  • Croatian (or any foreign language) spell check and dictionary

What do people from non-english speaking countries do with OS X's limited dictionary.app?
I am specifically talking about the Croatian language (Hrvatska), although would be happy to hear from anybody from any country on how they solved the dictionary/spell check issue for their own language.
I am struggling to find a list of Apple Dictionary.app plugins or extra dictionaries to install.
Now I know MS Office 08 has a Croatian dictionary (altho I can't really get it working) but what about native OS X apps?
I have found a 3rd party solution called CocoAspell (free) but am having limited success with it.
I would even be prepared to build a Croatian dictionary plugin for Dictionary.app if somebody could link me to some sort of instruction set.
I'm surprised Apple have not gone to the trouble of building more dictionaries for Dictionary.app
What do Russians, Chinese, Hungarian, Brazilian, Italian eetc etc do when they want a spell checker / dictionary for their language? Buy MS Office 08???
How does Apple resolve this issue (esp the spell checking) in apps like Pages?
In my hours of research into this area it is clear Apple have not really addressed this issue despite the fact it would be so easy for them to solve.
Can anybody help me out / point me in the right direction?
    thanks

As a matter of fact I found the working Cro dictionary at the same ftp link you provide above shortly before you posted it. Nevertheless your great efforts are fully credited. Thanks for your excellent assistance!
I have also been in contact with the developer of Dictionary Cleaner who tells me the 2.0 verison of his software will be able to import comma separated txt wordlists. Nice.
Good as CocoAspell is I feel Apple should already have integrated this functionality, together with downloadable dictionaries from their site, into OS X.
I was unable to get a working Cro dictionary, or Custom dictionary, working in Office 08 for Mac. Interstingly the windows veriosn of the product offers the full gamet of proofing and spelling tools for the Croatian language (and manay, many others).
So both Apple and Microsoft are guilty of letting down their International customers. I am unimpressed by both. How difficult would it be for Apple to add better sprell checking and MS to port their proofing tools for office to the Mac version.
For the record (and MBU developers): When you change the language in Office 2008 for Mac to Croatian (and prob many of the other languages in the list) ALL the spell checking stops and any Custom Dictionaries are ignored.
Switching back to English restores spell checking but then the Custom Dictionary is opened with Roman text encoding and all the special letters in the Croatian alphabet are ignored, thus rendering the Custom Dictioanry list only 30% effective since 70% of the words in the language contain special characters.
The develoepr of Dictionary Cleaner should consider these sorts of problems regarding the text encoding of word lists.
Finally I'd just like to mention the confusing nature of Croatian text encoding:
The 'input menu' tab of the international System Preference pane would seem to imdicate Croatian is Unicode. Although encoding text files in Unicode-8 mangles the characters. As it does too using another text encoding called Croatian (Mac OS). The encoding that actually works is Central European (Windows Latin 2). Go figure.
If anybody knows anything about the subject of text encoding I'd love to know more. Useful links also welcome
So in conclusion - Come on Apple!, sort it out with interbational sprell check.
p.s. more downloadable non-English dictionaries for Dictionary.app too please!

  • Spell Check - new dictionary

    Hi,
It there any way how to add new spell chcek dictionary to RH 9 ? I am missing Slovak language

No that can't be done. The issue is that there are a whole series of language files in RoboHelp (e.g. stop list, ignore words, synonyms, etc.). May I suggest you put in a request for Slovakian via the wish list. You can access it here.

  • Can't find the System spell checker custom dictionary

    There's no /user/library/spelling.
Opened textedit and misspelled a few words.
    Right click - Learn Spelling.
Red squigglies go away so it learned the word.
Looked for any file modified at this time and nothing shows up.
    Where's the custom spelling dictionary?
Tried a different user and it's there.

And you've rebooted so we know it isn't like in a Cache?
    I'd get EasyFind...
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/
Add a unique spelling to the Dctionary, like QwertyChrisCA, then search for File Contents of QwertyChrisCA.

