Spell-check without auto-correction? Why not?

Why can't we choose spell-check without auto-correction?

Steven,
As I typed that Reply, your Spellcheck thread (for the forums), came immediately to mind.
That was one of the prime motivators in wanting a dictionary, that could be customized.
Over the years, I have migrated my WordPerfection dictionary through several versions, 'cause I have added a ton of wine, food, video and photo terms, and would hate to have to redo all of those, especially the ones using multi-national characters.
Yeah, maybe inclusion of "Photoshop," "Premiere," "InDesign," etc., etc., would be expected, or at least hoped for.

  • Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
    ("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
(I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
"Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.

  • Greek Spell Check and Auto-Correction

Hi, I want to know if I can add a Greek dictionary that will have the same features as the English Language has on Lion.
Why Apple didn't integrate such a simple thing. To make every user from different places in the world to have the convenience of Auto-Correction they have on iOS on OS X too. Greek Auto-Correction exist on iOS why not on Lion?

    Yes, see
    http://m10lmac.blogspot.com/2011/06/extra-spell-checking-dictionaries-for.html
Nobody can tell you why Apple hasn't included some feature that you want, but you can ask them for it here:

  • How to use spell checker without mouse?

    Hi,
how to use spell checker without mouse?
And how to quickly change between languages related to documents, and be able to quickly get back to the main language setting that should be the default for the system?

And how to quickly change between languages related to documents
If you are talking about input keyboards, this is controlled by shortcuts that are explained at the top right of system prefs/language & text/input sources.

  • Despite my spell check being set, it does not work in Hotmail and some other websites.

I have the setting for spell check set up but it does not work on some sites like hotmail. I go to the spell check button in hotmail and it tells me that my browser will automatically check as I type but it doesn't. I've searched to override this or to get the spelling checked independently but without any luck, Any suggestions?

Not all locales come with a dictionary installed for licensing reasons.
If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions).
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the ''Languages'' submenu.
Also make sure that [[X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.
You can also try to toggle the "Check Spelling" item off and on again.

  • Spell check in Mavericks mail does not work properly

If I spell check on sending (seems a sensible idea) and want to make tweaks in the actual e-mail as well, the email will send mid spell check and tweaks - without full spell check and often half written corrections
This is an ongoing problem in other threads
Being bilingual (fluent in Mac and PC), this is definitely a Apple Mail problem and something those smart people at Apple should be able to fix.

  • Spell check in Mail and Safari not working

Since I've upgraded to 10.5.1 spell check no longer works in mail. It does not underline any incorrect spellings. Also in Safari 3.0.4, when I fill out forms and make a misspelling, spellcheck will underline the word but when I right click on it I do not get the contextural menu to correct it. The misspelled work just highlights and then the red undeline disappears leaving the incorrect spelling intact. How can I get spell check working correctly?
    Thanks,
    Pat

This is a fairly old thread. Did the OP's (Patrick) problem go away? Was there a solution?
If you control-click in a new message, is Spelling and Grammar in the pop-up context? Can you select it? If you do, does it find misspelt words? If you deliberately misspell a word, put the insertion point in the middle of it and then control-click, does the pop-up offer a list of alternatives?

  • Wintertree Spell Checker modification for IR/Complaint Notes

    Hello,
We are at CRM 5.0 and SP 15. We use IE 6.0. I would like to know if SAP Note 1083520 can be extended to implement Spell Checker functionality in views other than Email editor that the note is specifically meant for.
In other words, has anyone ever tried to implement the software by modifying the provided Javascript and or .class files to use in other scenarios like Complaint Notes/ IRs etc?. Will SAP support the solution in this case?.
    Please help!!!

  • TS3276 Spell checker on Mail and Pages not working.

I have lost the capacity to check spelling on all Apple programs. I deleted Mac Keeper as I read this had caused the problem, but still no spell checker. Can anyone assist?

    Hey Vic,
If the problem was indeed with MacKeeper, then you might need to reinstall your OS. Assuming you've got a good backup, it should be pretty easy to do—either redownload the software from the Mac App Store and follow the instructions (if you upgraded) or boot into Recovery Mode and do it from there.
If I were you, I'd probably do a little sleuthing first. If you go into System Preferences> Language & Text, does everything seem to be configured properly? Is English the top language under the "Language" tab? Under the "Text" tab, is "Spelling" toggled to "Automatic by Language"? If you misspell a word in Mail and press Command-; (the shortcut for Edit> Spelling and Grammar> Check Document Now), does anything happen?
If everything seems OK, I'd probably just reinstall.

