Spilled Beer on MacBook Pro

My roommate spilled an entire cup of beer on my MacBook Pro (which was sitting open) So it is all in the keyboard and I am assuming leaked down into everything else. The computer was not on when this happened but it no longer will turn on at all. It had been over a week so I am sure whatever liquid got into the computer is completely dry by now. I am just trying to figure out my options here...should I take it to an Apple Store? Bestbuy? to get looked at? I have only had the computer for about 2 months so I am not sure what warranties are on it (although I highly doubt they cover spilled beer...haha)
Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

There is a chance the machine will survive without damage. The optical drive is the most difficult component. I disagree about the idea that the machine is completely dry on the inside after a week. It might take longer.
Beer will leave a sticky mess inside which is not a very good insulator. The machine needs to be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned with a suitable solvent in order to remove those traces. All connectors need to be cleaned as well.

  • Spilled beer on Macbook Pro keyboard

I had a going away party and made the mistake of leaving my computer in the living room after going to sleep. I woke up in the morning and the computer was closed but when I opened it I discovered that beer had been spilt on the keyboard. Everything works fine, the computer booted up normally and there are no issues besides a few of the keys sticking. The space bar sticks the most. What should I do? Should I remove the keys myself and wipe them down or do I need to take it to a repair shop to have it cleaned? I am moving to France for a year on Thursday and really want to get it figured out before I go.
    Thanks!

liquid + electronics = short in the circuit somewhere.
best solutions is to take it in for service - not covered under warranty.
any leftover liquid could've gone all the way to your logic board that might cause your issues if you keep on using it.
best solution is to have it looked at before more damage happen to your macbook.
    good luck

  • Spilled liquid on MacBook Pro - won't start - any suggestions?

spilled liquid on MacBook Pro - won't start - any suggestions?

Thank you both for your responses! I watched a video on how to remove the hard drive - special tork(?) screwdriver and too many steps for me to feel confident about doing it myself, so I took the computer to an Apple Store - and thank God, the hard drive appeared undamaged - they are transferring the data to a new Macbook Pro. The loss of data was the scariest part, so I am breathing again!
The laptop was three years old, I was hoping for another year or so before upgrading, but such is life. I appreciate your upfront advice.

  • I spilled tea on macbook pro and got it repaired at apple authorised service centre but not convinced about there way?

recently i spilled tea on my macbook pro  screen but key were safe as it was covered with key guard, some tea trickeled down from screen to the dividing portion, imediatly i switched it off and left it for long period of time and then restarted it everything was fine only it was not getting charged the green ligh was only there, i took it to authorised apple service centre (very far) they examined it and told that everything seems to be ok..but they asked for some time to find some internal damage..i left the machine there and came back..i haven't received any call from them for two days when i asked them they told they need to change the charging port i agreed ..again no call from them..i just made a call again this time they told that charging port was unable to fix the problem..they told the the logic board has to be replaced..since it was costly and i bought the machine 5 month back ...so i made  my mind to buy new one ..again i made a call (everytime i called them) they told  me they have a logic board of some customer who broke his led panel and need to sell his logic board.they offered me if i want i can buy that..it will cost 35000(more than 50% than orignal machine) , i told them it will cover the warrenty or not they confirmed me "yes". i told them to change it since  i was out of station ,it was not possible for me to go there so it was all done on phone. please help me i collected my macbook pro with lot of doubt in my mind..
1.Is that logic board will cover the warrenty and how can i make out is they changed it or just done nothing
2.what controll apple has on its service centre
3.when i asked them if something goes wrong and  i will have to take it to any other service centre what to do,they suggested not to mention about logic board changing issue
    4. is orignal logic board has some item no or something so that i can find out, i feel ,may be wrong that hey must have cheated me..and the charging port must have resolved the problem
Please help..and sorry for my language error,

So The Serial Number W80201QNATN is from your original invoice when you first bought the MBP. The same serial number is on the body of the MBP. The same serial number shows up in System Profiler when you start the MBP.
That all matches with the information given from one of the links I posted earlier. It fits your MBP perfectly:
    Serial number: W80201QNATN
Name: MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 13 inch)
    Group1: MacBook
    Group2: Pro
    Generation: 71
    ModelCode:
    Machine Model: MacBookPro7,1
    Model introduced: 2010
    Production year: 2010
    Production week: 20  (May)
Production number: 1994 (within this week)
    introduced test: 2010 (0) 1
    introduced test: GOED
    CPU speed: 2.66GHz
Family name: Become a pro user to see this information. (sorry)
    Screen size: 13 inch
    Screen resolution: 1280x800 pixels
    Colour: Aluminium
    Factory: W8 (Shanghai China)
Now this is a serial number you provided earlier: 34031968Atm Where does this come from?

  • Water Spilled on 2011 MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I need help as to what to do next and whether or not I have a chance at saving my laptop.
I had a thermos of hot-ish water with a tea bag on my desk next to my 2011 MacBook Pro. My Mac has a keyboard cover, and a hard plastic case on both parts of the laptop.
About 3 ounces of water spilled onto my computer on the left between the keyboard and screen. At contact, the screen went immediately black and within a couple seconds I dried up the water with paper towels. I also removed the cases and cover and dried up the few drops that had leaked through that.
Now my computer is in a cool dry place and I haven't attempted to turn it on at all. I've already made an Apple Store appointment but I want to hear from other users as to what I can do from home.
    Thank you for your help!

