Spilled coffee on iBook

Unfortunately I spilled coffee on my iBook G4 yesterday morning. I have since let it dry. Using the adapter, i have tried to reset the power manager using the instructions on this site. This has not helped. My iBook makes no sound at all. The adapter shows a charging signal when the battery is inserted (orange) and as a direct source of power when the battery is removed (green). Any way I can test to determine where the damage may be? And the permanence of any damage?

Welcome to Discussions!
I'm so sorry you've had to come here with this problem.
Any time any electrical appliance of any kind gets wet, terrible damage can occur.
Was your iBook off when the coffee spilled? Where did it spill? How long did you wait before trying to turn it on?
If your iBook isn't responding at all, you definitely need to let it dry out for a few days--without the battery connected.
You should also lift up the keyboard, remove the Airport Card (if you can see it) the RAM shield and any extra RAM. If you see any liquid down there, soak it up with a Q-tip.

  • How do I get the coffee stain out of my MacBook Pro screen? Spilled coffee on it e

I spilled coffee on my MacBook Pro this morning .... used the cool setting on my blow dryer for 20 mintues to dry out the keypad ....
Switched it back on in 4 hours .... everything works , except I now have a coffee stain behind my screen .... is there a way to absorb that out
or do I have to buy a new lid for my computer ?

You might have to have a new screen installed.  It's not too expensive ($160) and it's DIY, if you have the right tools and skills.

  • Spilled water on iBook

Glass of water was dumped on my iBook G4. It booted up okay, but problem seems to be that the power input won't recognize the AC adapter. Any ideas (ballpark) how much this would cost to fix?
Also, when I was using it before the AC adapter started to fizzle, my arrow froze up. The trackpad wouldn't work, but an external mouse would. Do I need to fear greater water damage?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hey RevMD,
Here's an earlier post of mine:
"Here's a mod of an earlier post of mine.
"Whenever any liquid/water is spilled on the iBook especially in the keyboard area which affords a direct path to the mother board, all power should be immediately removed from the iBook. In fact I might go so far as to say you should immediately pull the power plug and remove the battery, crashing the computer, because that would be better than causing an electrical problem on the logic board.
    In other words:
Crashing iBook - worst case scenerio - corrupted system - reinstall software
    probability ~ 5%
Water on the board - worst case scenerio - damaged logic board replacement cost
$300 depending on model plus labor - probability - 80%.
So once all power is off the computer it will have to be completely disassembled down to the board level and all parts will have to be inspected for signs of water. Even the tiniest drop will cause disaster. This would be especially true in the area of and under the larger LSI chips and surface mount chips. These sit very low to the board and can wick water underneath them very easily. In the case of the graphics chip, CPU chips which are ball grid mounted, there are hundreds of connections under these chips, separated by less that 1 mm. Water wicking into that area would need to be blown out with compressed air and then the board should be placed in a drying oven.
It could still take weeks or months to dry out naturally."
Keeping power on the computer, i.e. plugged in or battery in even if it's off, will cause a rapid erosion of the wet traces on the logic board via electolytic action. Some of these traces are .1 mm wide or less, so you can see that erosion of a trace that tiny will happen very quickly.

  • Spilled coffee on MBP. Now it turns on but runs slow.

I spilled coffee on my MBP (just black--no sugar). I took it to the Apple store, where they said I lucked out because it didn't look like anything was wrong. However, now that I'm home it seems to be running REALLY slowly. Is there a solution for this or am I screwed?

Turn it off, remove the battery, and disconnect the charger. Take it ASAP to your local Apple retailer. The longer you wait the more damage will be done.

  • I spilled coffee on my new macbook pro....What should I do?

macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

If you spilled coffee INTO the Mac (into the keyboard), then:
    1. Shut it down(do not put it to sleep)!
    2. Unplugg AC adapter.
    3. Leave it that way at least 24hours before turning it on again.
    4. If the computer seems dry after the first 24 hours, turn it on.
    5. Pray to GOD.
    6. If it works, you'll probably have to have the keyboard cleaned.
    7. Your warranty (including AppleCare) has expired anyway. If it doesn't work, you can't take it to Apple Store without paying for the repair (if possible). You might consider calling your household insurance provider, but that depends on terms of your insurance (if you have one).

  • I spilled coffee on my MacBook. Now it runs for about 20 seconds and shuts down

  • Spilled coffee on my macbook and now making beep and quieter.

I recently spilled coffee on my macbook and then the hardrive stopped working so I removed the hard drive and saw that it was covered in sticky old coffee. Then I bought a new hard drive and put it in.... The hard drive didnt show up when trying to install mac os x!!!! :O
Now I was thinking it could maybe be the hard drive connector but iunno.
ALSO when i boot it up it takes REALLY long to get to the menu screen for installing mac os x!! AND it also makes a wierd noise like this... beep beep... beep beep... every few seconds!
Anyone know what could be wrong?!?!?!?!?!?

Nobody can tell you specifically what to do next. There could be so many things wrong.
You probably ruined some components in the process and I think it's permanently damaged. If you're handy, you could try to repair it yourself, but this might be an arduous process. The procedure would then be to isolate the components that are causing the slow boot and the beeping. The iFixit.com site is really good for this, with spare parts and repair manuals.
You could also try to sell it on eBay (as broken, just for parts) where it might still fetch you a nice price.

