Spell check crashes my InDesign CS5
I Guys any help please, when ever sumone uses the spellcheck it crashes InDesign.
As it's a plugin it's not an InDesign issue.
Try removing the plugin and see if the problem persists. This will tell you if the plugin is causing the issue or InDesign itself.
The only thing you could try is replacing your preferences.

If the problem is with the plugin you need to contact Pongrass.

PLEASE HELP-Is there a way to spell check footnotes in indesign cs2 separately
Is there a way to spell check footnotes in indesign or in incopy cs2 separately?
Select all the text - not in the footnotes - but in your normal text frames.
Then go to Window>Type and Tables>Character
Change the Language to No Language
Then run your spell check. It will only check the spelling in your Footnotes now.
When done, change the language back to whatever your usual dictionary language should be. (note it may still check text inside tables - so you might have to put up with that?)
Anyone know of a way to script changing all the text bar footnotes to No Language - run a spell check - then reset the text language back?

Spell Check Crashes Illustrator CC
FYI - When spell check hits a word that is on a path, it crashes the program. Happening consistently for more.
Hi Chunter,
Are you using any 3rd party plug-ins or any special font plug-in in Illustrator ?
Reason behind this is that, I have isolated the root cause and its the text object (attached in the snapshot). More over when I try to edit this text I get a warning dialog also.
This crash is also in AI CS6 and AI CS5. To me it seems to be a corrupt type object which is causing the crash. Can you please try to create a new similar type object artwork. And also the below listed text "AND SERVING AS AN EXAMPLE OF" should be present there otherwise the Check Spelling will do nothing.
With Best Regards,
Raghuveer

We create a monthly current events newsletter that contains many suggested urls for teachers to visit. The entire document is about 32 pages long.
When I spell check the entire file (prior to sending it out) there is a mix of regular text and urls in the document and ID crashes after about 15 or 20 ‘checks’. Sometimes just ID crashes but often the entire computer freezes up and needs a restart. I am using the latest version of Mavericks.
I have experienced this problem with CS 6, then with CC and now with CC 2014.
I have tried turning off ‘Dynamic spelling’, but this does not seem to help.
Anyone have any ideas???
Thank you.
Eric W.Eric, Is this happening in all the documents or just one particular doc??
If its one particular document then I would suggest that you try steps in : http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-indesign-documents.html
If its all the documents then delete the preferences, refer the document for locations : http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/indesign-preferences-support-file-locations.html
Also It would be helpful if you let us know if the issue is with one particular language or all the languages ( If you have multiple language text )

Crashes in Indesign CS5 related to New Pages and Smart Reflow
Anyone else having problems with page related crashes (linked to the LAYOUT ADJUSTMENT.APLN module in ID CS5 on Windows 7 x64, according to the crash report). I get regular crashes when text or table overflows and a new page is created using Smart Reflow, or when manually adding new pages via the New button on the Pages panel. The latter seems to be linked to clicking the new page button repeatedly to create several new pages.
I am working on a document created in CS4, so this might be the cause. I tried to recreate the crash in a new CS5 document, but was not able to, although I could not get Smart Reflow to work either when Limit to Master Text Frames is unchecked.
JI have the same, several files created in CS4 (with texts imported from Word). The files crashed in CS4, and CS5. CS4 Windows and Mac, CS5 Windows 7. It definitely has to do with adding pages and overflowing text, exactly as stated. I was not happy to buy from my own money this very expensive software to have it crash 20 times the first day I used it. And at least a 100 times on the third day. That felt like Windows 3.1 to me. You have to know exactly what to do not to let the program crash. I spend 9 hours on figuring out how to get all the hundreds of hours of work back from my crashing Indesign. I managed to get from completely unstable (crash every minute) to workable stable (10-20 crashes a day). I could now write a manual on workarounds "how not to crash CS5", yet cannot prevent all crashes (yet). Expensive software like this should definitely be better at preventing crashes. I still am sorry I didn't keep to MS Word! It works and crashes less than 5% of the time that Adobe does. Has less features, yet does basic features better (like footnotes, autonumbering etc). I have a very serious deadline and Adobe keeps on crashing.
Oh, and YES of course I export to IDML. Spent more money on OT fonts because I didn't trust my TT fonts. Googled like a madman for solutions. The went back to Zen and not sleeping just to get my book to the printer.
Do I sound frustrated? ;-) -
AppleScript crash Adobe InDesign CS5
This is specific script, its displays a dialog window via apple script make dialog command. Its a part of custom created small publishing system.
When script is running standalone – everything working well.
But this script is running from custom menu in InDesign. And it crash.
Custom menu is set via startup script – like is described in AS InDesign CS 5 guide.
Probably this is a program bug...This sounds like a familiar bug.
Please fill out a detailed bug report:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
You can try making the menu a sub-menu of the main menus.
Search the scripting forum, there was a discussion about this not too long ago...

