Spell checker question

The text I'm entering on a particular forum is not being checked for spelling errors. A member of that forum said it didn't have a spell checker and he used an add on for his browser which was internet explorer. Is there a similar add-on for Firefox?
Thanks. Jim B.

"Not all locales come with a dictionary installed due to licensing reasons." Could this be the problem?
The English (United States) version has a dictionary installed by default. Regardless of your Firefox language, if you want more dictionaries, the aforementioned article explains how to add them.

When I right click on the box, I see the check spelling option has a check mark next to it but it doesn't seem to be working.
Does the forum in question have a Reply box that is accessible to unregistered users? If so, could you post a link to the page?

  • Spell checking question

I have Mail set to automatically check spelling before it sends an email. Currently, Mail starts checking after where the cursor is positioned (so after what I just typed) and checks all the content in the message. In long threads, where messages have a lot of quoted text, it's a huge pain to have to keep clicking "ignore" as it works it's way through the quoted text -- after all, how asinine is it to correct past exchanges in the thread?
So my question is: is there a way to have Mail start its auto spell-check at the beginning of an email, regardless of where the cursor is, and only check text with a quote level of zero?
    Thanks.

It doesn't do what you want, but ...
I have it set to check as I type, so it just underlines in red whatever it finds. I can then choose to fix it or ask it (control-click the underlined word) or ignore it without having the prompt appearing on every error.

  • RoboHelp 7 Spell Check question

    Hi,
I am new to these forums and new to the support of RoboHelp 7. I have a client who reports the following problem with RoboHelp 7. Not having used the applicaiton, I do not no the best course of action to resolver her problem.
Spell-check pops up and it does not go away. In most cases she kept cancelling out and it eventually went away. There are error messages.
This is on a laptop running Windows XP SP2 and is up to date with all OS Security updates.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
    Jim

    Hi again
I suppose it may be worth checking to ensure that one of the following isn't happening.
She may be inadvertently typing the key sequence used to initiate Spell Check (Normally the keystrokes that would cause this are: (F7 to check Spelling Shift+F7 to use Thesaurus))
In Adobe RoboHelp HTML version 7, we are able to customize the accelerator keys assigned to different actions. She may need to ensure a variation of accelerator key hasn't been assigned.
Perhaps this key sequence has been changed to a different combination.
    To check the settings:
Right-click the toolbars and choose Customize.
    The Customize dialog should open.
Click the Keyboard tab and choose the Tools category.
Click each of the Spell options and examine the Current Assignments.
You may wish to simply take the shotgun approach and click the Reset All button.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Pages Spell checking

I was not sure about it, but I saw that sometimes a sentence would have a marked phrase, and Proofread would stop at it, and the only context option is "Never Hyphenate". There was not hyphen involved.
So I did a test. I typed the a few sentences in, all of which had grammar problems in the competing wordprocessor.
    None caught in Pages:
I ran good in the race.
    There house was big.
    That ship was their.
This is unfortunate if Apple does not have decent grammar/spell checking.

Question asked and responded many times.
The spell checker behavior is ruled by the language setting applying to the pieces of text.
Given what you describe, I assumes that some pieces of text are set as "use oneLanguage" and others ar set to "none".
You may check that in the Text Inspector, open the tab entitled "More" and look the setting of the menu item entitled "Language".
If you grabbed some pieces of text from .txt files or from files coming from windowLand, it's not surprising if they don't have a language defined.

  • This is a test of mark as question from Spell Check.

This is marked as a question in the main form. I will go to spell check and submit from there. If it isn't marked as a question it is because that setting doesn't persist to the spell check form and subsequent submittal. If that is the case how do we get that fixed?

    Hi Doug,
Yes it is. The workaround is that one can go into the post and set the flag again.
I know this is not great, but works until we find the time to change it.
    Best, Mark.

