Spell check sound
I have a user that has Environment > General > Check spelling before send checked. Before the user's outgoing email sends, she is prompted by the spell check window. The window is accompainied by a beep noise on her pc. She has become very annoyed with this feature. For the time being, I have disabled the spell check before send option, but is there a way to disable the noise only? Thank you for your help on this.

Not that I'm aware. You could always disconnect her PC speaker :)

Spell Check Causing Alert Sound
Ok. I have an Imac. When I am in mail and type a word incorrect I get an alert sound. I do not get the red dashed line. I have looked all over Preferences. What am I missing? This is annoying. If I do a manual spell check of a document then it still does not underline misspelled words. I tested it in Textedit as well. No red line under the words. Please help!!!
Thanks
ThomAn update. I did the 10.6.8 combo update and that seemed to fix it.
Thanks

Spell checking function?
I am familiar with spell checking since Claris Works but am having a glitch in emails, etc. From what I understand if you control click a misspelled word a list of possibles is supposed to appear. All I get is a menu to choose from that will get to suggestions in a round about way.
I thought that control clicking the highlighted word would automatically show possible suggestions without going through extra steps.
Am I doing something wrong? This discussion is getting confused. The question was about spell check but most of the discussion is about Dictionary. Command-Control-D should pop up a definition of the word the mouse is pointing at (no click needed). But the word has to be spelled right.
For spell check: Select *Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing*. If a word you type is not recognized, it should be underlined with a dashed red line. Put the mouse pointer on an underlined word. Control-Click on the word. The first item or several items in the pop-up menu should be suggested alternatives for the misspelled word.
It sounds like that is what you are expecting. Does that not work when you do as I described? -
As typing in a spell checker mode.
Is it possible to have the "red underline" also make a sound. Example, at the same time as the red is displayed, sound a "tink" or other user selectable sound.
This will alert the user to look at the screen and "delete" the misspelled item then as later. Correcting at that point then will avoid having to use the mouse to return to the error.
ThanksOh, I can toss in my two cents here.... I've used Spell Catcher Plus for years on my Window's (and feel now, that I wouldn't even want to own a computer without it). They came out now, with a Mac version (although not as good as the windows version) but that's really splitting hairs, I would suggest forgetting all about "everything else" and giving it a try... It's like one of those things were I would say "metaphorically speaking" that if you don't like it 100,000% I would pay you back the money myself... however you can try it for free at download.com - but - just to give credit where credit is do - nothing on the planet has even come close to the Searching Ability of Franklins Speaking edition "spellers" (absolutely STELLAR) I even to this day need to go use it when the spell checkers on the computer cant find my spelling mistake. Boy if I could work for spell catcher plus, Franklin dictionary, and Snagit - I would make myself the Frankenstein - the likes of which no one has ever seen.... Send mail to get Snagit to make an Apple version (I already have Snapz) Snagit rules; but I'm keeping my desktop a Windows....

Error: Could not contact spell checker
Whenever I open Keynote or any iWork application, or even text edit for that matter, I get the following error: "Could not contact spell checker."
I have looked around on other forums and I'm not the only one to have had this problem, but no working solution has been provided, as far as I can tell.
I have not installed any third-party spellcheck software such as Spell Catcher or CocoSpell. I checked my international settings anyways, and there is no evidence that such programs exist on this computer. Nor do they show up in spotlight. There is no "services" directory in my library.
I tried replacing the "en" file under the "spelling" directory with one from a leopard machine, but no use. (So I put the old one back.)
I can't seem to figure this out. It is a system-wide error that happens with every application that uses spell checker.
Any advice would be really appreciated!Try making a new user account and see if you are still having problems with spell checker with that user account. You may also want to try posting in the [MacOS 10.4|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177] area as it sounds to me like it is more of a system problem then Keynote specific.

Help please. I'm slowing switching over from using PowerPoint to Keynote 2.02. I'm having problem with spell checking. When I select check spelling from Edit menu, the (I assume) misspelled words are highlighted and underlined, but no dialog box appears with spelling suggestions or other means to correct, other than grabbing my dictionary and manually correcting the spelling error.
I've searched through the small manual and search Apple's Keynote support site. No luck.
ThanksThere are three spelling menu options from the Edit menu. It sounds like you selected the second option, which in my opinion is not very useful. Try selecting one of the other options. The first option "Edit>Spelling>Spelling..." (note the three periods) gives you a dialog box offering spelling suggestions. The third option, "Edit>Spelling>Check Spelling as You Type" will underline all of the mispeled words in red.