  • Strange spell-checking Wikipedia/dictionary/Google box pops up in text boxes

I'm not really sure how to describe this... if I'm typing in a text box such as the one I'm using to type this - this has happened on Tumblr and AOL Mail most frequently - occasionally, and seemingly randomly, a box will pop up on the right side of the text box. It's almost like another frame overlaying the inside of the text box... I tried to get it to pop up purposefully so I could take a screenshot but every time I managed it I accidentally clicked inside the text box and the mysterious box disappeared.
The box seems to be some sort of dictionary service. Sometimes it shows links to Wikipedia or Google, and sometimes it shows a dictionary site that I can't remember the name of but have never heard of otherwise.
When the box pops up, after I click back inside the text box and it goes away, everything seems normal, but if you look at the sent message, it'll have this text at the bottom, as if it's an artifact the mystery box left behind:
"WikipediaWictionaryChambers (UK)Google imagesGoogle defineThe Free DictionaryJoin exampleWordNetGoogleUrban DictionaryAnswers.comrhymezone.comMerriam-Webster<>0wvcidfjoguarm"
The box seems to pop up when I double click on a word or something of the likes. As I said, I couldn't quite figure out how to make it show up on purpose.
I don't have any plugins installed that I think would do this, and I'm most definitely spyware and adware free. I've had this popping up in Firefox for a VERY long time now.
As I was typing this out, I took a little Tumblr break and the box popped up. I've taken a screenshot, here it is: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/shiverstheninja/weirdbox.png

I just typed out a long e-mail and the box didn't pop up, so it doesn't ''seem'' to be happening in safe mode. However, I've typed out plenty of long e-mails without the box popping up just due to random happenstance. I really don't know what causes it to show up, it seems to be a keystroke or a certain way of clicking but as I said I can't seem to make it happen on purpose.
I know I can't be the only person who has this happening, as I can Google the artifact it leaves behind (all the names of the search engines and such) and see that other people have accidentally posted it as well, leading me to believe the box popped up for them and left that text behind and they did not realize it happened. (You don't realize it happens before you hit the post button because that text does not show up until the post has actually been sent through.)

  • Spell Check Box stays up even after sending mail.

Lion truly has some bugs. More annoyances, which is what bugs are I guess. I noticed that in Mail now, after you hit send and cycle through all the spell check changes, the spell check box remains open, even after you've sent the email off. I know it's just one click to close it, but it makes you think the mail didn't get sent. It's so more official when everything just closes up, you know? Am I being too picky here?

yep same here, my spell check box stays open - any fixes?

  • Can i change the dictionary for spell checking

    Hi,
I am using the trial version of robo help and I am testing
how the support for german is.
I changed my project to german (file / project setings /
language). The result up to now is, that there is german spell
checking, but the dictionary used doesn't know all words that I' m
using. Of course I can add word by word to the dictionory, but I
dont't like to do this hard job.
Is there a way to use the dictionary which MS Word is using,
which would be very fine for me?
If anyone can help me, thanks for this.
    Kindly regards
    Fritzj

    Hi all
I did a bit of digging around and here is what I've
    discovered. Hopefully it will help?
I am using Word 2003, so the method outlined here is for that
version. Note that I'm not a particularly rabid Word user, as I
tend to avoid it if at all possible, so I suppose other versions
may differ. Additionally, I'm assuming here that you are referring
to the personal dictionary and not one that is supplied by virtue
of installing Word or some other component.
In Word, I located the personal dictionary. (Tools >
Options... > Spelling & Grammar tab > Custom
Dictionaries... button) This listed the "Full path" of
    C:\...\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC. I find this
mildly amusing, as I can't truly see the "full path" and am left
wondering what lies between C:\ and \Application Data. I mean, ...
    could be anything, no?
So on a hunch, I looked in the following location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Rick Stone\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Proof
As luck would have it, there was CUSTOM.DIC all big as life
    and twice as natural.
Suspecting it was a simple ASCII text file as the RoboHelp
HTML personal dictionary is, I tried opening it using Windows
Notepad. Sure enough, it popped open. Seems to simply list terms
    with no other information.
So at this point, we know how to access the contents of the
personal dictionary for Word 2003. Now let's look at RoboHelp HTML,
    shall we?
In RoboHelp HTML, you click Tools > Spelling Options...
    > Dictionaries tab. Here, you should see Personal Dictionary.tlx
listed in the left panel bearing the label of "Used dictionaries:"
(Sorta sounds like a library sale, eh?) To the right of the file
name, in the same pane, you should see the path listed. Mine reads:
    file://C:/Documents and Settings/Rick Stone/Application
    Data/eHelp/Lexicons/Personal Dictionary.tlx
I opened it using Windows Notepad and here is what I see:
    #LID 30840
    1boffo i
    2xzxz azxzx
    3ppp ApPp
    4azx cxza
    5winnie CWiNnIe
    6garbo e
I have some really odd terms in there. And for good reason!
During my initial spelunking, it appears that a particular
structure is in place. So I tested by adding terms along with
different options for each term. The terms listed are matched to
the option used when you click the Modify... button on the Spelling
    Options dialog.
    1boffo i
1boffo is the term and the i means "No action" is the option
    used for the term.
    2xzxz azxzx
2xzxz is the term and the a means "Auto Change" is the option
used for the term. The zxzx following the a indicates the term to
    automatically change to.
    3ppp ApPp
3ppp is the term and the A means "Auto Change (Preserve
Case)" is the option used for the term. The pPp following the A
indicates the term to automatically change to.
    4azx cxza
4azx is the term and the c means "Change" is the option used
for the term. The xza following the c inidicates the term to offer
    to change to.
    5winnie CWiNnIe
5winnie is the term and the C means "Change (Preserve Case)
is the option used for the term. The WINnie following the C
indicates the term to offer to change to.
    6garbo e
6garbo is the term and the e means "Treat as misspelled" is
the option used for the term.
Sooo, having looked all that over, it would seem as simple as
copying the contents of the original Personal Dictionary from Word,
then opening the Personal Dictionary from RoboHelp HTML and pasting
the terms in. Then try modifying them a tad by inserting an "i"
following the term. I'm not sure if a tab is what was used between
the term and the i, so it may take a bit of trial and error.
Hopefully this helps a bit... Rick

