Spell checking dictionary -oops, added a misspelled word I didn't mean to

Ooops. When I selected a word that was misspelled and selected the options menu, I accidentally clicked "Add to Dictionary" instead of the correct suggestion. How do I get back into the database and clear that out?
Thanks.
MC

From Spelling and Grammar help:
"If you accidentally add a misspelled word to the dictionary, type the misspelling in the Spelling and Grammar window and click Ignore, or Control-click the misspelling and choose Unlearn Spelling from the shortcut menu."
I believe there is also a TextEdit editable file in home/Library/Spelling where you can find and delete the offending string of characters.

Is it possible to change the spell check dictionary in “pages for iPad” from Spanish to UK English?  The app was purchased in Spain and I am living in spain temporarily

Spell checking should be based on the keyboard layout that you've got selected in Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards - if you have an English 'UK keyboard' selected then the spell checking should be English

  • Is there a way for the basic ENGLISH spell check dictionary to auto update? Its really annoying to have to update the spellcheck dictionary everytime FF updates

Every time FF updates, it forces me to download and install the spell check dictionary for English. It makes me just choose to use another browser since more often than not its opening facebook and I like spell check when I use fb. Is there any solution?

What Firefox locale do you use?
Is that the en-US version or another locale like the French locale?
You shouldn't lose installed dictionaries and other installed extensions when you update Firefox unless you would reset Firefox or a new profile got created for other reasons like problem with the profiles.ini file.
Are there otherwise problems with updating that you notice?
Note that in case you do not need all four French dictionaries then you can remove others and only keep the ones you need.
You can find the dictionary files in the dictionaries folder of the extension in the extensions folder in the Firefox profile folder or possibly in the Firefox program folder if you use a French Firefox locale (don't know if that locale includes a dictionary).
    *[email protected]
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • How can add Greek Language to spell-checking dictionary?

How can I add a new language in the spell-checking dictionary that is not the given options, specifically Greek?
And if there is a way can I do it to other applications as well (Safari, Textedit etc.)?

Spell checking is not an application feature but a system one.
When a checker is installed, it is available for every modern application.
Is Grrek available in the list of languages available from
    System PrefPane entitled International ?
    If itsn't, install it.
Maybe this will connect a spellchecker too.
If it doesn't, grab a checker from cocoaSpell.

  • Wrong English spell-checking dictionary

So I didn’t install the OS on my new MacBook Pro and it has the wrong spell-checking dictionary - ie US-English and not English-English. I have no idea why. How do I sort this so I can labour and not labor, colour and not color?
And while I’m at it, can I move the user dictionary from my old PB [OS 10.4.11] to this 10.5.8 machine?

    Tom Gewecke wrote:
Go to system prefs/international/languages and move British English to the top of the list (use the Edit button if necessary).
Yeah. It was the first place I looked. The /languages says ‘English’ - not British-English or US-English. Just ‘English’. There are no options.
Also you can select British English in Edit > Spelling for each app (Inspector > Text > More > Language in Pages).

  • How do I add an entry to the auto correct spell check dictionary?

How do I add an entry to the auto-correct dictionary for spell check?

The suggestion from Encrypted11 is for adding a keyboard shortcut, if that is what you want to do. If you want to add a custom word to the keyboard dictionary ....
    The iPad Dictionary
The iPad has a dictionary built in. As you type, it compares what you've typed against the words in that dictionary. If it finds a partial match, it displays a suggestion just beneath what you have typed.
If you accept the suggestion by tapping the Space or full stop, great.
If you allow the 'mistake' to stand, the second time you type the same word and reject the correction, iPad adds the new word to its custom, dynamic dictionary. From now on, it will accept the new word and will even suggest it the next time you type something like it.
    That is copied from here.

  • After iOS8, spell check doesn't work for last word in sentence

    Hello,
After updating my iPhone 5 to iOS 8, i've noticed that the spell checker and the keybord shortcuts arent working for the last word in sentence.
For instance, I used to have a shortcut, so whenever I texted LOL and hit the send button, it would send "HAHAHAHA" into the message.
Now, if i just type LOL and hit send, it will send LOL iinto conversation.
Has anyone managed to fix it out?
    Thanks.