  • Spilled Coffee on MacBook Pro

My 9 month old decided to spill coffee (1/2 cup) on my MacBook keyboard. I immedetly unplugged it and shut it off. Tried to turn it on a few min later and nothing happens, no power. Right now I have the back off of it and its sitting in rice.
My question is, since I have already decided to buy a new one cause its my work computer is, what are some things I can start replacing in it to try to fix it? Motherboard? CPU? Power source? Where do I start? I am going to try and fix it and then sell it to try and off set the cost of a new MacBook.
    Thanks guys. :(

First, the fact that you tried to power it on a few minutes after the spill isn't a good thing. It takes days for liquids spilled into a computer to dry, and turning a machine on while wet is almost a guarantee of damage. The fact that it won't respond at all means that the logic board is probably fried, at a minimum.
Also, note that using rice on a laptop is a very bad idea! Rice will get inside the vents, ports, optical drive, etc and do more damage. If rice ends up getting inside the machine and getting wet, you will end up with a sticky, starchy mess that will conduct electricity and cause shorts even after the liquid is dry.
Finally, don't even think about selling this machine to someone without fully disclosing the issue! That would be quite dishonest, possibly even fraudulent depending on the situation. You don't want that kind of trouble. If you want to try to get what you can from the machine, there are companies online that will buy damaged machines for parts. They will pay only based on testing the machine and determining which parts are still functional and salvageable. You may not get as much for the machine, but you also won't have to worry about someone taking legal action against you.

If your coffee had cream and/or sugar in it, after removing the batteries it would not hurt to slosh it a bit in warm (not hot) sterile water to rinse out the residues of the cream and/or sugar. Then let it dry thoroughly - might take a couple of days, even with a fan blowing on it. Do not use supplemental heat, such as a hair dryer or even direct sunlight, to speed up the drying - things with plastic parts can be damaged by excessive heat.
You can get sterile water at most grocery stores - the stuff for steam irons is perfect. Sterile water does not contain the usual lime and/or calcium that can deposit out when the water evaporates.

  • Toddler spilled coffee on six week old MBA

My precocious toddler managed to spill coffee all over my brand new macbook air (six weeks old).  I reacted very quickly however the keyboard is a cruncht= mess.  I tried to clean everything.....even managed to get under some of the keys.  Not sure what to do next.  I broke two of the scissor clips in the process and right now I'm just crushed.  I really can't afford two new computers.

    You can start here:

It will tell you how to contact Apple for service depending on your location.
    Good luck.

  • Spilled coffee

I've spilled quite a bit of coffee on keyboard of my hp pavilion 15-e010sm. I tryed to wipe as much coffee of the keyboard and dry it out. I turn it off at some point(in all the panic I don't remember when, but I did turn it off) and let it dry on air but it won't turn on. My question is, is there any hope of saving it? I've paid a fair price for it here, in Serbia and it woulde be a shame to go to waste.

  • Spilled coffee (am i the first to do this??)

1...spilled coffee on keyboard of laptop
    2...let the thing dry out
3...wouldn't start or even light power light
4...took apart and cleaned off coffee from circuit board with isopropal alch and tooth brush and let dry
    5...eureka...IT LIVES
    6...after 1/2 hour died again
    7...next day...works for 20 minutes and dies
what should i do...is there a log that will tell me the why it is failing?

You really needed to clean it right away in order to prevent damage. I'm almost certain some portion of your logic board has been damaged and the only repair for that is a new logic board.

  • Spilled coffee on mbp 2012

I spilled coffee on my mbp 2012. Then I immediately turned it off and opened it up and dried it with a hair drier.
Then I let it rest for another 2 days.
It boots up just fine, but the keyword is not working properly.
I took it to apple's genius bar and I was shocked by the repair cost estimate they gave me.
They said it's a flat rate $750 plus tax.
I know if the logic board was damaged this price wouldn't be that surprising, but only the keyboard doesn't work and replacing a keyboard shouldn't cost this much.
The guy kept telling me that for now its the keyboard, but coffee causes corrosion on your board and some time later you will find a more serious problem. That's why we have to do a complete inspection and it will cost this much.
Is this true? If everything is dried out already and the motherboard works just fine, will coffee really cause corrosion and malfunction? Or the guy was just trying to justify their hefty price tag for the service?

That's cheaper than the new computer you will need if you don't get this taken care of properly. The liquid seeps onto the motherboard and it also affects the keyboard down the road. The liquid is corrosive to a computer.
You have been told the truth but you are always free to ignore it.

  • Spilled Coffee + Miracle

    Hey fellow iBook'rs,
Anyway, yesterday I was at starbucks when somebody tripped and spilled their coffee all over my ibook keyboard. I immediatly dried up the coffee and turned my laptop upside down to get any leftover coffee out. I then ran to the Apple store in hope that my laptop could be revived (after the spill, my screen went blank and wouldn't turn on). The "Genius" center told me that it would cost about 900 dollars to fix it. By this time the screen was flashing random things and nothing came up clear (broken images). I told them that I would take it home and think about getting it fixed. When I got home, I took my hair dryer and dried all the areas of my laptop (on a cool setting). After doing this for 30 minutes, I prayed for a miracle. I then turned the power button on...and guess what- EVERYTHING WORKED! All my keys work, and nothing was erased!!!! I just wanted to send some hope out to any of you who might have done the same thing...your computer can be saved! I also took the time to back up my whole machine, as well as invested in a keyboard cover - http://thinkdifferentstore.com/productinfo.php/productsid/337 . I suggest everyone get one of these!!!