Spell check crashes thunderbird
I used to have the setting as "check spelling as you write" and changed to "check spelling before sending email" in my options, because 2 out of 5 times I hit send to an email the spellchecker starts and it crashes Thunderbird. It still crashes. I loose all my text. Grrrr
To diagnose crashing problems with Thunderbird, and rule out third-party add-ons and OS problems, you can try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates. -
Indesign CS5 Crashes with Incopy Workflow
I work for a large publishing company that publishes thousands of titles per year. Several divisions use Indesign, but only our Publishing Division uses the Indesign/Incopy workflow, and they are the only division experiencing widespread crashing in CS5. The divisions who do not use Incopy are not crashing. Here's what we know causes the crashing in Indesign CS5:
1. Exporting stories to Incopy. This is a widespread, yet inconsistent problem. One time you crash, the next time you don't. We've done the IDML export to CS4, reopened the files and saved as CS5. This helped with some files, but not others. I talking about hundreds of different publications and files. All people are patched to the newest version. Some are on Snow Leopard and some are not. However, I'm on Snow Leopard and the crashing does happen on my computer too (sometimes). The problem continues. I've found workaround for some problems, but there's no workaround for exporting to Incopy. It's something you have to do in this workflow.
2. Saving an Indesign files with an Incopy story checked out. This will cause a crash almost every time. We've been in the Indesign/Incopy workflow since CS2 and never had this problem in the past. This is an easy fix; just make sure you check in stories before saving, but it's a hard habit for some to break.
These issues have been reported to Adobe, with absolutely NO explanation or resolution. After six years in this workflow, I'm at the point of having to consider abandoning Incopy -- not an easy thing to do in such a large organization. After 2 days straight, I FIGURED IT OUT!!!! I was trying everything, especially related to font book and fonts and resetting prefs, etc...
I narrowed it down to 1 constant variable: it's happening on the 2012 macbook's, so I reset my mac and held command + R and re-installed Lion, then I DID NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE FOR THE MACBOOK 2012. Then I tried exporting a smallest file size pdf with overset text and also tried deleting a page with an object on it and BAM! No blank warning dialog and even more importantly: NO MORE CRASHES!!! Hey, I might not lose all my clients afterall!
got the good ol' warning box we all love and missed:
Again:
- power off mac and turn back on while holding down Command + R (dont do it on an external keyboard just to be safe)
- choose the re-install Lion option (I'm sure there is another way to re-install Lion, this is just the way I did it, not saying its the best or only method)
- DO NOT INSTALL MACBOOK (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0 - THIS SCREWS ADOBE UP!
After you guys try this please let us know how your system is operating, I am noticing my macbook pro is so slow and when trying to send an email and choosing an email to reply to and attach something,etc.. each click triggers the beachball and I gotta wait a few moments..?? I'm sure we might be missing out on some good updates from not updating to the 1.0 software update....but....
So my final question is:
is this Apple's problem or Adobe's and who needs to do what here??? Why can't we all get along... -
Hi All,
I've got a client that's running into an intermittent crashing problem with InDesign. Ordinarily "intermittent" points to hardware, but we wanted to rule out bad software first, especially as InDesign is the ONLY application that's crashing on this system. The crashing doesn't seem to correspond to any given task that's executed within InDesign either. This is an iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (mid 2011 model), 8 GB of RAM. Original this iMac was running Snow Leopard with InDesign CS5 (7.0.4), and crashing fequently then. For numerous reasons including the crashing we did an erase and install of the OS, this time installing 10.8.2, and a fresh install of CS5 and ran all updates from Adobe (to 7.0.4), and then ran a Disk Permissions repair (we have not updated to 10.8.3 due to reports I've seen of more crashing with InDesign CS5). Fonts and InDesign application support files from ~/Library were migrated over manually, but no other user data. The crashing occurs within two user accounts on this fresh OS (one of which was created to troubleshoot with as a clean environment) so isn't likely user account related but due to fonts that may not be confirmed. Being that it's intermittent it's been quite hard to track down. Linotype Font Explorer is installed on this system and I have just now disabled the font activation plugins in case that is part of the problem here; haven't had a chance yet to let the system run without those to see if the problem is resolved. Two recent crash logs (below) show different activity causing the crash (I've included thread 0 only, but can post more if requested; my experience has been that thread 0 will usually give you what you need, but given that we're seeing different cuases here I'm at a loss). We have tried fresh RAM in the system in case this was related to bad memory, and that made no difference. Font caches for both applications and the OS have been cleared and fonts showing any missing printer font files have been disabled. Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
Many thanks,
Mike

The "link related" and "text related" crashes were what I interpretted here, too, though I'm at a loss on how to proceed given that this is a fresh system and applications. This is happening with multiple InDesign projects in a design office environment where many others work on the same files and none of the other computers are having problems with these files. I've removed the same files listed (thank you for those) before and did so effectively with creating the new user account to test with, but it had no effect. I just tried again though, as these files could easily have becone corrupt again if they were being written to when InDesign crashed. Will let you know if that makes any difference. I've also gone through and completely cleaned out the fonts again and once more cleared the font caches. If need be I'll reboot this system into safe mode and try that way.
Best,
Mike -
I cannot find a spell check anywhere in inDesign CS6. I have checked all drop down menus and sub menus and preferences and there is no mention of spell check anywhere.
Edit>spelling>check spelling .
Also check Edit>menus>edit>spelling, and make sure it may not turn off.
If the above not work try:
Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences

Opening file crashes Indesign CS5. What now?
I was able to find a discussion about this, but it seem like it ended without a solution.
If this is a font issue, is there a solution to this? I went to Font Book and cleared out any errors from all my fonts.
I created multiple backup files for this particular file and none of them open. All of them crashes my Indesign CS5.
Any suggestion on what I can do?thanks John. The font thing worked.
Great. What do you have to do around here to get Correct Answer points, anyhow? ()
Anyhow, I guess I should post the relevant stack trace in case other people have the same problem and are searching for it, since it got edited out above:

Indesign Spell Check plugin?
Hi all,
Have browsed the web a bit but haven't come across quite what I'm after.
I'm looking for a spell check plugin for InDesign CS6 that gives a little more flexibility over what it's searching for. I want to be able to customize the search.
For instance:
-- don't lookup uncapitalized sentences
-- don't lookup URLs
-- the ability to start and stop a search at the same point
-- sequential page spell check rather than random text boxes
I don't need vast databases of languages that some plugins provide, just a little better functionality. Any thoughts or plugins?
Thanks!
eu.I am looking for the same thing. I can't understand why adobe doesn't supply a more robust spellchecker.

InDesign (CC 2014) crashing every time I try to run a spell check
InDesign (CC 2014) crashing every time I try to run a spell check, I was wondering if anybody has had this before. I'm am also experiencing a delayed response, specially when I try to type, I get the colour wheel for about 5 to 8 seconds every time I click on a text box. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Where are you saving?
What exactly is in the file?
What exactly is in the pattern?
Are you svng a library or an Illustrator file? -
Hi there
This Mac is quite new and was originally a migration (using Migration Assistant) from an older Mac.
Illustrator and InDesign in CS5 were both crashing often and most of the time it's when placing an image (in either application) – it doesn't crash each time I try to place an image, but 90% of the crashes are when placing an image.
We tried lots of things, like cleaning out the fonts, clearing font caches etc. After several months of that, we decided to wipe the Mac clean and start from scratch. It has been reformatted with a clean install of the OS and only minimal additional software added. Although quite a few fonts have been reinstalled, they all validate in Font Book.
One other thing of note is that the Adobe Updater fails to complete an update and so we have had to update each application manually from the Adobe website.
I would be so grateful someone could help shed some light on what is going on. Here's an EtreCheck report. Can also provide crash reports from the Console if useful.
Thanks!