    Confirm this is selected:
    In the new Write window
Options > Spell check as you type
''re Yes, I have dictionaries installed.''
This implies you have more than one dictionary.
Can you check to see if any addon /extension is causing a conflict.
There is no point starting up in safe mode as this will disable the dictionaries. So instead:
    Tools > Add-ons
The 'Add-ons Manager will open in a new tab
    select 'Extensions'
Disable all add-on extensions except for one dictionary.
Check to see if that dictionary is an up to date version.
    then select 'Dictionaries'
This is where the default dictionary is located.
In my case it is 'United States English Spellchecker'
    make sure this is disabled.
The idea being to ensure that only one dictionary is enabled and that it is up to date. Then check to see if the spell check works.
If you have other dictionaries, go through the process of enabling one dictionary, checking it is up to date and then testing the spell check.
Please confirm which dictionaries you have installed.
for example, I have British English Dictionary 1.19.1 and it is located under Tools > Addons > 'Extensions' and it is enabled.
    I also have under:
    Tools > Addons > 'Dictionaries'
'United States English Spellchecker' 7.0.1 but this is disabled.
Tell us what you have and report back on the testing.

  • UK English Language Spell Checker - Dictionary

    Hi All
Does any body know if Pages '08 (or '09) comes with an UK English dictionary or just the American.
    Thanks for your help
    Regards

educateer - you need to go to System Preferences > International > Language (or similar words). Add the languages you are interested in BUT make sure you have british English at the top. It can be dragged there.
But if you are using Pages08 you will only get English, not British English!
This apply to spell checker, not to dictionary.
There is only ONE delivered dictionary: the Oxford American English.

  • Please add "iPhone" to the spell check dictionary.

The forums spell checker is flagging iPhone, which is an Apple product name. Please add it to the dictionary.

    Klaus1 wrote:

As you don't run a Mac I can only suggest that you add them yourself - after all you only have to do it once!
Umm, I want to be as "constructive" as possible, so I'll clarify my statement. My suggestion referred to the web based spell checker built into the apple discussions site. It's the little "ABC" checkmark icon between underline and quote. This application does not run on anyone's local machine, (Mac or other)- it's web based.
On the server, it contains a database of all the words that are spelled correctly, along with thousands of suggestions for how to correctly spell words that aren't correct.
Apple generally takes very good care to make the user experience seamless and well thought out. Unfortunately in this case, it's failure to include it's own brand names like "phone" seems careless or at least sloppy. If you look beyond just it's own product names like "iMac", you'll also discover than common feature words like WiFi, GSM and dozens of other words which are commonly used in these forums are also missing. I'm trying to help Apple give the most professional image possible.
As for your comment, immediatly replying that I'm not using a Mac so too bad seems to run counter to the desire of this community, beyond the fact that you don't understand this application. If the goal is to encourage Windows, (or in my case Linux), users to move to OSX, then you might want to be or encouraging and not so dismissive. If your goal is to alienate potential customers perhaps you're ideally suited for the Linux user community who's elitist ugliness for NOOBS is legendary.

  • How do u + an initial into spell check & then have it write out word?

In word I was able to type into the spell check ESE and then when I typed it it would automatically change it to exceptional student education. I have about 50 of these in word and I am now a new Macbook user and trying to re-create in pages what I had in word.
    PLEASE help!
    THANKS

In Pages go to the Pages Menu, select 'Preferences' and click on Auto-Correction, there you can add your abbreviations and the expanded equivalent.

  • How to create a text area with spell check and other functions similar to word?

I want to allow users the ability to copy and paste their content  on to the site.  The problem is giving them the option to use spell check and other word like features to my site.  My goal is to develop some thing  similar to how we post our question in this forums.

You realize you'll need to use server-side scripts and a database for this.  Instead of re-inventing the wheel, you might just want to install WordPress, Drupal or Joomla on your site.

  • Spell checker/dictionary in iPad 2?

    Hello,
I bought iPad2 in the UK, about a week ago and would like to activate the French dictionary/spell checker.  I have tried changing the language to French and the keybourd to French but this doesn't seem to work.  Any idead please?
    Thank you
    John

    Hey,
do you have two or more keyboards/keyboardlanguages activated in the system? If so you have to "click" the sort of globe on the keyboard to change between the keyboards.
    Maybe that helps.
And don't forget to activate the spell checker in the preferences. (general -> keyboard)

  • Spell checker dictionary

    Hello,
I wish to remove an incorrectly learned spelling in Pages '08. I went to Pages help and the instructions say (paraphrasing): Edit>Spelling>Spelling type in word to the left of 'correct' and press 'forget'. When I went to my Pages to follow these instructions I found that my spell checker does not have these buttons. All I can see is 'Ignore', 'Learn', 'Find Next' and 'Change'.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello
