Spell Check in Mail not working

I'm back.  Still no luck getting spell check to work.  With all the things I've tried, I'm sure it is now isolated to a operating system based problem.  The spell check on InDesign works, but mac mail, text edit, and Open Office.org which all access the OS based spelling function don't work.  Not only will they not do dynamic spelling, you can't highlight and tell any of these programs to check the spelling.  That doesn't work either.
I am running 10.6.8 on an iMAC 27" that is three years old.  I have kept up with my updates as they have come available, and my 3 year warranty just ran out in Nov. this year.  I would like to figure out how to fix this without having to wipe the hard drive or anything else that is so radical it might take me days to restore all my functionality.
Any suggestions?  Run the utilities and repaired permissions, restarted holding down the shift, etc. and nothing has helped.
thanks,
Kathy

Kathy, had same problem -- here is what I found just now by running tests:
Ok, what is going on is that the preferences for spelling and grammar in word and mail seem not to be working…..
in mail preferences there is no oportunity to set preference re spelling and grammar.  I can't find it in apple preferences either
You have to do it manually --- so if mispelled words in EMAIL YOU GO TO EDIT, SPELLING AND GRAMMAR:
if you check grammar with spelling -- all you get is red underline.
if you CHECK  check before sending nothing happens
If you check  ----check spelling and grammar (which seems to be the default)  nothing happens
BUT IF YOU CHECK   show spelling and grammar, you get the red underline and correction box
IN WORD, there is spelling preferences --- i chose : check spelling as type, suggest corrections, check grammar with spelling.
IF I go back to check preferences, they are changed for example if i had chosen check spelling while typing, when i go back it is unchosen
So with a document----- (before going back to preferences) ,only mispelled words are underlined red. BUT  if then you go to tools, spelling and grammar --- you get the box right away
i did this research before checking directions on web  see    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6911
Which for me would take copying the article, double space, under key words  AND THEN MAYBE i could understand it --
i have no idea if it correlates to actual testing above.

  • Spell check and autocorrect not working

I have them both turned on, but they aren't working. No corrections and no red lines.

I have never done that but I do think that it will reset all of your preferences back to factory defaults. I'm not sure if you have to enter the WiFi settings or passcode again.
The preferences are things like the keyboard dictionary, the brightness level, the auto correct and spell check. I think that it is a relatively benign thing to do.
I copied this from How to reset iPad Settings - for Dummies
    How to Reset iPad Settings
Life may not have a reset feature, but iPads do. If, for some reason, you want to return your iPad to its default settings, you can reset them. The last item under iPad's General settings is Reset. When you click it, you get options for resetting the following:
Reset All Settings: Every one of the preferences and settings are reset, though information you've added to apps like Calendar and Contacts doesn't change at all.

tohben wrote:is /Volumes/efi on OS X the same as /mnt/efi on linux?
In some sense, mount points are arbitrary -- you can mount a partition at /mnt/efi, at /boot/efi, at /Volumes/fred, at /some/weird/place, or whatever. There are a few limits on this based on certain critical directories -- for instance, attempting to mount anything at /etc is likely to lead to pain. Likewise, if a partition holds critical system files, it may need to be mounted at a particular location to do any good. For instance, if you split /var off onto its own partition, you'd want to mount that partition at /var (except perhaps for some very rare maintenance tasks). For the ESP, though, you can mount it just about anywhere -- under either Linux or OS X. The most common mount point in Linux is /boot/efi, followed in popularity by /boot. AFAIK, there's nothing remotely resembling a "standard" mount point for the ESP in OS X.
Speaking to your broader issue, tohben, I think you'll find this much easier if you download the official rEFInd binary .zip file from the rEFInd download page and run the install.sh script from OS X. That will do the installation for you. It's probably best to install it to the OS X root partition rather than to the ESP, because some users have problems with ~30-second delays when starting rEFInd from the ESP, but normally not when started from an HFS+ volume. (The default behavior of install.sh under OS X is to install to the OS X root partition; to install to the ESP, you must add the --esp option.) If you want rEFInd to read your Linux filesystems, you can add the --alldrivers option to install.sh to install drivers; or you can manually install only the driver(s) you need.

