Spell checking multiple languages

I would like Mail to do spell checking while i type, but determine automatically the language the message is written in. (sometimes i write English mails, sometimes German.)
Any ideas or hints, how i could Mail perform that feat?
Best regards,
Gabriel.

How about changing languages in
Dictionary.app?
Not possible, currently only one (English) dictionary available for that.

  • Text and spell check in languages other than English

I am a linguist who writes papers primarily in English, but which contain a significant number of words and paragraphs in other languages. Is there a way (as there is in MSWord) to highlight these words and passages and choose a different language for them so that the spell checker does not see them as English misspelled words.
Even better would be for the spell checker to identify eventual errors in these paragraphs of foreign languages: However, when I choose EDIT > SPELLING > SPELLING... the spelling checker window has no button or menu allowing the user to select different languages or language dictionaries.
I know that Mail does it automatically for the languages provided. Is there anything comparable in Pages?
Most of the alternative languages I use are quite common, i.e. French, Spanish, Portuguese.

    drew,
Select your paragraph, click on the Text Inspector, More button, then select the language from the menu.

  • Multilingual spellcheck - check multiple languages at the same time

    Hi guys,
I very often write in two languages - czech and english. I've installed a czech spellcheck library from OpenOffice (basically put the .aff and .dic files into my /Library/Spelling/ folder). Both czech and english spellchecking works fine separately but I definitely don't want to switch the language setting for each piece of text I write every time I start composing something new. I didn't find any other way of checking the spelling in more languages and the "automatic by the language" option obviously means you have to set the language of the document every time, which is quite pain in the *** resulting in not using the spellchecker at all. I don't care about recognition or setting of the language of my documents, I'd be happy with just something like a "merged language library" which would work with both languages combined. Can I do something like this in Leopard?
I went through dozen of old messages from 2008/2009 speaking about some multilingual setting in Tiger and maybe early Leopard but didn't find any solution which would work in current 10.6 OSX. Any advice?

Thanks guys, it's a bit more clear how the spellchecker works now and it seems to me like quite a mess I'll definitely use that form and ask Apple to make this work a bit better.
Anyway, it seems to me that the built-in spellchecker works pretty well for one language on places where I noticed. Do you think it would be possible to create a hybrid language library in the meantime which would contain both my languages, thus doing what I needed until Apple fixes this? I'll use this combined language for checking the spelling, nothing else. Has anyone done such a thing so far?
I haven't tried it but it should be possible if you have access to the a document with all the words.
    1. My idea is that you have word processors language set to the you have for the computer.
    2. Write a word that is in the other language, select the word and Ctrl click on it > Learn spelling. Do this for about 3 words.
    3. Now the computer has created a language file in Users > your name > Library > Spelling. It is probably named cz
    4. Open the cz file in TextEdit. You will see the is one word on each line in alphabetical order
    5. If you have a list of english word you can add those in the textEdit file. Make sure the words are in alphabetical order. Save the document
    6. May this list only will work in the word processing application where you started the custom word list but I don't know. You have to try it.

  • Spell checker/Other languages

Unlike other applications I can't seem to change the dictionary file on iWeb so right now I'm stuck with american english, any way around this or some way to let the developers know they forgot something?

There does not appear to be an option in iWeb for spelling but, for me at least, it seems to pick up on the International settings you have in System preferences.
I tried this by typing colour and color - the US version was highlighted as wrong giving colour as the correct version. Despite looking everywhere I can't find an option to change language so check to ensure your language settings are correct (I think you need to restart if you make changes).
    Best of luck,
    Michael

  • Pages for iPad - multilingual spell check

Is there any way to spell check multiple languages in Pages for the iPad (or the iWork apps in general, for that matter), short of changing the system language every time?
I routinely write in English, German and French. In most apps, including Mail, SMS and Notes, spell-checking automatically adapts to the keyboard layout chosen, and multilingual typing is a breeze. Not so in iWork, it seems.
I am currently working on a German document in Pages on my iPad, and the only way I could get usable spell-checking was to switch the whole system to German, which seems like overkill.
    Am I missing something?

No, you are not missing anything. The last version of iWork for iOS (1.4) is out today, but still has the same problem. Send feedback to Apple and make yourself heard here in the forums. Maybe they'll notice.
I have the exact same problem. My solution is, unfortunately, not to use Pages on the iPad. Every other word processing app I know of uses the language of the selected keyboard to check the spelling.
The irony is, iOS already has a beautiful system to handle documents in many languages, with all the necessary keyboards and dictionaries. The only apps that do not make use of all that are the ones from Apple...

  • Spell-checker keeps changing to US English when system language order is changed

When I switch the order of preferred system languages in System Preferences' Language and Text section, the spell-checker's language often changes to 'US English', even though it's disabled on my computer as I prefer the British spell-checker. My current preferred language order is 'British English', followed by 'English' and 'German'. US English is completely disabled as a system language. When I go and check the 'spelling' option in the Language and Text panel, the spelling is set to US English (even if it had British English set before, which it has done since I initially set up my language options) and I have to see unsightly red underlines under words like colour and realise. Whilst this is easy to change I would rather not have to constantly change it back to British every time I do this. Does anyone else experience this, and is there a way to prevent the US English zombie from rising again?
    I'm using OS X 10.8.4.

It may be a general category, but in practice I have never seen a piece a software where English will give any other localization than American English.  Have you?
I doubt that switching OS languages is something many people do more than once.  Still, you are right that it should go back to the original setting.  Let Apple know via

  • Spell Check Text in Spanish in Acrobat Pro 9

I can only spell check in English and I work in various languages. I went to File > Properties > Advanced > Reading, changed it to Spanish
Then Edit > Check Spelling > In Fields editable text, comments  then when it opens it does not show Editable Text.
How do I set my text to Editable Text. I have searched and have not found the solution. There are documents that I have created myself. Thanks for the help ...