Youre out of luck, considering the spill and immediate blackout, trying to "dry it out" is a lost cause.
Everyone likes the "dry it out and turn it on" ploy, but it doesnt work, after major damage, not a chance.
Make a service call to Apple for likely logic board replacement and otherwise.

  • Fruit Drink Spilled on my MacBook Pro, What do I do?

    Ok,
I never thought I'd be in this situation. A watermellon drink's cup split down the side and spilled out onto my 17" MacBook Pro's keyboard and touchpad. (the laptop was on at the time.) I pulled the battery and cleaned it off as best as I could. It is now sitting on a pile of papertowls.
What do I do? I'm terrified to turn it on (shorting it out). I have no clue what damage,if any, has been done. I am more than certain that Apple Care doesn't cover fruit drink spills. . .
Do I open it up and clean it? If so what is the best way? Does the Genious bar ship out laptops to repair (at my expense)?
I did file a complaint to https://www.econsumer.gov/english/ (The company is based out of Taiwan . . ) This is basically a dead-end I'm sure.
This is a nightmare. (I have a 15" so I'm not without a computer but the 17" was my desktop replacement/has all my data. . . and costs well over 3k all together. . . )
    Advice?

I feel sorry for you old bean, but you might be OK.......you might like to hear my story. I can't blame it on kids, its down to my own clumsy self...
I spilled coffee (pretty bad) all over a very nice Pismo G3, which caused the screen to emit 'digital gunk', starting with a stripe at the top, and creeping all over the screen in about two weeks.
I had to claim on the insurance, which enabled me to get a Titanium Powerbook G4 (The first model, very nice, very thin).
About a week after it had arrived, I managed to spill coca cola (just about the worst thing you could spill apart from acid) all over it. I removed the battery, opened up the keyboard, wiped it with a damp cloth where possible, and passed a hairdryer over it. Then started praying.
When I plucked up the courage to boot it up, it worked fine, apart from a very sticky keyboard. A new keyboard from apple was £400 in them days, so I 'stuck with it' until managing to get a second hand replacement keyboard for £115.
I would be very surprised if your MacBook Pro doesn't survive (maybe minus the keyboard)

  • Spilled Juice on Macbook Pro 13inch

    Ok so,
It finally happened to me. I spilled a cabronated fruit juice on my late 2012 13" macbook pro.
I bought it in April of last year - so it is still under its one- year warrenty.
To be fair - it was acting a bit wonky even before the spill and I intended to take it in in the new year.
I am not sure how much got on - but not a huge amount - likely less than a couple of tablespoons.
It spilled along the back near the exhaust and on button.
I shut down immediately. I did my best to soak up what I could see. Turned my laptop over and let whatever was there run out.
I've let it sit for about four or five hours and then tried to turn it on. It would not respond.
However, when I connected the adapter the light on the adapter responded and the battery indicated on the side responded as well - I understand that this is a good sign?
I've taken the extra step of taking the unit apart to dry.
I did see some wetness on the black covering behind the keyboard in the space around the on button, or the upper left corner (looking at the laptop from behind)
I've removed the hard drive and the disk drive. I've disconnected and removed the battery.
What else can I do? Is there any hope.

    Hi P,
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2030013/advice-from-an-apple-tech-three-common-m ac-fixes.html
shut it down immediately, lest you continue short-circuiting your computer and thus blasting small holes through its components. Just because your computer works for a while after you’ve spilled liquid on it doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Damage from liquid spills start out small and difficult to diagnose, and then over time spreads to become larger functional issues.
The best thing to do in this case is to take your Mac to an Apple-authorized service center. But if you are feeling handy and are OK with voiding your AppleCare warranty, you can clean your computer yourself. Unplug it, open it up, and disconnect the battery and all connections to the logic board. Then sit the open computer by a fan while gently scrubbing all sections of the logic board with cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol. Clean both the top and bottom of the logic board if possible, then let the exposed MacBook dry in the path of the fan overnight before piecing everything back together and turning the computer back on. With any luck, the crisis will be over.

  • Some coffee got spilled on my MacBook Pro keyboard

Some coffee got spilled onto the keyboard of my MacBook Pro keyboard (it's the newest model), when it happened I turned it off immediately and quickly turned it over to have it drip out of the keys. I blow-dryed the keys with cool air and let it sit upside down for almost five hours. I went to turn it on and it started working fine. Is there a possibility that my laptop got liquid damage if it's turning on fine? Should I take it into an Apple Store to double check? There isn't one near me so I'm trying to avoid a trip if I can.

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service ASAP. You are not qualified to handle liquid spills on a computer.

  • Friend spilled Drink on Macbook Pro... Keyboard sticky...

One of my friends spilled a drink on my macbook pro and half of my keyboard is sticky (under the keys) and i was wonding if there was a way to clean that safely.

    Hi
That *****, but there is a sollution. What you need to do is the following....
Remove the top cover of the notebook and remove the keyboard...
Then, wash the keyboard with water only, making sure everything is clean and not sticky anymore.
Then the most important part is to let it dry properly, you can use a heardryer on a low heat. Just make sure its perfectly dry. Should be like new after you put everything back together.
We fixed a notebook that got some juice spilled on it like this. They wanted to replace everything, but we fixed it 100% with only time, effort and water....
ps, we even fixed the sticky cd-rom and removed all other juice with water aswell.
Most essential part is to make sure everything is dry!!!

  • Spilled water on macbook pro

I just spilled a water on my macbook pro, near the top by the esc key.  I've turned it upside down, gently tapped to try and get remaining water out, and am hoping it will dry.  Any other suggestions?

You did not say if it was running when the water was spilled, and if so whether or not the system shut itself down.
    Do not turn on.
    Leave unplugged from the wall.
Have the Genius Bar verify that nothing is damaged and that nothing is starting to corrode (I am not joking).

  • Spilled water on Macbook pro while On.

So, spilled water on my macbook pro which was on then proceeded to shut off right after. This was last night, tried turning it on again today and still nothing. People have told me I need to take the battery out but I don't think you can do that with these computers? Help.

Just take it in for repair. Expect to pay a lot.

  • Spilled wine on MacBook Pro  ... Now won't turn on

  • Spilled drink on macbook pro

I spilled a drink, rum and coke on my brand new Macbook Pro.  The liquid came from the side on the table like a little liquid swell.  It got the ports, the left portion of the keyboard, about and inch or 2 and a little on the vent area on the left about an inch or 2.
Immediately I powered down, held upside down, and dried it.  I then put it in rice in a pelican case over night.  I tried it the next day and it worked okay.  Okay, a little weird, but functioning.  Then It was working fine for about a week.  Now doesn't read battery, wont charge, powers on only if plugged in.  Then, it started reading battery again and working fine. Now today, after taking it to the Genius bar yesterday, it's not reading the battery again and now it's not powering on even when plugged in.  Green charge light on the charger connector is VERY light, can barley see it.
Should I disassemble and clean with 99% alcohol like I've read in many threads?
    Please help!

dont turn it on, water / liquids migrate.
Turning it back on is BAD, damage A can lead to B leads to C etc.
Also water migrating around, especially while on, can wreck havoc worse than initial damage.
Nobody here can speculate on damage on something they cannot see.
Having repaired laptops in the past, even IF you got it completely dry, residue from water (iron particles etc), and wet spots under fine contacts is nearly impossible to "dry out", its just doesnt work that way.
Lots of people try to "dry it out", most to learn little was solved in doing same, and sometimes further damage occurred.
Taking it apart, youll just about never "dry out it out" due to the all the hidden spots that will REMAIN wet for some time, even IF you dry to "dry it out"
Make appt. with Apple store fore repair / diagnostic.
dont turn it on again.  Sorry about the spill

  • Spilled water on MacBook Pro, data/Hard Drive question.

I spilled water on my MacBook Pro while it was on, and I am pretty sure it is fried now, but I am letting it dry first.  If worst comes to worst, is there a way to still check if the data on the hard drive is still salvageable and can be removed and stored into an external hard drive, or if the hard drive can be removed and replaced in a different MacBook Pro completely?  I know Genius Bar more than likely wont be of any help since the latest backup does not include nearly enough of the files I am trying to recover.  Any suggestions or knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

f worst comes to worst, is there a way to still check if the data on the hard drive is still salvageable
A hard drive is completely water-tight, so the data should be just fine. However, if the water fried the control circuits on the hard drive, then you've got some significant problems to deal with in accessing that data. You can remove the hard drive, assuming the computer is non-functional once dry, and put it in an external enclosure, then try to read it on another Mac. If that doesn't work, assuming the enclosure is a good one and the job of installing the drive in it was done correctly (it's actually kind of hard, but still undoubtedly possible, to mess that up in most cases), the control circuits are fried.
In the event that the drive can't be used any more, your only remaining option will be to pay an expensive data recovery service, like DriveSavers, to open up the drive and read the data directly off the platters inside. That should work fine in your case, but understand that there are no guarantees, despite the high price tag.
Of course, all this is off the table if your laptop actually has an SSD and not a hard drive. An SSD could be fried just like any other electronic components, and I'm not sure there would be any option for recovering your data in such an event.

  • Spilled liquid on macbook pro...

Spilled apple juice on screen and a little bit on the keys. Nothing went inside, just mostly under the MacBook Pro letters under the screen. Took Macbook apart and a little bit on the other side of the black part (under the macbook pro letters). There was a tiny speck on-top of the fan, that little grated part. Will this cause any future damage. It's barely visible and it's just on one of the grated pieces.
    Image for clarification (http://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_Offen_15_80be0537c4.jpg)

It's not on the motherboard or the fan itself, just above the fan the little grates I think the heat spews out. It's not a lot, like the smallest dot.