  • Please move the 'SEND' and 'SPELL CHECK' options away from each other, and when sending, ask the question, 'Are you sure you want to send now?' Thanks

The send and spell check options are next to each other. I can not tell you how many times I hit the send button be accident. When sending, and question of 'Are you sure you want to send now?', should be asked.
    Thanks

Actually, unless something has changed, you can set Thunderbird to run an automatic spell check when you click Send. That might be your best workaround.
Tools menu > Options > Composition panel > Spelling mini-tab
(You can display the classic menu bar by tapping the Alt key)
It might also be possible to customize the toolbar, but I think this might be safer.
Regarding a general confirmation for sending, I noticed some add-ons for that, but I don't have any personal recommendations.

  • Automatically spell check these "submit my question to the cmmunity"

Automatically spell check these the questions to the community like Google does.  Google provides alternative searches when you misspell a word in the search.  Would seem reasonable for Apple too.
This cam to my attention when I accidentally misspelled community in my prior post about Mac OS X Technologies.
    Robert

If by the 'normal' spell checker you mean the one built into OS X, you can use it in the regular (non-html) editor modes. First, make sure it is turned on in the browser app's Edit menu > Spelling and Grammar > "Check Spelling While Typing" menu item. That will underline potential misspellings in red, just like for other apps that support system-wide text services.
It's not working for me. I have the spell checker turned on in TenFourFox 4.0.1.  This is a ported version of Firefox 4.x.  Interesting enough I got spell checking turned on by control click > check spelling. I see that check spelling is now checked in the control click box. Now, I have html & TenFourFox underlined in red dots.
Do you get the underlining to work in other browser without this maneuver?
The trick is you can't access the OS X popup contextual menu with a right click on the underlined word because that brings up the ASC insert/align menu. But you can do it with a control click. This is because of a quirk of the software running the site, which is neither developed by Apple nor platform specific.
There is a way of injecting javascript into a page.  I bet you could zap away the forum right click via the injected javascript.

  • I can't use word because a box keeps popping up saying that it can't find the spell check files?

I open Word and there is a pop-up message saying that word cannot start the spelling checker because the files may be missing and to make sure that the spell checker files are installed or use the Microsoft installer to install spell checker. I have never had this problem with Word before and spell check has always been fine. What should I do?

Since word is made by Microsoft you should post your question on their own forums for their Mac software as Apple Communities only provide support for Apple products:

  • Why is my spell checker not working in a document using Word 2003

I have a word document in Word 2003  .   I was altering it and noticed that from page 3 to 6 the spell checker does not work.
I transferred the pages into another another file still didn't work .  Just copied a paragraph still didn't work.  So I then started typing the rest of the document into another file and straight away it underlined my spelling mistakes in red.
So why not in these few pages of my document.
This is a paragraph from the pages below.  I altered some words deliberately to see if my Word 2003 would pick them up.  It didn't.
The landlord shall be entitiled to pursue the tenant for any reasonable costs incurred as a result of the tenant’s faulure to pay rent including but not limited to any charges for returned cheques or any reasonable costs incurred
in pursuing the tenant for payment of unpaid rent.
But when I put it in here it does pick them up.  So it is something I have done .

  • Since upgrading to ios5 spell check no longer works on my iPad 2

I have tried turning spell check off and on again and rebooting the iPad but that did not help, what am I supposed to do? Reinstall ios5 because it took me 8 hours the first time round I'm not going through that again.

I have not used the Support Communities before... meaning we pay our med care to answer Apple questions? And where is that answer or at least the... "we are working on it... " comment from Apple. The first post is OCTOBER how is that possible?? Did you see the last quarter Apple profits?
Anyway I too have that problem... where is the red line? Maybe the promotion of writing errors and dumbing us down is... the goal? Obviously with the iPad "keyboard" the redline is needed and how was it left out in the first place?? Hope there is not some simple tick we are all missing... .

  • Spell Check is not working, still......

Another long time user that has been with you for years has had enough, over to Opera where I can write an email without looking like an unprofessional <!-- dipshit --> dummy that can't even use spell checker.
Linux mint 14, fully updated, two different pc's both same problem with spellchecker, this problem has been going on for a long time now. Do you really expect people to use a browser without a spellcheck? This has been a 'bug' for how long now? People just go elsewhere, why wouldn't you, try running a business and sending people sketchy looking emails.
I fix PC's for a living, I used to put everybody onto Thunderbird and Firefox, do you think I still do that? Obviously like the people I know who do the same thing for a living, I put them onto Chrome so they don't ring me complaining that it doesn't work properly.
You guys are loosing market share for a reason, we need a functional non bloated browser that doesn't freeze and crash all the time, <!-- fuck --> forget the fancy add-ons and themes, make the <!-- fucking thing --> basics work because from the techiest person to the most useless pleb luddite, we all need the basics to work or the browser is a useless piece of <!-- shit --> crap.
This site is proof of how you are alienating people too, I go to register and it tells me I don't need to register for a new question, I click on that and half way through it asks me to register, then when registering it took about 6 tries for your javascript to accept it: "username too short", "password is short", "username exists". Tell us before ffs! I nearly gave up and shut the window. Anybody unfamiliar with pc's would have given up after a try or two and gone back to IE.
Please, please, get your <!-- shit --> stuff together, I love Mozilla and I love Firefox, it's named after my favourite baddies in the original Donkey Kong, ffs, I love you guys, get back to basics and make a functional browser that people prefer to IE, you are killing it, get back to basics and make it FUNCTIONAL

I had this problem too, spell check stopped working, I presume after an update. The solution is to add a dictionary, which you can by going to
    [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/ Firefox language Tools]
Though why this link is not on the same option tab as the spell check checkbox is beyond me. It appears that if your locale is US, Firefox is supposed to load the US dictionary, otherwise none. Pretty dumb, eh?

  • Set spell check language to British once and for all...

I know this question has been asked a few times before but I just cannot fix it on my iMac or MBP. I am running Snow Leopard (still too scared to upgrade to Lion) and want to globally change my spell-check to British.
I have tried everything. Every option in the System Preferences where I can change the language to British I have done and also changed the preferences in each application by right-clicking the underlined text, selecting 'spelling and gramma' and setting the dropdown to British English. All to no avail. As soon as I go back to TextEdit or something and type 'colour' it's telling me to change it to 'color'. Infuriating!
Does anyone have any clue? The irony is that I managed to make it work as I wanted (no American spellings) on my old MacBook running Snow Leopard but just can't on my newer computers.
    Many thanks

  • Spell check function in my iworks pages does not work, how do I fix this?

I have a new IMac (intel) and I am struggling learning to use the ipage part of the iwork suite.  There does not appear to be a spell check feature working, since I'm trying to create some new documents, this is a real hassle.  And does anyone know how to do a cut and paste of images from the web.  I'm doing a presentation, have permission to use the photos and can't get it to work!!  sigh  I beginning to think I should have paid the xtra bucks and bought the window suite version, at least I know where they hid the bells and whistles in that one.
Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Greetings,
For questions on Pages post in the Pages forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/iwork/pages
-- You can read about the various spell check features in Pages by typing in the word "spelling" in the Pages help menu.  This entry should get Spell check up and running for you: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Pages/4.0/en/sl150c96ab.html
If there is an image on a website you want to use locally on your computer usually just dragging the image from the web page anywhere on your desktop is enough to copy the image.  You can then drag the image from the desktop anywhere you want.
Alternatively you can right-click (or hold down the control key and regular click on the image) on the image and then choose "Copy Image.  You can then perform an Edit > Paste into a Pages document for example.
    Hope that helps.

  • How do you spell check a field?