  • ITunes organizes albums/artists starting with 'The' correctly, why not 'A'?

I am very picky about how my music in iTunes is organized. One thing that I really like about iTunes is that it actually alphabetizes albums and artists beginning with 'The' as they should be. I loathe when a media player does not do this.
However, while iTunes does organize 'The' correctly, it does not organize 'A' correctly. For example, I am ripping the artist A Silver Mt. Zion onto my computer. The band name is A Silver Mt. Zion, and it'd feel wrong if I didn't have the 'A' there. However, this makes it organized incorrectly--it should be under 'S', not 'A'.
Is there a way I could at least fake iTunes into putting it under 'S'? I don't like it at the top, but also don't like it without the real band name.

I checked with the Genius Bar.  It was a new dilema to the lady that was helping me.  She took it to a back room and worked on it but it came out the same.  She gave me some options for repair or credit for replacement.
I just kept the phone and put up with slowly charging it by plugging it in and then turning it off.
I couldn't transfer anything from itunes.
I finally got fed up and bought a new charging port for $10. and a toolkit for $3.  I looked up a video on youTube for the replacement and did it.
That solved all the problems, it was the charging port, must have been some bad pins or something because it patially worked.

  • Macbook pro purchased new summer 2009: anxious to upgrade to snow leopard: ANYONE ever install without backup?   Why not?

Any body do this without timemachine backup successfuly?

im sure they have, but you are risking losing all your data if you do not have a backup.  Something could go wrong during the upgrade.  If the possibility of losing all your data is acceptable, then proceed.  I highly recommend backing up first.

  • Auto-correcting keyboard not in touch?

I was just reading the review in Ars Technica, when I noticed this:
"If you're new to the iPod touch/iPhone keyboarding experience, it's really not difficult to master. If your dexterity score is in the single digits, using the keyboard may be a bit on the difficult side, but with a little care and persistence, you should be able to master it. *The spiffy text-correction feature from the iPhone is missing on the iPod touch, however.*"
Is that true? Could someone please provide some rationale to the thought-process that determines what features get axed and what do not? I still maintain that ther's no real need to remove ANY software-features when compared to the iPhone, yet here we are. Apple is really starting to push it, we are nearing the threshold where touch transforms from a great mediaplayer in to artificially crippled and watered-down iPhone....

that was actually a thread I started . It's a good thing that that particular claim was shot down quick.

  • Pages useless without auto correct.

I use Word to compose office reports, use over 1000 autocorrect abbreviations,
long medical terms. Pages useless for this without it.

Several users here have had very positive things to say about TextExpander. You can download a trial to see if it meets your needs.

  • How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

I do not believe this.. you can not disable auto correct without disabling the spell checker.. I am struck dumb by this.. I recently bought a mac for the first time.. ive always used windows.. there are more thngs like this than i expected.. I actually find this so ignorant I am lost for words.. this auto correct is a nightmare for me.. and has already caused me a lot of trouble because I have sent emails where words have been changed and i didnt notice and I have unknowingly insulted people.. i use a regular spell checker quite often but apparently I simply have no choice with safari.. oh well I am going to have to find another browser then.. goodbye safari!.. I also use a lot of shortened words and names etc etc.. like for eg I used the shortened word for problems "probs" and it changes it to "probe" and then i go back and change it back to WHAT I WANT TO SAY and it changes it AGAIN!!!!
Does anyone else feel like this is yet another example of how, more and more, we are being treated like morons?
Ok I'll try to stop ranting.. the real point is it should be possible to have a spell checker without auto correct..

  • No auto-complete, correct, or spell check

Just gettin started with my TouchPad, but I can't seem to get any typing functions to work.  There is no spell checking, no auto-complete, and no auto-correct (e.g. "you" for "u").  I have enabled everything I can find.  What am I missing?  My software updated itself yesterday so I am hopefully running the latest, but still nothing.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

When I open Text Assist options, then "edit user dictionary", there is a tab for shortcuts, which are essentially user-defined auto-corrections, like you for u, or I'm for im, etc.  There were several already in there and I added my own.  They don't work either.