Figured out the solution: Go to Edit > Preferences > Spelling > Check the languages you wish to use and move them up to the top. Make sure the language you wish to use in a particular document is at the very top since it seems the Adobe is not intuitive. . I guess it will not check multiple language in the same pdf document.

  • Can pages spell check in Spanish?

My daughter is doing a paper for her Spanish class, and would like to spell check the document, Does Pages have the capability to spell check in languages other than English?
Thanks for any and all helpful info.

Aha, so that's the reason you're going after me.  You've decided that what I posted today has zero to do with a poster who posted years ago, so I need to have my hand slapped.
Can I point out that the title of this thread is "can pages spell check in Spanish?"  The title didn't limit the question to one particular version.
Do you not realize that for everyone who writes a post about their problem there are many other people who simply search the archives to get their problem addressed? Instead of posting a brand new question they search the archives and solve their own problems without ever being detected.  The lurkers as they are often called.
Take me for example, I was searching this very issue today, came across this very post, and the solution you offered back in January of 2012 didn't work for me. So, I poked around in Pages until I found the current solution to my current version of Pages. And, I added it to the discussion for the sake of others like me who might find the January 2012 solution not workable for them either. So, they wouldn't have to poke around and work it out for themselves.
I hope this is not how you treat everyone who contributes to the knowledge base.  Try to be a little patient if you will with the ones of us who don't hang around here day in and day out. While we may not know your rules for the sandbox, we're just trying to be helpful. No need to come after us with your guns blazing.

  • Bilingual spell-checking?

I used to be able to type sentences mixing French and English and OS X would correctly spell-check both languages at the same time using the "bilingual" dictionary option. It seems that Snow Leopard has replaced the "bilingual" option with "automatic" language detection which looks at the words typed and then spell-checks only for the first language encountered. This is a huge step backward. Is there a way to revert to the previous "bilingual" behavior?

    Mark Alan Thomas wrote:
For example, in Leopard, using the "multilingual" setting, I could type the following sentence —
+"Je vais dire" means "I'm going to say" in French.+
    — and Leopard would not flag any words as misspelled because everything is correctly spelled even though I've mixed French and English in the same sentence. Super useful.
I disagree. I had Multilingual turned on and then I realized that it was ignoring all my misspellings because they were correct in some particular language or dialect. As an American living in Canada, I don't want to have to keep track of how many l's are in any particular word.
However, in Snow Leopard using the "automatic" setting the words "vais" and "means" get flagged as misspelled (though, actually, it's inconsistent) even though both the English and French dictionaries are enabled. Useless!
Again, I disagree. Have you setup spelling in Snow Leopard to only check French and English? Go to System Preferences -> Text Preferences -> Spelling -> Setup and uncheck everything bug French and English.
I just typed your sentence with only French and (American) English enabled and no misspellings.

  • How to use multiple languages at the same time for spell checking?

I use two different languages all the time and words are mostly so different (English and Finnish) that I could have spell checking on for both languages at the same time.
Now it seem to allow to select only one language at the time and I have to switch back and fort zillion of times per day.

    Thanks for the quick answer.
The Dictionary Switcher doesn't seem to work with Finnish language, it doesn't detect it at all to be one of the choices although in the Firefox context menu Languages -> Finnish/Finland is shown.
Also, if it would work, I would need to get rid of multiple EN_* langauges. I just need EN_UK or EN_US, not all 22 different EN_*.
One option would be to create a custom dictionary, which would have words from both languages. The next task is then to find out how to make this kind of custom ENFI-dictionary, which would have words from both English and Finnish languages.
Finnish may be a some kind of special case for spell checking anyway, because the support is in its separate plugin:

    Inspector > Text > More > Language
Only applies to selected text, like making it a particular font.
It is not a setting that sticks. If you continue to paste in text from elsewhere particularly the Internet it will have a different or None language set to it. You need to select it and make it B.E.

  • Trying to spell check email, I get this: "This language is no longer available for spell checking.

Firefox does automatically check my emails like it does when I use Word Perfect. When I select spell check, I get this message: "This language is no longer available for spell checking. Please check another in the spelling options box."
When I click on the spelling options box, I get the same message. I have never changed any settings as regards to spell checking

Which language is selected if you check that via the right-click context menu > Languages in a text area?
Is that dictionary still installed and enabled?

  • Set spell check language to British once and for all...

I know this question has been asked a few times before but I just cannot fix it on my iMac or MBP. I am running Snow Leopard (still too scared to upgrade to Lion) and want to globally change my spell-check to British.
I have tried everything. Every option in the System Preferences where I can change the language to British I have done and also changed the preferences in each application by right-clicking the underlined text, selecting 'spelling and gramma' and setting the dropdown to British English. All to no avail. As soon as I go back to TextEdit or something and type 'colour' it's telling me to change it to 'color'. Infuriating!
Does anyone have any clue? The irony is that I managed to make it work as I wanted (no American spellings) on my old MacBook running Snow Leopard but just can't on my newer computers.
    Many thanks

  • How do I change the default language for spell-checker please?

I have seen the instructions below but cannot find the Personalization section?
I currently have a US English spell-checker, I need a UK English one.
    Changing The Default Language
Make sure you are on your homescreen.
Tap on the Settings app to open the Settings App.
    Scroll to the Personalization section.
    Tap on Language.

Have just found that if you select Install Language Pack but then, do NOT download it, just below and to the right of "Download Now" is "View other versions".
Click on that and the second item is Version28.0
Hover your mouse on that and you get " + Add to Firefox" - so select that.