  • I can't change the spell check to UK English

On a Mac with an existing CS6 InDesign document, I have tried everything to change the spell check to use a UK language, e.g., I want "programme", not "program".
    1. Before I open the document, I have selected InDesign/Preferences/Dictionary and changed to English: UK language.
    2. Once the document is opened:
      - I have changed all the paragraph styles (Advanced Character Formats) to English: UK language;
      - I have no Character Styles so nothing to change there;
      - I have gone to Edit/Spelling/User Dictionary and changed language to English: UK.
When I open Edit/Spelling/Check Spelling, the language is set to English: UK. But when I start to spell check, it doesn't pick up any of the words that I know need changing for UK English (i.e., programme, not program)!
Help! What else can I do?

The Australian dictionary is just the British Dictionary renamed, it doesn't recognise any Aussie words that aren't included in the British version.
Don't know why Apple even bothered except to pat us on the head and pretend they cared.
Languages btw are applied like any other style like bold or color or font. You select the text you want to be something and apply the Language.

  • How do I change the default language for the spell checker? - solved, sort of...

As the previous thread was closed without actual resolution - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/941350?esab=a&s=&r=0&as=s
I managed to solve this on my end by just reinstalling firefox using the localisation of the default dictionary language i wanted from here - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
A bit of a shame that the main download page doesnt select the geographically relevant localisation for you and even more so that changing the default language for the in built spell checker is so kak. oh well.

  • Dictionary for spell checking

    Hi,
why can't I change the dictionary that Pages uses for spell checking as I can in any other application?
    Best Regards,
    Michael

    Dear Foretcalme,
I was reading your post and looked for the pull-down menu you mentioned for changing the language of the text. At first I had the same problem you had, I would change it from one language to another and it would switch back when I went back to the document. Then I realized that you need to select text in your document and THEN change the language. Think of it like bold. You have to bold text. If you just bold where the cursor is, nothing gets bolded. I hope that makes sense. When I did that all the red marks went away and it was able to correct spelling in the correct language.
This method is actually better because then you could select some text in the document and set it to one language and select other text in the same document and set it to another language. Multiple languages in the same document and the spelling dictionaries take it all in stride. It is actually very useful.
    Hope this helps.

  • Spell checker/dictionary in iPad 2?

    Hello,
I bought iPad2 in the UK, about a week ago and would like to activate the French dictionary/spell checker.  I have tried changing the language to French and the keybourd to French but this doesn't seem to work.  Any idead please?
    Thank you
    John

    Hey,
do you have two or more keyboards/keyboardlanguages activated in the system? If so you have to "click" the sort of globe on the keyboard to change between the keyboards.
    Maybe that helps.
And don't forget to activate the spell checker in the preferences. (general -> keyboard)

  • I use MSN Hotmail for my email. Why do I no longer have the spell check option with Firefox. Do I need to download a dictionary? How do I do this?

When I have typed an email and press spell check it sayed that browser will check it for me. When I tested it the spelling mistake was left uncheck by MSN Hotmail and or Firefox. Which?
How do I get the spell check to work?

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
    * You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
    * Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
    * Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
    * Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
You can look here for dictionaries:
