Spilled a whole bunch of coffee on my mbp, 2 days later, working but sticky

It happened last thursday... i just about fainted.
Anyway... took the battery out, inverted it, stuck a fan on it for 2 days, crossed my fingers, and turned it on.
It seems to be working, except the backlight on the keyboard doesn't seem to reach all the keys, and the keys themselves stick. I don't have the tools or the guts to open this thing up to try and clean it, I'd rather someone whose familiar with its guts give it wipe down and assess the damage, but....
There's no apple store where i live. the best we've got is a reseller. I went in there, was told they were "swamped" and since it's working, to come back in a week to 10days.
(sigh) Any idea on it lasting that long?

This is really unfortunate. What's even worse, your Apple retailer sounds pretty clueless. They should have advised you to leave your MBP off and maybe even suggested sending it to Apple if they couldn't get to it in a timely manner. If there is any hope of saving it, the coffee needs to be removed as quickly as possible before it causes further damage. And the machine should be left off.
After a spill like this, the MBP should really come apart as soon as possible, and anything the coffee touched be cleaned or replaced. And it should not be powered up until after this has been done. It can be catastrophic to electronics to power them up with any liquid bridging the circuitry.
You did the right thing by turning it off and removing the battery and drying it under a fan, but two days is not really enough to be sure all the liquid has dried. It can still be working its way deeper into the machine. It may work for a while--maybe even a long while, but its future is dismal.
Your best bet may be to call Apple and tell them what happened and ask about shipping it to them to be cleaned. If you're really lucky, you may only have to have the keyboard replaced. But there's no way to tell without opening it up. And wiping it off is not sufficient--the acids in coffee can eat away the circuit traces over time. Affected parts will have to either be thoroughly cleaned with deionized water and dried or just replaced. It's possible your homeowner's insurance might cover some of the cost.
Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news, but I felt you deserved a straight answer. And I'm afraid I wouldn't have much confidence in your local retailer's ability to clean it properly after the advice they gave you. Just hope you luck out and your Mac can be salvaged.
Good luck!

You can select multiple e-mails for deletion in iOS, no need to wait for an update ... tap Edit, select the ones you want deleted, then tap Delete.
I can't see how a "delete all" function would be useful -- how often does one delete all messages in a folder?  If that did exist can you imagine the users who'd accidentally clear out their entire Inbox by mistake?

  • I tried validating my fonts and there are a whole bunch of fonts that have problems. How do I fix these problems?

I was reading this article and it said that you should validate your fonts occasionally. I did and a whole bunch fonts came up with problems. How do I fix these problems?

At the top of the window where your fonts appear after the validation run, there's a drop-down (defaulted to 'all')
Select warnings and errors from that list and the resultant list in the main window should tell you what the problem is. The most common is duplicated fonts.
You can use 'resolve duplicates' in Font book, but it can be a bit hit and miss which ones it deactivates.

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • Pacman trashed a whole bunch of packages

I was doing a big upgrade of maybe 100 or so packages and my system froze hard while pacman was installing stuff.  Even alt-sysrq didn't work and there was nothing I could do other than a hard reset.  After reset it appears that every single package it was installing is now trashed in a bad state.  Why doesn't pacman keep the state of what's it doing so it can recover in situations like this?  apt remembers if it hasn't fully configured a package so you can easily do a "apt-get -f install" to make it continue where it left off.
So now I'm stuck with a bunch of broken packages ("short file" errors and such).  Force reinstalling each package works but I have no idea which packages are in a bad state.  As I try to use the system I find more and more broken packages.   Basically the whole system is hosed because I can't manually pick through and reinstall every broken package.  Is there any way I can tell which packages pacman was working on during the failure and get it to repair them?