Hi all,
I've built an application and want to include a spellcheck
function - If I have it as a web page based app, then no problem -
I've got a cracking spellchecker application that works a treat.
BUT because of the nightmare of deploying a web based app onto
local machines due to the F8 security protocols,I'm deploying it as
a projector...but my spellchecker is web only.
Incidentally the app works offline and stores data in shared
objects, then uploads it when back online - hence the need for
local deployment.
So....Does anyone know of any spellchecker that you can
integrate into F8 projector?
Cheers
PhilYes, English is selected...but you inadvertently just gave me the solution. It turns out the document I was checking had no errors, and rather than giving me a window saying something like spell check completed, it was simply giving the error sound. I feel like a bit of an idiot, but thanks...

The Zimbra help states that I should click on Spell Check to invoke a wizard that will check the spelling of an email I am composing. I do not have a Spell Check icon. The Help also shows a shortcut to invoke what sounds like the same wizard of Alt - X. That doesn't seem to work either.
How do I check my spelling of an email I am composing, be it the intial email of a thead or a Reply or Forward?
Thanks,
Daryl
(I am using IE7. I guess if I was using Firefox, the Firefox browser would most likely do it for me, but I'd still like to understand how this is supposed to work in IE7 and why I don't have that icon.)Spell check is not currently supported in Beehive Webmail.
As you note, for Firefox, the browser has built in spell-checking. There are 3rd party plugins that provide similar features for IE, though this is outside the scope of the Beehive product itself.
Also, though it doesn't solve the specific issue, we are updating the Beehive Webmail online help to more accurately reflect the available features.

Onscreen font size for "spell check" and "font"
How do I increase the onscreen font size for "spell check" and "font"? I just tried to spell check a document and the font size was so small I can't see what it says. Also, when you click on 'font' to change it, I wish the list of fonts was larger so I could see it clearer. I have pretty good vision so it's not that, it's just the size of the font....it must be at least 6! Thanks for your help.
Hi, Diane. I don't know what sort of display you're using, but it sounds like you have a flat LCD display. At any resolution lower than its maximum, a flat-screen LCD display is always blurry, and the lower the resolution, the blurrier it is. This is because unlike a CRT display, an LCD has a fixed number of physical pixels in it that can't be changed. If you instruct it to "pretend" it has a smaller number of larger pixels by setting it for a lower resolution, each of the "pretend" pixels has to be made up of several real pixels instead of just one, and no pixel can be (for example) half white and half blue: a pixel is an indivisible unit that is always all one color. So the only way the hardware can use several pixels to represent one larger one is to gradate the colors of those pixels as best it can to approximate the intended image, and that inevitably spreads the gradation out — which is exactly what blurring is. This is just an inbuilt property of LCD displays, not a defect that needs to be (or can be) fixed. The solution is to buy a display that works well for you at its highest resolution — which will probably mean a lower-resolution display than you have now.

What the heck? Been using Pages for years, now the red underline that shows me all my misspelled words is no longer there? Help spell check!
The language of text is part of the text's formatting, it sounds like you have copied and pasted text from somewhere else eg the Internet where it has different language attributed, or None.
Select all the text and apply a language to it:
Inspector > Text > More > Language
...and in future use Paste and Match Style so that inserted text has the same attribures as the existing text you are pasting into.

No more volume click or spell check.
Sometimes after my computer has been running for a while the click that the computer makes when you raise or lower the volume stops working. Spell chick also cuts out. I know that sounds odd but that is what it is doing.
Hello Daniel:
I do not know what would cause the alert sound to stop working. In the case of spell checking, that is either on or off - again, I do not understand what would cause it to quit.
"Checking spelling as you type
In many Mac OS X applications, you can have the application automatically check your spelling as you type. When you mistype or misspell a word, it's underlined in red so you can quickly spot errors and correct them.
Open the application that you want to use and choose Edit > Spelling > "Check Spelling as You Type."
If you don't see this item in the Edit menu, the application doesn't provide the Mac OS X spell-checking feature. The application may have its own spell-checker. Look in the application's preferences or menus for a spell-checker."

No more spell check- what the heck?
Hello!
Though i am more than confident i am spelling things correctly, i notice that pages is not putting the red squiggly line under misspelled words. Anyone know why? Even when i go to spell check, it finds no misspelled words, and i misspelled some on purpose. Can this be fixed without reinstalling?
thanksIt sounds like Inspector > Text > More > Language might be set to "none."