  • Spell Check and Proofreading not working

When typing, spell check doesn't underline words that are spelled incorrectiy. And proofreading doesn't underline grammaticaly incorrect things. I've typed words incorrectly to see if it would underline, and it doesn't. When i actually open the spell check window, it still doesn't say anything is wrong. This is a problem across my whole Mac, so it might be something with the OS. As im typing this when i spell "incorectly" it doesn't change it to "incorrectly". And help/suggestions?

I am not sure if you all are following this post anymore, but in case you are, here is a solution.
    With the Inspector open:
    Select All (the entire document)
Within Inspector click: TEXT > MORE
About 3/4 down the Inspector window should be "Language." Change the Language to English (or whatever you need).  You may have to change everything to "None" first and then back to English.  Somehtimes this Language feature can get changed accidentally if you copy and paste from another document, particually MS Word or GoogleDocs.  It does not always happen, but sometimes it does.  This should fix your problems.

  • Mail not working in new mini mac

i got new mini mac and mail not working. i get this message.
You have Mail version 4.2 (1078/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). For more information, click the Help button.
    dont know what to do
    thanks

Should be Mail 4.5.  With Spotlight, check to see if you have more than one version of the Mail app onboard.  Also, make sure that there is one at the root level of the Applications folder, and that it is namely simply Mail before applying the Combo.

  • Spell check in Mail Leopard

I accidently got some miss spelled words learned into Spell check in Mail app. On Leopard.
What can I do to correct this problem. Is there away to reset the spell checker so that miss spelled words I learned into spell checker can be eliminated?

See this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1650.html which among other things says "If you accidentally add a misspelled word to the dictionary, type the misspelling in the Spelling dialog, then click Forget."
What I found is if you highlighted the misspelled word control/right click on it and choose "Unlearn Spelling" from the menu.
You prompted me to look for a user dictionary that I can edit. I Have not yet found it.

  • Spell Check For Mail (10.5.7)

Does anyone know of a good, reliable spell check for Mail?

Ok. Not sure what I did - but I can now select "Show Spelling & Grammar.
However, when I now miss-spell a word, it gets underlined in red (check spelling as you type).
This where I need educating. I would have presumed that I could click the underlined word and be shown spelling suggestions (because I get this option in so many other software packages).
Secondly, is there a way of doing the following:
    1. Automatically launch the spell checker before sending? Or do I have to manually launch the spell checker each and every time? If I check "Show Spelling & Grammar) it defaults to not showing it when I re-launch.
    2. Can I Customize a button for the toolbar in oredr to have Spelling be launched from a click of a button?

  • Change Language for Spell Checking in Mail

    Hi,
as far as I could see from other articles here and on other sites, there is no easy way to change the language for spell checking in Mail. It's difficult to imagine that this is true, as in this global world switching from one to another language in different mails is (at least for non-US/UK/etc. users) an immanent need.
Thanks for letting me know if I am mistaken.

    Tom Gewecke wrote:

If what you are asking about is some kind of shortcut to avoid using the Edit menu, you are correct that nothing like that exists for Mail (or other Apple apps). I think if you use something like SpellCatcher you can switch via a single keystroke.
The fastest method I know of is through AppleScript. I personally use "quick and dirty" routines for shifting from French to English and vice versa, both in Mail and Safari. Your typical toggle-switch bare-bones app looks like this:
    tell application "Mail"
    tell application "System Events"
    tell application process "Mail"
    set frontmost to true
    try
click menu item "Show Spelling and Grammar" of menu "Spelling and Grammar" of menu item "Spelling and Grammar" of menu "Edit" of menu bar 1
set fen to window "Spelling and Grammar"
click pop up button 1 of fen
set lemenu to menu 1 of pop up button 1 of fen
if selected of menu item "Français" of lemenu is true then
click menu item "British English" of lemenu
    else
click menu item "Français" of lemenu
    end if
    click button 1 of fen
    on error
    beep 2
    end try
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
Nothing fancy here! Compile it, keep it handy (in the dock for example), and a single click does the switch for you. You can make endless variations on this, even make it look kind of smart, with dialogs and all that, thus defeating the purpose.
AppleScript support is kind of sketchy so you have to use UI programming.
    Cheers,