Ah, found my original account.  That excl account can be deleted.  I thought I had lost this one.  Anyway...
tomk wrote:Firstly, if you think pacman should have any particular additional functionality, submit a proper feature request, preferably with a patch attached. Including stuff like that in a forum help request is pointless.
Well the reason I would post something like there here is in the hopes that someone would say "It already does!" and show me the error of my ways and what I need to do.  It's not pointless in the sense that I think I just may not know what I'm doing.
Secondly, please post the complete output from any failed pacman commands - paraphrased snippets like "failed to install", "regular errors" (whatever they are), and "file existing in package" are not helpful.
Well if the machine actually worked I could do that.  As it is now I have no easy way to post the logs from that machine.  Besides, I'm not really looking for help on those issues, my original request was to get help on getting pacman to fix all the stuff it left in an indeterminate state.  I know how to fix errors like "file existing in package" (although I do still dislike that this type of problem still exists).  The bunch of zero length files is my main concern.
And about apt remembering "if it hasn't fully configured a package" - pacman installs only, the configuration is up to you.
This isn't about the user configuration.  I'm referring to pacman installation procedure.  It goes through a series of steps something like: download, verify, extract, configure.  It failed before it finished all those steps and left those packages in a bad state.   At this point as far as pacman is concerned it thinks it finished everything when it in fact it didn't.
Inxsible wrote:Here's a sticky for the FILENAME exists in filesystem -- I am assuming that's what you mean by file exists in package error.
Yeah sorry, I should have been more clear.  I know what the error is and how to fix it.   I just meant "that typical error that everyone knows about."  That's the reason why I didn't elaborate on the errors I was getting.
With that said, it doesn't sound like there is an easy fix for this.  I'll mess around with it some more and see what I can do.  I was just hoping to not have to put in this amount of work to get the system running again

I have a whole bunch of CDs that I would like to import into iTunes. If I do that, would the songs still reside on my PC (which would take up too much space), or is there a way to get them "into the Cloud"? Thanks so much

Sign up to iTunes Match, though I'd consider investing in more storage. If space is a problem now then you're probably not backing up your existing media and content, which you should most certainly do.

    Spill Cleaning
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - key the keys down until the iPod/iPhone is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place and you will be able to change your settings.

    Hi
    Magic solution - NO
    Some thoughts - YES
Is the iPhoto Library still where it was previously (or on external Hard Disk - now turned off) ?
One approach might be to - Repair iPhoto library (but this takes hours - so try below first)
    Trouble-shooting guide
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
Creating a new User-Account and log into this
This forces iMovie to create all pref. and cache files new and error free
Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
a Codec is used that doesn't work (even though iMovie and/or iDVD tries to / they fail in the end)
version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
USB-flash-memories - usually do not work
Net-work connected hard disks - usually do not work (most often not fast enough and WRONGLY FORMATTES as DOS etc)
iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie. When iMovie starts-up it first look trough this iPhoto library and if faulty it all Halt’s.
    This You do by
    First -  close iPhoto
    Secondly - on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
Thirdly - now select all five options presented
THEN - WAIT a long long time (>20 hours are not strange)
free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
Screen must be set to million-colors
    Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • MacBook water spill - works but doesn't charge. Apple doesn't do partial repairs?

I spilled some water on my MacBook Pro (15in retina).
I let it dry for a couple of days then powered it. It worked.
When the battery got to 0%, I plugged the MacSafe and it didn't charge. It sometimes charges, but intermittently. It charges very rarely.
I brought the laptop to the Apple Store, and they said that it would cost $2000 to repair, because they want to replace EVERY parts that were water stained.
I only want to change the Adapter Port, and POSSIBLY the Logic Board IF changing the Adapter Port didn't fix the charging issue. Knowing the above, it will most likely work, but if it doesn't, that's OK, I'll buy a new one. I'd rather risk $3-400 by doing this and buying a new Macbook IF it fails, than paying 2K for a repair straight away.
Of course my laptop could break eventually if not all parts are replaced, but that's fine (I was able to wash some water stains with alcohol already).
Why doesn't Apple simply change the parts that must be changed, letting the customer take a risk or whatever if he wants so?
IMO -- Terrible policy that must be reviewed.

  • Coffee spilled on Macbook Pro, still works but shuts off randomly

    Hello,
A Macbook in the family had coffee recently spilled on the keyboard. It was immediately un-plugged and flipped upside down and left powered off for a week or so. I took it apart and cleaned what residue I could find off with rubbing alcohol on the logic board and any other parts including the charging circuit board. I re-assembled it and tested it; sure enough it powered up perfectly fine and all works well.
However, it is not totally working flawlessly. It will be working fine for maybe 20-30min then randomly shuts off cold (as if the power button was held down). The next time it is powered up, sometimes it requires several presses of the power button. When the screen finally comes up, the screen shows the gray, out of focus picture of my desktop with the block progress bar. Once the progress bar finishes, all is well until the next power down.
I am wondering if anyone knows a specific component I should look at as suspect to this problem. The logic board appears to be fine with a few spots not perfect. I have ordered a new Mag Safe charging component as this circuit board has a lot of corrosion. I thought I should look at where the power button attaches to the logic board to see if there is a short that could simulate holding the power button down and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. I wouldn't think the power button would need replacing as it is mounted higher up off the bottom of the case, but it may be worth replacing?
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks
