that's cool sorted..
SP>>Language and text>>text>>spelling>>uncheck everything that isn't British English.. and now it's fine..
odd I discover that 5mins after I posted this question
hope it helps some one in the same situation as me anyhoos..

• We get paid with cheques and organise specialised coloured aluminium. I can not rid my mac book pro or my IMac of the american spell checker.

We get paid with cheques and organise, specialised coloured aluminium. I can not rid my apple devices, mac book pro, desktop IMac or IPhone of the american spell checker.
Everything, Numbers and Pages et al, always default back to US English. To cap it all we sell luminaires (yes this is a word used in our world of lighting design everyday) Mac and Microsoft always default - my docs have more words underlined in red that not. I once found a permanent solution for Microsoft that removed US english - and then the laptop died. Can anyone rid me of this irritation.

GOT IT FIXED!  WOW!
I did better than filing a bug report.  I went to Apple support, chose chat support.  When it wanted $15 or was it $19 I filed an exemption which was a choice on the page, based on the fact that I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
Got the chat fellow and here we go!!!!  ;-)  First off he sent me this app so he could see my screen.  Then he had me do a few things  like move the system configuration folder to the desktop and repair permissions.  Then he had me reset the SMC and Pram.  Nothing helped, all the ghost computers still showed in the finder.
As a last resort he had me reset my Apple Airport Extreme.  Wala!  Ghost Computers GONE!  He said it was a combination of stuff but mainly it was the airport extreme when I installed Yosemite.  Something to do with my network.  We'll see if it holds or if the problem comes back but as of now there's no more ghost computers in the sharing part of the finder.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions.  I hope maybe this helps someone else.

• Spell Check is not working, still......

Another long time user that has been with you for years has had enough, over to Opera where I can write an email without looking like an unprofessional <!-- dipshit --> dummy that can't even use spell checker.
Linux mint 14, fully updated, two different pc's both same problem with spellchecker, this problem has been going on for a long time now. Do you really expect people to use a browser without a spellcheck? This has been a 'bug' for how long now? People just go elsewhere, why wouldn't you, try running a business and sending people sketchy looking emails.
I fix PC's for a living, I used to put everybody onto Thunderbird and Firefox, do you think I still do that? Obviously like the people I know who do the same thing for a living, I put them onto Chrome so they don't ring me complaining that it doesn't work properly.
You guys are loosing market share for a reason, we need a functional non bloated browser that doesn't freeze and crash all the time, <!-- fuck --> forget the fancy add-ons and themes, make the <!-- fucking thing --> basics work because from the techiest person to the most useless pleb luddite, we all need the basics to work or the browser is a useless piece of <!-- shit --> crap.
This site is proof of how you are alienating people too, I go to register and it tells me I don't need to register for a new question, I click on that and half way through it asks me to register, then when registering it took about 6 tries for your javascript to accept it: "username too short", "password is short", "username exists". Tell us before ffs! I nearly gave up and shut the window. Anybody unfamiliar with pc's would have given up after a try or two and gone back to IE.
Please, please, get your <!-- shit --> stuff together, I love Mozilla and I love Firefox, it's named after my favourite baddies in the original Donkey Kong, ffs, I love you guys, get back to basics and make a functional browser that people prefer to IE, you are killing it, get back to basics and make it FUNCTIONAL

I had this problem too, spell check stopped working, I presume after an update. The solution is to add a dictionary, which you can by going to
Firefox language Tools
Though why this link is not on the same option tab as the spell check checkbox is beyond me. It appears that if your locale is US, Firefox is supposed to load the US dictionary, otherwise none. Pretty dumb, eh?

• System-wide Spell Checker Error

I newly installed Leopard on a MacBook Pro, and now in Mail, Safari and iTunes, I get a "Couldn't contact Spell Checker" error message when I try to type in these programs. The problem disappears in Mail if I set Spell Check to never in the preferences. Safari & iTunes don't have that option, that I could see.
But that's besides the point. Spell check should be seamless and automatic. The error doesn't just occur once. It basically hangs the program because the error cycles continuously and I have to force-quit to get out of the application.
So now I am using Firefox to type this because Safari wouldn't let me type without letting me know it can't contact spell checker.
To remedy the situation, I've verified and repaired permissions, although I did not see any permissions that related to this issue. I downloaded and re-installed the 10.5.1 update. No effect. I've spotlighted 'spell checker' and only gotten the .dll file from Windows as a return.
Guesses, anyone?

etresoft, thanks for the hint. I looked and found tons of stuff, but not a thing to do with the spell checker error. I did log into another profile on the affected machine and had no trouble whatsoever. Does that mean the problem is in my home/library? I think, hopefully logically, that there's another program causing this issue. What would be the logical way to approach this?

• Spell check not working correctly

I just noticed that when I'm composing an email in AOL mail that the red underline would appear under parts of a correctly spelled word as if some portion of that word was misspelled which isn't the case. I contacted AOL and they said it was probably a browser problem which turns out it is. After disabling spell check, in Tools, the problem went away. Re enable and the problem returns. I have the English language dictionary installed and I added the English language dictionary add on. This seems to have alleviated the problem, some what, but not completely. It sometimes will not underline an obviously misspelled word. Never had this problem until I installed FF 16. There has to be a bug in FF 16. Please review and advise. Thanks

Hi arejfour:
We're looking into this problem in bug 790475

• Spell checking in other languages using Pages for iPad

Does anybody know how to spell check a document in a language other than the primary language? For example the iPad is using English but I want to write a letter in German.
This was simple to do using Pages on the Mac. So far I'm stumped.

kennethfromtoronto wrote:
From Settings General International. Select keyboards and add the language(s) of your choice. Tou will now have a spell checker and word predicter for the selected languages.
Did you actually try this with Pages?  In the past this app had a bug where switching the keyboard did not work, you had to switch the OS language, as was stated earlier in this discussion.  If that is now fixed, that is good to hear.

• How can you turn off the spell checker in Firefox? (The menu option doesn't work.)

There was a solution to this I came across a long time ago, but I don't remember what it was. I want to turn off my spell checker in Firefox. The usual instructions given for doing this are to go into Options->Advanced and de-select "Check my spelling as I type". This doesn't work. Period. And this is a bug that has been around for a long time in Firefox.
What's a way to disable this? I don't like seeing a bunch of red lines under correctly spelled words that just happen to not be in Firefox's default dictionary, and I don't want to have to add things to my dictionary either.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

• My spell check only works for about half of an article. Is there a way to fix this?

When I'm on a wiki, looking at an article, I sometimes see a couple spelling errors that just bug me, so I sometimes go in and fix them. However, when I pull up the editing page, the spell check only works for about the first half of the article. I can't find the errors if they're in the second half of the article. Is there a way to fix this?

You can try basic steps like these in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