How are people spell checking their fields?
In searching around, I have only found (a) suggestions to yank the text into MS Word, do a spell check, then yank the resulting text into the field; (b) software from DC AL CODA that we aren't clear how they actually work (http://www.dcalcoda.com).
Specifically, my manager wants a tool that'll interface with Oracle like this: give a table name and a field name and be asked about each spelling error, much like an email spell check. The tool would change things as you ask, directly in the database. You wouldn't have to cut and paste into it and back to the db fields.
We aren't using forms. We use SQL*Plus, Quest Software's TOAD, and our own Java servlets (using JDBC to enter SQL statements).
I would love to hear how people do their spell checking.
Hopefully this is an appropriate forum for this question. There doesn't seem to be a general or SQL forum. Our database tables include a fair amount of text that shows up on Web pages. These are the fields we want to spell check.

I thought I'd reply to my own question since I found a workable solution, at least for our office which has MS Windows.
MS Access can connect directly to an Oracle data source. Access has a spell checking feature where you can select a field and spell check it. Below are tips and instructions for doing this.
    TIPS:
It's surely a good idea to back up tables and be the only person or process changing those tables during the spell check.
One thing to watch for is whether the entire table comes in. At the bottom of the screen is a >* button which seems to get all fields. For large tables, you have to hit this button before you get the entire table.
Another glitch is that all of the given database user's tables show up in one list box -- makes for some painful scrolling, but all of the tables are listed.
A much smaller glitch is that if you widened any of the fields in the view of the table, when you close the window, it asks if you want to save the formatting. It has nothing to do with saving the data (that is automatic). It's safe to say no.
    The spell check doesn't recognize HTML tags (asks about "br"s from <br> tags) but seems to know to ignore things like &quot;
How to set up an ODBC Data Source in Windows:
    1. MS Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> ODBC Data Sources (32 bit)
    2. Drivers tab, scroll down and select Oracle ODBC Driver
    3. OK
    4. User DSN tab, Add...
    5. Select Oracle ODBC Driver and Finish
    6. Make up a data source name (example: src)
    7. Enter a description for it
    8. For Service name, put what your service name is (for an SQL*Plus connection, 'usr/passwd@svc', this is 'svc')
    9. For UserID, put your user id (for an SQL*Plus connection, 'usr/passwd@svc', this is 'usr')
    10. Ignore the rest of the fields, click OK
    11. Another OK.
How to use Access to Spell Check an ODBC Data Source Field:
    0. Install Access from (MS Office 2000).
    1. Start Access (by the way, you might find it way down the list in Start -> Programs).
    2. Open file, in the file type box, scroll to the end: ODBC Databases. You'll get a dialog.
    3. Machine Data Source tab, select the name you gave it (src in step 6 above)
    4. You'll be prompted for the password (for an SQL*Plus connection, 'usr/passwd@svc', this is 'passwd')
    5. Select from the huge list of every table the table you want. Ok.
5.a. If the table has no key, you'll be prompted for the unique key from a list of all fields.
    6. Double click the item that has just been added to the dialog that remains on the screen. It'll have a globe next to text like USR_TABLENAME. This brings up a randomly sized first chunk of the table.
    7. To make sure you get the entire table, on the paging buttons on the bottom (|< < > >| >*), click >*. It may take a few moments to get a huge table.
    8. Click the heading of the field (column) you want to spell check). This selects the entire column.
    9. Hit spell check (ABC checkmark tool or Tools -> Spelling)
    10. Check away. The changes are made immediately to the database.
    11. Close the table display window.

  • How do i remove a word from spell check in OS X 10.4?

Hi all, I accidentally added a misspelled word to the spell check dictionary and i was wondering how to remove it.
I noticed there were already a few similar questions, but i could not get their solutions to work, as they were obviously using a new version of OS X.
So does anyone know how to remove a word from from spell check in OS x 10.4? or else how to reset the spell check?
    Cheers.

OK, if you are talking about the Apple spell checker, do the following:
Open an application like TextEdit.  Right click in the application window and you will get a popup.  Select Spelling and then Spelling... to get a Spelling Dialog Box.
Type in the mis-spelled word in the text box and then click the Forget button.  That should undo the mischief.