Can i change the dictionary for spell checking
Hi,
I am using the trial version of robo help and I am testing
how the support for german is.
I changed my project to german (file / project setings /
language). The result up to now is, that there is german spell
checking, but the dictionary used doesn't know all words that I' m
using. Of course I can add word by word to the dictionory, but I
dont't like to do this hard job.
Is there a way to use the dictionary which MS Word is using,
which would be very fine for me?
If anyone can help me, thanks for this.
Kindly regards
FritzjHi all
I did a bit of digging around and here is what I've
discovered. Hopefully it will help?
I am using Word 2003, so the method outlined here is for that
version. Note that I'm not a particularly rabid Word user, as I
tend to avoid it if at all possible, so I suppose other versions
may differ. Additionally, I'm assuming here that you are referring
to the personal dictionary and not one that is supplied by virtue
of installing Word or some other component.
In Word, I located the personal dictionary. (Tools >
Options... > Spelling & Grammar tab > Custom
Dictionaries... button) This listed the "Full path" of
C:\...\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC. I find this
mildly amusing, as I can't truly see the "full path" and am left
wondering what lies between C:\ and \Application Data. I mean, ...
could be anything, no?
So on a hunch, I looked in the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\Rick Stone\Application
Data\Microsoft\Proof
As luck would have it, there was CUSTOM.DIC all big as life
and twice as natural.
Suspecting it was a simple ASCII text file as the RoboHelp
HTML personal dictionary is, I tried opening it using Windows
Notepad. Sure enough, it popped open. Seems to simply list terms
with no other information.
So at this point, we know how to access the contents of the
personal dictionary for Word 2003. Now let's look at RoboHelp HTML,
shall we?
In RoboHelp HTML, you click Tools > Spelling Options...
> Dictionaries tab. Here, you should see Personal Dictionary.tlx
listed in the left panel bearing the label of "Used dictionaries:"
(Sorta sounds like a library sale, eh?) To the right of the file
name, in the same pane, you should see the path listed. Mine reads:
file://C:/Documents and Settings/Rick Stone/Application
Data/eHelp/Lexicons/Personal Dictionary.tlx
I opened it using Windows Notepad and here is what I see:
#LID 30840
1boffo i
2xzxz azxzx
3ppp ApPp
4azx cxza
5winnie CWiNnIe
6garbo e
I have some really odd terms in there. And for good reason!
During my initial spelunking, it appears that a particular
structure is in place. So I tested by adding terms along with
different options for each term. The terms listed are matched to
the option used when you click the Modify... button on the Spelling
Options dialog.
1boffo i
1boffo is the term and the i means "No action" is the option
used for the term.
2xzxz azxzx
2xzxz is the term and the a means "Auto Change" is the option
used for the term. The zxzx following the a indicates the term to
automatically change to.
3ppp ApPp
3ppp is the term and the A means "Auto Change (Preserve
Case)" is the option used for the term. The pPp following the A
indicates the term to automatically change to.
4azx cxza
4azx is the term and the c means "Change" is the option used
for the term. The xza following the c inidicates the term to offer
to change to.
5winnie CWiNnIe
5winnie is the term and the C means "Change (Preserve Case)
is the option used for the term. The WINnie following the C
indicates the term to offer to change to.
6garbo e
6garbo is the term and the e means "Treat as misspelled" is
the option used for the term.
Sooo, having looked all that over, it would seem as simple as
copying the contents of the original Personal Dictionary from Word,
then opening the Personal Dictionary from RoboHelp HTML and pasting
the terms in. Then try modifying them a tad by inserting an "i"
following the term. I'm not sure if a tab is what was used between
the term and the i, so it may take a bit of trial and error.
Hopefully this helps a bit... Rick -

greatly be appreciated.Or, as an alternative, has anyone done any work on creating a platform
independent spell checker which would work on any Forte platform and not
require the use of any external software. Seems like there should be some
public domain dictionaries lying around; providing the ability to add to a
personal dictionary sounds easy; a browser on near matches is easy. The
only "interesting" parts that come to mind would be ways to avoid putting
all variants of a word in the dictionary, e.g., to avoid having to store
all plurals as separate words, and good algorithms for guessing at
alternative words when the word is not found.
Not only would this give you independence from what was installed on the
client, but it would give you a possible server-side version for use with
the Web.
